In my opinion, one of the reasons why Portnoy used a piccolo snare on ACOS was to make the snare blend better with his AAX stage hats. They are thin, very high pitched, and need a high pitched snare to complement them. If you notice, in IAW, Portnoy's snare sounded a lot fatter than it does now, even live (I saw them live about 2 months ago, and he wasn't using a piccolo). In Awake, his snare sound got higher pitched (he wasn't using a piccolo there, just a really tight snare head). Finally, he decides to record ACOS with a piccolo...I think it suits him and his style much better. Many of my friends don't feel this way, in fact, they hate his snare. Any drummer would know though...with his ghost notes, high hats, and his high toms, only a piccolo would be the best choice.

Weird. I found the single for Lie in a local record store, but had to
special order the Silent Man CD.

I know I've said it before, but this was the biggest turnoff for me
of ACoS. Everything was kewlness when I first bought it until I
heard that snare. Trust me, I didn't listen for it. It leapt out at
me, penetrated my consciousness and worked it's Chinese Water Torture
for the rest of the song. It took me a couple of listens to phase it
out, but I still don't listen to the song all that often because of
it. The rest of the drums sounded tip-top, though. (Big IMO, here.)

I hate you all forever, too, cuz I never noticed the sample snare
attacks in I&W till y'all pointed it out here. Now that's started
buggin me, too. Guess I'll have to hit Awake full throttle now (I
know drums are hard to mix, but I'm real picky about them.)

I say Mike needs to practice on the throne a little more. I can get
the perfect tones out of it. I think I'll go invent a porcelain
    drumset. :)

    Laterz!

The latest update of Dream Theater has me concerned. Concerned about the
fact JP is writing all the lyrics. Of couse I know he hasn't written all of
them, but in my opinion too many. I'm a huge Kevin fan and have always felt
his lyrical contributions will be thorn that plagues the band. Undeniably JP
is a great lyricist (as was Kevin) but where are the big contributions from
JM or even more from JL. Part of the magic of Dream Theater is instropection
into five guys both musically and lyrically. We are severly losing that with
the bulk of the lyrics JP has written. I'm just curious as to other people's
    reactions. Take the time.

A friend of mine loaned me two of his CDs this weekend, and I thought I'd put my $0.02 in about them....

TON - October Rust - oh, no not TON again.....I figured I'd give it a listen.....now remember, this is only my opinion. The music was decent - nothing spectacular or "in-your-face" like I enjoy, but it was nice - "ethereal"-esque even.... The vocals however, I couldn't take....I just don't like his voiace at all.......and that damn rolling of the "r"'s my God, that's the most annoying thing I have heard in a long time to me....I'm sorry, but I just couldn't endure it - it was like listening to a vampire singing......maybe that's the effect, but I just couldn't take it. The song, "In Praise of Bacchus" was cool, but in general, I didn't like it...

Marillion - Six of One, Half Dozen of the Other - This was a really good disc - I understand that it was half Fish, and half the other guy (sorry, I don't know Marillion that well). I don't which were which, but this was a good CD - again, it was kinda on the mellow side....but it is one that I would consider buying......

    Couple of quick comments:

1.) There's a band out there named "Ben Folds Five" - a piano guy (pianist, that is), a bassist, and a drummer. They're young (in their twenties), and their sound is very upbeat and Billy Joel-ish. If you enjoy older Billy, this is definitely a disc to get - it's way kewl....

2.) Bloom County! Excellent!! Deathtongue rules!!!! "Let's Run Over Lionel Richie With a Tank"! I loved that song!!! :P

3.) Don't forget to buy "Private Parts - the soundtrack". It goes on sale Tuesday......LLCoolJ and Chili Peppers, Type O and Ozzy, Rob Zombie and Howard Stern, Porno for Pyros w/ Dave Navarro, Marilyn Manson, clips from the movie, and the BEN STERN MEGA-MIX!!!!!!!

Wow. That's probably the biggest press (in the U.S., anyway) that a Magna Carta band has received. Pretty cool. Although I certainly think that Marcel and Barend deserve some ink as well. Marcel is a great soloist, and Barend Tromp gets that slinky fretless thing going (or is it a Stick?) and just sends chills up my spine...

Anyone looking to dump their Altura? I've seen various complainings here, and I'm looking to check it out.

In the truth, even though the Fresno (Calif.) area has a pop of ~500K, the CD retailers suck; the carry the popular, not the excellent. I look in the used CD bins first, the selection is better. In fact, that 's where I found SG's Carved in Stone; you'd never find a trace of it in the new CD's. As for finding the Lie CD single at a local store, it must have been a fluke. Hey all, Someone mentioned some while ago about Anthrax leaving Electra and maybe going back to the indies, maybe Metal Blade. That's not such a bad thing, all of their albums save the last 2 were on Megaforce, which if I remember correctly is an indie. I remember seein' 'em get pretty popular back in those days. Also, wouldn't it be great to see DT leave Electra and join Metal Blade? Electra seems to not want DT to record, but Metal Blade IS a metal label, no? DT would surely be welcomed there, I would think. I may be wrong here, but aren't the Galactic Cowboys and Lemur Voice on Metal Blade records? It wouldn't be such a bad thing to see DT and Anthrax on that label too. Jus' my 2 cents.

Jammers, Just picked up a used CD at SoundWaves last night. The group is called Heir Apparent and the CD is titled "One Small Voice". It's on the Metal Blade label and was put out in '89. Not too bad. Sorta progressive in parts. Some cheesy lyrics, some notso cheesy, but pretty decent musicianship. They do a pretty cool late 80's-up (Is that a word) version of Paul Simon's "Sound of Silence". Anyway, anyone heard of these guys before? Are there other CDs by them that I should pick up if I sorta dug "One Small Voice"? Thanks for the info...
