Correct me if I'm wrong but I know they are another fine band
from Texas..
I just got SUPERIOR today !!! I totally LOVE the cd !!
It is so well produced and VERY HEAVY which is what I've been looking for
ever since the release of Awake. This is a good 'fix' for me. A good
injection of METAL for my musical needs. Looking in the section "The band
would like to thank:", I found it very tasteful that the band acknowledged
Jason Skewes, Al Balkiewicz, and Steve Chew, and even the entire Ytsejam
mailing list !
The guy at the cd shop where I went to (plug - Bone Daddies in Dallas) gave
me a cd to listen to while I was there. A great progressive band out of
Colorado.. Psycho Drama. Real good group. Give them a listen if you find
one of their cd's..
For those of us who don't yet have Lemur Voice -- They are the "Featured
artist of the
Month" at the Knights of the Round CD Kingdom (nih! nih!)

Hard rock, heavy metal, progressive, imports and domestics...they have it
all.
Oh, and about the discussion of Saigon Kick earlier... I really LOVE their
FIRST and SECOND cd's... But "water" (3rd) really blows... (sorry Heather..
heh) Their debut cd is just awesome. Very heavy and rockin' songs. They
seemed to have lost it on "water" though.. I just traded in several older
cd's for a couple of Lillian Axe cd's today. I now finally have "Poetic
Justice" on cd rather than just tape, and picked up one called Lillian Axe
1987 - 1989 which is killer !!
Just realized I didn't have any DT content in here.
At Bone Daddies I was lucky enough to pick up
TWO ACOS stickers !! Nice and big, too.
Look for 'em..

I just e-mailed the label. I made sure the message was concise and
polite. I urge you all to do the same. Don't just send mail telling
them to fuck themselves(although I know the urge is tempting!). We want
them to hear us out and respect us. The last thing we want to happen is
to see the band get dropped. Simply inform them that they have a large
and growing base of extremely dedicated fans who are hungry for some new
material. Let them know that the new material will be widely embraced.

just gave it a look, this site is exactly what i'd refer to as a well
constructed site. i love it, no billions of graphics, straight to the point
info, real simple but informative navigation... not to mention it rocks pig
nads. i'd always wondered about some of the rush and metallica and whatnot
cover art i never saw cuz i never bought the discs, and its all there to
check out. its as fun as puking your guts out after riding tom's twister
and more.

