    I went back to listen to Streets again and well... Jon Oliva's voice just
    doesn't do it for me. Sure his voice is tolerable and the music is
    excellent but I prefer Zachary. Just my opinion...

    I think Skadz needs to take charge and end this homo thread that is going
    on endlessly...

    The best Tribal Tech is _Illicit_ which has some intense and rocking songs.
    The other CD I have _Reality Check_ is a good one too. Some of their songs
    are more mellow, but some of it really rocks.

    Gary Willis has a solo album out called _No Sweat_. If anyone has this
    album, let me know what you think of it.

    I just want to echo Buster's comments from a few 'jams ago about the
    nit-picking on James LaBrie.

    I think James is one of, if not the, best vocalist in rock music today,
    period.

    I have heard a lot of singers come and go. I worked as a rock DJ from
    '84-'91, and was even the Music Director at the college radio station I
    worked at (KBHU-FM, Black Hills State, Spearfish, SD) for two years,
    longer than anyone in that station's history. One of my jobs was to
    time out the intro's for ramps (talking over the music before the vocals
    start) and note how the songs ended. I had to do this for EVERY song on
    EVERY record the station put on-the-air. (we didn't do country, thank
    God). Needless to say, I have heard A LOT OF MUSIC.

    Dream Theater just blew me away the first time I heard them, and I went
    out and bought every CD from them I could find, including some of Mike
    Bahr's CDs. I have never done that with any other band I have heard.
    And the vocal work of James is a big reason why.

    James, if you do read this, let me just say, "keep up the good work!" I
    am behind you 100%.

    Perspective is much different that his earlier release "Perpetual Burn".
    Due to his condition he has elevated his song writing to a new level.
    The music is still very intense. He uses vocalists from time to time as the
    lead instrumement. This album does stir up tremendous emotion
    and will put things into perspective. Just turn out the lights, lay down
    on your bed, stare at the ceiling and crank the CD... you we be in for a
    hell of a journey!!!

    BTW: I am listening to it right now!!!
    My favorite song has to be Serrana.

    I'm not sure if the band, 'Spiral Architect' has been brought up before on
    the Jam, but I just thought I'd mention them anyway...I picked up their
    demo about a month ago, and it is simply incredible. Anyone who is into
    highly technical metal will love it. I can't seem to locate the address to
    order it, but you can contact their drummer at the following email addr:
    asgeir@ogilvy.no It's a 15 minute cassette containing two tracks, and
    well worth the $5 (US). No...not an ad...I just think these guys deserve
    some recognition, especially since they are currently shopping for a label.

            I would like to thank whoever posted the Metal Edge article on DT in
    the Ytsejam. It was very informative.

            This article excites me even more for their new cd. One sentence
    excited me the most. It mentioned how DT is taking a more "Song by song"
    approach where they play as a band for one song, rather instrument by
    instrument for the whole album, to create a vibe and a more personal song.
            YES!
            This is EXACTLY what I wanted to hear! Although I&W and Awake are
    my favorite albums of all time, this is the one aspect that was missing. I
    am bothered by the process of breaking up each instrument and just pasting
    them together. The result is the sound of many DT songs that sound like 5
    instruments going at it, rather than one cohesive whole.
            Because of this segregated sound, many DT-bashers have decided that
    the music is un-emotional. Of course that is bullshit, however they have a
    point. When I listen to DT, I am shocked by the proficiency of the
    musicians, but the SONG does not completely take hold of me AS MUCH as a
    band such as Marillion (a band that really works together emotionally)

            I hope that made sense, it is not a bash on old DT. It is just me
    looking forward to the new cd. :)

    p.s. I've been listening to Genesis' "Trick of the Tail". Is it just me,
    or does the chorus of "Robbery, Assault, and Battery" sound disgustingly
    similar to the putrid song "Ebony and Ivory, go together in perfect
    harmony." ? :)

    PST local cable, 1 hr, benefit for fighting domestic violence, if I
    remember, *featuring Tori Amos*

    I heard this band called *Majesty*, I think they'd do an excellent job as a
    Dream T cover band.

    Vox: Ian Gillan (the original screamer, good range, excellent vox control)
    Axe: Jeff Beck (some people forget how good this axe slayer is)
    Bas: Chris Squire (especially the unique Rickenbacher sound)
    Key: Jan Hammer (got the speed licks ala Mahavishnu Orchestra)
    Rox: Carl Palmer (favorite drum & percussion solos, IMHO)

    BTW, what is the current status of the upcoming Majesty CD's? I sent my $$
    for the "next two", and so far not heard a word. I understand that the
    covers CD has been cancelled. A pointer to the most recent relevant Mike
    Bahr FAQ will suffice. (no phlegms, just a Matter of Time.) Thanks.

    Er, which CD? There's lots of Steve Morse and Steve Morse Band CDs out
    there. "Structural Damage," "Stressfest," "High Tension Wires," "Coast to
    Coast," "Southern Steel"... the list goes on.

    It's difficult to say exactly what makes this CD so special. The songs are
    just so powerful that nearly every one awakens an emotion in almost everyone
    who listens to the disc. I've converted a number of people who don't even
    listen to instrumental music most of the time.

    "Primal," for example, is a pounding song with tribal drumbeats and a great
    keys track that runs through the entire song. Periodically there are bursts
    of searing guitar sound. Very primal -- takes you back to the days of the
    cavemen. Nice female vocals, and Steve Perry provides some vocals too. No
    lyrics though, just singing.

