My sincere apologies for my last post... I shouldn't have said the things
I said, or at least not the way I said them. It was just something I had
to get off my chest. I think I did it quite effectively, though :-)

Interesting take... I think that the end of IF is the best part of the song..
Black Sabbath meets Winger?!?! I see it as: Steve Morse gathers up the
Dregs, injects a shitload of adrenaline and various "speed" drugs into every
player, and lets loose for 2 minutes or so.. This ending KICKS ASS.

Well, I finally received my copy of Carpe Diem within the last week. I
would have to disagree with the person who said the cd sucked. It is a
good audience boot, not as good as a Mike Bahr production. The photos in
the book are great as well. this boot actually has Dream Theater on the
booklet and the cd...
Was it worth the long wait? I would say yes.

Not to be anal about it or anything, but I sat in on an interview
with JLB (I think this may have been mentioned a WHILE ago, too)
and he made it clear to mention the fact that he doesn't
"scream" (he seemed kinda perturbed at the word scream). He
said it was more of a "controlled chaos" achieved through
a combination of properlung and vocal cord usage to produce
the "effect" as if he were screaming.
This is not bullshit either. He spent a large amount of time
explaining with respect to the time he answered other questions.
It seems like he wanted to make that point clear....

Everyone's just an asshole these days, eh? Ah well...I've been slaving lately, as is per usual, so I haven't really commented much lately. So I will...
>From: Mark Bredius <bredius@globalxs.nl> > >Ever stopped to think that *some* might actually like Chuckie's voice ? >I've been a fan since day ONE, and frankly, I thought he was a *great* >singer at the time. I can't deny LaBrie is the better singer in more >ways than one, but that doesn't mean "Charlie Dominici sucked". >"You are being a *prick*"
A common comment among my friends after the release of "Images and Words" was that they liked the band more before they got "another Hollywood-type singer." This notion seems to have changed a little over the last few years, but I still think Charlie was a fine singer, the "Billy Joel singing Queensryche" criticism notwithstanding.
>Oh yeah, "Brave" is considered to be a MASTERPIECE (no, NOT just by ME). >Every year, a Dutch radio station does a "Best albums of all time" poll. >Here's the top 10 of last year's poll :
That's interesting, as I'm still not particularly fond of "Brave" in the context of Marillion's work, thought it certainly IS a great album....and you point out something else odd about my musical tastes with the list...
>> 2. Marillion - Brave <--- >> 9. Marillion - Misplaced childhood <--- Another legendary album
Anyhow, here it is: I think the two best Marillion albums are "Clutching At Straws" and "Holidays In Eden." I ALMOST know what the hell I'm talking about, eh? Oh well....Rush is my favorite band and I STILL say "Hold Your Fire" is their best effort.
>You know, the thing I hate the most about this list is the fact that >there are *so* many close-minded idiots on it. According to *them*, >an album or band either "sucks" or "rulez". Grow a fucking brain ! >I don't like to sound like an asshole (and I'm sure I do), but that >seems to be the only way to get through to some people.
I suppose. That kind of diction seems to be the way to express opinions on the list. I don't think too many people here are saying "Oh shit, Cairo blows chunks....I can't get that record. I'll go and get the Superior CD, since it rocks nadz." You try to get a consensus...figure out who likes what. I mean, asking me whether you should buy Malevolent Creation or Cannibal Corpse first is pointless -- I'm not an expert on that kind of music. What Miles Davis to start with...that's something I can help you with. Ah well, you probably already have that figured out, I'm just contemplating my naval.

Wow, I missed last weeks YTSEJAMS. So I'm catching up on 15 jams or so and what do I see? Have we have turned into a pack of wild dogs overnight? We ALL care alot about DT and this record company hold out is putting alot of stress on us ! We are trying to come up with ways to keep us occupied during this void and we are fighting over every little scrap of DT material that we can get our hands on. Man,......we have GOT to mellow out here!

Well, in this case, it is true that they got out of their contract (WILLFULLY...they had been wanting out for a long time). Anyways, this happens to be true because a friend of mine knows Charlie Benante and talks to him. Anyways, they're still shopping around for a label. Well, until next time....

I don't know about you but when I talk about thrash I'm talking about bands like Slayer, Exodus, old Megadeth, old Metallica, old Sepultura etc. Obviously Metallica is still successful, but even those people who like load have to admit it's not thrash like Kill 'em All. Anthrax's last record was a bomb, and I don't recall Sacred Reich ever being large. Pantera is sort of thrashy, but not like Slayer or anything. And I've never heard of White Zombie, Ozzy, or COC as being thrash...

