I went to the Redskin's victory over the Eaglets this past Sunday. As the
opening kickoff took place the music was the Sarejevo part of the
TSO/Savtage song "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo". That was a great choice to
    open a NFL game...

I bought some new CD's the other day, and I want to share my opinions
about them. I wouldn't have heard about them haven't it been for you
guys, so this may come handy for some ppl like me :) I'm not any good in
doing reviews, so I will keep this very short.

Theater of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear:
a romantic melancholic album with a dark, dark male voice, and a light,
light female soprano (the famous Liv Kristine Espenęs). The band is
norwegian, and performs Shakespare-era lyrics. One of the tracks are in
German. Very cool. They consist of seven members, and includes the use
of the piano and the e-bow. This album rules! If you tend to like My
Dying Bride - The Angel and The Dark River, I guess you will love this.
It's not the same, but nevertheless. The soprano among alot of things,
make this album very special. Get it!

    Savatage - Edge of Thorns:
powerful aggressive prog-metal with cool catchy guitar-riffs. Enough
    said! Get this too!

Vanden Plas - The God Thing:
You like Fates Warning and Dream Theater? Well - you should take a look
at Vanden Plas. At times complex as h... :) Some songs have the violin
and the cello as well. Great!

Summary: If you have the money, go get them all! You won't regret it.
    They are all great!

Hope these short reviews can help some poor souls :)

    Best regards,
    Einar

    >>Hey, some people have said that the DT audience is a >>metal audience and wouldn't dig SB. What do y'all think? - Neal

I think most of the fans of DT would enjoy them because they are QUALITY musicians. Yeah, you will get the odd heavy metal fan who doesn't get it, but it can't be any worse than Big Wreck opening up for DT. (I'm not slamming BW, they are just not the most appropriate group to open.)

I'm sorry to hear that they can't do it. I think that they really need to tour with someone nationally to increase their notoriety. I think DT is a good match for them. (Yes might be a better match, but they have too much to play as it is.) Also, I WANT THEM TO PLAY ON THE EAST COAST! I'd love to see them live and I wonder if that is ever going to happen.

Man, this is complete bull. With the amount of thought that obviously goes into a lot of DT's lyrics, how can you say that? How can you listen to Scarred and not pay attention to the lyrics? Come one, some of us care.

Dan: >Could someone please tell me...I have noticed during the Dt tour that >when James yells/holds in notes.....why does his tongue stick out a >little bit??? And also right before he takes his breath before the note, >he touches his tongue?? I find this style very unorthodox....if anyone >knows the answer please email me in private....thanks

Possible reasons: a) He's thirsty b) He saw somebody in the audience that he hates (that gotta be difficult), and he shows his tongue to him/her at every opportunity c) James is trying hard not to swallow his tongue d) He's actually a lizard man and he smells through his tongue e) I would think it's the way he's been taught. A lot of teachers emphasize a lot that you have to "open your throat" a lot during high notes, and that's probably how he manages to do that. I'm sure it also helps volume-wise.

Charlie Korch: >Hey Gene, you have a lazy foot!!!!!!! By the way, who is Gene Hoglan? Did >I just stick my foot in my mouth?

Gene worked with Dark Angel, Death, Testament and is now in Strapping Young Lad. He's one of the best drummers out there, and probably the best in the thrash/death metal genre. Of course, his strong point is double bass technique :-) He also does some wicked things with his hi-hat :-)

Charlie Korch: >I would choose triggers in certain situations. But for me, in a rock >setting, and a big budget, nothing sounds better than a kick @$$ drumset >(DWs while we are at it).

I agree completely. It's also true when you have your own home studio, I know drummers that buy all the microphones and are very proud to get a good drum sound. You just can't beat that... yet.

Still Charlie: >I'm with you on this one. I just saw DT in concert, and I was unable to >tell if JM was using a fretless. I only heard one line in HY that made me >think that he could possibly be using a fretless. I even think that his >fretless bass had the fret markings on the neck if I remember correctly. I >could be wrong on this one though.

Well, the fretless he used in Tampa didn't have any fret marks. When they do have fret marks I know it's kinda hard to tell it's a fretless if you're not too close to the stage...

This was written about Easton Drumsticks: 1.It=B4s really hard to do any rudimental stuff with these sticks because=20 they are not equally balanced.(Maybe that=B4s why Lars Ulrich uses them...= =20 :-) **I think that this is wrong. I didn't find a problem with the balance, I did however have a hard time getting used to the weight overall, the fact that they feel 1/2 as heavy as other sticks.*** 2.They break cymbals!!!!They cost me one crash cymbal and one pair of=20 hi-hats. ***I have to agree. That really sucks man. At least the wooden drumsticks will dent first, before you break a cymbal. (BUY VIC FIRTH, THEY LAST FOREVER!!) Sorry, had to write my opinion of who makes the best sticks!*** ***And, another point of interest. I actually got rid of the Eastons because they were marring my cymbals. They were adding the nylon marks on my cymbals. They were not removable. I tried cymbal polish, but it didn't work. So, I decided the sticks had to go. =20 Later, J****

    >The bass drum on I&W IS triggered. <<

The whole drumset is triggered on I&W. I don't think that the drummer (MP) had any say in the matter. It was the producers choice.

