    Morning all

welcome to the Mountain Dew mailing list, as approved by the winners of the
1997 Super Bowel, the Green Day Packers (whoops, small mistake there).

Cough, cough, clears throat, frees vocal chords - I recently read an interview
with James Hetfield in which he was asked what he does to keep his voice in trim
during a long tour. James himself didn't give an answer, but Kirk and Lars both
shouted "James sucks. Now we all know...

Where's Damon when you need him? He'd do all the keyboard parts for this tribute
thingy. But could all of you who are interested in doing this set up a common
distribution list or just send all of the "I'll do the triangle on ..." posts
to Vince/Jazzmin/Hector: this will reduce the number of digests dropping down
into our mailboxes considerably. 8 digests within 24 hours is a bit much.

I just bought 'Undertow' by Tool. Wierd and amazing. Very powerful songs, no
fancy frills, good drumming, just heavy enough. Completely out of character,
I even paid attention to the lyrics - as I said, wierd and amazing. WARNING:
don't listen to this album if you are easily offended by anything at all.

You can expect reviews of the following gigs soon: Korn (20 Feb.), Tool
(21 Feb.) and My Dying Bride/Sentenced/Therion (26 March).

For all of you Tiamat fans out there, the new album is apparently finished and
is due for release in April.

Thought of the day: why are there interstate highways on Hawaii?

    stay safe and happy listening

    >it's great. Also there was not a lot of keyboards, and when there was,(to
    >me, non producer) it was mixed way under the guitar. And not many guitar
    >solos either.
I don't think that we mixed the keys under the guitar.
You can hear it all. Sometimes the keys are a little behind, that's
true but it fits to the song itself then and Jan is really satisfied
with the production himself. What we do is music that has to create
emotions. Kinda filmmusic. And when the guitar has to roar then
the keys have to be in the back. And if the keys are in the foreground,
the guitars have to step back. That's it.
As for the 'many solos' we don't even WANT to put too many solos
into the songs just for being there. A solo is a nice thing to divide
two parts from each other or just to put some progression into
a song. But I really don't like it if there are too many people
fiddling around in songs. It destroys the song itself IMHO. Ok,
this depends on the one who plays the solo....

    Ok. All for now.

    Bye.

    Bernd.

Strange how I still communicate with Mr. Fibraio through private e-mail from time to time. Very strange indeed. Even stranger is how this has been going on since about early 1995. Do me a favor and get the facts straight before you dream history like this.

    Dammit, bested again...

    Should this hurt? ;)

Anyway, anyone looking for a name for a progressive metal band just needs to read through that "BEST PROGRESSIVE LABEL" list. Cuneiform, Cyclops, Laser's Edge... Now where is Leviathan in all of this?

Thank you, we are CYCLOPS!! In case some of you in the crowd are wondering about our eye patches, it's because we are to date the only progressive metal band where each member only has one eye!! Thank you, yes, that last one was our new single "No Man" off of our new album "Odyssey."

Once again we are CUNEIFORM, please be sure to pick up our demo disc, available at the snack bar. All the lyrics are, coincidentally, written in cuneiform, so have fun with those decoder rings...which we will be throwing out during the encore...

Did I mention I saw Gary Hoey last Friday? Whee-HEW!! His cover of "Red House" absolutely STOMPED the one performed at G3, both vocally and guitarically. Speaking of G3, thinking back to those lifeless I-IV-V blues jams during the encore where Satriani was the only one capable of staying within the minor pentatonic scale and nailing Da Blues, methinks Hoey would have been a most useful anchor for those songs.

Remarkably enough he was straight picking the whole night. No tapping, no sweep picking, no shrieking harmonics, no whirling the guitar around his neck like a demon, and best of all he was playing FOR THE FANS. Man was he having a good time. Loose loose loose. His acoustic mariachi solo was cool, too. Plus he mentioned after the show that he's gunning for a spot on the next G3 tour. :) :) :)

His bassist, Ray, was the Stealth Master. His hands moved very little but his popping technique was furiously quick. His style of soloing was a ballistic pogo-stick of rising and falling arpeggiated notes, all of which were popped so hard they made various people in the crowd melt like those aliens in "Mars Attacks!" He played a six-string and loved hextuplets. Or machine-like sixteenth notes which he ripped out without breaking a sweat.

Hoey & Co. played a song which someone said was from his first album, which I haven't been able to locate. The song was called "Strut" or something to that cryptic effect... Anyone know the real title? He had an octave pedal engaged for the verses, and this song had my head nodding from start to finish. A real bull-raper, that groove...

The crowd was densely packed and ravenous, which really surprised me. It could have been because I was in the second row of thrashing bodies, but I was literally using my elbows as extensions of my struggling lungs (if ya know what I'm talkin'bout) when Hoey soared into "Desire." Of course, with a floor full of shred-guitarists, all WAY too conscious of their precious fingers (bwaaahahaha you know all we are) and/or beautiful Firehouse- caliber hair to even THINK about flailing their arms around, none of us got TOO volatile. ;>

As the Hoey Afficionado standing behind me put it so bluntly after the show, "No cheese, man...that's why guys like him and Satriani are still around. Solid playing and no cheese." And yes, MICHAEL. ANGELO.'s leather pants were part of the evening's discussion. Plus I got to meet a fellow yeetsayjam-mer at the show - Bald Savatage, aka Trevor. "I'm more a listener than a player." he said, which reminded me a tiny bit of the tranquil life-philsophies found in "Dinotopia"...

slow the roll a second.. sure, you came up with the idea... and vinnie got off his ass and put it into action. whats more is i'm sure he'd be more than happy to collaberate with you on it, no use drawing some venom in the recording of this.. i dunno about everyone else, but i'm still planning on hector's studio being the main bash for this thing and possibly throwing a ytsecon IV there.. i dont think any ONE person should organize this, and i dont think that the tracklist was pre-picked, if you havent noticed there were no songs with completely blank jammer signups, all the songs picked were picked because people wrote in saying they wanted to play on those songs i'm pretty sure.. so lets concentrate on getting it done, now how it gets done

OK. I am a guitarist, but the best I can do is Cradle of Filth, Gorefest, Metallica, Gwar and the intro to "Pull me Under" (which is just a long way of saying that I have no ambitions to be on the tribute album). How about where to order the album? I want to buy it! By the way...this is all very nice but the songs are going to be *good*, aren't they? I have the "Information Superhighway Stars" Deep Purple tribute cassette and that, barring one song, is complete and utter tripe. The intentions are good, but someone who can even screw up the complete and utter timing of the regular "Child in Time" riff should not be allowed to record :-) Pick good people. There's been so many tribute-related messages that I stopped reading them all. Will Mike Bahr do the disc's production and distribution? I sure hope so.

It's great to feel this friendly vibe going around, all these people getting together to make something that their heart is in. Well, I have some vacation time coming up that I need to use by the end of the summer. I am making plans to do some cross-country road tripping in my truck. I have some friends that are out in Yuma, which appears to be about 3 hours or so from Nogales, right?

I'm not a musician, but I like the tribute concept and would be willing to facilitate getting folks to the studio. Bear in mind though, that the truck doesn't have warp drive yet, so I'd have to work a reasonable path between here and Nogales that could accomodate as many as possible...

Depending upon when this all emerges, the YtseLandCruise may be passing by a town near you :) Film at 11....
