I don't mean to bring up old threads but a while ago on here people were
agruing over MArillion. Well I was reading the jams and thought I would
listen to some of the people on here who were defending them..saying that
they are an excellent band and all. I mean you people are a pretty good
source. Well I bought on of thier albums, "Afraid Of Sunlight" And it
SUCKED!!!! I threw it out my car window the other day!!! Thanks for the
    great reviews!

I was wondering (forgive me if this has been done before) what will the
subject matter of Metropolis Part 2 be of? Maybe it will be about one
man's (or woman's) journey through the Metropolis within him or herself.
Just a thought. Any ideas on the matter?

Finally got the new Eric Johnson. It's very cool. It will be an
excellent disc to listen to when I want to do some mellowing out.

Although it is mellow, EJ still rocks! Waiting to see G3 again and
    maybe again.

    ----two more things----

Keep up the funny posts about the upcoming DT album(s), box sets, EP's
and games. It's a good laugh and I'm sure hoping others also
apprectaite the humor in our hour, well ok months of waiting.

    For the Ytsegame-

I vote that we add in the James LeBrie Sceam of the Dream : freezes all

    sense of direction.

    Hello,
Added four new discs to my collection: Nuno's Schizophonic, a
Napalm Death/Coalesce EP (bought on a whim), Miles Davis Sorcerer, and
the McLaughlin/DeLucia/DiMeola Passion, Fire, and Grace disc.
Reviews of Nuno are pretty much on track: very much mainstream
rock and not like Extreme. Sounds a bit like Beck and Foo Fighters, but
with a really talented guitarist. Best song: Pursuit of Happiness. It's a
kind of sardonic ballad, but with a real groove to it. The album wears
thin towards the end, but the early tracks are quite good. Anyone know if
and how he'll be touring? Pulling a Dweezil Zappa and doing most of the
work on the album will make live performance interesting.
The Guitar Trio disc was interesting, but I would have rather had
more melodic playing than "flash in the pan" stuff. The guys are great
players, but they just seem to trade solos. I prefer Ottmar Liebert's
flamenco work. Not a bad disc, just hoped for a little something
    different, is all.
As for the aforementioned EP and the Miles CD, haven't gotten to
them. Bought the former simply out of curiosity, I'll probably return it,
but I wanted to give it a shot. And since Miles is second only to Joe
Satriani as a God, the review is a given.
To the guy who grossly insulted the quality of the album Promised
Land because it "wasn't like Mindcrime" (Jeff Hayes, I believe): it's
called progressive music because the band PROGRESSES. If they remade
Mindcrime ten times, fans would probably say they were just capitalizing
on that one album's success. PL is an amazing album (IMHO), with
involving lyrics and complex musical ideas, and made for the third best
live show out of the more than fifty concerts I have seen. I'm just
sitting and wondering how one can call themselves a fan of a band after
waiting two years to get their most recent album, never mind giving a
    baseless review to boot...
To the chick who thinks she was justified in screaming that we
were all so impatient for the new DT because she waited TEN YEARS between
WDADU and I&W because she confuse the years due to her high school
graduation: your apology was just as antagonistic and presumptuous as
your original post. It didn't even come off as an apology. I'm tired of
preachy people screaming their opinions in here, then when they are
proven wrong (in this case: seven years wrong), they can't own up and
just say "Sorry!" I'm with Ptacek and others that an opinion is just an
opinion and should be taken as such, but when you shout insults to
accompany them, you're just begging for flames.
Oh, and you're taking a chance trading with anyone over the
internet or e-mail. But instead of trashing the people who have screwed
you, why don't you list the people who have accomodated you. It helps me
very little to know Al is a fink, I need to know who I can trust.
NINE DAYS TILL EMPIRE (the best of the three)!!!! ALREADY TOOK
THE DAY OFF, JUST LIKE I DID FOR STAR WARS!!!!!!!!!! (and Jedi)

    Jeremy,
Hmmmm, got to wonder if your not the elusive Mr. Mindcrimer (Everyone who
doesn't LOVE QR sucks!!!! *rant rant rant*) after that last post. Sorry to
step on your idols, but get a grip. IN MY OPINION I would rather listen to
a recording of "Zamphir Does Kenny Roger's Greatest Hits" than that
wretched excuse for an album called "Promised Land". I went in with an
open mind, not having heard ANY song off this CD (As I never listen to the
radio here in Houston cuz it, to paraphrase KorgX3, "sux nadz"). From the
get go I was like, "What in the hell happened to the songwriting abilities
of one of my favorite bands?!?!?" The days of twin guitar harmony leads
and melodic interplay between Chris and Michael are GONE!!! Now I'm
starting to hear rumors about the upcoming QR CD. And the general
consensus, FROM DIEHARD FANS LIKE MYSELF, are that it also SUX NADZ! I am
truly sorry if for some reason you were offended by my last post. But, as
many of us have said over and over and over... Opinions are like a**holes,
everyone has one. AND THEY SHOULD FEEL FREE to express it if they so
desire. I feel quite justified in what I said last post and your response of

I HATE TO FLAME BUT THIS IS JUST STUPID.. LOOK WHAT HE SAID ABOUT PROMISED
    LAND!!!!!!!

showed both your intolerance of other's opinions and a general disrespect
towards those expressing an opinion other than YOURS. Well, heartfelt pity
goes out to those as ignorant as you. Were it up to individuals like
yourself, I'm sure that all of us would be "[in a closet bound and
gag[ged]". Hooray for free speech. And in closing... Just picked up the
Operation: Livecrime Boxed CD set. DAMN IT ROCKS!!!! I love these guys'
old stuff!!! So to sum it all up:
    PL = Gag, choke, puke
    Pre-PL = Way cool, bitchin'!
    I - M - H - O !!!!!!!! Comprende, amigo? Gracias.

