    Hey Jammerz,

everyone is now complaining 'bout vince and jazz, and I don't like them
very much either. (BTW, since the first time I saw vince's .sig, I
woundered what kinda guy would still wish this to other people, but
anyway). I must say I had a pretty much fun reading them flaming each
other; at least SOMETHING interesting is going on on je jam right now.

One thing that really surprised me is that everybody is so concerned
about not 'offending' each other. I mean racism/seksism etc might be
offending, but not the words godd bless?? Or is this just some typical
Amrican habbit (not offending all american jammers of course...)

I also woundered why the hell everybody wants the credits for

    - proposing the idea for a tribute album
    - organising the tribute album.

What's so really special about that, Elektra released REAL albums from
Dream Theater, they don't seem to be honoured that much on the jam...? I
think that only those who are able to play some of those impressive
DT-songs (in fact just any song from DT) deserves a bit of a compliment.

    Well, in other news...
Some people here on the jam might like Steve DiGiorgio's bass playing.
Well, I saw the name Death sometimes on the jam. His original band Sadus
is even more amazing. DiGiorgio is recognisable out of thousands, with
his freaky, fast fretless bass lines.
Sadus is recording a new album right now. DiGiorgio also started a new
project, which is only jazz/fusion/funk orientated. It's leageus away
from metal, as he describes it.
Anybody interested could email him at darkhall@aol.com

Last night's Steve Morse Band performance was predictably amazing...

First - opening band "The Recruits." Terrible, terrible, terrible... You
don't hire a 3rd rate "poppy" band that sounded like they should be playing
background music during the TV show "Friends", with rather untalented
musicians, to open for the SMB.

Then - Steve and Company. Well, I knew Dave LaRue was an amazing bassist but
WOW!!!! I stood 3 feet from the man for the whole show and, as a guitarist,
it amazes me that my eyes were fighting to leave his fretwork to check out
Steve's - AMAZING!! The song list emphasized Steve's recent album Stressfest,
including the blazing title track. He played a classical duet with LaRue, and
also the bluegrass fusion tune "Smokey Mtn. Drive".. Old dregs classics were
not left out, including Cruise Control.. Steve also played "Tumeni Notes" and
"Highland Wedding" from the much-acclaimed (by me and some other jammers) High
    Tension Wires album.

He was a class act all the way, fielding the anooying comments of a couple
drunken morons with humor and wittiness. One exchange went something like
    this:

Steve: Well, this next song is about a strange experience.. It's like when
you have had a little too much of... *something*... and you're in that state
    where you're just about to...

    Drunken Moron: Cum!

Steve(laughing): No, I think that would be a faster, more uptempo song.. (the
    song was Dreamland)

Also, some people were yelling "Smoke on the Water" so he said he's play it if
someone could come up and sing it with the same range and conviction as Ian
Gillan (sp?).. I thought that was funny.

Van Romaine played a pretty cool drum solo also, and was tearing up the
skins... I think he broke two sticks (one during Tumeni Notes)..

    Summary: GO SEE STEVE MORSE.

            Very good news for everyone.

Well, as most of you know, after the Tori and Metallica print run
problems I had last fall, I had cut (as a cautionary measure) the print
runs of the two Dream Theater CDs, "Precious Things" and "Darkest of
Winters" to 250 apiece. I now have a new blanks supplier, a nice new
contract for bulk purchasing that actually ensures that I'll start getting
my damned blank orders on TIME, and the business with Equinox is cookin'
so well that I have a *little* bit more time on my hands these days.

Therefore, I'm going ahead and bumping the print runs up by 100.
Now realize that this is all OK with my reprint policy because I had
originally announced these discs as 500-prints, and 350 is still pretty
rare by that scale. It's entirely possible I'll be able to press all 500
of each, but for now, I'm just going with what I know I _can_ do, and
we'll let the rest play itself out by and by.

