O Back to your regular scheduled DT station.
Well...... I don't think the original person was referring to Kirk as a
    cigarette. Do you?

---NO--- but then again, an original thread oft changes colors as it is
    being woven. 'nuf said-Yup!!!

.On Tori Amos on Lifetime this Friday, Jan25-TV Guide confirms, on at 9pm
PST local cable, 1 hr, benefit for fighting domestic violence (another
    oxymoron), if I
    remember, *featuring Tori Amos
    *
.. On DT cover bands: I heard this band called *Majesty*, I think they'd
do an excellent job as a Dream T cover band...
Vox: Ian Gillan (the original screamer, good range, excellent vox control)
Axe: Jeff Beck (some people forget how good this axe slayer is)
Dub: Chris Squire (especially his infamous Rickenbacher sound)
Ski: Jan Hammer (got the speed licks ala Mahavishnu Orchestra)
Rox: Carl Palmer (favorite drum & percussion solos, IMHO)

..Something different, you can't necessarily choose your favorites; need
mux who can gel & and swell a DT sound.

BTW, what is the current status of the upcoming Majesty CD's? I sent my $$
for the "next two", and so far not heard a word. I understand that the
covers CD has been cancelled. A pointer to the most recent relevant Mike
Bahr FAQ will suffice. (no phlegms, just a Matter of Time...&$$.) Thanks.
Just got Angra, Holy Land...pretty awesome, only flaw: reduce the thump
that coincides with the speed metal: tends to overshadow the fantastic
guitar licks at times. The excellent acoustic guitar shines on the bonus
CD (for those of you who have this package).

    Hello,
Wanna hear something funny? When I bought TSO and Dead Winter
Dead (at the same time) I was curious to hear one of the songs because
they had put the time signature in the title. When I listened to it, it
wasn't in 12/24. DOH! You can guess my embarrassment when a WEEK later, I
finally realized that Sarajevo 12/24 refers to the date of Xmas Eve.
Thought I'd share that now that I'm over myself. If you don't own it
already: buy Dead Winter Dead. Words of a DT fan who never thought he'd
    find anything close.
I see the Devin-haters club has reconvened... I like Townsend's
vocals both on Vai's Sex & Religion and on the WM Tribute. So the guy is
expressive and screams some, do people hate Mike Patton of Faith No More
for that reason? Besides, his singing fits so well into songs like
Survive, Sex & Religion, and Deep Down in the Pain. I'd recommend this
album before Alien Love Secrets. I just thought ALS lacked good
songwriting, with the exception of Juice. YA YO GAK is just annoying.
That being said: if you do not own Passion and Warfare, and you
are a fan of good guitar work, you are missing the boat. This is the
premier guitar album of the last decade (Surfing with the Alien was 1985,
right?). Vai is amazing. The songs are well written and the album flows
from one track to the next. It is by far a better album than ALS, S&R, or
    Fire Garden.
All that aside, HAPPY TUESDAY EVERYONE!!!!!!

    Andrew

    'Sup Jammers,

I just got word from my friend this morning that monster guitar
shredder SHAWN LANE will be playing a FREE (!!!!) show with Jonas
Helborg (and the rest of the band) at the WETLANDS tonight Tuesday
    1/21/97 at around 9:00pm.
The address is 161 Hudson St. (one block south of the Holland tunnel)
and the phone number is (212) 966-4225.
This should be a fuckin' sick show..I NEED a show like this SO
BAD...last cool shows around here were MANOWAR, RUSH, and MERCYFUL
FATE. I missed him on New Years Eve when he did a gig at Tramps in
Chelsea and I'm NOT gonna miss this one..especially since the place will
probably be deserted since he's going on at 9:00 and I havent heard a
word of this ANYWHERE..its gonna be a great night for video bootlegs..my
friend is bringing his palmcorder and we KNOW where to film when the
solo starts. Don't you just hate it when the damn camera gets a
wonderful shot of the lighting rig just as the guy is shredding away.
Anyhow...hope some serious minded NYC musicians can read this in time!

*** Here are some other noodlings that I've some responses on:

    1) CRIMSON GLORY: I cannot possible see how the new CRIMSON GLORY
singer can be better than Midnight. He had such a beautiful original
voice that no one can match. KAMELOT comes close but no cigar. I'm
sure the new singer will be excellent (those guys aren't stupid), but I
find it hard to believe to find someone who can top Midnight.
I just placed a HUGE CD order with SENTINEL STEEL (around $200
worth!!..can never have enough good shit..his prices are INSANE!) and he
said that supposedly Midnight was reunited with them for a little while
but there were conflicts between the band and him and Ben Jackson..so
they were both kicked out..but then again, I've heard rumors that he's a
whale poacher in Alaska so who the hell knows what's true.
      Bottom Line: Can't beat Midnight!