    "Rain" is a more introspective track but still excellent.

    "Higher" is a cool piece with several members of Voicestra providing vocal
    music to sing the song. No words, just vocals. Very different and very
    interesting.

    "The End of the Beginning" is unquestionably the best song on the disc. One
    of the best instrumental pieces of music I've ever heard -- hell, one of the
    best songs, period. It's got orchestra, beautiful guitar playing from
    Michael Lee Firkins, and even some progressive overtones. Lovely melody and
    powerful emotions -- this is the one that'll likely move you to tears.

    "Empire" is a nice piece with flute intro and a very Oriental feel to it.

    "Blue," if I'm not mistaken (I don't have the CD handy so I can't check the
    liner notes) was recorded by Jason when his disease hadn't progressed very
    far yet. It was more or less a straightforward recording but it's still
    guitar playing beyond most people's abilities.

    "Life and Death" -- well, you can tell what was on Jason's mind when he
    wrote this. Another very strong track.

    "Serrana" is a keyboard-heavy piece, very quick moving. Not written for his
    girlfriend Serrana, but it's a pretty song and it fits her (as he says) so
    he named it for her.

    "Meet Me in the Morning", a cover of a Dylan tune (I think -- not a big
    Dylan fan) is a song typifying everything about the album that Jason wanted
    to say when he released it: it's about being optimistic, never giving up,
    living life to its fullest. The singing is strictly okay but the playing is
    excellent.

    Pick this disc up immediately. You will be very glad you did. Jason is the
    eternal optimist, and this CD moves me like few others have. Beautiful,
    triumphant, powerful -- there's a point beyond which simple adjectives cease
    to have meaning. Suffice it to say that this is a great album, and it may
    move you to tears as well.

    I was just wondering, since Jason Becker's CDs have come up for discussion
    several times, if anybody else has either of the Cacophony cds.

    Three or four years ago I went into a local used record shop and happened
    to find _Speed Metal Symphony_. I am also a fan of Megadeth and Marty
    Friedman's guitar work with them so I picked up the cd. Overall, I don't
    care for the style of the songs, but the guitar work on Speed Metal Symphony
    is phenomenal. Both Marty Friedman and Jason Becker show off their incredible
    talent as guitarists, especially on "Concerto" and "Speed Metal Symphony."

    I don't have Cacophony's cd _Go Off!_ and would like to hear from someone
    who might have it whether they like it and if they would recommend it.

    To the guy who wrote that: Duh. I'm glad to see that we've all lost our sense of humor in here. Can't say I don't understand why, cuz I do. BTW, the more you write that a thread should go away, THE MORE IT STAYS AROUND. Bought Handful of Rain, and I must say I am slightly disappointed. That is not at all to say that I do not like the album. First I didn't realize that Caffery and Pitrelli were not on this album, so my first disappointment was adjusting to a new guitarist. Whoever did the leads on DWD (Pitrelli?) has an amazing ear for melodic metal soloing, something that is so hard to find, especially with the glut of talented players today in general. A question on Alex Skolnick: I've been hearing this guy's name for years, but never heard anything of his (Testament, Exhibit A, etc.). My question is: what's the fuss? The guy is good, but his solos seem a little derivative and his rhythms are pretty standard. (Just to let you know: I speak of Jason of Saigon Kick in the same light, and SK is one of my top five bands. Please don't flame me on this, give me your opinions.) This is not to say he's bad, but is his other work better? I really am curious. Second disappointment: I'm trying to get used to Zach's continuous growling. His singing voice is awesome, why do the growl thing? But, beyond this, I do like the album. Mainly because I have been so starved for decent metal in the wake of this *alternative revolution* that it's good to find GREAT metal, not just decent. My next point: For those of you debating alternative music and how much it sucks, keep in mind that bands do not assign categories to themselves. Case in point: Rush is in the heavy metal section of most mail order music catalogs; I still get a kick out of that. I listened to alternative music in high school (seven years ago), back before the category was bastardized into what it is today. Back then, bands like the Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction WERE alternative. Listen to the albums Mother's Milk and Ritual de lo Habitual and try and classify them. That's what used to make alternative. Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains are AOR music. Alice used to be metal, but neither have ever been alternative. As for Nirvana, the guy who said they came out in 1994 is WAY off base. When I flip over my friend's copy of Bleach, the release year is 1989. Nevermind: 1991. I sold these CDs back a long time ago, but the unfortunate point remains, I bought them in the first place. Hence Nirvana influenced me. What they influenced me to do is find real thrash though, not their poor (IMHO) substitute. Bands like Fear, Misfits, Iggy and the Stooges, even the new MD.45 CD are what thrash really is and was, long before Nirvana hit the scene. No one ever mentions the influence of these bands. Why? They were revolutionaries, and no one likes REAL revolutionaries. That's the same reason no one (meaning radio and critics) liked Metallica, Megadeth, Yes, and Rush in the beginning and the reason no one likes Dream Theater, Queensryche, and Savatage now. The people who like these bands are people who are willing to listen as bands grow and adapt, not to the industry, but to each other. Name me five bands you hear on radio today who do that. One word says it all: MONEY. If a band changes, they may not sell records or get airplay. Record companies don't like that kind of change. I'll never blame a band for wanting to make money, they earn it with talent for the most part. But I'll always hate the record companies for making money such a priority when they make so much of it anyway. So there's my two pennies for ya. As for the guy who wrote this:
