    February 27, 1997:
    Complete Dream Theater Song List
Here is a complete list of all the new songs being chosen for the
    upcoming album.
    Keep several things in mind:

1.It is still undetermined which will end up on the album. (We hope
to eventually get everything out in some form)
2.The running times are from the demo versions which of course can
change from the final album version.
3.This list is in chronological order of the completed songs. In some
cases like "Lines in the Sand," the music was written very early in the
    writing process, but
wasn't completed (lyrics and demoed) until later in the year. (Thus
why Metropolis Pt. 2 isn't listed. The music is written, but the lyrics
    aren't and therefore
hasn't been demoed and is not considered "completed")

    Anyway, Here's the List:

1.Raise the Knife (11:15) (lyrics by MP)
2.Where Are You Now (7:15) (lyrics by JP)
3.Take Away My Pain (6:35) (lyrics by JP)
4.Anna Lee (6:35) (lyrics by JL)
5.You or Me (5:55) (lyrics by JP)
6.Burning My Soul (9:00) (lyrics by MP)
7.Lines in the Sand (13:40) (lyrics by JP)
8.The Way it Used To Be (8:00) (lyrics by JL)
9.Just Let Me Breathe (5:25) (lyrics by MP)
10.Peruvian Skies (6:30) (lyrics by JP)
11.Trial of Tears (12:30) (lyrics by JM)
12.Cover My Eyes (3:20) (lyrics by JP)
13.Hollow Years (6:20) (lyrics by JP)
14.A New Millennium (8:15) (lyrics by MP)
15.Speak To Me (6:15) (lyrics by JL)

    >

    February 26, 1997:
2 New Songs and an Update from Mike
The band has finished writing 2 more songs:

A New Millenium (8:15) [Lyrics by MP]
Speak to Me (6:15) [Lyrics by JL]

This brings the current (and most likely the final) taley up to 16 songs
and 2 1/2 hours of music. There is no further news at the moment, but
    Mike "has a feeling that
something is around the corner." Of course, he says he thought the same
thing 6 months ago as well.

Yeah, and we could do a tribute before the album even gets released.
    Sorry :).

In the St. Louis area, DT should play The American Theatre (which is
where they've played before, I believe). Miss. Nights is too small
(I think they've played there, too). I saw Megadeth at The American,
and could easily see DT there. Seats in the balcony, gen. admission
on the floor. Decent acoustics, from what I remember.

What about Avalon? It's a mid-sized club with one of the best soundsystems
in Boston. One of my favorites. It has class, too, unlike pits like the
Middle East or the Rat. It's also one of the louder clubs in Boston, so if
you plan on standing near the front, don't forget your earplugs. I stood
near the front for the Toadies and couldn't hear for 24 hours after. The
Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg is decent, too. I'm going there tomorrow
night to see Tool. It's bigger than a club but not a stadium like the
    FleetCenter.

Yeah, I've dealt with Wildside Imports before and there pretty good about
everything. I believe I ordered the Doctor Butcher CD from them and got it
on time and in one piece.

Has anyone ever dealt with Tunnel Records. I ordered 3 CD's from them on
December 31 and so far, have only received one and I've written them
numerous e-mails and there excuse is that there supplier hasn't sent the
discs to them yet, I mean, is it just me or shouldn't these bootleg places
already have the CDs in stock (wow, runon sentence)

Also, Dream Theater should play in the Buffalo, NY area but I don't know how
well that would go because us people here suck music wise although they did
play here once in 1993 and its made a couple bootleg CD's and I have part of
it on tape. But this was when the radio stations still played good music.

Yeah, okay, so that last post of mine was redundant.... everybody else made
the correction, but I chose to address it before actually having finished
reading the digest. My mistake. Anyway.....

All this talk about "DT in the studio" seems to make people think "studio"
is synonymous with "they're recording". Folks, please remind yourselves
that a "studio" is just a room, which implies to me that DT are "busy in the
studio writing tunes and rehearsing", which clearly is not the same as
recording. A "recording studio" is a place to record.....and it has rooms,
    too :). Just a thought.