    Later, Jammurz,
    Jeff

PS - If we're gonna continue harping on this opinion crap, let's take it to
PRIVATE e-mail rather than wasting anymore bandwidth here. I mean after
all, it is the DT Mailing list and all I did was express an opinion on
other (so-called) prog metal. Kewl? Kule. Shred 'til yer dead!!!!

Fine. I'll just do ACoS. Of course I'm rewriting the solo that
basically cycles up a scale in 3 octaves before doing the chromatic thing.
It does nothing for me. :) Perhaps I'll FINALLY give JP those guitar
lessons he's been begging me for. And we'll use my DR-5 instead of that
pesky Mike Portnoy-Machine Gun drums. Perhaps I'll play the bass with a
pick and sing all the vocals too. We don't need those silly keyboard
    parts. Scratch em.

Pardon me, Jeremy Kube, can you please regurgitate that pill, and
pass it this way? Someone needs it a bit more than you do! Satu, slow
down, my man. D-Man isn't trying to help anyone limit his freedom of
speech. He's trying to help a mothers club scare each other so they can
feel good about themselves (I'm JOKING, D!). If you don't want to be of
assistance in this cause, just don't respond to it. I asked D Man to
clarify the reasons behind this request, and he made it clear that he's
not trying to aid in the limiting of free speech. Just chill and don't
help his mom out if you don't want to.

ok, ok...here goes......thanks to dman for figuring out the songs in my
    pre-part-2 post,

pat sullivan, i agree with quite a bit of your observations. esp. the one
about how ad and sur. sound better live......i hate those songs. not really
hate them, but like them more live.

this next set of song critiquesis dedicated to jazzmin, who so kindly forgot
to put the list of albums for sale, and asks if i should be a columbia house
critic or laugh. or maybe an insane asylum would do me good. hmm......i hear
the asylum guys get better benefits than the columbia house folks.......so i
might like a straitjacket. also makes a kinky sex tool.

    here goes.

"light to dark, dark to light..."

no me gusta mucho el sonido de la guitara. suena como cereal, o como dokken,
y yo ODIO el sonido de george lynch. lo odio. y tambien no me gusta mucho el
sonido del synthesizer (fuck you, i don't know the word for synth in

    5- metropolis.

so it's really dark, and i'm entering this dark secluded mansion (not
manson), and it's really dark and foreboding, and then BOOM! wow!! now THIS
is the "dream theater." it's an arena, and people are watching my moves. i
don't know what i'm doing, but that's irrelevant. everything just works so
well. the music is awesome- it fits exactly with the words. "the both of you
will be confined to this mind" is a powerful line. so is the line "it hides
away and will never be heard of again." note, the chord and the bass. a c
major 7 chord with the e in the bass. THAT is such a powerful chord. so far,
this may be the best song on the album.

now we come onto the snags. i still think the instrumental section is a bit
too long. the beginning of it...ahh, i could live without it. that and the
yngwie keys/guitar duo jizz (not jazzmin) part. the part after that is
brilliant, however. the techno part. it goes on with the theme of wanting to
rip someone's head off and shit down their throat, as pull me under makes me
feel like sometimes. great use of texture and dynamics- the part where they
do that one riff, and then kev does it alone, nice and quiet, followed by a
    brilliant solo.

then comes that last part in the instrumental section. wow. breathtaking.
again, i'm on this trip (maybe an acid trip), just moshing like a bastard
(and i hate to mosh), and just be taken further and further, and just land at
    "before these leaves have fallen".

ladies and gentlemen, THIS is brilliant fucking songwriting. being led thru
all this anger and noise and dissonance, and ending on a dsus2 chord. and on
top of it, brilliant playing. best i've heard of kevin, jp, portnoy (thus
far), myung. james captures the feeling wonderfully. this just gave this
album its first 2 and a half stars. not bad for one song.

ok, enough for now. digest yet more. part 3 will happen sometime soon. i'll
be in pittsburgh this weekend, starting thursday, visiting pitt law school.
fuck you all and your valentine's day, and i'll talk to you soon. if i have
time, i'll send part 3 before i leave. peace.

I think you are making too much ado about nothing (hmm...

way our phone bills are not so expensive... The rate is like $.04 for
each 4 minutes in a local call, for 18 seconds in a regional call, and
long distance varies. But, that way, our maintenance rates are surely
cheaper than yours... I think. And those rates varies for different
times and days (i.e., on Saturdays and Sundays, local calls are $.04
    regardless of the duration).
Think a little about it... It's not that bad...

Well, one reason would have been because you read my post carefully and decided to help out a fellow jammer instead of your knee jerking involuntarily after seeing the words "mother," "offensive," and "lyrics" in the same sentence.

You obviously have NO idea what I asked for, or what I explained. My mother's school is sponsoring an Awareness Day, and she wants to make people aware of stuff that exists in the world. She's not presenting to legislators, or Tipper Gore. She's presenting to sheltered college students.

Only the government can censor. Regular citizens merely have the option to buy or not to buy. Beisdes, that's not what this request was about.

    > I don't know what your mom is after of course..

    No, that's obvious.

    > but I HATE when they put down the bands I love !

Then you should start listening to Bush.