SO, if you're on the waiting list for Precious Things or The
Darkest of Winters, since both lists only currently tally around 60
people, go ahead and send your order along and consider your original
reservation request *confirmed*. And, it does follow, that if you're
interested in one of these two masterpieces (smile) and haven't told me
yet, now is probably a good time. :)

Oh, just a day-by-day for y'all. I'm having the usual bad luck
closing out the final few Wrath shipments, but that will be taken care of
pretty soon. There are Precious Things discs rolling out of the burner and
ready to go... when the liner printing is done, which should be soon, and
I get the mail with George Fan's CD art, which should also be soon, so I
can put it onto the discs themselves. Things are lookin' good.

Saw Empire Strikes Back today... yee-hah. Best of the three. This
whole trilogy re-release has just been ever so much fun.

To those wondering, I've never heard of anyone having trouble
getting CDs from Jim Colberg before. He's totally reputable, as far as I
know. I wouldn't sweat it... keep trying to get in touch with him if
you're still waiting for a CD, and I imagine he'll get it out to you.

Yeah, is there going to be another ytsejam-list shirt run this year,
not just the ones for the 'Cons, but the "official" one? I have to
stock up for summer... (want to get some more tank-tops, black tees
are a bit much in the summer in CA, even at the higher altitudes).
I think I still have the _first-run_ one somewhere, but the black has
faded so much it almost looks gray.

And, a friend of mine happend by the laundromat last week while I was
there (doing laundry, of course), and she was like, "Why do all of your
clothes seem to have some kind of Dream Theater thing on them?"

Also, an Indian (engineering manager here at work saw the back of one
of the shirts I was wearing and he said,"Wow, that's some fraternity!"
I just smiled and nodded in accord. I didn't even try to explain it.

Hey, it's not just a band, it's a way of life!

Beside the obvious misspellings, I have some questions of the wise-ass variety.

How does a fabric take me in? Oh, SATAN! (Unintended Mercyful Fate reference.)

Is a mating habbit anything like a mating Hobbit? "What have I got in
    my pocket?" indeed.

    Fucking dangling prepostions.

    Anyway....

I went to Best Buy tonight and what did I see? First of all I saw My Dying Bride
"angel and the black river" or whatever the hell it's called, but it had a bonus
live cd. Pisses me off when labels do stuff like that. You buy the release and
then they go and re-release it later with bonus tracks. Grr...

Then I saw (and bought) the Helstar re-releases(without any bonus tracks, as
    far
as I can tell.) I have heard so much good about Nosferatu and A Distant Thunder
that they had better be good. This means you Carlo!

Then I bought the latest Yngwie product. Why? I don't know. For some reason I
own all of his cds. This is the Richie Blackmore tribute album, from what I
can see. Speaking of which, he is playing around here tomorrow night. I can't
take the (oh, Blackmore is playing, not Yngwie) smoke, though. Does that bother
anyone else? I hate going to clubs and having to breathe smokestack-quality air
for five or six hours. It makes me sick.
    GO WINGS!

    Howdy Jammerz -

Well, it's certainly a pleasant surprise to find that there are other
fans of Amorphis out there! Knowing this, I can feel confident that my words
of praise shall not fall upon deaf ears! "Elegy", IMHO, is an absolute
musical masterpiece. It's a damn shame that they felt the need to
contaminate it with the occasional death metal growling vocals. Don't get me
wrong, I think that growling has its place in music... if it's the RIGHT type
of music. Fast, aggressive, and brutal music should have fast, aggressive,
and brutal vocals. The music on "Elegy" just doesn't warrant that type of
vocal delivery. Beautifully woven tapestries of progressive melodic metal
should be graced with similar vocals. When Amorphis's second "clean" singer
is doing his thing, the music is just perfect. I highly recommend this album
to anyone. (To those in the know, isn't the title track one of the best
tunes you've heard in a long while? %-) ) The only black mark on this
recording, as far as I can tell, is the gutteral vocal delivery half of the
time. I doubt if I'll ever "enjoy" the death metal vocs on the album, but
the music is just so DAMN amazing and catchy, I'll "tolerate" the growls. Oh
yeah, and "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" is pretty great, as well. Keep
those fingerz and toez crossed for a new DT album before we die....

                                           Yours lovingly,
                                                                     Matt T.

