         Hey jammers,

Sorry about the lack of DT content, as I'm still recovering from my
         Birch Hill delirium.

I saw someone post something about L'amour and the various bands that
played there a few years back. I was listening to some Badlands this
weekend, and I was wondering the details of the tragic end to Ray
Gillen's life. I know he left us a few years back, I remember seeing
a tribute notice about it, but was wondering the exact date and cause
of death (not being morbid, just a curious fan). I saw them a few
times here in the NYC area back in 90-91, and was wondering. Anyone
         with info, please advise...

    Sorry Vince,

But I think that if anyone has a copy of this video and would be willing
to sell it, it should go to a drummer (maybe like....me?!).
I used to think Niel Peart was the best drummer - perhaps he still is all
around the best rock percussionist, but Portnoy does some of the most
amazing coordinations not meant to be performed by a human!

If anyone is out there ith this video, can you e-mail me at jcase@ou.edu

    Thanks so much,
    Jon

    Hey Jammerz,

I'd like to let everyone know that I have made some changes, updates to my
    website.
    Here's what's changed:

    * The YtseWeb page (IRC) has been updated. Wanna see some new jammer faces?
          Then come on over :-)

    * Album of 1996 poll results. Thanks to Mike 'Syrinx' Ostrich for supplying
me the list. Thanks to all of you who have voted btw.

A sucky thing has happened as well. Due to a computercrash I have lost a
whole bunch of guestbook entries :-( ... If you have signed the guestbook,
but you don't see your entry on the list, please sign it again. I will make
sure your entry is added immediately.

OK that's it for now. Any comments ? E-Mail me about it. Thanks to all the
ppl who have visited the site so far. Please stop by on the site again :-)

Yahoo doesn't know what the hell they are talking about. They have had 2
vocalists throughout their 10 album career. The first 7 albums feature Jon
Oliva, who is my favorite singer. He can sound incredibly evil when hitting
certain high notes, but I have never heard him use a death metal growl. The
latest 3 albums have Zachary Stevens on vocals, and I guess technically he has a
better voice than Jon Oliva, but I don't like it as much :) The last album, Dead
Winter Dead, is with Zachary but has Jon Oliva singing two songs, I Am, and
Doesn't Matter Anyway. Their earlier stuff is thrash metal, and their later
stuff is more progressive artsy classical influence metal. If you just want
progressive I would recommend getting Gutter Ballet, Streets, Edge of Thorns,
Handfull of Rain, and Dead Winter Dead. If you wanna know what I'm talking about
when I say Jon can sound evil, listen to "Beyond the Doors of the Dark" off their
"Hall of the Mountain King" album. That album btw has the song "In the Hall of
the Mountain King" by that composer Grieg. Although Savatage calls it Prelude to
Madness, and use it as a prelude to their Hall of the Mountain King song.

    Hope this helps

Justin the High Cleric of Lickalick

(ps: if you get Fight for the Rock, don't think it is representative of their
other stuff, it's not, this album is very commercial sounding, still a good
album, but nothing compared to their other stuff)

It's been three long weeks, but I survived. Three weeks in LI without
Internet access - Mom's modem died, and she didn't tell me about it. :(
But now, I'm back in Vermont, with my computer and Ethernet card. Yay!

First, to everyone I owe a tape: Please continue to be patient. I've
fallen somewhat behind on trades, because I don't have a dual tape deck
at home, and I couldn't tell anyone because I didn't have any net
access. Bafu, your package arrived after I left for break, so I only got
it today. Pam, I mailed you. Jim, SOON! I promise. :) Tapeswap people
    - well, I've gotten a lot of new CDs, so hopefully you'll find the wait
    worthwhile. :)

Next, the FAQ: I've gotten a lot of stuff to put in the next installment
of the FAQ. Enough that I'm going to move the version number up to 4.5.
I'm also going to try to tweak the format somewhat to make it look
    better. Suggestions are always welcome!

