I used these sticks for 3 months, and was VERY
    disappointed(understatement).Hereīs why:

1.Itīs really hard to do any rudimental stuff with these sticks because
they are not equally balanced.(Maybe thatīs why Lars Ulrich uses them...
    :-)
2.They break cymbals!!!!They cost me one crash cymbal and one pair of
    hi-hats.

Oh, bought Symphony Xīs:Divine wings of tragedy a couple of days
ago. This album is just...unbelievable.No other words to describe it.It
goes to my top 5 albums ever made.Buy it!!!

Could someone please tell me...I have noticed during the Dt tour that
when James yells/holds in notes.....why does his tongue stick out a
little bit??? And also right before he takes his breath before the note,
he touches his tongue?? I find this style very unorthodox....if anyone
knows the answer please email me in private....thanks

Hello, First to Partha and Joe Kruger, I finally got my ass to the post office and mailed your tapes. Alas, my roommate locked me out of his PC so I don't have your e-mails. Sorry for diluting the Jam. Next up: So I headed to Manifest Discs yesterday (Matt Pastor, you reading this?) to buy myself and my ex-girlfriend Christmas gifts. I like to be generous to myself at times. So I pick up Chris Isaak's Forever Blue for myself (THE ultimate break-up CD and one of my ten faves), and Ben Folds Five for the ex. As I'm paying, I think to myself, maybe I should check the DT section for the BMS single. So I get my bag o' discs and head over to the rock "D" section. There in the DT section I see, staring at me, the five men who haved shaped our lives. If you've seen the HY single cover, you know what I mean. Christmas BONUS!!!!!!! And ONLY $8.99! Man, do I love my The You or Me version, despite being a demo is WAY better than You Not Me. Some of the production ain't great, but the feel is better and so is the chorus. And D-man was right about that bridge; shouldn't have been dropped. The Way Things Used To Be. Why is it DT makes a habit of putting the best tracks on singles? TLF, Eve, and now this! This is an amazing song start to finish. James's lyrics (I believe they're his) are superb and the space in the verses is so refreshing, especially since DT songs are normally quite busy. It reminds me a bit of DLPM and TLF and LtL. As for that Jaxx show: When, who's going, and how am I getting there with you all? I finally have some money to play with (the result of selling a bunch of boots) and I wanna see DT dammit! _______________________________________________________ "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter..." -Yoda, the Jedi Master _______________________________________________________ Andrew Forcier a.k.a. Charlie, Jon and Jammers:

    >I also love the Dregs, so I guess everything worked out alright. >

I was very lucky to see Jordan play with Steve Morse and the Dregs when they last toured. I think it was a very brief tour in mid to late '95. That was right after Jordan joined. It was fooching phenominal. Jordan did the greatest keyboard solo I can remember!! Matt Guillory and Yanos Aldron were also with me to witness it. It was also very memorable because my rear car window was bashed in. I can laugh at that now. This happened again when I saw Steve Vai 4-5 months ago. Everytime I watch an incredible concert, I have to worry.

    > >Derek is a great keyboardist, but I really wish Kevin Morre never left the >band. I will not go on, because I know this thread has been brought up a >million times.

I can understand how some people may feel that way. The way I look at it is with DT's current direction, Derek is the perfect replacement.

    > > > The great thing for us fans is even though Kevin/Jordan left, we now >>can get 3X more music. Kevin, Jordan, and Derek on separate >>.CDs. > >I like the way you think. Have yo heard the Chromakey stuff yet, and is it > any good? >

I would just say this. Kevin's stuff is the most innovative 'non-progressive' music that I can remember. In other words, its something I haven't heard done before. Its refreshing and new. Imagine putting the 'Images and Words' mentality of writing but in Modern Rock tunes. I hear influences of U2, Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos but done in his own way. Maybe we can call it 'Progressive Modern-Rock.' Some people may disagree with my feelings. I also like non-progressive music. Very deep stuff.

from Jon: >The cup *is* 1/2 full, ain't it? :)

Yeah, but not for long. :) :)

Oh yeah, someone mentioned that John Myung is definately not the 'Quiet Man'. I would wholeheartedly agree with that!! Of the times I've talked with him, he always has been really cool and thoughtful. I know some are just joking but I never got that impression of him.

take care and merry christmas, --james--

For all the Yanks on the list, I have a friend who is going to England on the 7th of January, and I've asked her to pick up as many HY singles as she can find (from what my friends at Tower Records tell me, it's only available there). As soon as she gets back, I'll let you all know how many I end up with and if anyone wants to buy them / trade for them. Hopefully, she scores pretty well. :)

The station is Delta Radio (or something like that, memory fades away), don't ask me the frequency. Small local station. Maybe I should have grabbed their flyers when I was there.

Maybe someone from Hamburg could help us here. And tape the show if you can!

    >8. Again, DON'T EVER TRIGGER ANYTHING BUT THE BASS DRUM!!<

Triggering is not a bad idea when you have a limited budget. For example a bad drum set in a cheep studio, is inferior to a nice triggered set (preferably d-drums). The triggered set also only takes up two tracks as opposed to 10 to 12 tracks for an acoustic set. If a band is limited to 8 tracks (for financial reasons) electronic drums are the best way to go.

