It is advetised as a forum for DT fans, and this sort of crap happens
*all* the time? Our strength is ourselves? WHO do you think you are, some
sort of DT YtseJam Civil rights leader? Something should remain true to
form if it is going to be about anything. You don't start a bakery to talk
about cars, and you shouldn't subscribe to a DT/Music mailing that
*sometimes* talks about DT. I love Dream Theater. Have every legal album
that I could muster enough money to buy. They are a great band...but this
mailing..it is not a good thing right now.

I'm not leaving because you all suck, I'm leaving because people like you
won't admit that most of you all suck :)

Hi again,
I will be in Chicago 29th June-2nd July at least for an international
conference in relation with my work. So if you want good quality vox
(English mother-tongue) and/or bass contribution to a possible tribute by
an overseas jammer, I'd be glad to participate.
Just tell me in advance.
Cheers,

felicitous salutations
so now we know why the next Dream Theater album is taking so long. First off,
Mr. Portnoy said "let's make a new album". All the other guys agreed. Mr. Myung
then proposed doing his bass stuff first in a studio in Greenland. Mr. Petrucci
went to ask Mr. LaBrie if it was OK if he played some of the flashier guitar
parts over the top of the vocals (which were transferred from a DAT to a ZIP
drive). Mr. LaBrie then published a letter in Metal Hammer accusing Mr. Portnoy
of "sucking nadz" (TM) and stealing *his* idea of doing a new album im New
Mexico. At this point, two rival keyboarders who shall remain anonymous (one
of whom has cancer of the testicles) both started ripping into each other,
doubting the ability of the other to play carpaccios without getting their
respective click tracks on the tape too. Up pops another vocalist, claiming that
he has the dibs on the voice-over section to The Ytsejam. Mr. Myung then gets
all upset and declares that he wants no part in a project that is being ruled
by two dictators (or was that dick-tators?). This declaration causes the two
combatants Mr. Portnoy and Mr. LaBrie to momentarily join forces and kick seven
different colours of shit out of Mr. Myung, who wishes them peace and the
eternal smiles of Buddha...
(Resemblance to any figures living or dead is not coincidental but instead
unavoidable)
Anyway, why are some of you shitting yourself with fear just because some of
the members of Dream Theater (who they?) might be reading this? Worried that
they might find out what some of you are really like, I suppose.
Since the Yste-Jizz-And-Wince-Jam has become full of all this wonderful
stuff, I've become a firm supporter of the 'original' lyrics to "A Change Of
Seasons" as in the quote 'have MERCY, FUCK this tribute'.
Nuff said I think.
stay safe and happy listening (some of you do still listen to music, I hope)

OK, for those of you who will take the...I mean, for those of you who
will read my post (I always feel guilty skimming posts, but time is not
always available. I like to have everyone's voice heard in my head.
Yes, I hear voices [j/k]), this is about a dream I actually had last night.
The new DT album had been released!! I open the booklet inside and see a
song with the lyrics written by JM. He used the name Tamar LaYung
because that was the jammer nickname for him. He thanked specific
jammers by this song. The jammers who were thanked were those that were
Star Trek fans.
Strange dream - don't know where it came from.

I'm sorry if I missed this, but I've been skipping a lot of Jams
lately.
Does anyone know if Derek has made any lyrical contributions to songs
on the upcoming release?Has he written lyrics in the past for any
group?
Other notes: got my girlfriend to sit and watch O:Livecrime in its
entirety. She liked the story idea, but she doesn't like hard
rock/metal vocals.
Also, any one seen Nuno's new group in concert, yet? Lemme kno what
it was like 'cause he's gonna be at House of Blues here in Chicago on
March 22 and I think I wanna go. Thanks!

Message-ID: <330B2BA3.41F6@enter.net>
Wow...
I don't want to say what other people have already said, but I believe
the tribute idea is great, BUT there needs to be some type of
organization, structure and methods to madness.
I think the FIRST thing that needs to be done is that a committee of
five or so people be put together (and if Vince & Jazzmine are apart of
it, great).
This committee needs to COMMIT theselves to the project for the group
and not themselves. They need to take all suggestions given be the
jammers and decide what can be used and what can't be (even if this
means having everyone email their suggestions to the committee)----I
understand that the committee is doing this free and on their spare
time, and so all not on the comittee should understand this allow the
proper time for decisions to be made.
The committee needs to develop a plan of attack and lay out the plans to
the entire jam and state why. Here I would hope that the jammers would
try to understand that the committee has based decisions for the better
of the tribute and the jam.
------------------------------
And so on.... I hope you understand what I'm tyring to say about
creating a committee and what purpose it would serve. I am offering to
help all that I can... I'm use to do shit like this, so it's nothing
new; I hadn't said anything before, because I've been busy of late.
How many agree there should be a committee no less than 5 no more of 10,
to kick this project off. I think it's the only way this will work.