Marcel: I picked up Lemur Voice over the break. Holy shit! You guys
did a kick-ass job on this one! Your bassist is one of the best I've
heard in a long time. And that crazy shit you do on Akasha - ouch! I
hurt my hands *thinking* about air-guitaring to that one!

I also picked up Altura's "Mercy" over the break. I've only listened to
it about three or four times now, but the first impression I got is that
they try too hard. It seemed to me that all too often they were weird
for the sake of being weird. Little runs placed haphazardly here and
there with no distinct melody or rhythm that just seem to detract from
the song. And you can feel the drummer holding back from screaming "I
    wanna be like Mike!"

The Jam: God knows how far behind I am. The last one I read was
probably dated 12/17 or so. But I do intend to read them all, even if it
    takes me a few days.

The #jam: Hopefully I'll be able to make an appearance this week. I
have a ton of stuff to catch up on, since I thought I was going to have a
computer for three weeks and didn't. D'oh!

OK, enough rambling. Gotta get myself back into VT mode again. Happy
thought of the week: Once I get my hands on A Farewell to Kings and A
Show of Hands, I'll have every Rush album on CD. Woohoo!

    Laters!

Andrew: I got my copy of SG from MC on Friday 1/3/97. It's quite good. Not
quite a match for CIS. But then you might expect it to be, if you know the

    Randall,

I sent in a personal check to MC for SG#1 on Dec 16th. With the holiday's
    and all,
I didn't expect to receive the CD until maybe middle of January at the
    earliest.
I know it takes at least 7-10 business days to guarantee funds for a
    personal check,
and I imagine they ship the CD's in the least expensive (read "slowest")
    manner. I'll
probably start bugging them if I don't have it in 4 weeks time (13 Jan).

    Andy

ps. I'll let you know when I get mine, and how much nagging I have to do.

    uhh... no.

i've never heard waltari, but 3rd and the mortal is not death metal. and
really not all that heavy. they are much more atmospheric, and i don't mean
atmospheric metal. they're more in a dark-ambient vein. their newest one,
"painting on glass", is one of the best albums i've ever heard. it's
    definitely in an ambient vein.

    That's pretty damn funny.

No they're NOT death metal. They're hard rock with prog/symphonic overtones.

    Message-ID: <199701061829.AA25172@gateway2.prudential.com>

    Hello,
Please, if after reading this, you choose to flame me, do
so privately. It saves everyone the trouble of reading my reviews again
and again and allows more precise points to be made by all parties
    involved.
I feel I need to point some people in the right direction. If you
go back and read my post about the Rush tribute, I never said once that I
did not like the album because the songs did not sound enough like the
originals. I agree with the person who cited *Watchtower* by Hendrix as
the kind of creativity that can come from cover songs. Dave Matthews
version is also exceptional and completely different. My problem was that
I felt (that equals IMHO), some of the musicians did not exercise
restraint in their playing or show due effort for a recorded work
produced for sale. Examples: the ridiculously overdone drum line on the
intro to Jacob's Ladder kills the mood of the entire piece. The lead
guitar on Anthem, though well done, is too much in too many places. The
end solo on Natural Science (a version I do LIKE with this exception
BTW), show no respect for the confines of the key it is supposed to be
in. Those are a few examples of why I thought many of the performers on
this album did not do a good job.
I also feel the production is lackluster, and it is very poorly
mixed. The bass is way too far down in many of the songs, and there is
little or no attention to the keys on some songs (the songs with keys,
that is). Furthermore, the musicians seem to have thrown this together on
a whim as their timing is out of sync and they solo and fill over each
other, making some songs way too busy and downright annoying.
On the other hand, I love the version of CTTH. The guitar solo is
an excellent variation and the band is soooooo tight. The Analog Kid has
amazing guitar lines that fit the piece well. And Stu Hamm's work on the
album is excellent, though he does show a tendency to "show off" where a
rhythm line is needed. Oh, and since he reads this: Marcel had one of the
most solid performances on this album. Freewill's guitar was great.
But then again, many of the vocals don't fit the mood of the
songs. Jack Russell: good with Great White, but not on Analog Kid. And
the guy heaving after every line in Jacob's Ladder. I don't care for it.
But I do like Devin Townsend and James Labrie's work very much (biased on
the latter). Devin's voice expresses the passion involved in the subject
of the song without getting overbearing, like he occassionally did with
Vai. And James is... well, he's James.
In conclusion, I would like to say I have bought tribute albums
in the past. Two of the more notable are Gn'R: The Spaghetti Incident and
Stone Free: Jimi Hendrix tribute. Both of these albums have some
incredible covers that sound very little like the originals. The Cure's
Purple Haze, Nigel Kennedy's Fire, and Gn'R's Human Being are examples. I
love these two albums and listen to them frequently. Working Man will
never equal or come close to these albums because IN MY MIND the
performers who made it, with a couple of exceptions (read Fates Warning),
did not put the effort necessary into the album to call it a TRIBUTE. It
merely stands as an album full of other bands that redo Rush songs.
If you made it this far, I commend you.

