Greetings. Not that I want to interrupt the fruitful discussion of
Kirk Hammett's sexual orientation, but for a quick moment I'd like to
relate the following DTC that appears in the new issue of Metal Edge.
Those of you not interested in such nonsense can continue your discussion:

After spending the bulk of 1996 writing as a band, DREAM THEATER
are finally ready to start recording in anticipation of a summer release.
"We have enough material at this point, and we're itching to go," said
drummer Mike Portnoy. "Things keep getting pushed and everything, and I
think a lot of the personnel changes at the label have delayed things,
but I think we're ready to go. I'm going to try and fight for a double
album, but it's yet to be seen if that will actually happen. If it ends
up getting cut to a single album, we'll fill it to the max- 75 minutes.
Whatever's left we could use as either an EP, in between albums, or
    b-sides and stuff.
In contrast to the recording of their previous albums, Portnoy
said he'd like to record this album one song at a time, rather than one
instrument at a time. "That was it's not one drum sound on the whole
album and one guitar sound on the whole album, each song can have a
different feel, a different sound, and a different identity," he said.
"Also, it will really keep us focused on one song at a time and help the
band's vibe, for us to always be together." The project will be
keyboardist Derek Sherinian's first since joining the band for the AWAKE
tour. "There was never any questioning his playing ability, that's the
reason he got the gig to begin with. The next question was his writing
ability, and he's a great asset to the band's writing. He's got a lot of
ideas ready to explode becausde, for so many years, he was a hired gun
with KISS and Alice Cooper and he was never really able to contribute
musical ideas. Now he's got 30 years of ideas ready to come out."
Until the summer release, Portnoy can be heard on the Rush
tribute album WORKING MAN, where he played drums on six tracks and was
credited as the album's Creative Consultant, gathering musicians and
putting the song list together. Singer James LaBrie provided vocals for
two tracks on the Queen Tribute, DRAGON ATTACK, "Sheer Heart Attack" and
"One Vision" (where Portnoy played a part in the production, recording
the vocals. Guitarist John Petrucci also appears on the Queen album,
lending his six-string to "Another One Bites The Dust." "We've been out
of the public eye for a year and a half now," said Portnoy, "but we feel
confident enough in the material that we can go to the next level with
    the new album."

    AND THEN LATER ON.....

Clinics are nothing new for Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and
guitarist John Petrucci, but when the bandmates appeared together at
Tuxedo Junction, in Danbury, CT., it was the first workshop of its kind
on American soil. "We did a few clinics in Europe together in March, but
that was the only US clinic we've ever done with me and John together,"
said Portnoy a few days after the Nov. 25 event, which was sponsored by
the East Coast Music Mall. "I've done almost 100 clinics in the past year
and a half that the band's been off the road. It keeps the band's name
alive , and I can test the new material at the clinics- fans are getting
to hear the new material, getting a Dream Theater fi while we work on the
album, and hopefully learning something as well."
In Portnoy's portion of the clinic, he detailed the use of time
signatures and how he manipulates them in Dream Theater's songs. To
demonstrate, he drummed to a tape of "Just Let Me Breathe," a new track
that was written as a response to the current state of the music
industry, and to an instrumental track of "Raise The Knife," another new
cut. "I'd like to take this opportunity to field some questions, since
that's not something we usually do at our gigs," he joked before
answering a series of questions from the crowd. His advise to aspiring
drummers? "Don't try and imitate other players- do what's best for you,
that's how you get your own style." And when asked where he does his best
writing? "I've written some of my best parts on the toilet, the acoustics
    are great."
After starting his portion of the clinic by detailing his warmup
techniques to the guitar players on hand, Petrucci went into a
demontration of scales and how he breaks them down and restructures them
to create his "signature" sound. "Once I come up with a technique, I just
mutate the idea," he said, scattering his explanations with "all you do,"
"everybody got that?" and "that's it." "You're finding out what I'm all
about, and it's not that much," he said to the wide-eyed crowd. "When
you break down what I'm doing, it's really quite simple." Why did it
seemlike he was the only person there that believed that!?

