Hello all! All during my winter break I've tried to buy some of Jason's cd's.
Unfortunately I can't find ANYTHING. I've been to circuit city,
Strawberries, Record Town, everywhere (just about). Anyways, can anyone
enlighten me on where to locate these cd's. Thanks a lot.

    Hi all!

I am disapointed to see that with my first post to this jam,
I have managed to play on a sensitive issue. One wich was not really
intended. I feel I might have to make a few clarifications here...

I for one have never had the great opportunity to see a live
performance from DT. That will be remedied as soon as the next tour
starts. So, my only base for judging the live performance of this band,
wich I consider to be the absolute best I've ever heard, are the
recorded shows available on either official "live" releases of the band
or bootlegs. Between these two means, I observed a discrepancy that
raised a question in my mind, question that I thought worth asking on
the jam. It seemed to me that James' signing was so much better on
"official" live albums that these albums MIGHT have been overdubbed.
THAT was my simple question; "Has there been any know overdubs on LATM
    and ACOS?" (c.f. jam #2203).

As it turns out, there are reasons other than overdubbing wich
can explain the differences I heard. Many jammers have replied to me
both by private E-Mail and on the jams with their their opinions on
this and one thing is clear; Labrie's studio performances are
outstanding. He has a really great voice and to sing the way he does
must be really hard physically. I have also had replies telling me of
shows in wich he sang to perfection. So, one might not have to expect
perfect signing at every show. My problem is I do not own any bootleg on
wich he has sang to my expectations. However, that does not prevent me
from truly appreciating the band and their signer. I am not a signer nor
do I pretend I could do better but one does not have to be a musician to
appreciate, and have an opinion on, music.

I had no reason to go on a Labrie bashing spree and that is not what I
did. Not at all. In fact, I seem to remember such a thread a year or so
ago, arguing of Dominici's and Labrie's qualties as signers.

To set the record straight on my opinions on this matter, I will
say that I think that Labrie's singing on studio albums is absolutely
exquisite. I have yet to hear a truly good live performance but I now
know that they exist (thanks to the jam). I am still in the dark as
to wether or not there was overdubbing on LATM and ACOS and that
question might stay forever unanswered but I still felt it worth asking.

SO, that's that. The question was about overdubing and NOT
about Labrie's signing abilities. Hope nobody was overly and unduely
    offended....

    Take care,
    Steve

    Hey there,

Jon Finn is the man! No H in his name by the way :) His group (Jon Finn
Group) has one cd called, "Don't Look So Serious" on Legato records. It's
pretty easy to find at most big stores. He's truly a teacher when it comes
to guitar. He can play any style and emulate any player. He's almost got too
many chops. His group mixes all types of music in a rock context, much like
DT except all instrumental. Tons of chops, however there's also a good
humorous aspect and lots of funky stuff to keep things fresh and down to
earth. All members of the band are professors at Berklee which is a definite
bonus. ANYBODY who is a DT fan should pick up this cd. Tons of variety and
DT-ish chops along with great melodic content. Even if you don't like
    instrumental stuff, get it.

You know, the only time I have problems with christian bands is when they
make shoving a message down your throat more important than making good
music. Heck, there have been cases where I heard stuff, loved it and later
found out it was a christian band - like the Galactic cowboys. (I found
them on a christian band list at http://www.m8.com/christian/). No matter
what their religious views, being a great musician is what is important for
    the music I listen to.

Jon is an incredible guitarist. I caught him and his band while I
was at Berklee this summer and they blew me away! There music is very
technical and very impressive. Jon is a really cool guy as were the other
two guys in his band, they all came and talked to the crowd after the show.
I believe they have one album out and I think it is called don't look so
serious. I did not know Dream Theater played at Berklee to open the awake
tour, that must have been incredible. I had the chance to play on the BPC
stage and the place is just awesome. Hopefully I will be able to catch them
there someday. Well enogh of my ramblings...Hope this helps.

Go Off is by far the better of the two albums. Better solos, better
songs, better rhythms and better drumming. It's a MUST HAVE. :) Of
    course that's just my opinion.

    According to the Webster's Dictionary:

    1. fag.ot or fag.got \'fag-*t\ n [ME fagot, fr. MF] : BUNDLE : as : a
bundle of sticks : a bundle of pieces of wrought iron to be shaped by
rolling or hammering at high temperature

    2. fagot or faggot vt 1: to make a fagot of 2: to bind in a fagot

    1. fag \'fag\ vb or fagged; or fag.ging [obs. fag to droop, perh. fr. fag
(fag end)] 1: to work hard : DRUDGE 2: to act as a fag : to tire by
    strenuous activity : EXHAUST

    2. fag n chiefly Brit 1: TOIL, DRUDGERY 2a: an English public-school boy
who acts as servant to another 2b: MENIAL, DRUDGE

    3. fag n [fag end] : CIGARETTE

can we end this now? The people who brought this up did not mean "tired",
"Servant", "Bundle of kindling", "Iron", or "cigarette". It's over. Let
    it die. Please.

