Ian Gillan was never, never, never associated with George Lynch. That was Ray Gillen. Check the liner notes. Ian Gillan and Ray Gillen have one thing in common - they both were in Black Sabbath for the proverbial blink of an eye. Hey, that reminds me of the Billy Squier song by that name. Hmm. I know how I'd choose to fix "LtL" live after the new decade starts.... I'd make a subtle change to the lyrics:

The 90's brought new questions / new solutions to be found I fell in love to be let down

Almost, it seems like a no-brainer. The song -is- about learning to live with AIDS/HIV and thus is firmly rooted in the 90's (and one hopes, the next decade won't be as troubled by AIDS/HIV).

Incidentally, John Myung's lyrics for "LtL" are my usual defense against know-nothing morons who slag DT on the Net. "Stupid lyrics?" I counter. "Your homework assignment is to listen to "LtL" and tell us what the song is about." Works damn near every time. :)

personally, i love marillion, but that's not what i'm posting about... i just want to recap what i've seen-

some dude gets on says they suck

itchy tells the dude he thinks his opinion sucks

itchy gets bashed on for his opinion about this other guys opinion with the defense statement that this other guy was only stating his opinion! anyways..

i personally dont like to hear someone just get on to say a band "sucks" not only is it not really judging a band, i give this example for that- take it that you're in a band, put a lot of heart into what you do, you like prog music. a critic hates prog and odd time signatures, so he gets in the paper and bashes ya left and right, even tho ya got a hell of a lotta talent, and you put a lot into what you do. if ya dont like em, at least back up what you dont like if you're gonna tell a public forum about it! warn other people about certain tastes you think might not like it, do SOMETHING offering a little insight. and beyond that all it does is start up big pointless posts of "YEAH!!!" or "NO WAY MAN THEY DONT SUCK!!" i think opinions on bands is a great thing for a list like this, i found so many bands this way, but certain ways can prove more effective than others. if someone would have came up to me and said "DT RULES!" before i'd ever heard them i doubt i ever would have bought a cd by them, it wasnt before i'd heard tons of great details about em that i just finally had to break down and buy em. same concept :)

Subject: February 8 Show at ME

    Hi all!

Here's a little info on the next finneus show. We don't yet know who the other bands will be, but we DO know that we'll be on the third floor again and we'll be the second band to go on. We should hit the stage around 11:15 pm or so. As things pan out, I'll pass along the details.

It's come to our attention that the lovely Annie Haslam (what a voice) will be at the TLA that same night. If any of you out there are planning on seeing her performance (I wish I was), by all means slide on over to the Middle East after her show and see finnneus. Annie will be done by 11:00 pm and the TLA is just down the road from the Middle East. Nice night of prog, eh?

"as to the album (hold your fire), there are going to be 10 new tracks on this one, but don't worry: they're not short or anything. we simply decided that since more and more people are buying cassettes and CD's, why should we be limited by the archacic time considerations of records? so we're probably going to have over 50 minutes of music on this album, which will give a cutting engineer headaches, but means more scope for us, and of course 'good value for money' (in the english phrase) for the buyer."

Ummm, maybe I'm stoned, but I thought Oni Logan ( ex of Ferrari ) was Lynch Mob's first singer. Also, I thought for sure that Ray Gillen sang for Sabbath on the album right before Tony Martin took over the first time. Maybe I've lost my marbles.

Er, no. Ray did indeed sing on _Sacred Groove_, along with several other oddball talents (including Matthew and Gunnar Nelson (!!)).

Ian Gillen the first lead singer for Lynch Mob? Er, no. Oni Logan was the lead singer on Lynch Mob's first release, _Wicked Sensation_.

On a DT note (more than one, actually), I've just finished writing reviews of _Images and Words_, _Awake_, and _A Change of Seasons_ for the All-Music Guide. I'd like a little feedback from some hardcore DT fans, so if anybody's interested I can send you the reviews and I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know what you think.

OK, gang. I decided to do it today, because it's better than writing programs. :) Version 4.5 of the FAQ is done!!

Everybody: Please read it over if you get a chance, and let me know if you find any glaringly bad stuff. If you do, please send me private e-mail. For the time being, I'm really behind on Jams, and I won't see any recent posts probably for a week or so (yes, I'm that far behind. :)

People that maintain mirror sites: Thank you again for all your hard work! Please check my link to your mirror, and make sure it's correct. You can grab the zip file from the usual place (ftp://132.198.250.43/pub/dt/dtfaq.zip), or only the .htm or .txt from there as well. PLEASE remember that the original file is .html, but on my FTP site (which runs Win 3.11) it's called .htm. Remember to change that extension if necessary.

If you do NOT currently maintain a mirror and you would like to, or if you DO currently maintain a mirror and I don't know about it, PLEASE write to me and let me know. I'd like to have links to all the mirrors, and make sure that every copy of the file that's out there is current and correct.

Asian jammers: Thanks to HyunSoo Cheon, there is now a Korean mirror site!

Oh, yeah. My officemate's computer, which is at 132.198.8.4, appears to be down temporarily, so that FTP link won't be working for a couple of days.

We all owe great thanks to Mike Portnoy for helping me clear up a lot of stuff. In the HTML version of the faq, pretty much anything that has that nifty "New" graphic next to it came striaght from the horse's mouth.

Links to the files are the same as always. http://www.emba.uvm.edu/~cmerlo/dtfaq.html for the HTML file, and .txt for the text file. ftp://132.198.250.43/pub/dt/dtfaq.txt if you prefer. I'll be posting the faq to the newsgroup in a few days, once I get any mistakes taken care of.

Thank you all for everything! BTW, I would also appreciate mail if you read the FAQ and think it's ok. :)

Hi there. I just thought I'd let everyone who's interested that I came across a web site for Ward's Music, who put on a Mike Portnoy drum clinic. They're selling a Tama drum kit that he played, but it's kind of expensive (without the cymbals, it's $7,995 Canadian). I can't afford it, but it's cool anyway.

I picked up the new Solitude Aeturnus--- I don't like it as much as Through the Darkest Hour. This one sounds more... grungy? I'll have to listen to it some more before I pass Final Judgement.

I also got the Nevermore EP, In Memory. It looks like they released this just before The Politics of Esctasy this year. I think both are awesome. If you like Metallica, Pantera (only these guys actually have a vocalist, and they're tighter, IMO), then you'll like them. Both of these are much better then their first album (which I still thought was good). This stuff is so clean sounding... TPOE hasn't left my player for a few weeks.

Helstar, Nostferatu was another pick. Sounds a little dated (never thought I'd say this about something that was released in '89), but it's fast, tight and good. I haven't listened to it too much yet. How does the other release compare?

And can anyone give a concise descripiton of what the Hellacopters sound like? Satu was asking me about them and I actually saw the CD at the store here in San Lorenzo the other day. Thanks.

And lastly, I *finally* picked up Live In Tokyo over the Christmas Holiday. Really, I can't believe what an idiot I've been never looking for this for the past few years I've known about it. Let me tell you, if you don't have this, or aren't searching for it, you are NOT a real Dream Theater Fan. This thing is f*cking awesome! JP's solo at the end of To Live Forever might be the highlight of the vid. This is Barfbag, right? (reopening an old controversy). Of course, watching this thing on the big screen through the AVS (?) system with the speakers cranked up is the best way to go. We were just watching the thing in awe. If there's a weak link in this band, I sure as hell can't imagine what it is. Afterwards, we were like, "Joe Satriwho? Rushwho? Metalliwhat? DREAM THEATER FOREVER!" (sorry, it just had to be said). And I found it at Tower Records in Stockton, CA, of all places.
