damn! i thought i was the only one (and kain and stryker) who noticed
this on the ppv... the slaping farting bass sound ,and i first thought
it was my crappy copy..then i got a hi fi stereo one (wink wink omar i
need it back) and still there.. but i have several other awake boots
from other dates ..and the bass sounds fine.. in one of them it doesnt
sound fat enough (like it had no low ) but thats better than that
farting sound

As a keyboard player and MIDI freak, I must say the DO NOT, under any
circumstances, record keyboard parts via MIDI at the musician's home and
then play them back on a different keyboard for the final, unless you have
exactly the same rig at the receiving and exactly the same sound. It just
doesn't sound right, and no one will be satisfied. Synth sounds have
nuances in their attacks, decays and velocity curves between synths and
sounds that influence how a part is played. I know that whenever I decide
to change a part in something I'm recording, I almost always need to
re-record the part in order to make it sound natural. The best solution
would be to get a player in the studio (obviously) or go with whatever
method you have for audio exchange among other players.
If you do decide to go the MIDI route for exchange, the studio people
better have soneone to tweak the notes so that they sound right for the
patch they use in the studio (i.e. a slower attack will make all the notes
sound late so you'll have to move them earlier and vice-versa) and the
musicians better be prepared for the disappointment of hearing a jeyboard
part attributed to them that sounds nothing like what they played. Anyone
remember Union by Yes? They MIDIed Wakeman's parts and fiddled with the
sounds, which is why Wakeman hates the album.
Having said that, I wish I could participate. I've got the hardware and
can drive to Arizona, but I don't think I have either the time or the
talent to do so. :(

Whoever it was that said a while back that "heavy" doesn't necessarily
involve loud guitars and stuff was absolutely right. I just listened to
Someone Else? on PL (my fave QR album) and it is very heavy. Especially if
you've had a bad day.
quick question: In Sava: Streets, when Jon sings "Spock and Kirk have had
enough and no one's left to beam me up," while being very effective in the
song, has a minor problem. Scotty's the one that did all the beaming!

I just recently read about this Dream Theater tribute idea and am
insterested in it. I would be interested in doing any of Dream Theater's
instrumental songs with some other guys. I have the access to the
equipment here in my hometown Johnson City, TN and a good place to use.
None of us can really sing, but if push comes to shove, I could call
somebody in to do the vocals for us. That is if all the instrumentals
are taken.
If anybody that is serious about this would get back to me, that would
be nice. If all instrumentals are taken, let me know of a song we could
do. We might be able to do a version of the Killing Hand and send it in.
If the person who is the head of this idea sees this, please reply.

Also, if this is a really serious project, I can do the cover art for

I CAN however dump the existing midis into my sheet music program and
print it out. It won't be perfect, but what the hey? It's better
than nothing at all, I guess. I've got all the key solos for TTT in
the Guitar mag that had them included with the tabs. So, I'm in line
now for the keyboard parts of...
Metropolis, Scarred, Learning to Live, and Take the Time.
If any other keyboard players wanna take part in any, I call dibs on
LtL and Metropolis. You can take the others if ya really want. :)

Hi all,
I've been trying to think of ways to make the whole tribute thing
more fair, and I came up with a few ideas. First off, Jazz and I need to
talk. I think she could be a great help to this project and she obviously
has the drive, so Jazz--E-MAIL ME with your ideas. I'd love to work with ya.
Second, I'm scrapping the song list. I tried to pick the songs
that I figured everyone liked and at least some people wanted to play, but
I've gotten tooooooooo many complaints for this to be a real "fan" tribute.
Therefore I'm setting up a vote. Whether you plan on taking part in the
recording process or not, I want you all to vote on which songs you want to
see on this. Send all e-mail votes to me privately at VGL@U.ARIZONA.EDU
with nothing in the main body and let the subject be the song you're voting
for. Everyone gets three votes. This means you can vote for your 3 fav
songs (in 3 separate e-mails), and 10 days from now, I'll count 'em all up
and post to the jam what the most popular songs are. However many of these
we can fit on one CD, we will. Lines (in the Sand) are open now. Any
repeats (like voting 3 times for "LIE") will be deleted, as will any that I
get after 12:00 am MST, Tuesday Feb 25th. Okay?
Third, instead of saying this person does this and this person does
that, how about this: Everyone sends their tapes in the mail (even those
coming to AZ) ASAP, and whoever does the best job gets the spot. Does that
sound good? It's the most fair thing I can think of because I've had so