I think it was possibly Bafu that said a few months ago that we
would be able to purchase some Fix for 96 shirts through the official
web site. Last time I checked, there was nothing there.
Is this gonna happen?
Does anyone have a Fix for 96 shirt that they would like to sell?
I was unable to pick one up.
Does anyone have the John Mellencamp album "American Fool"? I need
to get a copy of Jack and Diane and I'd like to buy this CD off of
someone if it's just sitting around collecting dust. Or if you would
like to make a little Mellencamp "Greatest Hits" tape if you have
a few of his albums, I could trade you a DT boot tape for it or
something like that. Let me know!!! Thanks!!!

Ok, I've kept quiet long enough. :)
Most of us know who has done more REAL planning, so I won't say the name of the person with whom I side here.
The way I see it, this has become so out of hand that the only way to do it now is to do TWO tributes--one run by Jazz, the other by Vince--and we'll see whose comes out first, better, whatever.
The best way to see who does what song is the audition idea. We need to pick a list of 'jammers whose opinions are well-respected on the jam, we need some to musicians and some to be non-musicians, and we need them to be impartial, meaning not wanting to play on the tribute themselves. We need to pick the songs that will be on the tribute THEN have people audition for the song they want. Then we need to send tapes of these auditions to the judges. <And by audition, you can set up studio time, or record yourself in your room jamming along with your boom box--the performance will come through>.
Shit! I have to go to class.
Peace be with you and...oh, never mind. :P

well, in the tradition of i/w, which i neatly ripped open, i felt bad leaving out the other albums, so i guess for the next few days, i'll entertain at the very least myself and pose some aroused or awoken questions.............party on, and please add to the mix as needed.
october 11, 1994- i remember the day. "he new dt album's out". after my morning session of music history, my friend and i raced to our neighborhood coconuts at 11:45 am, and got our copies of awake. "my, what a nifty album cover......there's like pictures of the songs on the cover.....and who's the kojak lookalike........and my, petrucci and porn toy look so cute in those beards......they look like men."
so as i raced back to my dorm and threw it on, i had no clue what to expect.
1- awake that's the sickest sounding drums i've ever heard.........oh my.......what's with that guitar? or is that a keyboard?? wow........this sounds insane! i really like it......jeez. it sounds a LOT heavier already than images, but laid back...........and those samples....jeez. is this even dream theater???
to express the surprise i received when this song came on is almost beyond words.....it was SOOOOOOO unlike the dt i learned to love in images......james isn;t screaming (or not as much anyway), portnoy's just insane......you can really hear the bass. there's a keyboard solo- what the fuck?!?! did kevin become KEITH EMERSON for a week or something? images of kevin throwing a hammond b-3 were rising to the top of my cranium.
this song made such a great use of dynamics and emotions...it's just kicking....wow...fuck it. i'm done, cause i know all about the honor of god, vince....er...mary jane....;-)
2- caught in a web- this song makes me think about girls in short skirts, thigh highs and boots, part one.
some guy (or girl) PLEEEEEEEEEASE tell me they think of something remotely similar......when i say it's a sexy intro, i don't mean o-+>...........it's just like one of those "fucking songs".....it's weird......maybe i AM perverted....hmm....13 years of catholic school, i guess...
wow- james sounds pissed off here. man. i dig it..........and wow........i that a 7 string??? i think i'm going to come now......yep, it is.........
the chorus- ok, CHECK THIS OUT, folks.........the verses are mainly in a form of c sharp, right? right.....now there's this cool transition right before the chorus that takes us up to its relative major, g. what?!?!?!?!?!?! G?!?!?!?! yeah.........a tritone modulation into the chorus. i love prog rock, sometimes. so willing to take a dare. and that chorus...
living colour, anyone?
solo- i am NOT hearing portnoy playing 16th notes on the bass that long, am i? nah....man, these solos are just rockin.......these session players sure got tight in the span of a couple of years......i mean, everything is RIGHT ON THE MONEY. is this steely dan doing "aja"? what gives?
[my "did you know" for the day, for your drummers: did you know that steve gadd, the drummer on "aja" (the song), did that entire piece, a 7 page drum score, in TWO TAKES???]
my favorite moment of the song is in the last chorus, when they sing it the second time around, and myung alters the sound of th e flat chord on "web" in "caught in a web". the progression goes g to e flat, and myung rather slickly stays on g throughout that line. i know, i know, there's no reason that 6/3 chords should excite me scott daugherty, but fuck you, goon! hahahaha! i love 6/3. i GETT OFF to them. btw, scott, i was playing, but you know that, or you should.
3- innocence faded-
now, i still don't like "surrounded", but i always loved this song, the one song that it seems not a lot of fans dig. note the queensrychean intro....(is this "eyes of a stranger"?). what i love is in the beginning how it goes from a 4 groove into that rushed thing, where it changes meters (4 to 457983475 to mars)........
wow....cool silent part........note the rychean vocal entry......note the rychean guitar texture, the rychean drums (fast hi hats, and some snares)........the rychean bass.......and then it goes even SOFTER.........("o ne as if time..."), and then that keys line into the chorus.....yeah, i like this song a lot. the rychean vocal harmonies. but no chris degarmo guitar solo to make me fall off my chair.....he just keeps singing and singing and singing.......
ok, now that first i start not to like on the album lies in this song, the one i like a lot, no less....they had such a great feel with the ryche tribute, and then it gets blown away by a black sabbath meets winger end section. WHY?!?!?!?!?! is this why some of you hate this song? i get musical blue balls listening to this......it's like innocence faded became another song. and then it just ends. arghhhh.
i hate semi-through composed music. composers in the house, if you're going to write music, either keep the repitions constant, or keep the new parts constant. don't start out writing verse chorus verse, and then "symptoms of the she's only 17 universe". you risk leaving your listeners with less to hold onto, less to enjoy. just my thoughts.
ok, enough for now. chew and digest, and if you're brave enough spit or swallow it out. whatever..........PLEASE- opinions are nice. thoughts are too.