    Greetings,
While preparing for my radio show tomorrow, I listened to many alboms
brought up here. Here are my findings. Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven
Keys 1-2" are not all that interesting. I now know where Geoff Tait comes
from, but it is obvious to me that Helloween Is influenced by Iron Maiden
and not much else. Sure, there's some good shredding, but it sounds all
the same to me. Nitro's OFR is the model of glam shred-metal. Though I
admire Michael Angelo to no end, he doesn't know how to make a melody
shine. The one accoustically-introduced song was good, though. I could
never be as technically profficient as Angelo, no one could, but he just
doesn't know when to breathe. "Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" from Maiden
is awsome, too. I like it better than most of their stuff. Last, I just
couldn't find "Play With Me" on Extreme's self-titled release. The albom
is awsome and Nuno is moreso, but I want my song. I might have skeppid it
in my rush through the record, but I don't think so. Looks like it's
gonna be a good show tomorrow. Erotomania will be the featured guitar
    instrumental. Be well.

Well, as nice as that would be, it'd be difficult to do, and even more
difficult to convince the engineers, producer, etc., to do that. The only
kinds of music that are recorded all together are orchestras, live
recordings (duh), and jazz/improvised music (because a lot of that relies on
band members giving each other visual cues as to what's going on). Recording
instruments separately for all other kinds of music has become and industry
standard for two reasons: it's easier, and it makes a cleaner recording.
Recording everyone one-at-a-time makes it easy to do retakes and punch-ins.
Each part is recorded on a separate track (or several) and can be modified
once the recording is done (ie run thru signal processors). If everything is
recorded at the same time, when one person screws up, everyone has to do it
again. And again. And again! That's because of microphone bleed. If everyone
is playing together in the same room , the vocalist's microphone is going to
pick up the drums, the drum mics are going to pick up the guitarist's amp,
etc., etc. It causes a lot less stress to do everything separately. Mixing
down is a big part of what comes out to the public...there's a technique of
creating "space" between instruments which probably causes the separation
you don't like. Perhaps, with the new producer, that'll change. :)

still like them, but perhaps I would be more frightened about them
    devouring my flesh
    than I am now.

Neither of their albums are still available, unfortunately. My brother and
I have been looking for them for a long time, and have found that they are
only available used, and are therefore quite hard to find.

hey, what's up everyone. It's been a long time since i've posted, or even
    read the jam.
this past saturday, the 18th, my band had a big gig at this place called
the black orchid. We had the 2ND BIGGEST DRAW that the club has ever had.
    (that's the personal gratification part)
but anyway, before we went on, JR, the lead singer, gave a us a little talk
which really impacted me and i think would be good to share with y'all.
the gist of it is that music is a spiritual thing, not a competition.
we're not going out there to blow away the other bands or to show them up,
we're there to share music with the audience. music is the only truly
spiritual thing which humans have control over; it is not physical at all,
but purely spiritual; it's the one thing we have in common with God or any
other supreme being. You have to let go of just playing your instrument,
plucking the strings or hitting the drums. you have to let the music take
over, let it flow through your body, let it control your movements and your
    actions.

basically, music is the shit and a bag of chips!

BTW, any San Antonio Jammers interested in hearing our band perform, we're
gonna be at Rock Island on Jan. 29, the White Rabbit Feb. 11, and the Black
    Orchid again on March 1.

    >I know if I was James, I would secretly read this list from time
    >to time, and it would be very dis-heartening to sit here and watch
    >my own fans tear me up like Siskel and Ebert or something. I would
    >get on stage and think "gee, how many jammers are out in the audience
    >tonight waiting for me to fuck up so they can post about it on our
    >mailing list".

I was watching the PPV from Japan. James did a wonderful job, IMO,
and I can't wait to see him live. All this crap about him screwing
up wears on me as well. Everyone here should be thankful that Dream
Theater picked him instead of, oh, say, Devin Townsend. (This guy
really sucks, I picked up Vai's S&R today, bleah!)

As I've said before, the point of seeing a band live is to have fun,
not to pick out the mistakes they make. Some people know what kind
of stigma it imposes when you try to sing in front of 50,000 people.
Singing alone in the studio is nothing compared to that. Lay off the
guy, he's great and your freakin jealous cuz your pets run in terror
when you open your mouths. :)

    >I seem to remember seeing a column in one of the guitar magazines
    >(Guitar World, Guitar, Guitar School,...etc.) written by John Petrucci
    >and was just wondering if my memory serves me right and if it does,
    >which magazine is this?

Yeah, this is his Wild Stringdom column in Guitar World mag. You can
access the guitar world arcives at

    http://www.guitarworld.com/dec96/lessons/menu/le.menu.html

I haven't paid attention to guitar mags for the last year or so and
it appears that Eric Johnson has taken over this column. (Is this
temporary? This sucks, as much as I like EJ, I'd prefer lessons from
JP) Poke around and there may be old lessons from JP.
