in spite of all the crap that did get nominated over far more deserving
artists, i have not yet lost all respect for the Grammies. Their saving
grace? the MACARENA got a grand total of ZERO nominations!!!!!!!!!!!!

and therefore, the slim thread of grammy respect i retain is left
unsevered for another year.....now if someone could explain how Bryan
    Adams got a nomination......

                                    partha

did any artists who would be generally popular with this crowd get any
    nominations? i haven't seen a complete list....

Yeah, absolutely. Knopfler is awesome. Every guitarist oughta take a whack
at "Sultans of Swing," which is just some amazing playing. The first couple
of albums, I'd say, are stronger than the last two, but they're all awfully
    good.

I actually think the first record is stronger than "Machine Fish," which I
think is farther afield from "Space In Your Face" than "Galactic Cowboys"
is. Anyhow, I don't disagree about the second album being better than the
first, but I WOULD say that "Galactic Cowboys" is representative of their
work. I don't really understand your ambivalence about the record, but,
then again, that's the record I started with.

MK's style is somewhat different from the typical metal shredder. As I understand, he is more of a picker than a shredder, i.e., he's a finger-picker. In this he is more like a C&W guitarist (not saying he is; its just where the technique is more common.) I know he made a recording w/ Chet Atkins, one of the better C&W guitarists a few years ago, A MK/DS home page: http://www-students.unisg.ch/~tgygax/ds/index.html

Have Los Delo Rios (or whoever the Mongoloids who wrote the Macarena were) even made an album? I've only ever seen that song on dance-mix compilations and such. One-hit*-wonderX10^n.

    * Here's my theory on Macarena... It's *not* actually popular, nor was it ever. Nobody actually liked the song. The media found it somehow, decided they needed a fluff story, and told the masses it was the next "big thing". The "weak-minded" (perhaps "mislead" would be a kinder term... Bah, what do I care...) picked up on this and assumed it was true. Next thing you know, Hawaiian Punch is using it to sell punch, John MacCarter's talking about it on GIANT radio (some sort of chip dip that was supposed to be the Macarena... don't ask me, I only work there), and 14 clubs use it in their routines for the Mummer's Parade. Maybe I'm way off, but I smell *conspiracy*. I bet the CIA, Bigfoot, and Hitlerbot were in on it too...

ok, the dt x-mas disc was something sent to everyone in the DT international fan club last december (iced earth ref:) tracklist includes 3 ronnie scotts tracks, a u2, metallica, and rush cover, plus a version of o holy night in top sound from a soundcheck.. and you cant forget the two lovely intro and outro tracks of the band goofing off in the studio and doing some free jamming. :)

I don't need to mention Racer-X, but there once was a band located in Western Massachusetts by the name of Plastic-X. They were an amusing metal band, with songs named "Dope Jam", "Turning the Knife", "Fuck You!", and "We Fuck Antelope", whose former bass player Chris "Junior" LaPlante found himself playing for Mucky Pup. I wish my Plastic-X "Dope Jam" t-shirt weren't as worn out as it is. It was fun to wear.

Eric Johnson's "Pavillion" and Joe Satriani's "(You're) My World" are nominated for Best Rock Instrumental. But that's about it, AFAIK.

On a different note, someone mentioned Paul Northfield as a possible producer for the next DT album. I was flipping thru the liner notes to the live Gentle Giant album _Playing the Fool_, and his name popped out as the engineer. It sounds quite good for a late 70s live album, and the performance is amazing.

Just thought I'd throw that in.