i&w is my favorite DT album, too... i love the diversity and the
smoothness with which they pull off, well, everything... yeah, i hate
the drum sound, but i think it definitely has the best music of the
lot.
i like awake, but i do think it's a step down in quality... it's too
strung together and the transitions, which are one of the main things
i look for in a bad, are very harsh compared to i&w... there's too
much slamming from one part to another. and scarred, imo, is proably
one of their worst songs, with too many choppy transitions, a kinda
aimlessness to it, and a general feeling to it that i don't like... it
bores me.
the new ACOS, i think, is very cool, and just as good as the old
version, although they are so different that it's hard to consider
them the same song nowadays. the old one was very much in the I&W
style, and the new one is in an evolved-from-awake sort of sound...
the new arrangement just reflects the current state of the band. i
think it sounds great, and flows much better than Awake, except for
the changes in keyboard patches, which sometimes seem too abrupt and
jarring for me.
mind you, it's nothing like with Magellan, where they have to change
mood, key, time, and sounds every 11-15 seconds, but the transitions
just seem harsh to me... there was something about I&W where when
someone changed sounds, they would come in very gracefully and
appropriately... that gracefullness kinda went away with awake, and
kinda dissappoints me.
however, i'm looking forward to the new album... i just can't consider
DT my favorite band anymore... I&W is definitely among my very
favorite albums, but like Marillion's Brave, it's a hell of a mountain
to top.
i'm kinda dissappointed with the prog and progmetal scene these days.
someone's gonna hate me and/or flame me for this, but i'm really sick
of Magna Carta, "DT clones", and the bandwagon mentality. Mike Varney
is spewing generic prog/progmetal bands into the market just like he
spewed shredguitarists into the market, and it all gets very
frustrating when i see people raving about these bands, and then i go
out and pick up a cd and find that it's a band, usually in the
Standard Progmetal 5-piece (r) configuration, playing light metal with
some time changes and keyboards and everyone hailing them as the most
amazing thing they've ever heard.
i'm getting tired of "prog"... there's more to composition than
stringing together complex sectinos of music with lyrics designed to
make reviewers call the lyricist intelligent, you know, the usual
buzzwordy style proglyrics...
this was and is one of my favorite aspects of DT... their lyrics are
very high quality... they mean something... even if james screams
"fucking shit," there is meaning to it, it's not just something like:
we must ride the tempest of our dreams
until we free the child within
the thoughts floating withing our minds
end the loneliness of our disarray
...blah blah
ok, i'll stop ranting in a second. my point? i dont care of DT puts
out their new labum next week or in 5 years, but something i have
recieved and come to expect from DT is quality, and i was
dissappointed by Awake. It is a very cool album to listen to, but the
quality is not at the same level as I&W, particularly, i believe,
because they were excited about doing a new record and rushed
themselves. this is why i am concerned about the new album, it seems
to be the same situation, i'm worried that they will be sacrificing
quality for quantity. which is exactly what i see with Magna Carta
records and the like... quantity over quality.
for those of you who haven't already, i recommend you check out the
following bands. i guarantee that these guys deliver some *serious*
quality music for someone looking for good progressive (not "prog")
and challenging music to listen to.
Deus Ex Machina (from italy): also a very unique sound, very fusion
influenced, but with a hard rock/psychedelic kind of sound, a
fantastic bunch of musicians, extremely thoughtful compositions and
creative arrangements, and top it off with *the* best singer of our
time. i'm not kidding, hearing Alberto Piras belting out "Ad Montem"
and "Arbor" could make you want to hang up your vocal chords for good.
DxM experiments with different compositional styles and sounds,
including some fantastic violin playing very reminiscent of
Shostakovich's llast few string quartets.definitely a band with a
sense for experiemntation and eccentricity.and sometimes they'll break
out into the wildest, manic jams you will ever heard. you can't go
wrong with any of their cds, i'd say either get them in order or start
with "Diacronie Metronomiche", their live album, which sounds as good
as a studio album, is nearly flawless, and contains some of the
highest-octane live performances ever, as well as a good selection of
their songs from each album. i'd say "Gladium Caeli" is my favorite
album of theirs.
Braindance: a very unique sound, very cinematic, with influences
ranging from prog to goth to metal to fusion to industrial to new age
and it all blends together into a sound unlike any other... and they
do it well. Fear Itself plays like a movie and contains some really
exellent and original songwriting.
A Piedi Nudi: these guys have a sound vaguely like DxM, but also very
different from anything else... "Creazione" has a very live sound,
very uncluttered, where the band's compositions and arrangements are
at the core and are uncluttered with overdubs... the recording is
crisp, clear, and full, and at all times you can hear what each member
is playing... each member is excellent, particularly the guitarist who
not only has extremely impressive taste, but can rip through a burning
solo like you wouldn't believe. a very interesting aspect of the band
is the way they don't always necessarily all play at the same time...
lots of times you will hear one instrument alone, or maybe guitars
accompanying a flute melody or vocals (in italian). the songs are
excellent, and well... naked and unashamed.
Prometheus: a band founded by two of robert fripp's crafty
guitarists... the band's philosophy is that music is like a hypercube,
which is a 2D image that, when looking carefully, appears to be
vibrating, shifting dimensions, and constantly moving and changing.
their music is very much like this, there is focus to their
compositions, with a depth to their sound... you will hear something
new with each listen, i guarantee it. The songs range from fusion
instrumentals, twisted "pop" songs, to algorhythmically generated
screaming metallic instrumentals.

and no, Tempus, i do *not* hate everything. don't get me started ;)

No, but there's some people here who swear by some other remedies: Dayquil Very Fine Fruit Punch Snapple Naya something called-- Equinox? and my personal fav: Ocean Spray Grapefruit Juice --maybe just mix these together and chugg; its guaranteed to clear you're mucous!
DTC (sorta) The other night I dreamed I walked into a music store and was walking by a display rack when I noticed they had the new Kevin Moore album (chromakey) on display. So I picked it up and bought it. It was called "Summoning" and I listened to it in the car on the way home. Not bad really. I guess I'm just hungry for some new music also.
I finally did buy Kevin Gilbert's thud and now that's all I hear anymore. good.

