These guys certainly all have the technical ability (probably more in some
cases) to do DT songs justice but it would be interesting to see
if they have the "Balls and chunk" attitude to pull them off correctly.

Guitar : Frank Gambale (blazing fast speed picker)
Bass : John Pattituci (no, I didn't just misspell Petrucci!)
Keys : Chick Corea (no, he's NOT a chick)
Drums : Dave Weckl (drum god of all times - nobody can touch him)
    Vocals : Devin Townsend!!!!!!!!!!!

The answer to that question is:

    1. Because the show was "An Evening With Rush" there was A LOT of Rush. They had (at some places due to state codes and capacity laws) to shorten the set list. The set list was alternating, all songs were played except "Resist" and "Time and Motion" they alternated the songs each night. Just because of time constraints.

    2. Because Neil will become the most tired member of the band first they ask him how tired he is at the break, if he can take a lot more they will play "Resist" (because he has to play the hammer dulcimer). If he is really tired he plays "Time and Motion"

So thems the facts. If you have any other comments hit me by e mail. I like to try to keep the jam alive with DTC. If you know what I mean? Later, J

Sorry for the lack of DT content in this post but.......

I just Bought Jason Becker's Perspective last night. Stunning.........every second of this CD is absolutely stunning. My girlfriend told me that I looked like a deer shocked by bright car headlights. ( I sure FELT that way!) Have you ever HEARD something so moving and beautiful that it made you cry? This thing was so powerful that it (to my own disbelief !!) actually caused a non-feeling tough guy (me) to actually shed tears ! ( "higher".......those of you who have it, know what I mean.) Its amazing to me that a (young) man at Death's door could make music so full of life !!

Suddenly I feel very stupid. All my daily little trivial complaints in life are nothing !! It makes me feel happy just to be ALIVE and ACTIVE !

Thank you Jason for making me realize this. In one night you have successfully changed "my" perspective. This CD will be one of my most Treasured pieces of artwork.

    * R.I.P. *

I'm not quite sure why I wrote this, I guess " YTSEJAMMERS" are the only people I know that could understand this feeling.

To clarify this a bit...in a recent DETAILS Magazine (like last month if I recall correctly) it has an article about Metallica and starts out talking about how the person writing the article was repulsed when a young European fan asked Lars for a kiss on the cheek...Lars said he would not kiss the kid, but instead would kiss Kirk...Lars then deep throated Kirk (THIS IS NO LIE!!!) and said something to the effect of "Hey...it's the ninties...change is good" or something lie that. I believe it was the details magazine that has Chris Cornell <sp?> of Soundgarden on the cover. All I hafta say is...that would definetly lead me to believe that the two of them are at least Bi or something.

Well, I'm back. I had more free time but limited Internet access (i.e. too lazy to go to the computer lab) last semester, so I wasn't reading the 'Jam much. Now I have less free time but increased Internet access, so go figure.

    >If you had to pick five musicians from any style of music to perform a concert of Dream Theater covers, who would they be?

Vocals: Corey Glover Backing Vocals: Doug Pinnick, Jerry Gaskill, Ty Tabor Guitar: Vernon Reid Bass: Tony Levin (and Stick, too) Keyboards: David Sancious Drums: Vinnie Colaiuta Concert Stage and Lighting: the crew for Rush Roadie: Me

    >but can you think of another musician this decade who has had so much >influence on the music industry?

Maybe Hootie and the Blowfish. Hootie had good sales of an album they distributed themselves before they were signed to Atlantic. Also, they had good sales of their own merchandising, which they took care of themselves. Hootie helped began the popularity of "roots rock", bands like Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, etc. (not that these bands weren't popular in their own right, but Hootie became a huge success, opening doors. They also made it possible for a black lead singer to be in a successful rock band, breaking down barriers, which I am always a fan of. Don't get me wrong, I'm no huge Hootie fan, just providing an observation.

    > need I remind you what album came out in 1990 that kicked the worlds >ass...Megadeth's Rust In Peace and Judas Priest's Painkiller. Now, those >2 bands set the stage for these freaks to come and play. More influece >came from them than Nirvanna. The only thing Nirvanna had more of was >commercial appeal, then again, if you compare the ticket sales of The >Clash Of the Titans tour, to the Nirvanna tours, I'd say the Titans tour >raked in ALOT more.

How did Megadeth and Judas Priest "set the stage" for Nirvana? The only correlation I can see is that people were becoming tired of heavy metal and wanted something new, that was rawer, simpler and more accessible: grunge. I'll have to disagree that the two bands had more influence than Nirvana. When I turn on the radio, I'll still hear Nirvana instead of say, "Hangar 18". Grunge's repercussions are also evident in the musical instrument industry. It made retro-looking instruments "cool" again, changing priorities from things like intonation and electronics to cosmetics and simplicity. Thus, style became more important than substance. People are buying more Fender Jaguars and Jazzmasters than Jackson Flying V's or Kellys. Finally, as far as ticket sales go, you need to take certain things into account. The Titans tour may have raked in more, but it had 3 bands (4 if you count Alice In Chains, I think) and played large indoor arenas. Nirvana's tour only had itself and was mid-sized arenas, and clubs in the beginning. So you are correct, but to quote Obi-Wan Kenobi: "from a certain point of view".

    >but I'd love to hear Hetfield scream "DON'T TEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLL >MEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!! YA WANTED MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!"

Agreed. And I'd love to hear Jason Newsted screaming backing vocals.

    >>I DID like Smells like Teen Spirit, in fact, I had to learn it for Pep >>Rallies with the band. > > This is when you know it's not "Alternative" anymore.