Well, I missed one jam since I downloaded it from my mailbox, and now I'm at work... so I'll see if there's anything valuable there... but I just wanted to say:
I really enjoyed the last Ytsejam Digest. There was no DT content except to clear up the rumor that they have been slated to record. I really got that sense of pride when some of the good ol' jammers came out of the woodwork and helped quell the recent stupidity. Vince, good of you to apologize. I know firsthand how easy it is to fly off the handle (though I'd like to believe I've stopped doing that)...
Petition Update: I'll be revamping the actual petition page today, to give it the theme of the Black/Pink/White Picasso guitar from the I&W tour. I thought that would be cool, since the main page is done as the Red/Green/Yellow/ etc JP guitar. The petition has over 1300 legitimate (non duplicate) signatures, and it's only been about a week (A week tonight at 9 or so). That sounds like a great response ratio to me. I'm very proud of all the work that's gone into it... from the planning that the committee did, to the design, right down to the effort you folks have put in, getting over to the page and signing. We have received little information about the ACoS petition, but have heard that there was something along the lines of only 400 signatures on that petition.
To those of you who wanted to write in a petition in ink, through snail mail for impact, we should have info VERY soon on where to send those letters. Any comments or questions are welcome to someone@prognosis.com.
Thanks a lot!

Hey!
I've been lurking for about a month (I was on the jam about 2 years ago, but didn't post much) and now I've something to say...well...ask. I just picked up the "Live in Tokyo" video at a local Best Buy for $15 (is this a good price?) and was wondering if this video is typical a DT show? I've never seen them live (when I was living up in Sacramento, the place that they were going to play caught fire).
The tribute thing: I'm no musician, but I can drive a couple of people from Southern California to Arizona or wherever this thing is going to be.

I personally don't find this offensive, but alot of people would prefer that you use little stars to call attention to your profanity. For example "Perkele would become P*rk*l*. That way people who don't know that a word is bad can be warned of its existence and not have to read it.

Speaking for myself, the fact that we don't talk about Dream Theater all the time is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much. Being a DT fan, I am already more than familiar with DT, and in this off season, there isn't much to cover that hasn't already been covered. The reason we're all here is because we share a common bond, and yet we're immensely diverse, and I love that. Imagine if all 1200(well, probably less now that 500 decided the rest of us can't admit that we suck.) of us decided that we were going to start a DT commune up in the mountains somewhere. We wouldn't only talk about the band for five years. I know that's a stupid analogy but my point is that this list is about more than DT and their music, as unbelieveably great as those things are. It's about us. The fans. This is our list, and believe it or not, we are all more than just DT fanatics, so what's wrong with sharing that with our friends here? Those of us who haven't packed our bags and stormed out the proverbial door at the first sign of a disagreement or fight have come to understand that, as D-Man obviously has. And so, if this list means so little to you that the rough spots aren't worth waiting out, then by all means leave, and maybe that means I suck, but I honestly don't care.
Eric
