    Hello :-)

Who has the lowest numbered Christmas CD? I can't remember offhand, but
    I think mine is #854.

According to the latest edition of Kerrang!, "Dream Theater are currently
recording a new album which is due for release in May".

    I think they're badly informed.

How does IME compare to DT? They don't, other than the fact that IME
opened for some shows on the Awake tour. Nonetheless, they are GREAT.
Scenery and Fish is in my top five of last year. When I saw them live, I
said to myself, "Gosh, Miami Sound Machine on crack." They would lock into
a huge groove and the percussionist would just GO OFF. Scenery and Fish
has some of that, but it is REALLY melodic in spots and just a tad more
'popish' than DT. These guys are one of those bands that aren't easily
categorized and unfortunately will probably suffer the same fate as other
bands that that could be said of - they are are destined to wander the
    earth in musical obscurity.

First, the Sabbath album that Gillen recorded, but then was recorded over by
Tony Martin, was entitled "The Eternal Idol." Or maybe it was "Headless Cross."
One of those two. Both of which are excellent records, I might add. Just pretend
you have never heard of the Ozzy era, and imagine a new band. That's a sore
spot with me. Most of the post-Ozzy era Sabbath is extremely well written
    and performed
metal. It's the Sabbath name that screws everything up. There is a
    compilation of the
post Ozzy era entitled "The Sabbath Stones" which contains all the best Tony
    Martin
    era material.

Second, some asked about who some people on the Queen tribute were. Paul
    Shortino
was the singer for 80's cheese metal band Ruff Cutt or however they spelled
    it. John Bush
was the singer in the excellent, underrated LA band Armored Saint. He now
    sings for Anthrax.
Mark Boals sang on a few Yngwie Malmsteen cd's, and was accompanying YM on his
latest tour here in the states.

P.S I think the word "era" was used too many times throughout this post. JFYI

Since I fancy myself somewhat reasonable, I will explain myself. I was
just making a point, so I didn't really expect to be confronted on this...
A good while ago two of my better friends were telling me about this
"Awesome Band!" that I had to hear. They were referring to Amorphis.
They pumped the band up huge, telling me about everything they do. I was
quite interested, but it took them two weeks to get around to showing me
the music. It turned out that it was more "doom" and depressing than I'm
into, and it didn't have the complexity that I so enjoy. This is a prime
example of a time when my saying "this band sucks" is to be taken as an
opinion, and is definately something yuo can and should disagree with if
you like the band. I like doom metal with clear vocals, or death metal
with the growling vocals... but I'm not a big fan of slower doom metal
with the growling vocals. I do understand the music's appeal to
listeners, but it didn't do anything for me.

I will note that I am planning to listen to their most recent release.
I'm told it's considerably different from their other work (much to my
friends' dismay). My idea of good doom metal is Ved Buens End, Solitude
    Aeturnus, Candlemass Etc...

I will give Amorphis another listen, if you can point me in the direction
of what you would consider their finer songs.

    Thanks

To the person who asked why older Rush albums are only 40 minutes
    long...

Back then they were all on LP, which can only do 23 minutes per
side without grooving too thin to guarantee non-skipping. A great many
Rush albums push THAT limit to the edge, such as Caress of Steel and Power
Windows. My Hold Your Fire LP skips like mad because it's 25 or so minutes
per side. By then, CDs were coming into vogue, so Rush started writing
55-60 minute albums instead of 40-45 minute albums. So please be fair to
the Boyz in Rush... their obstacle was nothing more than the technology of
    the time. :)

You can still find the laserdisc fairly easily. Here in the Bay Area I come
across it on a regular basis, but it's at full retail (29.95) Ken Crane's in
Westminster, CA might have it and if they do it would only be 23.95.

Also, I was off the jam for a while so if there's any news about Superior I
would love to hear it, especially if it has to do with touring America! (I
    can dream, can't I?)

Back in the days before Compact Disc (yes, SOME of us are old enough to
remember those days) the format of choice was the LP, today known as Vinyl.
For optimum sound performance they say a record should be between 16-22
minutes per side. Rush's albums fell within this area. Also, most albums
released were :30 (Van Halen & KISS) as Much as :45-:50 (Genesis).

By today's standards Rush's albums are short, back then they were average in
length, but not quality. I would argue that even though they were only
:36-:40, they are better then most albums today that are :50+.