AND UNDER THE PICTURES (one of Mike playing, one of John playing, and one
    of the two together)

In addition to the tribute albums that are detailed in the '97
preview and reviewed in Playback, Mike and John kept busy with other
projects during Dream Theater's down time last year. Mike can be found on
the LESSONS WITH THE GREATS VOL.III instructional drumming video, and
John wrote and recorded two songs for Sega video games. The band plans on
entering the studio to record their fourth studio album later this month.

Clinics weren't always easy for Mike Portnoy. "I shied away from
clinics for a long time," he explained, "I was intimidated. I finally got
cornered to do a couple in Germany, and I figured, 'What the f.ck, they
can't understand me anyway , I'll test it out.' It felt really
comfortable, I realized that all I had to do was go up there and be
myself and that's all they wanted to see." Mike and his wife Marlene are
expecting their first child in May. If it's a girl, Mike wants to name
her Randi, a cross between his mother's and grandmother's names. They
    still haven't decided on a boy's name.

John Petrucci opened his portion of the clinic with "Lost Without
You," a song he wrote for his wife. John and Mike jammed together before
and after their portions of the clinic were done.

You'd be surprised. At the university I attend, they openly call themselves
queer, and put up posters all over the place about the queer events. Pretty
wierd. I never understood the concept of self-imposed segregation.

    >>you bought it, if it wasn't directly from him.

Well, it is available in stores now... here in MI I found it at Harmony
House. I don't know if that's a nationwide chain though. Blockbuster Music
may also carry it since they do carry a great selection of music. I have
seen Perpetual Burn there, so I don't see why they wouldn't carry
Perspective. You can also try asking them to order it in for you if it's
    not in stock.

I myself got it straight from Jason as soon as I heard of it's release. I
got the cd within a month... actually, just a few weeks, so I was really
happy with the service. If you want to give that a try, check out his web
site at: http://www.guitarists.com/. Really, to anyone who wondered about
ordering it by mail... I did get it within a few weeks so it looks like he
and his management are very reputable. I know I don't usually trust mail
order services, but in this case I found it to be good.

It's really great to see more people getting into Jason's music. :) Hope
you find it real soon :)

    Take care,
    Irene

Well, I went to what I thought would be a shit-splat music store in the
shit-splat town I live in to try to find some used CD's from jammers'
reccomendations. Imagine my astonishment to find Savatage's Streets, DT's
Awake (I know iknow, I should have gotten that long long ago, but I'm
poor,) and Tony Macalpine's Edges of Insanity. Here's what I think. I
always loved Macalpine's albom. It's wonderful, but not as good as his
later stuff. Awake is godly. I love Erotomania. Tage? Hmm... Well,
the musicians have a fare amount of talent. I wasn't blown away. I wish
the vocalist wouldn't growl quite so much. He has a beautiful clear
voice. And my god, talk about accents. Can you say east-coast? It's a
good disc, though, and I'm glad I got it. Not quite what I expected,
which is pretty much prog stuff. I love the keyboard though. Very
beautiful piano playing. Not shred, but I think it's growing on me.
    Thanks, people. Be well.

For a soon-to-be 18-year-old (but not soon enough) like me, these dire
stories of turnaways at the door are quite alarming. So far, I've heard
about 4 different *definitive* answers to the question: will they be
carding at Birch Hill? I've heard everything from "no carding, unless
drinks are wanted" to "you will be turned away, no question about it".
Please, somebody (or multiple somebodies) clear this up for me.

    Hiyis

I'm thinking of creating a DT homepage of my very own.

Before you say anything, yes, I know that every man (and woman) and his (and her) proverbial dog has one, but seeing as I'm not one to avoid jumping on the bandwagon I thought I'd try it out as well.