    Andrew

HI there, I just wanted to add my two cents to this discussion....
Personally I think that the line should stay the same, because regardless
of which year the song is being PERFORMED in, the lyrics were written
mentioning a specific time period for a reason. I really doubt that they
would change the words, because if they did, they would change the
context of the song. For example: "the year 2000 brings new
questions..." This may be true, but they are different then the ones of
the nineties. Anyway, everyone should just enjoy the songs for what they
are...awesome! :) Take it easy everyone.

Taco Belhai said about my favourite Marillion-basher :

    > This guy had every right to say that something (in this case
    > Marillion) sucked.

But what's the point ? He had *no* opinion, eventhough he *thought* he
did. An opinion is based on knowledge, and he didn't have that, where
Marillion was concerned. You can't listen to a *few* songs *once*, and
decide that they "suck". Let me know if I'm wrong, 'cause in that case
I'm on the wrong list. I still thought you had to give music a chance
before you call it crap. *I* sure wasn't an instant Marillion-fan.

    > I don't think we have ytsejam police yet stating that we can't say
    > anything "sucks." I hope we never do.

How about "think before you post" ? That's what *I* do.
(and then I post it *anyway*... Doh!)

    > He wasn't trying to offend anybody.

He didn't even have to *try*. When you say a band "sucks", *knowing*
they've got a lot of fans on the list, you *are* trying to offend
people. He phuqing offended *me*, and I'm sure I'm not the *only* one.

    > And so what if you got offended. Deal with it.

I did... publically. When someone bashes my favourite band for no good
reason, I'm there to stick up for them. I'd do that for *Dream Theater*
on the Marillion list too, but I don't have to... They're not shallow
enough to make "this sucks" or "this rules" comments (no offense).

    > People start ripping apart anyone that slags on their favorite bands.
    > Why must we do this? Are you afraid that their opinion actually has
    > value? Just ignore them.

Here's how *I* see it... I put in a *lot* of effort to inform people
about music they've never heard (not just Marillion). You wouldn't
believe how many e-mails I've written, to describe Marillion's music,
so people know what they're about... That way they know what to expect,
or better yet, what *not* to expect (they're NOT a phuqin' metal band).
Some bands need their fans to promote them, and Marillion is such a
    band (so is Dream Theater).

Then along comes this idiot that simply says "they suck", and shit like
that. Because of one stupid post like that, people could decide *not*
to check out Marillion. And that would *truly* "suck".

    >> This is not really a flame... Just an honest opinion... ;->
    >
    > This statement brings up another question: howcome after flaming
    > someone does the poster say "this is not really a flame?" I took this
    > post to be a flame.

Pay attention, will you ? The point that I wanted to get across was,
that if *his* Marillion-bashing post was "an honest opinion" then my
flame was one too. If I confused anyone... my post *was* a flame !

    > Would you have flamed this guy if he had said "IMO, Marillion SUCKS?"
    > Hmmm...

    IMO, I would have.