I gotta give "props" to all the people organizing this tribute. Jazzmin
(Idea), Vince (takin' the ball and rolling with it) Hector (assistance). I
really think that the whole thing is great. It seems like just yesterday
everyone was at eachother's throat because of this east/west shit. I have a
few questions.
1. Vince could you post an updated list of who's doing what?
2. How long until I would have to record my part? (I need a couple of months
to practice my double bass work on Metropolis.)
3. I have signed up to do drums on Silent man. It has never been recorded
with drums, does anyone have any ideas for what I should do? (Silent man
"live" was done with drums, does anyone have a copy of it live?) I think
that a real simple beat would do the trick.
A suggestion, get the "Working Man" tribute album. It could give
you some cool ideas for how to do the tribute for DT (considering that DT,
WAS the tribute anyway)
On another note, thanks to the guy who set up the website to send a
petition to East/west, could you tell me when you plan on sending out the
petition? Don't be too long.
I heard a rumor (no sources named) that DT was dropped from
East/West when they did some "House Cleaning" is it speculation or is it
fact? Does anyone know?

ok, i have something to add to this.. first of all, its been discussed-
whill these be as close as possible to true sounding dt songs like the
albums, or do we want to do our own twists of the songs? i'm gonna try out
for uagm, and if i were to do it, i'd like to see it done as near album like
as possibe. if i had a seven string, i think it would be fun to do
something like a hip hop version of caught in a web or something though,
just something totally nuts.. another problem we're facing- recording this
IS going to be a lot harder than we think it is now. drums will most likely
have to be laid down first if any correlation is to be made in the final
pieces. this also comes down to will the people playing the tunes be able
to handle them? i mean, we're not professional musicians (yet;) and i
assume there are parts people cant necessarily tackle and may need to work
on. i think we should do it if you sign up for a song- make sure you can
play the song, dont have doubts about yourself! if i had to go in and lay
down guitars for UAGM tomorrow i'm confident i could, even tho i have things
i'd like to smooth out a few things. i think if a complete style of a song
is changed thats totally cool, but if we want close to original versions
lets try to cut down watering them down with easier parts we can play to a
minimum.. i'm not saying if you cant play something to go fook yourself,
theres things i'm sure we'll see changes made to, but i also think we gotta
give it our best shot to nail it as close as possible if thats the feel
we're going for. now that everybody wants a piece of the action and we're
totally jumping in in tons of directions, this is just gonna get more
complicated and more fucked up. i'm beginning to think in order for songs
to be done all the parts may have to be done in the same studio for that
particular song, so if we could, lets figure out who wants to play what and
find out all the places possible to record. i'd like to possibly make it to
hectors studio if i get in on this thing, i cant think of another place i
could do it.. this place is a good focal point for us to try and hit i
think, and if you cant, try and find some people in your area who can go in
on it with you.. i'm not saying any other way wont work, but just to keep it
easy at first.. this is what its down to
1- the decision on if the song is gonna be album-like, or totally changed
and if everyone taking part on that song agrees with it.. almost leads me to
say we should do them all album like but then there may be people who cant
handle all the album stuff, dt is definately one hell of a bunch of
musicians and theyre stuff is extremely tough for anyone to play, so this is
gonna be a hurdle right there
2- actually getting in and doing it, getting everything laid down, panned
out, done up, and spiff-maxed.
i mean, we have a real shitload of work ahead of us just panning this all
out now... now that we're going to be auditioning parts and possibly forming
groups up and whatever else the hell there is, this is NOT gonna be easy,
but i think that if we go in this strong we can do it.