    2) JASON BECKER: If any musician has moved me the most out of my many
CD's (I have over 400..) it is Jason. There was a great post the other
day (sorry..I forgot your name..that said there are only so many
adjectives that you can use when words can no longer contain the
emotions evoked by his music. An amazing talent who doesn't deserve his
lot. Let's appreciate what he's giving us while he's still alive!!!!
Whoever doesn't own his 2 solo albums and CACAPHONY work is missing
out..it will only enhance your lives..especially
    PERSPECTIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3) HELLOWEEN: Whoever said that Keepers 1 and 2 were nothing special
deserves to listen to MUZAK for eternity. How dare you :-) You are
telling me that the song "Halloween" in all its 13-minutes of intense
    emotional melodic majesty wasn't interesting?!?
    WHAT??!?!?$?#@?#$?&?##?&?%?$??&^(?(?&?(
The only problem I have with them now is that Andi Deris cannot hold a
candle to Michael Kiske. He is part of my "Golden Triad" of singers who
can do no wrong...Ray Alder, Geoff Tate, and Michael Kiske. All are so
original it makes me cry..especially Kiske!!!! LaBrie is good, but
flubs the live stuff too much..he's great in the studio though.

    4) NEVERMORE: Their new album "Politics of Ecstasy" is fucking
BRILLIANT!!!! Damn, they upped the ante on this abd created an amazing
album of power/progressive metal..all hail Warrel Dane (vocal god that
he is!) and shredder Jeff Loomis!!!!!HAIL, HAIL HAIL!
Also check out ICED EARTH..although they gotten more restrained on their
newer stuff..do not hesitate to buy "Night of the Stormrider" first
chance you get..I have NEVER, NEVER seen as much stamina as these
guys!!! Speed picking so fast and clean your balls will fly
off....thundering gallops at warp factor 10..ahhhhhh..my cup of tea!

Its all GREAT music..go out and check it out. Make sure to play it with
your wondows down (even in sub-zero NYC)...people must know there is
better shit out there than BUSH for gods sake.

    ohh Chris P. hehehe..ummm..its New Years...remember anything???? I'll
    talk to you soon....

    cheers,
       Carlo

    > From: Jazzmin Belle Sommers <jazzmin@ou.edu> > Subject: Zebra, and an open letter Vince

This is an excellent example of a letter that belongs in private e mail. I'm not complaining, as it would be hypocritical for me to do so... but in my attempts to stop doing things like this myself, I notice it more when others do it.

    > Does anybody have (is it out yet) Nuno Bettencourt's new solo CD? What is > it like?

Very raw. Not at all like extreme. I'd say it's like 90's Beatles kind of thing with the intensity of some of the new alternative bands that are out these days. This isn't an alternative album... but it's not heavy metal or progressive. It's similar to Z, AC/DC, and the Black Crows in intenity. I guess that would classify it as Hard Rock. It's very listenable, though there are fewer shred solos (I did notice at least one solid string skipping performance). Nuno sings all vocals to my knowledge, and I like his voice more than Gary Cherone's. I recommend listening before you buy, if only because this is not what you expect from Mr. Bettencourt.

    > From: "Vincent G. LuPone" <vgl@u.arizona.edu> > Subject: Re: an open letter Vince

Right or wrong in the opinions he expresses, I have to give kudos to Vince for being man enough (is that sexist too?) to take the hit and bring it to private e-mail

    > Anyone know if Shrapnel has any more progmetal artists?

Cacophony, Racer X, Haji's Kitchen, and Crimeny, to name a few...

    > From: akyuz@ltp.dmx.epfl.ch > Subject: Fifth Angel - NDTC > > What ever happened to Fifth Angel? I remember seeing one of the former > members (maybe the excellent guitarist Ken Mary) in a recent outfit.

Actually, I believe Ken Mary is the drummer. James Byrd definately the lead guitarist from the band. Their self titled album (which is out of print) is fantastic.... great power metal... cool solos. The band went for a lighter edge--almost glam on their second album and the band crumbled. James also made a band called "Atlantis Rising" on Shrapnel, which is far too 80's pop metal for my tastes, but you might like it. He's also released at least 3 solo albums on Shrapnel, with a very "Uli Jon Roth" vibe to them. Good exotic shredding.

I can't wait to hear Nine Miles. I read Mr. Merlo's lyrics for "Wyatt's Torch" and they read like a Rush song. I could just hear Geddy riping it up on the song. I want to hear if my vision of the band is right.

    > BTW - everyone go sign up at www.planetall.com. It rules! E-mail Bogie > (whose e-mail address escapes me at the moment) for info!

PlanetAll rules! Everyone go there and sign up (don't forget to joing group "Ytse Jam") You won't get junk mail and you can keep every bit of info as private as you might want.

I have it on decent authority that though they aren't planning on releasing the JP 7 string anymore (they were at one point, according to my sources) they WILL be releasing a new Universe. It will be all black, with White Pickups. The edge of the pickguard will be white (as the current black one is green) and it will have the "Dissappearing Pyramids" pearl inlays as fret markers, like the white universe from Passion And Warfare's inside cover. Also a planned release is the new RG series 7 string. Same quality guitar, but minus a few of the details and frills. It should be a 2 pickup configuration (two humbuckers) and will be considerably less expensive than the Universe. You may be able to get a new 7 string for under a grand!

    > This is about Jason Becker. Try Tower Records or a used CD store because > Becker's stuff does not sell that well.... Try out Jeff Kolman if you like > mellow playing, too.