One of my friends orders from them all thime I guess. He gave me a
catalog of theirs and said that I should try from them. Of course I
tried and the CDs I wanted weren't in stock and they said they'd have
no idea when they might come in. That's kinduv a turndown to me, but
my friend still says their really reliable. They had nothing else I
wanted at the time, so I've never ordered from them. They've got a
HUGE selection though. At least the catalog I've got has one.

THE GRAMMYS: I totally agree with whatever it was that someone said in the
last jam about the grammys featuring "all types of music." There was no or
very little recognition of the following styles:

Heavy Metal (no, RATM is not metal)
    Big Band Jazz
    Instumental Jazz
    Acid Jazz
    Prog Jazz/Fusion
    Funk
Progressive Rock (I though RUSH shouldve AT LEAST been nominated for best
    Rock album.. Sheryl Crow... UGGHHHH)
    Death Metal
    Black Metal
    Thrash
    Polka
Christian Rock (well.. DC Talk.... I dont even like Chrisian Music much...
maybe Believer or Galactic Cowboys shoulve been nominated...)
    Punk
    "Gangsta" Rap (not music, but..)
    Goth
    Hard Rock

And many other styles.. this is NOT variety... I always thought the Grammys
were at least respectable, but maybe not...

    DT VENUES:

In Phoenix they should play the Mesa ampitheater, or Desert Sky (the album
would have to really be a hit though, its a big venue).

    ANNOUNCEMENT:

The second official FIVRE concert!! My bands first show is this Saturday,
but we recently booked some gigs at a local club opening for a few major
acts, including Tony McAlpine, Sacred Reich, and Warrent. The only
confirmed date though is Sat. March 22nd opening for.. (Drum Roll) E'Nuff
Z'Nuff. Better start growing and teasing my hair... So if you live in
Phoenix come see us, March 22nd at 7:00 PM at the Mason Jar (24th St. and

    Hey there gang!

Got a COOL new disc in today: ELDRITCH: "Seeds of Rage"
Dang, this sucker is serious! It's heavy, technical, progressive, and
just plain cool. The guitarist is pretty serious and the keyboardist is
excellent as well. The keys actually remind me of Superior a bit at
times. The vocalist is very good as well. To me at times he sounds like
a less polished version of an Andre Mateos(ANGRA) or Michael Kiske but
he's still quite good in his own right. Heavy stuff but melodic at times
at well. The lyrics are probably the weakest point but they aren't bad.
    HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Which brings me to a related note: does anyone know anything about
Eldritch? I checked the net but couldn't find crap on them. Just about
the same with CONCEPTION(another AWESOME band!!!) Anyone know where I
can get info on either of these two bands?

I also got to hear some Samael and it was pretty interesting for some
death metal. I'll be checking into them more in the future.

World Trade? They're good, but not really progressive in
any sense of the word. The closest parallel I can think
of to their "Euphoria" album would be Duran Duran's self-
titled one. (You know, "Come Undone", "Ordinary World",
stuff like that.) You could maybe compare them to The
Fixx as well. In general, they're a ressurection of good
    80's pop-rock music.

.. given that there are only about 12 people who have HEARD of the group

elementary school across the street? I hear their cafeteria has nice
acoustic tiling on the walls to dampen the noise. In a pinch I'm sure my
    garage would suffice.

Or there is the Gallagher-Iba arena at OSU in Stillwater. Whatever happens,
they should NOT play the Roxy Music Hall again. Mike had to build his drum
kit around a support beam thoughtfully placed in the middle of the stage.

Did anyone watch Turning Point tonight? The whole concept was about
record companies and bands struggling to make it big. It was rather
interesting and (considering the kind of music I write) disheartening
to learn the politics involved in the music industry from the people
who've faced it. The little people mind you, not the big bands. The
strugglers. An this kinduv made me ponder Dream Theater a bit. I
was thinking about how they're not getting rushed into the studio or
even getting scheduled into the studio soon as far as we know. It's
like the label is stalling in order to maybe ride out their contract.
The music that Dream Theater writes isn't comparable to 90% of the
music that's out there. I've met alot of people who downplay DT just
because they're so talented, or because they use keyboards, or
because their friend said they're not cool.