    Scott

ps - Sometimes this CD format can be a pain in the ass too. All The World's
A Stage has a song missing from the LP version (What You're Doing) but it
doesn't list that on the back at all. I think there's a track missing on
    Exit Stage Left also.

I have the Hear N' Aid video that's been discussed lately. I made mine
directly from the factory master so it's really nice quality and is in
stereo. Running time total is :30. It contains the video for the song and
the making of the song. If Anyone would like a copy I'd be willing to set up

"I'm Not Amused" is a classic, to my was of thinking, as is "Why Can't You
Believe In Me." Trendy, I guess....the two singles. I guess I just don't
agree with the assessment above. Though, if you're getting into the band,
I'd start with "Space In Your Face."

    >I'm also starting to get into Rush. I promised myself I wouldn't, cause

    That's actually a time-period thing, rather than a Rush thing. A 40 minute
record in 1977 is actually a little on the long side. Look at the first Van
Halen record, for example. Rush and Genesis actually made some of the
longest records of the late-70's. We won't even talk about The Ramones. At
any rate, like everyone else, Rush is making hour-long albums now, for
    better or worse.

And my own commentary on the Marillion thing:

It's certainly very possible for a Dream Theater fan not to like Marillion.
Chris Ptacek correctly mentions that Marillion certainly isn't a metal band
and a lot of people don't consider them to be "real" prog. Of course, a lot
of people also don't consider Rush, Queensryche, King's X, Fates Warning,
Pink Floyd, and, yes, Dream Theater, to be progressive, either. I do, and
highly, highly recommend all of those bands to everyone I can every chance I
    get.

At any rate, I think Dream Theater and Marillion ARE similar and are both
Progressive bands (though I don't think they're as similar as Dream Theater
and Rush....heh). And Marillion's awesome....one of my favorite bands.

Randall Braun asked about IME disks and comparisons. I have them
both. Initially, I think I like Dig better. But, I have only had S&F
for a week. I do think this one will grow on me because I'm already
humming 'One More Astronaut'. S&F does not sound like a continuation
of Dig-they are two different albums going in different directions.
They don't remind me of DT at all. Randall, if you can get Dig in the
cutouts, by all means buy it, it's a damn good CD. S&F also is an
enhanced CD meaning that you get Quicktime to download and several
little 'movies' of the band with some music from both albums-kinda
neat. So, in conclusion, I would recommend Dig first then get S&F or
just buy them both, it'll be worth it.

Unless you absolutely can't live without that song, I would
suggest passing on Hear N Aid. In truth, Stars is the only good track
on it, with the exception of a version of Rush' Distant Early Warning
taken from the GUP tour in 1984.
Also, there is a very notable buzz at the beginning of Stars
on the CD that was not on the original vinyl. I have both of these.
If you can get the boot with an alternate version, I'd say
grab it. The guitar solos may be different.=20
Also, in case you aren't aware of this, the CD version was
MUCH longer than the radio play version with a TON of solos, so if you
    like 80s shred, that's a little added bonus. :)

Back from Winter break. I spent the break with my girlfriend in NJ,
and I had no clue how boring that place really is. Lots of deer, though,
and that's real exciting for a New York City boy.
In defense of Amorphis, in the little bit I've heard, they
definitely struck me. "Black Winter Day" is a way cool song, complete
with growls and regular singing and keyboards and everything. You could
accuse them of sucking, but not for being unoriginal or your average
    run-of-the-mill-trying-to-sound-the-same death metal band.

Neil so often does, wonderfully combine the etherial with the down home.
One of those melodies that makes ya jump up out of your seat and grab
    the axe.

    Hello!

Just a quick note for all German speaking Jammers - again:

Wer Info ueber THE MIRROR, den deutschen DT-Fanclub haben will, einfach in
    die Webpages schauen:

    http://www.westend.com/TheMirror

    On with the Jam...

     Yepp! I agree!
But did You know that *Bangkok* was written by the ex-ABBA
members/songwriters Bjorn & Benny for their musical Chess? Check out the
music to Chess, it is realy good.
Vai have rearanged the piece quite a lot on the record but I saw him on
the Skyscraper Tour with DLR and at that time he did Bangkok in almost
the same arangement as in Chess as the main part of his solo number, it
    was amazing.

    Cheers,.