    Charlie

Charlie, If you know as much about recording as you think you do,you'll know that in the mix down process the drums are usually mixed down from their original tracks to two stereo tracks. After all the recording is done and all the effects are mixed in,then comes the mix down. This is all correct in a situation where budget is key.You only have 8 tracks to record to so you have to mix everything down.

Hi Guys, How is everybody? Just thought I'd write one last email before going home from school. I also am subscribed to this mailing list with my other account (aol). This is a school account, and this is a project that we have to do. So I decided to write to a mailing list of my favorite band, Dream Theater! Just a question for everyone. What is it about DT that makes you like them? Is it the music? The lyrics? For me I guess it's a combination of both. I just like them. I can't really explain it. This is why I'm asking this question. Trying to get a good response out of some people. Well, I gotta go. I'll write again as soon as I can.

    >>bass drums were also triggered. I think this IS in fact used a lot, especially if you're on a budget like most indie bands or bands recording demos are.<<

When on a budget, I think that triggering is a fantastic way to get a large drum sound with "little" money.

    >>The bass drum on I&W IS triggered. <<

The whole drumset is triggered on I&W. I don't think that the drummer (MP) had any say in the matter. It was the producers choice.

    >>Plus, I want you to say to Gene Hoglan's face that he has a lazy left foot. He'll just kick your ass :-) <<

Hey Gene, you have a lazy foot!!!!!!! By the way, who is Gene Hoglan? Did I just stick my foot in my mouth?

    >>Triggers are not always a necessity, sometimes they are a choice.<<

I would choose triggers in certain situations. But for me, in a rock setting, and a big budget, nothing sounds better than a kick @$$ drumset (DWs while we are at it).

    >>Am I the only one that thinks JM makes the fretless sound kinda like a fretted bass? I thought the objective was to sound different :-)<<

I'm with you on this one. I just saw DT in concert, and I was unable to tell if JM was using a fretless. I only heard one line in HY that made me think that he could possibly be using a fretless. I even think that his fretless bass had the fret markings on the neck if I remember correctly. I could be wrong on this one though.

Hey folks, I subscribe (also) to the Spock's Beard mailing list ("Thoughts"), and recently someone asked if SB would be able to open for DT soon. Neal Morse, the vocalist (who posts regularly to the mailing list, and for that reason I recommend joining it if you're a fan of the Beard--he always answers everyone's questions--real cool) responded in the negative because he and Nick (the drummer) are due to become fathers in March, but he asked the following question and I thought I'd pass it along to the relevant group of people...

    >Hey, some people have said that the DT audience is a >metal audience and wouldn't dig SB. What do y'all think? - Neal

For those of you who don't know, SB are a fantastic prog group (obviously not metal) who are influenced by 70s Yes and Genesis, among many others. Several people responded on the Thoughts Mailing List and said they thought SB would be well-received by DT fans because, although there are some fans that only like metal, the majority are more interested in the prog aspect, and would definitely give the Beard a chance. One post mentioned Echolyn as a non-metal prog group (and I'd add Rudess-Morgenstein as well) that were well-received. Anyway, anyone have any opinions? I'll collect a few of them and post them to Thoughts to give Neil a better idea of what DT fans' opinions are on the topic. Okay, a lot of folks have been talking about how DT haven't played any WDADU songs in the last few tours. Someone wrote:

    >Since that tour they've toured for Awake, a mini tour for ACoS and >are touring for FII. I must mention here (and I realize there have been responses to this since it was written) that I saw them play TKH on Long Island during the Fix for '96 tour. So they aren't completely neglecting WDADU songs in the US.

Well, when Echolyn opened up for DT at Birch Hell, they weren't that well-received, even though they kicked much ass-ola..... It's not like the crowd really booed them or heckled them or anything, but they were just standing around bored. Except for the Jammers that were around - I think they were the only people that actually recognized the songs.....

So I don't think that Spock's would be greatly received, but they won't be booed or heckled. I mean, for God's sake, Big Wreck were openers on this leg of the tour.,

Marillion's music is only (kinda) heavy when the lyrics call for a heavy sound. As for Dream Theater, they're heavy most of the time. I think that's one of the differences between prog and prog metal. Prog musicians sound heavy when needed, while prog metal musicians just sound heavy.

    > But, I would still consider them progressive because their music > (and lyrics) are well thought out and have a lot of subtle interplay.

They were considered to be THE prog band throughout the 80's. I've been listening to "prog" since I was eight years old ('79). During the 80's, Marillion was the most popular prog band in Europe. I've seen lots of Marillion rip-offs come and go... So to me it's kinda funny to read things like "I would still consider them progressive because..." or read posts from people who are wondering why others call Marillion progressive... I kinda get the impression that some of you think that "prog" means complex and heavy (like DT's music) and judge all other bands by that standard. Newsflash : There is a lot more to "prog" than Sega Playstation-like instrumental breaks, "shredding" guitar solos and nadz rockin' drumming (sorry, I'm not a musician, so don't expect any fancy musician type words !). I am not trying to flame Steve, or anyone else... It's just something I had to get off my chest. Smile. :-)
