So I'm at my apartment just hanging out and ACOS is on the stereo.
My roommates friend, after hearing the ending part of "The Darkest
of Winters" (the part with the killer guitar riff and keys solo),
asks me what the band is 'cause he liked what he just heard.
I answer his question and then proceed to play "Ytsejam."
    He didn;t like it.

He said it was too simple.

    That is all.

One of the things that record companies make sure to place gold-star
stickers next to in the recording contract is the little item which
states that the band must record for that record company exclusively,
except when given permission to go on other labels for soundtracks,
tributes, etc. To record an album and put it out by themselves would
leave DT wide open for a breach of contract lawsuit. So if they wanted to
do this, they would have to get out of their contract first.

True, but like you said, the distribution is shit compared to what a
major label like Elektra or even a prominent "indie" like Metal Blade can
    do.

up by CMC. But I digress.....

I don't think Megadeth is thrash anymore, judging by Scott Cook's post
a while back about an interview with Mustaine about their forthcoming
album. Anthrax's last album was more hardcore than thrash. I guess
Pantera's still thrash, but I wouldn't be the one to know because I'm not
a fan and am not familiar with their material. Metallica doesn't consider
themselves "metal" anymore, let alone thrash. I'm not familiar with
Tourniquet. White Zombie is more heavy metal than trash, with their
industrial/dance rhythms. Ozzy has always been straightforward metal.
And I'm not that familiar with Sacred Reich and Corrosion of Conformity,
although I'll see COC open for Metallica tonight in Cleveland. I guess my
connotation of thrash is speed, something you mosh, or "thrash" to. Any
    thoughts from other 'Jammers?

Since the tribute would be a "legit" creation, there are some
low-cost avenues to explore in production that I will make sure and make
known to whomever decides to put their time and effort into doing so.

When you're doing a home-grown bootleg production thing like I am,
you often feel like you're being "nickel-and-dimed-to-death". The blank
CDRs are cheap enough, but everything else adds up AWFUL quick. I'm lucky
Equinox pays so well or I wouldn't have time or money to work on these
CDs, which are easily my most intense hobby.

I have been asked a lot about whether I would produce and
distribute the tribute (stop rhyming, I mean it! Anybody want a peanut?)
and I would have to say YES... IF and only if I can commit to having it
done and shipping within a reasonable time. My entire life timeline was
thrown way the hell off course by the seizure of the Tori print run by 3M
last fall, and I'm just now beginning to show signs of recovery.
Production and shipping on the Metallica Wrath disc actually has gone
pretty durn well, but since the Tori problems delayed me by many months,
my Metallica customers have been rightfully upset at having to wait. Same
thing with the DT Precious Things production. The actual production isn't
taking much longer than it should... it's just taking place months later
than I had planned it to. All this being said, I have three things to do
within the next five months or so... Precious Things, Darkest of Winters,
and Virtual Songs. Assuming I can catch up to near-current pace, I could
indeed produce and distribute the DT tribute disc.

If I can't do it, Todd Strickland has said he will give it a go,
and Jim Colberg knows how it's done as well, plus we could look into
having it made legitimately and professionally at a pretty good cost
scheme... I would sure like to be able to sell those discs at $10-12 and
have the project still stay solvent.

Actually, their new album is supposed to be "everything fans wanted
in LOAD but didn't get" or something like that. If I remember correctly,
    Mustaine says it's got 4 MTVish songs, 4 all-out thrash/speed metal songs,
    and 4 in-between songs.

    >Anthrax's last album was more hardcore than thrash.

Dunno 'bout you guys, but I considered most of that album thrash.
Upbeat, groovin, fast guitars, double bass, etc. "Kick-start to turn me
over. Punch drunk but I'm still sober."

    >I guess
    >Pantera's still thrash.

Yeah they are. They're a band that's very proud to be metal. That,
and Dimebag's playing, are the main reasons I like 'em as much as I do.

    >Metallica doesn't consider
    >themselves "metal" anymore, let alone thrash.

I heard that in one interview too, but you'll probably find out
tonight when you see them. They're very much still thrash metal, even if
LOAD (w/ the exceptions of "Ain't My Bitch" and maybe "Wasting my Hate")
isn't. I actually like LOAD, but I really don't feel that the band is gonna
continue down that direction. At least I hope not. I think that stunt at
the MTV Europe awards said something. Cool to see 'em playin' Motorbreath
    again live.

