Images & Words had a very artificial-sounding drum sound, even
though it stood out well in the mix. Awake has this amazing drum sound
where you can hear every last splash and mini-tom, but the album itself
is mixed a bit too thickly to appreciate the drum sound much.

Those of you who want to be blown away by how good Mike's drum
sound can be, must either go see them in concert, or buy the Progressive
Drum Concepts video, and listen to the drum exhibition version of
Erotomania. (It was also played thus at the clinics). With the drums more
heavily accented in the mix, the rhythm has a lot of bite, and the song
itself seems to get a lot better in the process.

The Bruce Dickinson session tracks from Acoustic Dreams also
feature this accent on the drums, though not as soundly, and the Take The
Time demo from TSM single is yet another good example.

Last night I saw Gary Hoey perform in Palo Alto. All Bay Area jammers who
weren't there totally missed out. Aside from the first opening band, which
sucked ass, the concert was amazing!

The second opening act was a 3-piece instrumental outfit called "The Doppler
Effect", led by guitarist Doug Doppler (drummer is Atma Anur, who has recorded
with a lot of Shrapnel guys, I believe). I had never heard of them, and had
no idea what to expect. GUITARISTS TAKE NOTE: Doug Doppler is a phenomenal
new talent. This guy was shredding with taste, and style - totally blew me
away in 45 minutes of pure guitar frenzy and melody. I bought his disc on the
spot, and he signed it after the show - a class act all the way.. Sticker on
the disc reads: "Doug Doppler has a great guitar sound. It's Uncanny. - Joe
Satriani... I've heard the best and he's right up there - soulful. - Neal
    Schon" I must agree!!

Then Gary came on - he put on a fantastic show. He was right on top of all of
his great tunes, including the monster "Hocus Pocus" for the encore. He also
played an extremely impressive solo acoustic tune, leading into an acoustic
rendition of "Eleanor Rigby." Other covers included "Wipeout," "Black Magic
Woman.." Oh yeah, and he pulled a random guitarist out of the crowd to go up
and play blues with him - I was up front and he chose a guy right next to me -
DAMN! My take on Gary is that he's somewhat of a cross between a shredder and
a soulful, Carlos Santana type player. It's a good combination, and he's got
    great melodic talent.

Go see Gary Hoey (and the Doppler Effect!) if you get the chance...

well i listened to it and IMO the part i mentioned in LSOAD more closely
resembles it(the old theme from way back) so look in your old jams and see
what i am talking about, remember that awake has alot of repeating riffs and
musical themes throughout, both these sections sound similiar but IMO the
Wheel theme is in LSOAD. when its listed in the FAQ as scarred then maybe
Ill believe it. and ohh yeah im glad you have the ability to say that im

i hear all of these SOUNDS when people talk) : (

Although there is a bit of controversy over the true source of this show, my
ears tell me this is NOT a soundboard recording, but is an excellent
sounding AUDIENCE recording. It is one of the better sounding bootlegs out
there, but not the best. Regardless, this item is well worth having,
especially with ACOS ("Please don't go!!" version) and Eve (with samples).
Also, this is the "authentic" version of the Tragedy/Comedy bootleg set. Bid
    your heart out.

Sorry, dude, hate to burst your bubble, but I just recently got the same 2CD set for $40 from my local dealer. I hate to rip you on this, but it seems unfair to sell it higher then that to me. I think their still in stock. I'll ask him who his dealer is and get back with you on this. I know it was made by Why Not? records from Italy. Mebbe you can find em on the net somewhere. This is definitely THE boot of the I&W tour to get, though. Best quality I've heard from most boots.

Heya kids. Two little pieces of news for ya today.

First, a friend of mine is a photog for Metal Edge, and he scanned in one of his shots of Mike and sent it to me, so I put it up on the web so you could all have a look. It's at http://www.emba.uvm.edu/~cmerlo/PORTNOY1.JPG. I should be getting more pix soon.

Second, for all you Nine Miles fans out there, we have recorded a third song. Sound-quality wise, it's not as great as the other two, but song-writing and arrangement wise, it's my favorite out of the three. It's called "Forever In a Day," and you can get a listen for it and read the lyrics at the Nine Miles Web Site.

And, for those of you that haven't heard any Nine Miles stuff, I hope that you can take 15 minutes out of your day and try us out. There's no money involved or anything, I just want people who know music (that's you guys) to give us an unbiased opinion of this stuff.

You can check us out at http://www.uvm.edu/~cmerlo/ixmi.html

Thanks for indulging us! Enjoy that Portnoy picture!

    Hi!

    Uhm, I'm still alive! :)

    >From: Randall Braun <RBraun@adnc.ameridata.com> >Subject: FW: Empire Entertainment CD list

    >SUPERIOR - behind (Ger) org. band pressing $21.98 WHAT?! Can't be! This pressing is SOLD OUT! There is only the NOISE pressing now.

    >SUPERIOR - behind T-Shirt (L/XL) black, dbl sided $TBA Hmpf. Seems this dude is kind of a little too fast. The T-shirts will be finished by the end of this month. So you can order them in March at the earliest and I will sell them via Jason Skewes too and this will maybe be a little cheaper. So if you want some, please be a little patient. I'll tell you all when they are ready to be shipped, ok?

    Bye.

    Bernd.