I'd like any suggestions on what to have on it. No offence to everyone who has DT pages of their own, but a lot of them seem to be pretty much alike with one or two rare exceptions, and I was wondering if there was anything different that you'd like to see. Anything you want to be able to see? anything you'd like to download?

Please let me know via private email, I'm really interested in starting a page but I want it to stand apart from the rest.

    Thanks!

    Hi there!

I've been reading the list on and off for a year or so and I have an unanswered question on my mind concerning the live performances James Labrie gave on LATM a ACOS.

I own a few bootlegs (WDATU, Wake Up and Tragedy/Comedy) featuring Labrie as lead signer. I must say that I am VERY disapointed by his performances, especially with I&W and earlier stuff. It seems to me that for Awake, he tried to stay within the range his voice would allow in a live performance and that gave a much more "acceptable" product for the "Waking Up the World" tour. Every live version of Another Day I have is just to horrible to listen to, even if it was only for the musical performances of the other members. Now, I am not trying to bash the guy but let's face it, in the studio, he can really sing but on the stage, that's another story.

You (almost) would'nt know it from LATM and ACOS though. Except for Pull Me Under on LATM, his singing is pretty clean. So, that brings my question up. There must have been overdubs for these albums. Does anybody here have any info on that?

I for one sure hopes this situation will improve for the next tour...

    Just wondering,

    Basic Rules:

There are some basic rules to the jam which make everyone's reading alot more pleasant. Please try and follow them as closely as possible. I will send out warnings to people who blatantly disobey these. You get one warning, a second offense will get your jam priviledges taken away.

    1. Do not post just for the sake of posting. There is already a lot of valid traffic on this list, we don't need unnecessary posts which are a waste of everyone's time. The basic rule you should all try to follow is to think before you post.

    2. No Top Ten (Five, Twenty, Thirty, etc) lists. These lists are a waste. They take up alot of bandwidth and fill up everyone's mailbox much faster than they would like it filled up. If you want to know everyone's top somethings, please ask for ALL responses to be mailed directly to you. This has been done with the end results posted to the jam and it was very very nice.

    3. Do not start / participate in / complain about long off-topic discussions. These have gotten WAY out of hand in the past. If one starts, I will post once saying to stop and take it to private email, anyone continuing the discussion will recieve a warning. These include such topics as God, NIN, Blind Melon, bands selling out, etc.

    4. Private E-Mail is a wonderful thing. Use it when you think it may be more useful than posting to the jam.

    5. Last, but not least, this is YOUR ytsejam. I am around, and I do administrative work, but I do not say what can/cannot be talked about (most of the time) or moderate in any real way. I am the Ytsejam Administrator more than Moderator. Don't complain if the jam seems to be going downhill, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Basically, that is all the basic info. As always, if you have any problems feel free to mail me. I get ALOT of mail on a daily basis, so it sometimes takes me a while to get back to you, but 99% of the time, I will get back to you eventually.

Thanks for Reading and Enjoy the List!!!

Heh? See I told you I can get better sounds farting in a toilet! My toilet must be bigger and get a fuller, deeper snare or something. :)

Actually, the song is starting to grow on me. I wonder if DT, however, would actually try to cover a Rush song after what happened before. Anyway, I'd rather still see DT play just DT songs. There songs are so freakin long that they can't get enough of em in at one concert. Can't wait!

Heheh, the album must be Aqua, then. This is my fave of the Asia albums. As with Al Pitrelli, you have heard him mentioned on the jam as he plays in a "fun" band with Derek Sherinian calle Ethyl Mertz. I guess he wasn't proud of his work with Asia which is a disappointment to me, cuz i really love it. He's played for Savatage on the last two albums and played the guitars on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra side-project. He also played with Dee Snider in Widowmaker, I believe. He's a great guitar player and deserves more recognition methinks. There's the beans on him anyway. :)