    >I'm not familiar with
    >Tourniquet.

Christian speed metal. Double bass in almost every song. Very cool
    stuff.

    >White Zombie is more heavy metal than trash, with their
    >industrial/dance rhythms.

I just bought a live bootleg from Rio '96, and it's VERY thrashy IMHO.

    >Ozzy has always been straightforward metal.

Ever "thrashed-out" to Paranoid? I KNOW I have. Point proven tho...

    >And I'm not that familiar with Sacred Reich and Corrosion of Conformity,

Very cool bands. Seen SR live and they basically preach thrash.
Very heavy. Also, if you only consider "Lie", I guess you could call Dream
    Theater thrash ;p haha!

Some people have been wondering what the we're trying to achieve with the petition (i thought that was obvious :-)). We want a new album! But why write to the record company? Because if we're gonna complain, we might as well do it where it may make a difference. I mean, there really isn't much use in complaining on the jam or to your friends; they can't do anything about it anyway, and everyone already knows it has been too long since the last album. But maybe Elektra don't know that we all feel that way, and so it is our best chance of making things happen. Right?

What?!?!? You need to re-check your sources, man! Pat Benatar's the new vocalist, not Cyndi!

Cyndi Lauper? Christ, how do people manage to come up with this stuff!!!

Oh, and as part of the big send-off for James, not ONLY did DT make him shave his head (D-Man, you scooped me on that one), they also drugged him and had someone tattoo "I like to eat Lego's pieces with my cereal. Dang, they sure are crunchy!!!" on his forehead. Then the whole band (yes, with NEW vocalist Pat Benatar) took a picture with James (who was still unconscious and drooling at the time) and my source also tells me that they made LOTS of duplicates and autographed photos (minus James' signature) will be mailed out to all CURRENT (that means "not future," so if you're not in it now, you're screwed) DTIFC members. And we're talking poster-size photos here, so you can see James' new tattoo AND his drool clearly. (Man, those guys in DT are ALWAYS thinking of their fans.)

And there's MORE good news: due to the change in vocalist, EastWest has decided to get DT into the studio TOMORROW, and the album has been re-scheduled for release NEXT WEEK. My source says this sudden change of plans came about because the CEO of EastWest's parent company is apparently a HUGE Pat Benatar fan and he said he wants a new Benatar CD by week's end or the entire EastWest management will be fired.

Anyway, like I said, Cyndi Lauper is DEFINITELY not in the band. I know this 'cuz my source said so and it never lies.

And in the words of George Carlin (hilarious guy, BTW), "OK, that's enough o' that."

    Greetings Jammers,

My name will be new to you, but I've been watching from the shadows and have some of you to thank for turning me on to some really fantastic new stuff like Magellan and Cairo while waiting for plugs at East West to remove their thumbs from their asses.

Anyway, through my various media connections who shall remain anonymous, I snagged an advance CD copy of "Hear In The Now Frontier," the new Queensryche album and thought I'd give ya an overview:

Four words to remember: BE PREPARED FOR CHANGE!! I mean R A D I C A L change. This album is such a far cry from anything they've ever put out, it may actually scare more than a few fans away, especially those who jumped on the Empire/Promised Land bandwagon for songs like "Silent Lucidity" and "Lady Jane." If you are expecting another Empire or Promised Land, you are in for one BIG sonic wake-up call. The true fans who have come to EXPECT change will even be blown away by this one. I sure as hell was!! They cranked the guitars to 11 for this one and pulled out all the stops!!

Aside from "Sign of the Times" which is almost "Last Time in Paris" with alternate lyrics, there is nothing to compare this album to although "Saved" sounds like it could be a <very modernized> outtake from Warning or Rage. Highlights include the dreamy, yet rockin' radio-ready tracks "Hero" and "Miles Away" and don't get me wrong "Sign of the Times" does rock too!

