Well, other than the Rush show I saw this past year, 1997 was more of
a year for great metal shows than prog. Let's see, there was
Megadeth in St. Louis, Megadeth in Phoenix (hey Vince, Eckie, and the
rest of the guys :), Bruce Dickinson in St. Louis (kicked ASS), Ozz
Fest (faves were Pantera, Ozzy, Sabbath, Downset, Fear Factory, and
honorable mentions go to Machine Head and Type O. In fact, the only
band there I didn't care for was Powerman 5000), Tourniquet and
Saviour Machine at Cornerstone '97, not to mention Klank, and the
many I'm forgetting right now. I guess I can count the JP/DS clinic
in St. Louis, too :).
Looks like '98 might get off to a good start since I'll probably be
seeing 'deth in Indianapolis Jan. 11 :). Let's hear it for live
music.

Yes, it is like this on my copy too. Still baffles me, but what really
bothers me is the way they laid out the lyrics. They're too hard to read.
Other than that it looks killer. (Don't have Episode... I know nothing

I am neither impatient nor have I lost faith in the FC, I have been a
member since
September 95 and appreciate Neil Elliott's great efforts.
It just would have been 'nice' for you or someone else let us know about
the delay.
I joined the fan club for the fanzine, not a free CD, their was no free CD
when I joined.

And once again...
Upon our arrival in Hamburg I've made up my mind about future travel
plans. Ties is already awaited by a group of fans (of DT, not of Ties!)
and I encount 'ticketmaster' Jason in person. Matthias, Dany and I than
go, arranging our travelplans. Dany has his girlfriend check on a flight
(she manages to book one on the same plane as Matthias'). Some people
realy haven't lost faith in humanity yet, we don't know each other at all
at this point of time! I reschedul my ticket, from Zuerich to Amsterdam.
Yahoo!!!
Next destination: the concerthall, where local fan Joerg (WGMTT-who got me
the ticket) is waiting. I'm glad that he recognizes me, guess I would have
had to ask two dozends of people AT LEAST!!
We check out a local fair and have Ties already waiting in line which
ensures a spot in the front row. Thanks a lot!=20
While supplying my friends in the front row with drinks, Ties introduces
me to 'the guy from the Mirror (Steffen)' and I sign up - can't wait for
this mystical Christmas CD!

Opener Vanden Plas actually change their set! They replace one anouncement
with another! Sorry, I don't mean to become sarcastic.=20
Vanden Plas really is a GOOD progressive band with innovative songwriting
and creative ideas. I also like their record a lot, but they certainly
have a tough spot, opening for DT. It's hard, to get epic songs (some 6
songs in about 45 minutes) across if the crowd is not that familiar with
them. Also, they don't get the best sound possible, and the bass player's
broken foot influences their stage acting.
Just a sideremark from a musician who has been touring with Fates Warning,
another opener of DT. I've been told about a 4 (!) hour soundcheck of DT
and half an hour left for FW, until doors opened. It's non of my business
to blackmark my favorite band, I have not been present personally and FW
themselves don't have too much of a frilendly reputation as humans, but
I've heard it and want to pass it on for subject of discussion.
Sound:=09DT have the usual good sound, crisp, clear.
Crowd:=09According to Joerg, it is a regular 'Hamburg-crowd', mainly
=09watching, little pushing. Yet the place is completely stuffed! I
=09wouldn't wanna be in the same tightness in a Danish crowd...
Hall: =09The place is not a sportshall but also too big for a club,
=09something inbetween. There's only one floor with a heightend back and a
=09cornice along the sides. The capacity seems to me like 2000 but I be
=09they sold 2500 tickets! It's the hottest concert, next to me two
=09girls pass out!
Extras:=09I wave at JP for a pick. He throws one kinda in my direction. No
=09catch. The second time, I see it fall in front of me to the floor and
=09spend the next 15 minutes head down over the barrier, looking for it.
=09Matthias next to me tells me later that JP now looked somewhat worried
=09why noone is helping me since I have apparently fainted. (It would
=09take more than a concert for that!)=20
=09In the end, a mercyful fan gives me another pick. (If you are
=09reading this mail, mail me! You know why!)
=09JP still uses the same picks as back in 1993, pretty small &
=09thick, unstamped, 'Jazz III' printed on. Would there be no possibility
=09for you to get a collector item, John? (stamped ones for instance)

=09Michael 'Kr=FCcky' leaves his Jacket on.
=09In Bonn, he held it up, James picked it up and walked along the
=09stage to show it to people: It's got the'IAW'-cover on the back=20
=09painted!
=09I leave the front row once in a while to get pics: No flash and a
=09lot of quick shots from one spot, than move on soon - no hassel.
=09The very special insert of Hamburg has already been discussed on
=09the Jam. Another 'sideproject' of DT, with Derek singing (he looks
=09as good on vocal as on guitar: Great!) with a song apparently a
=09punk-cover tune, but in reality self written. And no film left,
=09I could shoot myself.
Matthias, Danny and I decide to skip the aftershow tonight, to get the
0:50 train. Thanks to Danish construction sites, this train has a little
delay of 120 minutes and the next one of only 45 minutes. So we enjoy
ourselves and the company of two DT-youngsters (16 years old) in the
waiting room with Jaegermeister. I still don't understand, why this can be
ones FAVORITE drink!
Travel day 7 & Travel day 8

We stay at Danny's & his girlfriend's. A sightseeing tour through
Amsterdam which I combine with shopping (famous Amsterdam) fill monday.
After a relaxed evening, Bettina (Danny's girlfriend) accompanies Matthias
and me to the airport while Danny goes to work. One couldn't imagine a
more attentive host!
Flying is such a neat experience! We arrive in Luton and I can't help
walking around with a permanent smile, the British accent is just too
present and amusing.
In London center, we check out Tower records. In the metal section, I bump
into Steve from Maine, U.S. We stare at each other in disbelief: 'Hey, I
know you!'
Steve turned me onto DT back in 1993 and took me to a show of them.
The CD-section is okay, but the book-section really cheers me up and
empties my purse.
Matthias and I get to the Forum at 6:00 in the evening. Mike seems kinda
busy and JP rushes by at the backstage entry as well. We therefore hang
out at a real English pub across the street.=20
According to fans, DT practiced again their side-project.

Sound:=09I stand next to the soundboard for a whole and jsut float in the
=09music! I wish, I'd had a bootlef of that show.
Crowd:=09A mixture between the German and Danish people. Many singing along
=09but also a great deal of non-die hard fans.
Extras:=09Nightmare cinema! They really play it. In the very moment when
=09Mike anounces it, I am standing in the back of the hall. I start
=09screaming my yahoos and running towards the stage while everybody
=09just stars at me with dismay. Where are the jammers?
=09JP has, according to Matthias, huge problems with the drums
=09tonight. He's done a lot better the last two times, as well as MP during
=09the first 3 songs. He threws around drumsticks, attempting to hit
=09someone (his roadies?) and almost knocks down the drumkitt once.
=09
=09I've broght flowers to the show to throw them on stage by the end,
=09but, typically, don't have them at hand. So I give em to Derek later on
=09who's not that impressed about it.
Hall:=09The hall is one of the nicest ones I've ever seen: with style,
=09almost like a classical opera built, certainly with a better accustic
=09than a sportshall. There is a balcony on the back, but only
=09accessible with the proper tickets. (pre-sale, same price), but
=09not with an aftershow pass!
Speaking of ridiculous details: At the entrance, we are given tickets
(guest list) which the security - some 2 meters away - demandes back. The
reply for a collector's request is that there is only a 'limited number'
of these tickets.
What's the use of handing two tickets available back and forth 2 meters?
I talk to two Scotts with their incredible braveheart accent.

Aftershow:
----------
The aftershow by itself is worth the trip. Over an hour of time, relaxed
bandmembers, little people. I walk up to whomever I want to talk
to. I get signatures and have a Jaegermeister with Mike and Matthias.
I also talk to the silent man for quite a while, he's not that shy,
after all. JM askes Matthias, if he could take a pic of him and a friend
and send it to him; something really unusual, as I am told at least 10
times on our return. 'He KNOWS my name, he has talked to me!' Guess, I
should be proud now, that JM said, he remembers me (from your interview
in 1993, where I asked him, if he was from Korea like me). I wonder,
that I actually know more about this country than he does, I am adopted
while he has Korean parents.
I have picked up a great book about AIDS at tower records, which I give to
John (learning to live). He has scored 'in the nineties' in the quiz and
Derek has apparently shared the choccolate from Bonn.=20
After the goodbye, Matthias and I have a late dinner at a nearby Turkish
take away. We spand the next 3 hours in the same building's cellar at a
weird bar, he awake, I asleep (Guiness beer and Jaegermeister...).
Travel day 9 & 10

We than miss the train, waiting in the cold and rain. What else would
there be to expect from England? One hour later, we both fall asleep in
the train missing two stations. One hour till departure. Now what? Luckyly
there is a connection in the opposite direction 2 minutes later. We get to
the airport 15 minutes before take off. Flight back, train, taxi, SLEEP!
After a nostalgic evening and a troublesome night with again little sleep
(private affairs), Danny and Bettina bring us to the station the next
morning. 10 hours later, I'm back home.

Hey hey peeps, guess what? I was at my local blockbuster renting some
videos and i hapenned to glance over to the little CD stand every
blockbuster video seems to have. It had a big sign that said, "TOP 20" so i
figured of course the music would be crap, and it mostly was - Hanson,
UB40, the Diana tribute, etc (no offense to all you strange people who like
those artists :), but then - lo and behold - i see they have 3 copies of
FII! I was flabbergasted (hehe, i've been trying to use that word in a
sentence for a few days now :). Not even at a blockbuster music, where i've
heard they have everything only we don't have those stores here in Puerto
Rico - it was at a plain ol' blockbuster video (San Patricio). Thought
provoking, to say the least.
The other issue I'd like to bring to light is some news i heard from the
one cool CD Store Clerk on this island who i happenned to meet while
looking for Trans-Siberian Orchestra (i didn't find it): He mentioned the
Steve Vai clinic we had at a music store where i happen to know the manager
so i and my brother happenned to sit 3 feet away from steve, they're trying
to get another clinic. They deal Ibanez, so obviously they'd get another
artist who endorses Ibanez. He said they tried to get Satriani, but he
couldn't for some reason, so now they're trying to get - all you puerto
rican jammers sit down (both of you) - JP!! <thump>. Once i came to i kept
talking to him and he reccommended a few guitarists i hadn't heard before,
and i liked the CDs. Anyways, i gotta call the manager of Villa Piano to
see if this is true and whether he's coming or not. And stuff. Well, lata
moo people!

Well, look at it this way... It's too expensive to snail mail every subscriber, every time you want to inform them of something. But if you can reach a big part of them by posting one message on the 'Jam or putting something on a webpage, then I think you should ! One of the great things about the Internet is that it's *very* easy to get the word out about something ! And once the online Ytsejammers know about something, you can be sure they'll pass it on to all the off- line Ytsejammers they know. I know *I* do.
Denis, I'd be more than happy to post (time critical) info on Under A Cyber Moon, if that would help... It'd be on the news page within 24 hours... A lot of people consider Under A Cyber Moon their main source for Dream Theater info (that's probably because those people don't have the time to read the Ytsejam). For you information, UACM gets well over 200 hits a day. :-)
About being fair to fanzine subscribers without 'Net access... When they signed up, I'm sure they didn't expect a daily newsletter. ;-) Fact is, with three or four fanzines a year, you KNOW you won't get the latest news the minute it's available. IMO, it would be best if all the fanzines started a website for the latest news. It would be an extra service to the 'online' subscribers, and it would be up to those *without* 'Net access to decide if they want to get online or not. In turn, the fanzine websites can help promote the fanzines... Of course, I would be more than happy to help out in any way I can.

The machine tried it's best, but in the final tally was defeated by very determined humans. The strategy used was devide and conquer. The weapons were Format"C" and reorganize into "C" and "D". It was a long and hard fought battle that at points allmost saw the machine headed for the window. Windows 95 was tamed and an understanding was reached. We are the bosses and the machine will obey, at least on the surface.

DT doesn't play this. They use the original theme by Danny Elfman at the beginning of their shows. I think they used it on their images and words tour.