So how do we break these trends? How do we find a way to incorporate
Dream Theater into the new trendy thing to listen to? Anyone out
there a sociologist? I mean, I wasn't too fond of that Love in
Reverse band on the show, but they were a helluva lot better than
half the shit I hear on the radio these days. It was unfortunate for
these guys that radio stations refused to play their albums just
because they didnt "sound" like the rest of the music out there.
Sigh... I guess I should remember that the words talent and music
    are not synonymous anymore. :P

I just think it's funny how people will torture themselves by
listening to shitty music and ridicule good music just to fit in with
    the "cool" people.

OK, so some people reckon DT are in the studio & others don't... anyone care to
speculate on the type of studio?

Surely, if they're writing stuff, they are recording it at the same time for
DEMO purposes anyway, & where are they gonna do that? In a recording studio?
    In a home studio?

I don't know, but what I believe (from what's been said) is that they're
taking a break from writing/demoing material in the studio, NOT from recording
the new album... & that's quite a bit different from actually recording the
    new album...

..but then again, this is just speculation based on other speculators'
speculations... go on DT, prove me wrong by releasing a quadruple studio
    package next week!!! ;)

Hi all! Just your weekly news on what CDs you can get.

The heavily-requested When Dream And Today Unite continues to
ship. I found that the pressing plant mistakenly gave me an extra rack of
these, so there are actually 1100 of these in print, and the numbers
reflect this. What this means is that there's still enough for some more
orders to come in... I am gradually reaching the end of the original 1000.
It's actually been getting alot of attention lately, must be the influx of
new blood onto the Jam. Welcome, everyone!! In any case, get it while you
    can.

Scenes From A Memory is just about sold out... I have about two
dozen left. Get it now or you're outta luck. :) e-mail me or check my web
page (in my sig below) to find out how.

Those two Dream Theater discs are currently shipping. The two new
ones are about to. Precious Things is now finished and ready to go, except
for one thing: the print shop still has to finish the liners. Then
shipping begins. I got George Fan's CD art in the mail, so the rest of the
puzzle is now complete. The Metallica print run is done and the PT print
run is in progress. Also, there are still room for about 30 or 35 orders
of Precious Things before it becomes sold out.

Darkest of Winters, the next DT disc to come out after that (we're
talking mid-April or so) has even less openings still... around 20. Get it
while you can... by the time the reviews hit the net, it will already be
    too late. :)

The two Rush discs are another story. Critical Mass is, at long
last, sold out. I've got a couple of held reservations that are still
valid for now... if they're not paid in a short time, they will become
available to the public. Also, the prototype test discs will be released
for sale just because demand is that high. If you have even considered
getting Critical Mass, I can only guess that you haven't had time to order
it or didn't know about it, because it has been the single most
significant Rush boot released in a good while. The sound is outstanding,
and reviews have reflected that. Reviews have been positive on a ratio of
around 99:1 versus negative. It's just that good, folks. Cygnus, my older
and less-polished Rush effort, was a 1000-print, it sold out at $23, and
now commands $50-60 in aftermarket resale. Critical Mass was a double disc
that STARTED at $50, and was only a 500-print. It will hit $100 by
mid-summer without a doubt, as Rush collectors are loyal and will pay any
price for the gems they still need for their collection. So please, for
the love of whatever deity you believe in, get yours today before they are
    gone for good.

As for Rush: Virtual Songs, this will sell out long before
shipping even if the current pace of orders slows down. I imagine it will
ship in May as originally planned, as no real bad delays have come up. I
will have sound bites of it on my web site soon. It IS audience, that much
is true, so it's not as rich and ballsy as a soundboard tape, but it's
very clear and deep and powerful, and compared to the other CD boots and
tapes from the Test For Echo tour, the source for Virtual Songs literally
blows them away. I'll put an A/B comparison up for you all, because
hearing is believing. Please get your pre-order in for this ASAP before
they're gone. Also, reservations on this DO have to be paid as soon as
possible... the early orders are what finances the print run itself.
Remember, after two years of doing this, I still haven't really made much
off of it, to speak of. It's a hell of a hobby, though.

That's it for now. Please e-mail me and/or check the URL below if
you want to know more or have any questions. Take it easy all!