Chris DeGarmo does a fine job filling Geoff's shoes on "All I Want," but the highlight of the album and my fave new QR tune is the balls-to-the-wall "Anytime Anywhere" <no pun intended; it is about sex addiction>. The riffs on this one will really ryche your world and resonate in your head for hours after ya hear it!! Don't mean to rub salt in any wounds, but thought I'd prepare you for the experience you WILL want to have on March 25th... -- "Can someone please let me know how we spun out of control? Has the captain let go of the wheel?" "Sign of the Times" Queensryche

Persons who are plannng this need to know who CAN play the songs. Perhaps you are so superior on your guitar that you should go replace John Petrucci. Maybe you should tour with G-3. However, in planning this tribute you MUST realize that not everyone is as talented as you apparently are, especially when it comes to the drum lines. If you make a list of songs people can't play, you're setting yourself up for failure.

    >>We are not dream theater, no matter how much any particular >>jammer can do it is impossible to include a lot of people when others are >>not able to play certain (or most) songs. For this reason we MUST allow >>people to tell us what they are able to play. It will not be a list based >>on votes, but a list based on ability. > > Due to the demo tape idea. Jazz, you're making this more >complicated than it has to be. If you don't stop, I'm asking you to leave.

WHO ARE YOU to ask ME to abandon MY IdEA? Excuse ME, Sir Vincent, YOU are the one who needs to learn a few things about planning, and if you insist on making a mess of things, you are going to confuse people and make it hard to get any support for this in the future.

    >>Sixth, I coordinate nationwide (media) events professionally. I know what >>I'm doing. How old are you, and what is your experience that you feel you >>are running this whole thing? Do you have any idea of what I normally get >>PAID for this? For an event like this, I would charge, and get paid, about >>$800. Just for sitting at my computer doing what I'm doing now. > > Don't try to make yourself feel superior to me. I'm not pushing an >ego on you, but you seem to like to do that to me. If you want to be paid, >leave. This is non-profit.

My point is that I have a LOT of experience. I never said I wanted to be paid. If you're reading that into my statement then you need to start paying closer attention to what people write.

    > Then leave. Your dissent could end the whole tribute. You're >acting like a cancer. You are not necessary to the success of this. Hector >and the ytsejammer musicians are the only necessity.

This statement is absolutely ridiculous and further exemplifies your inexperience and naivety. Further, I AM a musician (among other things). YOUR dissent and insistence on leading people down a twisted and confused path is NOT going to get this tribute done.

What does it mean to you, Vince? Are you just trying to waive your dick in the air? I've seen your bloated .sig, so I can guess that your feelings of impotence must be running rampant right about now. From your past posts on the jam you seem to feel it's your place to stomp on others instead of a well-placed non-judgmental statement. Or do you WANT to be a team player, working WITH other people to pay homage to a band we all love? Are you acting in a Dream Theater spirit, or just trying to bully your way into a position you know nothing about?

    >>I hope that we can decide to work together: > > Not when you send a bitch-out statement like this. This coming just >after your immature jam posts. You are acting very immature and it needs to >end if you still want to be a part of this.

    1. saying I hope we can work together is bitchy? 2. I'M immature? Read your comments above and meditate on who is being immature. How old are you anyway?

    >>you will be on-site at Hector's >>studio supervising the recording going on there. You will have more on your >>hands than I think you realize. > > I've recorded before. I know what I'm getting into. Don't >patronize me. Are you even a musician?

Once again you have not been reading what I wrote. I have placed you as head of operations in Arizona. That entails much more than just recording your lines.

    >>Please send me your list of availabilities. As soon as the deadline is up, >>I'll try to get a list broken up by region. I hope/think by that time there >>will be five recording centers, and with the Power of Omen tape that should >>do it. > >THERE IS NO DEADLINE!!! WE HAVEN'T BEGUN SCREENING TAPES YET!!! >WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH?

There IS a deadline to volunteer, at which point we will begin accepting tapes. The heads of operation at the (now SIX) studios will be the ones who screen the tapes, trying to work people together into ensembles.

I might point out to you that with six studios one could easily be dropped from the list. You might reconsider your nasty opinion.

    >We need to keep this off the 'jam -- people are unsubscribing because of >>this. I promise to not leave you out. > > I promise to leave you out if you keep acting like this. You're a >cancer. Have you read all the jams that basically say to you to leave? >Read your jams please.

I have NOT seen any of the sort. Rather, I keep getting mail that says, "Vince is such an overbearing shit, he wants to screw this up, PLEASE try to regain control over it, you are knowledgeable and seem to have a good plan. PLEASE don't let Vince screw this up, we want a tribute album."

    > Peace be with you and God bless, ~Vince

May Satan eat your children if you ever send me this .sig again.