I remember seeing/hearing a marching band do Guns 'N Roses "You Could Be Mine" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman" once. Are these bands not hard rock and heavy metal anymore? Popularity doesn't change a band's legitimacy or style, only the bands themselves.

    Sincerely, G. Jack Thetgyi

Hey all... I can't believe some of the ignorance I've seen on the 'jam lately.

My DT cover band would be:

Rob Dickinson (Catherine Wheel): vocals, rhythm guitar (He has such an awesome voice, and comes the closest to having the range of LaBrie. A decent guitarist, but not great.

Steve DiGiorgio (ex-Death), or Paul Chambers (ex-Miles Davis/John Coltrane): bass (if you're a bassist, do yourself a favor and check these guys out!)

Gene Hoglan (Death) or Neil Peart: drums (same goes for Hoglan)

Kirk Hammett or Eddie Van Halen: lead guitar McCoy Tyner (ex-John Coltrane): keyboards, even though I'm not sure he could play the keys; he damn sure can play the guitar

I am salivating just thinking about these guys playing together.

HaHaHa, i cant believe one would think that Jaymz and Lars would be that closed minded to boot someone if they are gay, lets be a little realistic, mustaine got booted for his horroific drug abuse and Kirk won the spot based on talent and merit alone, i highly doubt that Jaymz and Lars would boot him if he chose to live an alternative lifestyle, i mean come on look at them they are high on the hog right now, and any member changes would totally screw them up, and by the way Kirk isnt gay.

This CD made me feel the same way, too, after I bought it. It still does. BTW, Jason's still alive and doing well for his condition last I heard. This is one of the most moveing albums I have heard in a long time. I recommend it to anyone who has a flair for instrumental music.

This letter can be written in response to any individuals who defend alternative "music", if that's what you want to call it, and accuse bands like Dream Theater (that right, THEATER, not THEATRE - gotta be anal here, because Petrucci wants the spelling to be known correctly!) of being "show-offs". Yes, Jon Dery, I think you were just kidding, but just in case anyone needs to flame an alternative fan, here you go:

--------------------------------------- An ODE to Alternative vs. DREAM THEATER ---------------------------------------

This relatively new classification of bands as "alternative" makes me rather ill. As a matter of fact, I seem to have a mild urge to vomit right now thinking about it. These basement bands, which don't deserve to leave that territory, use words like alternative and feeling to try to describe artistically a lack of musical talent and song writing ability. It is SO disheartening to see extremely talented musicians, such as Nuno Bettencourt, be criticized for exploring new realms of composition and styles. Dream Theater is the same way. They play a few songs which shred and are difficult to play, let alone compose. But most of their MUSIC (not grunge, and ill-defined guitar notes, such as in alternative "attempted music") can be described by one word: variety. They don't play just metal; they don't perform just pop; and they don't compose just progressive. They're well-rounded, educated, and curious musicians, exploring different ideas and territories. Unfortunately, it takes well-trained and well-rehearsed bands to achieve this level, and many "bands" now-a-days are just not willing to put forth the time and effort to reach this level, since they realize that it doesn't take talent to make money today.......(sigh)

So many new grunge and alternative bands have one sound, which is similar to most other "bands" of this classification, and the "feeling" is all that people relate to, because you cannot relate to the "music", for their likely is none!

DREAM THEATER has the right to be proud of their music, for they've obviously worked very hard at it! If someone excels at a particular job or career, why must they be accused of "showing off"!?!? If the talent, and especially the desire and motivational drive are there, why not give it your best, for the benefit and satisfaction of yourself and others?

There is no reason why ANYONE should have to settle for second, third, fourth, or 1000th best (in the case of alternative "music" - and hip-hop dance tracks, too for that matter!) of what they're capable of, given their current situation in life. The best for one person might be 100th best for another person, but all that matters is that we're giving it our best shot - just like DREAM THEATER!!

What a motivational band they are!!

OK - I'm off my soapbox now! FLAME AWAY!!

    Jon "Justin" Case

    Hey:

I thought things like sexual orientation and religion were not to be discussed on this jam! Save the space here for MUSIC!

Let people screw whoever they want to - that's their OWN business in their OWN time. If you want to take sex, religion, etc., either go to a church, temple, or whatever, or else e-mail eachother personally. But we don't need to clutter up the YTSEjam with this nonsense!

It just makes for MORE posts which I hardly have the time to read entirely, and I won't read 'em if they're filled with stuff I don't care to read here.......

Don't worry - I'll be in a better spirit in my next post!

    Finally,

How many people have the "Bridge" single CD by Queensryche? Does that kick ass or what!? I LOVE the full-band rendition of Someone Else. They should've put that on "promised land". Anyway, this QR comment is perhaps real old (cause I've had this CD for months), but I just wanted to change the subject and leave on a good note (pun intended....)

Why the hell would DT need a tribute band?? I mean, I can understand a tribute band for a band like KISS or Van Halen who have been around FOREVER, but DT is still young and on the rise (or at least I would like to think so)!!

In light of this, I think the only people who could truly fill DT's shoes are:

Guitar: Ritchie Kotzen (Check out "The Intergalactic Fusion Experience") or John McLaughlin Bass: Stu Hamm Keys: Tony McAlpine or Eddie Van Halen (both could double on guitar and do an occasional guitar solo as well) Drums: Simon Phillips, Dave Lombardo, or Kirk Covington (of Scott Henderson's Tribal Tech) Vocals: JON BON JOVI!
