I'm now going to comment on the current run of Ytsejam shirts, one
of which I've had for months. Let me start by saying that my shirt has been
washed probably 50 or so times, and has not fated. The YtseJam graphincs
have not faded or cracked. Most importantly, THE SHIRT HAS *NOT SHRUNK*!
This is the first band related shirt I've bought that hasn't shrunk. :) I
have never seen a YtseCon shirt.

And finally a comment about shirt sizes: I am a tall dude, so I
ordered an XXL shirt. I wont say this was overkill, but the shirt is bigger
than I needed. I also ordered my GF an XL, because frankly, I had every
belief that these things would shrink. I have since borrowed her shirt when
I've needed a shirt (i.e. spilled something on the shirt I was wearing,
etc...) and it fits perfectly as well. If you are not massively overweight,
and aren't 6'6" the XL should be perfect for you. The shirt is made more
sturdy than most T's and the material is a bit heavier than most T's. It's
great quality and it's a GREAT price.
Don't you want to experience the Dream Theater fans at the next
concert staring at your shirt and sayingto each other "Wow! These are the
guys that helped get ACoS out!" The graphic is pretty damn cool too. :)
I'm telling you, it's gonna be great, because at the Dream Theater shows, if
Portnoy and the gang see you wearing one of those shirts, they're gonna play
their best, knowing they're gonna be reviewed in the next jam. :) Plus you
get to scare them, cuz they know we're all a bunch of YtseStalkers.
I don't know Pat really.... only talked to him a little bit. But
the shirts are for real, there is no scam, you will get your order somewhat
quickly, and you won't be disappointed. He bent over backwards to make us
these shirts. Buy yours, and help him get out of debt for helping us out.
It's well worth your money.

I LOVE Piccolo snares! I LOVE drums that sound like drums, instead of
snares and toms that sound like thunder and cymbals that sound like high
pitched gongs (tho china cymbals are great). I am no drummer, just a
listener. But I'd say that makes my opinion in the matter possibly more
valuable to you drummers than another drummer's opinion. Perhaps when you
choose to play drums that part of your brain that likes piccolo snares and
natural drum sounds falls out your ear? (J/K)

IMF is working on a page, so when that gets up, there will be info on Harris' band SURGEON as well... (a mighty fine metal band!) On another note, I found the Artension CD that I kept hearing about on the 'Jam a while back... (I'd give credit to whoever it was that raised my attention to this band, but I can't remember -sorry! :) ) Excellent musicianship! I wasn't fond of the vocalist at first, he sounds like the guy from Foreigner - whos vocalist bugs me - but its growing on me... I found it behind some CD's at a Blockbuster Music... it was highway robbery at 16.99... but where else am i gonna find it?! I was pleased to see the band is with Shrapnel Records(Mike Varney)... I can always count on Shrapnel to filter out to only excellent musicians..! The band's lyrics sound a little goofy sometimes... but if they keep writing, I think this band will rule! (That's not to say they already don't... :) )

So there I was, cruising up I-87 in beautiful upstate New York just the other day with my lovely wife when a song came on the radio that struck me just the right way, and I wanted to share my experience with you all. Being a classic rock fan as well as prog, I cranked the radio when I heard REO Speedwagon's "Roll With Changes". As I listened to the song for the millionth time, I suddenly saw it in a new light. The more I thought about it, the more I dismissed the notion that I was crazy - the song would be perfect for Dream Theater to cover! (Still clinging to hope for an "Uncovered Part II"!) The tune's got it all: Guitar Solos, Keyboard solos, great drum fills... hell, it's just an overall great song. After hearing what an amazing job the band did with "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", I bet the boys could pull off "Roll With the Changes" without a hitch. Well, there's my random thought of the day. If there is an "Uncovered II", let's hope they bring back the ones they dropped from the set of "Uncovered I": Judas Priest's "Bloodstone", Deep Purple's "Child In Time", and Iron Maiden's "Phantom Of the Opera" were the three that I heard wound up on the cutting room floor. You've just said what the guy who didn't like mike's sound must know. This is an interesting subject, and I have a few things to say about it as a drummer and a great MP fan. First of all, Mike did not use a 6 1/2 " deep snare in IAW, (he actually used a 5 1/2", which is NOT considered as a Piccolo snare drum yet ) but it does sound like a deep snare actually because of the triggers the producers forced him to play with. In a Modern Drummer magazine (I think Sept' 93), there's an exclusive interview with MP by Matt Peiken, and they discuss the subject of the snare sound. Mike said he usually played a lot of ghost notes in all IAW songs, but by the time he recorded them, the producers didn't like his sound and they decided to trigger the snare in order to make the record more "listenable". The electronic system wasn't that sensitive, so every ghost note Mike played was lost (you actually CAN hear the difference between the snare sound in IAW and LATM for example, in whcich as a live performance, wasn't recorded with triggers). Then, in AWAKE, the band was already famous, so the producers didn't care whereas the snare sound would affect the record sales. What I must say is that those Mapex drums do sound great in Awake, and most of all, when ACOS was recorded, Mike was still using Mapex Drums, so don't blame Starclassic for the snare sound in ACOS. They're both great companies, the fact is that the snare mixing equalization in ACOS is not the usual heavy metal eq., but is rather more jazz-funk oriented, just like the whole song. I think MP does that on purpose, as he's an innovative drummer, he loves to keep trying new sounds and equipment to his drumming. Another thing is that he used to play with an uncoated top drumhead, which also is not too sensitive and does not catch up with every ghost stroke; but now he plays with a coated head, which also contributes to the change in his sound. Anyway, he's still using a 5 1/2" maple snare, so let's wait for his new Tama sound to fit in with the music as great as the Mapex one in ACOS!
