wasnt the origional idea on this whole thing just to basically record all the

    Hi all,
Hector and I talked tonight, and we came up with a rough idea for
how to do this tribute thing. We want to get this thing done, we're serious
about it, and we have a timeline set for the summer right now. Let's get
all the people that are local (AZ jammers) into the studio as quick as
possible to get their recordings done. I mean within the next two months.
Here's the biggie, let's set up something like a Ytsecon IV here in Tucson,
AZ in June. I don't know how to organize one, nor do I have the time, so
I'm asking for help here from people who've done this before. From there
we'd take people into the studio to record their parts. Basically whoever
is signed up for a part and/or comes to the Ytsecon. After that, we'll try
some of the mailed-in tapes and see if we can put them in the mix correctly.
We're requesting ADAT tapes from people doing mail-ins. I'm sorry if this
causes some problems for those of you out there with tight $$$ (I DO hear
ya!), but we want to make sure this comes out good, steady, and tight. If
you want my address or Hector's for the mail-ins, private e-mail please.
If you can't do a multi-track recording, then I suggest this:
    1) Get a good metronome and a set of headphones.
    2) Have the click track go through the headphones, but not out in the open.
    3) Open mic your amp/drum kit/PA/etc., and record what the mic picks up.
    4) Count off 1, 2, 3, 4 or 1, 2, 3, or whatever (vocally) to start off the
song. That way we can synchronize your tape with the rest of the recordings.
    5) PLEASE know your part like the back of your hand. I don't want to turn
away someone because their part just doesn't cut it. I'm a nice guy and I
hate to have to play the asshole. We've got enough time between now and
June that almost anyone on here that wants to play can learn their part(s)
    really well.
The reason we ask for ADAT is so we can have more than one channel
and it's compatible with what we already are set up for. We want a person
to record their parts on one channel and record a click track on another
channel. I dunno much about these because I've never used ADATs before.
Hector has. He can answer any questions you might have about ADATs and our
    recording equipment.
Hector, you said you've got access to all that amplifier/drum/bass
equipment, my question is can all the ytsejammers dropping by to record use
it, or will they have to bring their own gear?
Back on track, We're going to shoot for high quality here. We know
we're not Dream Theater and most of us (Marcel and a few others excluded)
are not professional musicians so we know it won't be perfect, but we're
gonna be pretty nit picky. I guess the only advice I can give is that if
you're gonna send a tape, be satisfied with it. I feel that a person is
his/her own worst critic, and if they are satisfied with it, others will be
blown away. For example, Hammett from Metallica absolutely HATES some of
his old work, he isn't satisfied with it. To others, it's what defined
thrash guitar. To each his own.
Last, MIKE BAHR, we need to talk. You and Hector and I need to get
together in person to discuss things. You're experienced in the CD making
thing, you're local, and we need your input and your help.

    Later guys,

Peace be with yuz'all and God bless,

            ~Vince

p.s. Lots of ytse-heat here in the summer!! Prepare ye selves! Big Ytsejam
pool party & recording session. :)

Earlier today I e-mailed Vince and asked if I asked if I could snag the
guitar part for Metropolis (or ANY guitar part for that matter). So
Vince if you're out there, do I get it? I really want to be a part of
this. I'm a guitar player of ten years, so I have the ability. Again,
7-string stuff is no problem since I have a Universe. If all the guitar
parts are taken I'll do voice samples or something like that. I just
want to be involved guitar-wise so JP can listen to it and go "Man this
brother is kewl!" Please don't go (and record the tribute without my
    involvement)!

Okay for those of you w/o ADAT, use the recording process I
described in my last post and record to a .wav file at NO LESS THAN 44 KHz.
This file may be upwards 90 megs or so. Put it on a ZIP drive disk and send
it my way. I'll take it to the studio and see if it can be fit into the mix
correctly. Sound good? I dunno if this will work, but I'm more than
willing to give it a shot.

The most amazing thing is about to happen. A band from New Hampshire called "Thanks to Gravity" and they are putting out a major label debut. They do a cover of the song done in rock format. The Lead man, Andy Happell (Acoustic Guitar, violin, vocals) plays violin while a keyboardist follows him, the song actually has vocals too. If you are interested (I hope you are and I promise you won't be disappointed) Let me know and I can hook you up with a copy. Let me know. J

Sorry about that last message, I accidentally included the entire last jam = ( I hope the gateway refuses it (although I doubt it since pretty much anything gets by it). I was wondering how the tribute CD is going to be distributed. I would contribute, but I'm only a part-time bass player, and I could only do Erotomania (- the solo : ) or UAGM. I think it would be funny if those doing the CD could get it done before DT finally releases the new album.

With all due respect, Vince, I came up with this idea. I'm organizing it. I have had lots of experience coordinating (and promoting) major media events -- I'm not just some bitch who wants to control everything.

Please let me know, jammers, if you're interested (I'll keep updating the list). When one person takes it upon himself to determine the set list without asking if people 1)want to play those songs and 2)CAN play them, things start to fall apart. It hasn't been a week yet and already Someone has tried to botch things.

Everyone (yes, even Vince) is asked to participate in some way or other; it would be cool if we could throw a Con into it also. Right now we are in the planning stages, and it is too soon to limit ourselves. In a couple of weeks enough people should have stepped up (leapt at the chance?) and then we can pare down the list. From posts, it is obvious that we'll be doing Erotomania and UAGM and Metropolis, but are we going to tell someone who is able to play four parts on SDV that we aren't going to do it because it wasn't on a list proposed the second day? I don't think so.

Let's have all hands up by 28 February -- that's a Friday. THEN I'll list the songs on the jam, and we'll take a poll for the undecided stuff. This is a tribute FROM THE YTSEJAMMERS, not from one or two people. All of us should be in on the decisions.

Here is a plan I think we might be able to run off to make this CD take place.

    A) Everyone that CAN'T got to AZ or part B, record your part of DAT

    Date: Anytime before D

    B) Someone in Tennesse said they had access to a studio. Set up a few weekends there for any East/Midwest Jammers that can't go to AZ

    Date: Spring

    C) This would only be possible if someone on the East coast can get access to a studio, but do the same thing as B, but on the East coast (anyone know the guys in Shadow Galley, they should be done with their stuido soon - BTW it's in Allentown, PA hour from Philly)

    Date: Spring

    D) Ytsecon IV in AZ with recording sessions.

    Date: Early Summer

    E) Mixing/Producing/Put this shit together

    Date: Summer

    F) Put it out on CD.

    Date: Summer/Fall

---------------------------------------------------------------- This is just a suggestion, but I like to plan things ahead and see what is possible and what is not.

I think we can do this. And with a little bit of sweat and desire and a little help here and there. ----------------------------------------------------------------

I also have acees to a home recorder. But I want to fly out to AZ (as long as someone can pick me up at the airport).

Also I know I drummer that might be handle any of the parts, but she only would do it, if we need it---she's not a ytsejammer nor a huge DT fan, yet (her brither is so he could do it too---I forgot).

    More ideas to come.