Hey now, I'm all for saving a buck too, but Jason's a different story. He battles ALS daily and needs the money from album sales to survive his condition. Don't buy his album used. Buy it new. In fact, it's best to buy it from http://www.guitarists.com... though as long as you get it new he'll get a cut. Don't screw over someone in his position. Jeff Kollman is also a great guitarist. I wouldn't call him mellow... he's quite the shredder. He has two solo albums, an album with Edwin Dare (a queensryche like band) and an appearance on Guitar for the Practicing Musician's Resume CD. Check it out.

Someone asked about Enchant. I'd say the clips you heard ARE representative of the whole album _A Blueprint of the World_, and you should go and get this album ASAP. And if you really like the album, which you will, then I'd also recommend Mr. So & So _Compendium_, which was recommended to me by Mr. Aaron Silverman. Now all I need to do is find their first album _Paraphernalia_, which has been out of print for a while now. Dang.

James Byrd has released a bunch of albums on his own (James Byrd Band). Pretty decent stuff, but nothing earth-shattering. Fifth Angel had 2 pretty decent albums and tracks from Till Will Tell were featured on Howard Stern's WWOR television show.

    Hey jammers!

Here's something to devestate your progressive ;) brains with, not written by me though, I apprecheate the bands in the quiz, but remember all, it's humor....:

A desperate concert promoter is arranging the Pretentious Bands of the Seventies Concert Tour and has five bands to choose from -- Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Genesis, King Crimson, Rush and Yes. The concert must include at least three of the five bands. The tour must meet the following conditions:

Thankfully, a band can only perform once. Emerson, Lake and Palmer and King Crimson cannot both perform. The first band to perform must be either Emerson, Lake and Palmer or Rush. The last band to perform must be either Genesis or Rush. If both Genesis and Yes perform, Genesis must perform before Yes.

    1. If Emerson, Lake and Palmer performs first, which one of the following lists all of the bands that could perform second?

    (A) Genesis (B) Rush (C) Genesis, Rush (D) Rush, Yes (E) Genesis, Rush, Yes

    2. If King Crimson performs at the concert, which one of the following must be true?

    I. Rush performs first. II. King Crimson performs second. III. Genesis performs last.

    (A) I only (B) III only (C) I and II only (D) II and III only (E) I, II, and III

    3. Which one of the following is an acceptable sequence of bands at the concert?

    (A) Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Rush, Genesis (B) King Crimson, Genesis, Yes (C) Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes, Genesis, Rush (D) Genesis, Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Rush (E) Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Rush

    4. Which one of the following bands must perform at the concert?

    (A) Emerson, Lake and Palmer (B) Genesis (C) King Crimson (D) Rush (E) Yes

    5. All of the following are possible EXCEPT

    (A) all of the bands perform except King Crimson (B) all of the bands perform except Emerson, Lake and Palmer (C) Genesis performs before Rush (D) Emerson, Lake and Palmer performs before Yes (E) Emerson, Lake and Palmer performs before Rush

    (Scroll down for the answer.)

OK, apparently this thread is *not* dead. In an attempt to quash all similar threads at once, here's all the latest gossip:

Kirk Hammett is gay, but is not involved in the James/Lars arrangement. Neil Peart and his wife are both gay. They adopted. Kevin Moore has testicular cancer. That's why he has no hair. I was *not* the one that shaved Mike Portnoy's head. "Poofter" is analogous to the N-word on the insult scale, you fucking blowjob.

    Hope this clears everything up.

BTW, if you're too immature to discuss someone's sexuality without using terms like "poofter," keep it the fuck to yourselves. You really look like an asshole.

That doesn't matter. There's got to be a million rehearsal/recording studios on Long Island, and they all stay in business.

    > A ballpark figure on how much $$$$ we might have to consider to spend to > do this project.

How attached are you to your less-vital organs?

Each room: Drum set $1000-3000? (I dunno, I'm not a drummer) Guitar amp $600 (or two) Bass amp $600 P.A. $500-2000? (Again, I dunno) Ashtrays 5 @ $1.99 each (Yes, get 5 dammit. Most studios only have one or two, and it's annoying.) Cheap used couch and coffeetable $75 Keyboard stand $50? Carpet $25 (you'll waste your money if you spend more)

Assorted other crap like soda machine, fake autographed pictures of Joan Jett (doesn't every studio have those?), a desk, an appointment book... A *lot* of money.

    > What is the average size in square feet do most studio's run?

Depends on whether you want to go for budget or comfort. 25x25 is always nice for a room. 20x20's doable, I guess. Less, and you run into problems of sound bouncing all over the place.

    > Average hourly cost that other studios charge to rent it out? (This is > obviuously the whole purpose of our venture ---- allow local bands and > more use our facility and to make a profit).

On LI, most places charge $15-25/hr for rehearsal, and around $25-40/hr for recording, depending on the recording equipment, number of tracks, etc. Richie tells me that there's a studio around here (in VT, where no one lives) that charges ~$10/hr for recording!

Good luck! Let us know how it goes, and, uh, whether you plan to give YtseJammer discounts. :)