Wutsup Posse,
Ok, by now you're probably sick of hearing tribute shit on the jam and don't really even read it (the jam that is), but god dammit, read this. :)
For anybody on the jam looking for great prog-metal and is sick of waiting for the new DT, you must get Behind by Superior. This disc is amazing, a 10 out of 10 right up there with I&W and Awake. These guys have their own sound, like DT, but they're definitely not "clones" as some people have accused these type bands of being. The guitar riffs are killer, probably in general a heavier type feeling than most DT, think PMU type riffs. More piano than keyboard, wonderfully contrasted with the heavy riffs. Most of the time the guitars won't play really complex voicings like JP does sometimes, but the piano stuff more than makes up for it if you start to get bored. Again, these riffs kick you in the ass, this is heavy stuff, but of course it wouldn't be prog-metal if there wasn't a piano song and a ballad (which there is). I've saved the best for last, the vocals....oooh this guy is spine-tingling. He's got all the bases covered, soft, loud, screaming, the range is there, the dynamics are there, and most amazingly is he seems to switch tones, almost sounding like a different guy at times, it's scary. Oh, and Bernd, if you're reading this, you guys are great, keep up the good work and I'm sure if you keep at it you'll get your break one day.
The best thing about the jam is learning of new music. Hell, that's why we're all here isn't it? I believe it says somewhere on the introduction letter that this is about DT and DT type music, so let me just say that I have discovered some of the best music I've ever heard and most of my current favorite bands thanks to this list. Besides Superior, I suggest you all go out and buy Shadow Gallery and Lemur Voice immediately. These are both excellent CD's and again, they are not DT clones, but there is DT influnce in the music. The only negative comments I've heard about these discs is that SG's backround vocals can be "cheesy" and LV's vocalist is hard to understand. So unless you're nitpicky, it's hard to go wrong with these discs.

You won't believe me if I tell ya, but I'll write it down here anyhoo.
In the middle of my 3 hour long color studio, while I was painting away to the thrashy tunes of Awake, a herd of flying caribou tromped into the room, pulling a sled with James inside. Apparently, he wanted to have a quick jab session with yours truly, so we went to someplace where we were sure that nobody would know of Dream Theater and intrude on our conversation: a Sam Goody outlet in south Central LA.
To my shigrin, THE WHOLE BAND was there!
James: Heya Eckster...we were reading the ytsejam of late, and we're sorry 'bout the (going into a "controlled chaotic" A) deLAAAAAAAAYs!
Me: Hey, it ain't my fault if EastWest gets mail bombed, 'cuz I won't be the one doin' it!
JP: But we were reading about the tribute album that you guys wanted to start up...
Portnoy: ...and figured, we need a tribute to our fans!
Me: But...we don't have any songs for you to cover...
JP: ...Nobody knows, the trouble I've seen.
Myung smiles.
Portnoy: Fuck yeah, man! We figgured that you guyz put up with enough of this management shit, so we're gonna put out another album by ourselves, "Tribute, to our Fans".
James: Yeah, but we have to work on that title. It sounds too GAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
Me: Cool beans! Who's idea was this?
JP: Well, somebody came up with it, and I just thought we'd put it into action.
Derek: Hey man, it was my idea!
JP: Hey, we're all in this together, right?
Derek: Don't get cocky with me guitar boy!
Me: It's his duty to get cocky. He's a guitarist! He's cocky by nature!
Myung sneezes.
Me: God bless you.
Portnoy: Hey, you're gonna offend somebody with that comment...(he picks up his drum sticks and starts wielding them around like nun-chucks)
James: Well somebody has to organize this!
Derek: I have the experience, the talent, and the drive to do this, man! I should do it!
Me: ...you're the only member here who hasn't put out a full album with this band....
Derek: And who are you to speak? Oh lowly practicing guitar pion? Don't you know by now, keyboardists are superior to all?
JP: Who's the one who has the studio?
They all raise thier hands.
Portnoy: Fuck. We're never gonna get any album done.
James: This really SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUX (low G). And it's the singer who has supreme power above all musicians!
Portnoy: Who's keeping the fuckin' beat, huh? I'd like you to do that triple bass part for Lie2, see how fuckin' long you last!
JP: I didn't say anything about guitarists being supreme...so I won't stoop to your level and start bickering about this whole thing!
Myung tries to speak, but a black cat suddenly falls from the roof and, trying to find something to grab onto to avoid plummeting to the graffiti-stained ground, claws out his tongue.
Me: Shit. We're doomed. We're so progressive, we have to think too much to produce an album. That's our problem! We think too much! Peace, love, and Pez man!!! Take me back to Tempe! I must share the good news!
James: Good news? We're all about to kill each other! The band's on the verge of killing themselves, and you have good news from all of this?!
I then pulled out the official DT gear from the trunk of the sleigh and told them to play. I then heard the heaviest fuckin' song known to man...and the most aggressively complex too.
Then my alarm clock woke me up at 7:40.