Okay, if I remember correctly, this is how it was done.
Everyone sent email to *one* person, who then collected, edited whatever, and *printed out* our pleas for ACOS to be recorded. The hardcopy was snailmailed to someone at the record company. We *did not* email-bomb their offices. We didn't even think it would work (at least I didn't). I think we sould recpect the band's wishes first (doubtless, 800+ lurkers have already sent 100^100 messages to Elektra/East West).
And what was that service that had an #800 that one could call and listen to parts of songs from? My friend and I had it one night a few years ago and (we were drinking) and I spent an hour on the thing listening to Rush, Dream Theater (they had part of ACOS on there), they even had stuff from Death's Symbolic on there! It all kind of sounded like crap though, but it was funny.

I like Awake enuff, ya know, but I think I only *like* about 50% of the songs and *cope* with the other 50%. I like The Mirror/Lie, LSOAD, Scarred, and Voices OK. But the rest seem to bore me a bit. I've never been bored listening to I&W or even WDADU for that matter. There's too much going on. With Awake, the quality of the composition seems to be a strong yet lacking in diversification. It needs more here and less there. I dunno. Mebbe cuz I'm a balladzy kinda guy and there really weren't any on Awake and TSM isn't my cream of the crop. LSOAD is great, though, and Voices has it's moments.. A healthy blend of I&W and Awake would be excellent. It would be kinda like what Superior did. I like the transitions from delicate piano melodies to heavy guitar ensembles as in Dreamtime/Tainted Silence (plug for Bernd!) I think that's what gets my kicks rockin in Voices and The Mirror. Also, what's this shit about a "true" DT fan has to like 'em no matter what? I think a "true" DT fan isn't afraid to come out and admit how they feel about the band, eh? Why hate you for it? I disagree, but wtf? It's still an almost free world, ain't it? I really dig Shadow Gallery, Enchant, Lemur Voice, and Altura. Can't wait for new albums, either. Even if they write DT-type prog in places, it's a helluva lot better to me than not listening to anything because "they sounds like one of my favorite bands." I don't see a problem with that. (shrug) Some people do. (shrug)
Anyway. there's my standpoint on this issue.

Not that I'm tired of it or anything, but with the influx of great new music I've gotten on Imports (Angra, Symphony X, etc...) and hard to find domestics, I haven't listened to Awake or I&W in a few months. Mike Bahr's quality work keeps them in the cd rotation though. :)

You're part way right. Experiment: Take a Milk Shake and drink a big gulp. While it's starting to trickle down your throat, try and sing. It gurgles, splurts and then finally fires out of your head onto the floor/wall/girlfriend near you. On a micro level, a little bit too much or too little moisture in the throat can cause imperfections in tone and flaws in the resonance in your voice. If the resonance is off, your throat seems to react differently and part of your range seems to get shut off or stops sounding right. If it's tone problems, you'll have trouble hitting some notes in key. It DEFINATELY makes a difference. If you're a vocalist, you probably know already (not meant as an insult... you may be different than me in the way your voice works... anything COULD be... my experience tells me this is how it works) the difference in vocal quality when your throat is in various conditions. The vocal cords themselves are not the only deciding factor in the characteristics of a good singing voice. How open your mouth, throat and nasal passages are can make a HUGE difference in your sound and whether or not it will suck.

Hello all,
A few poster have been asking about Threshold. I would most definitely recommend them to you if you like your prog. mixed with strong crunchy riffs and great no-nonsense metal play.
The nearest comparison on their 'sound' are Eldritch 'Seeds of Rage' but without so much effects. They are like the early Rainbo w/Dio e.g Rainbow Rising, Holy Diver albums but faster and obviously contemporary in their writing. Can other jammers agree on that comparison?. The vocals are slightly harsher compared to DT or Angra, but it's very appropriate for their style.
I bought 'Wounded Land' based on fellow jammer's recommendations, and as usual, I wasn't disappointed. And very soon after, the more sophisticated 'Psycadelicatesan'. I'm now after their live release 'Liveadelica' , and also wait in anticipation for their new release of 'Extinct Instinct' , some time in Feb. apparently.
I hope that helps. Now, can you guys tell me what Spocks Beard is like? Are they similar to Echolyn, worth it?. My local mail order service has been mentioning a band called Mastermind quite regularly, but I've heard nothing about them on the jam. Can you recommend them. Lastly, Magus, recommendations?