    Hi all,

I met Charlie Bauerfeind last night. He is the guy that has mixed the upcoming Angra live EP. He said that it is all finished and the record company has it now. It is entitled "Holy Live" and will have four songs that total 35 minutes. He said they couldn't do a full live CD because Angra had only recorded one show in Paris and the sound of the hall wasn't all that good. But Charlie said that in teh end the songs turned out ok.

I am not sure when this is going to come out. But hopefully I will have a tape of it next week *grin*.

While driving through Hamburg, Germany last night with my friend I saw quite a sight. It seems that East/West has an office right here. So what should I do? Should I go in there with a DT t-shirt and such and start yelling at them in English? Or should I restrain myself and not do anything?

I think it would be cool just to go in and see what they tell me. Any ideas?

    Jason

    Hiya fellow Ytsepineapples!!

Well, Monday, February 24, 2997 is Sue's birthday.

I was wondering if those of you who know her from IRC's #ytsejam might want to take a moment and send her a little birthday wish via e-mail? What I'm after is a sort of positive e-mail flood that'll take her a while to clean up. 8-) Nothing in the area of several thousand copies of a post though please!! I have to use the account too!!=20 Anyway, we will be going to the Metallica show in Hamilton, Ontario (about 40 miles west of Toronto) and she's already PUMPED for that. This would be the Ytseicing on the cake if you could do this.

    THANKS!!

    One other thing......

Without dwelling on this in specific detail by qutoing examples, I would like to request that people stop and THINK about what they are posting. This request comes in light of all of the flames that have been thrown around here in the last couple weeks. Before you post a flame to someone, ask yourself, "How would this person feel/react if I said this too him/her face to face?". If the answer is that they would kill/fillet/mame/bludgeon/torture/hang/abacinate you, and you don't have the guts to say it to his/her face, then SHUT UP!

It would appear that people, not all of you but a great many, have forgotten the purpose for this list. This list was started to talk about DT and a host of other ideas. Disagreements and arguments are a part of our nature as the irrational species we are, but things are way out of hand here. If you can't discuss things in a civil manner, don't respond; not even in private e-mail. There is NO excuse for the kind of arrogance and rudeness that has been displayed in recent weeks. =09 A great many of you need to develop thicker skin and a sense of humility. I've been on the list for over 2 years now and I've never seen such antagonism as I've seen in the last couple months. =09 There are many situations which you will face in your adult life that are not as malleable as you would have them be. They will require courage, intelligence and determination to work through. Some of these tribulations will find resolution in a manner pleasing to you while many will not. If you are to retain your sanity, you have to learn how to deal with disagreements and personal stress without launching attacks on your peers. It is far easier to be cruel and spiteful here where there is no physical danger. This kind of attitude, in the REAL WORLD, just might help you to eat a bullet. =09 Where is all of this coming from? What is my pent up Fountain of Frustration? The tribute. This is a project, like this mailing list, that should be used as a force to unite us and bring us closer together. Instead, egos and arrogance have come into play to drive groups into camps. This is sickening. Can you imagine what the band must think of the way you are portraying yourselves? Is the best cross section of humanity that the band can attract to represent them as a fan base? I should hope not. It is important to note that I am not directing this at all who have spoken about the tribute. Many of you have been tactful in disagreement, responding appropriately to those things you take issue with. However, the "flameslinging" by several others has made this place an eye sore lately. You know who you are. Do the right thing. STOP IT! You are not children. Does someone have to step in and slap you on the butt to get you to behave? If this whole tribute thing cannot be attempted in a spirit of harmony, then it should be canned. It's that simple. The same goes for the list. Be funny, be irritated, be =46URIOUS!!!! But........ be CIVIL! It isn't hard. Just use your head. It takes just as much energy to be kind to someone as it does to hurt them but they'll only thank you for being kind. I'm not trying to moderate this list. I don't think any of us want to start seeing text edited as though it were some sort of Cold War KGB controlled Reader's Digest. At the same time, however, I do think that people need to step back and take a deep breath. Have fun here people!!! With all of the stress that life has to offer, don't turn this list into another harbinger of unrest.

Take care and have a good weekend.

    Cheers,

    Rick Toronto