I have to disagree, In my listening interpretation, I think that only the bass drum and the snare were triggered. I'd like to find out for sure btw.

The Producer (David Prater) IMHO, is an asshole for doing that. If you wanted a "beefier" sound, he should have added some compression on the set, or used a bigger bass drum (that's what John Bonham was known to do, in fact, he liked such deep bass so much that his bass drums got progressively bigger <along with his whole drumsets>) and if he wanted a heavier sound for the snare drum, well, a better deeper snare drum could have taken care of that. If he wanted to trigger the bass drum, IMHO, that is fine, but, DON'T TRIGGER THE SNARE!!

Well, I'm not sure about touching the tongue, but his tongue sticks out when holding notes because that is the "correct" way to sing - i.e. singing with an open throat cavity. As a point of reference, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins sings with a closed throat cavity almost all of the time.

    Hope this helps!

SB rocks....they'd be a perfect compliment to DT....those guys can fookin wail. I have Beware of Darkness...as long as they stay away from "Waste Away" they should be pretty well-received =) that song's pretty damn boring, IMHO, and it doesn't fit with the rest of the album. But "Thoughts," "Doorway," and "Walking" are all top-notch....sounds like a cross between DT, Kansas, and Yes (maybe a smidgen of Echolyn, with the vocals, and the cool noises all over "Thoughts" remind me of Floyd or QR).

(You may be wrong, bet I may be too.) ]From the front row I definately remember him playing a fretless for some songs. Also, as I don't recall anyone mentioning before, on the neck of the bass, the little fret pips (whatever they're called, the little dots, you know) were all rearranged into the shape of the infinity symbol (sideways 8). It was kinda hard to see because the neck was black and the pips were a grey pearl like color. Also on the head was a signature that looked like it could've been John Myung, so maybe it was his own signature model or something.

I had heard a video and live 2cd set were in the works, but then I read in Metal Edge(reliable source-NO, NOT REALLY!) that they were going to work on a new album in 1998. Anyone have a clue? This is kind of the case of "chicken before the egg or the egg before the chicken ?".

Did DS' presence bring the new feel to DT on FII or did was he just part of DT's new direction ?

I believe a bit it's a bit of both. Well, IMHO anyway. Keyboards can bring quite a thick layer of a certain atmosphere to a song and at times, ultimately determine the overall mood of a certain peice of music. DS' presence definately gives DT's style on FII a noticeable kick in their new direction (as any new musician would of course), but in DT's case, with KM having such a deeply rooted presence in the band that some other keyboardists don't, then the difference is easily noticeable.

    Any other comments...?

    Luke.

    - First off, why is it that whenever I type in the address for this list, my first try ends up in putting ytseHAM>??

    - Merry Christmas, yadda yadda for everyone........

    - Working on Christmas Eve blows goats

    - To the dude looking for the BMS single, I take it you were looking for the radio promo single, becuase I don't think that it was officially released....and if it has, let me know.

    - Hollow Years single is very cool. Every time I hear this song, I wish it was released earlier and more aggressively. When I listen to this and close my eyes, I can definitely picture this song on a soundtrack for a movie. Man, would that be awesome, especially for a really big movie?

    - MY top 5(+1) CDs of 1997, with short reviews to justify the list being here. This list reflects my favorite CDs to listen to this past year, since I don't know if all of them were released in '97.

5(+1). Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen This album is just great. It doesn't rock in a DT, FW sort of way - more of like a very upbeat and modern-day (meaning late 90's) Billy Joel-ish thing. Piano, Bass, and Drums kickin' out great music. This definitely had to be added to my list, not to be forgotten.

    5. Dream Theater - Falling Into Infinity

I like the album, but it seems that I tend to skip a lot of the songs on there. One of my faves because it's DT, because the songs that I do listen to just knock me on my ass, and because when I saw some of the songs I skip played live, they were awesome (as the rest of the show was).

    4. Live - Secret Samadhi

This album wasn't that big, but I think it was absolutely fantastic. Granted, the lyrics aren't as profound and all, but these guys have definitely matured musically, and all the songs still have a classic Live feel to them. It's too bad this album didn't take off as it should have.....I guess that's thanks to those sheep we call music consumers.

    3. Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Grey

Nothing needs to be said, it's been done a million-fold.

    2. Tool - Aenima

Tool just friggin' rocks. Don't know how prog you can classify them, but they are without a doubt in a world of their own. This album is so full of little intricacies that add to the overall feel of the album that it's mindboggling to notice something different each time you hear it.

    1. Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E.

Man, if people dont have this, you have to. I listen to this almost non=-stop. A cross of Chili Peppers, Primus, Faith No More, etc. with a bit of reggae-ish blurbs, along with a bit of turntable scratching and one of the best new voices to come along in some time. Sheesh..........I can't say enough about this, except for get it.

OK, my boycott of working on Christmas Eve has officially come to a close.
