Just listening to my new copy of I Mother Earth - Scenery & Fish
and reading the thanks and credits sections in the CD booklet. They
thank several bands including DT. However, they misspelled it (ie:
reversed the R and E in theater - Dream Theatre). I wonder if this was
intentional as some sort of joke of just a typo? Anybody know? BTW, the
IME CD is excellent, IMO. Haven't had a chance to check out the enhanced
CD-ROM portion yet, but looking forward to it.

    A big agree here...

Back before I listened to any prog, I had reached a "saturation point" with
heavy metal in general. I felt like there was nothing else worth buying that
I didn't already have. The I started picking up a few christian rock albums
(Barren Cross, X-Sinner, Deliverance). It was like a whole new "wing" of
music had opened up for me. Suddenly, there was all this new material to
get, it was great. The same thing happened when I got on this list, only
    with prog bands.

There is definitely some great non-secular music out there, and it's worth
    looking for.

a copy of it in their mail program--can I ask you to mail it directly to me
as well? I am putting together a letter on behalf of the jam, with all the
Becker related posts I can find. I thought that Jason and his management
would appreciate it. Just do me the favor and look through your outbox and

You're not heartless.... there might have been a better way to phrase
that.... but I know what you mean. Personally, while I'm impressed to hell
with anyone that can write an album worth of music when they are unable to
move, I don't think this is the case for me. That in and of itself is a
valid reason for me to buy the album... coupled with the fact that Jason has
been my favorite musician for almost 10 years now. If someone wants to buy
the album as a sign of sympathy, that's fine.... but I doubt if anyone is
going to write a rave review out of sympathy if they dislike the album.
Music as complex and multifaceted as that on Perspectives requires a few
listens to absorb... but I don't know... the opening track catches most
people INSTANTLY. You saw firsthand what ALS does to people. You can
probably understand just how hard it would be to write an album in that
state. Your friend was lucky to live as long as he did--they say the
average survival rate is between 5-7 years. That is truly the worst form of
punishment I could come up with.

    >Progmetal? Racer X? Racer X Progmetal? Since when does an album of
    >sixteenth notes/beats on all instruments (including the vocals) at 380
    >beats per minute equal progressive metal?

Racer X uses highly technical instrumentation, odd time signatures, and long
instrumental passages. Plus it's quite obvious that there's SOME Racer X
influence (or perhaps just Paul Gilbert influence) in our beloved Petrucci.
Listen to Skit Scat Wah (or watch the opening of the first Gilbert
instructional video)and then listen to the end of Erotomania... Those licks
are pretty damn similar... I speak from experience of playing them AND
listening to them. Same technique, same style, same theme. Both (all three
    I guess) rule. :)

the cd-rom's pretty cool. it's got a nice bio on the guys, and
part of the video "one more astronaut."

actually, i saw the video for "another sunday" last thursday. i
actually paid for it (yes, i called the box. i was at my girlfriend's

Are you thinking of dubbing cds, thus depriving artists of their hard earned
royalties, forcing them to go back to menial labor and give up their arts as
they are unable to support themselves my making music when the records can
be reproduced illegally? If that's the case, then yes. :) CDs are just
digital data, not unlike that Warcraft !! cd sitting on your desk. But the
cost of blank CDs is not much less than that off the actual release (unless
we're talking imports) and I'd gladly pay the extra $5 to get the original
    case and liners and everything.

I was under the impression that 'jan hammer' was the name of a band, and
that jordan rudess was the keyboard (ski?!) player... if this is not so,
    can someone straighten me out?
Jan Hammer has been on keys for a long time. The earliest that I have is
Mahavishnu Orchestra's *Birds of Fire*, circa early 1970's (MO is/was an
early vehicle for guitar god, John McLaughlin; percussion god Billy Cobham
was also part of MO at this time). On this album there are some tremendous
guitar/keys/violin (Jerry Goodman) shredding duos/trios; MO later also
featured fusion violin god Jean-Luc Ponty.

Jan Hammer is most famous, unfortunately, as the composer of the theme for
TV's *Miami Vice*. Jan Hammer is also featured on some of the earlier Jeff
    Beck solo albums.

    Chris sez:

    >I was under the impression that 'jan hammer' was the name of a band,
    >and that jordan rudess was the keyboard (ski?!) player...
    >if this is not so, can someone straighten me out?

Jan Hammer, composer and keyboardist, has been around a lot longer than most
people would think. He was releasing solo stuff as far back as '68 ("Make
Love"). Hammer wrote the "Miami Vice" theme that was so popular in the
show's heyday. I believe he also wrote the "Axel F" theme popularized by
Harold Faltermeyer in "Beverly Hills Cop."

Hammer has dozens of solo albums out there, most unfortunately out of print
now. "Escape From Television" includes songs from Miami Vice, while "Beyond
    The Mind's Eye" is a jazz/fusion oriented album like much of Hammer's stuff;
it's also available as a video with different tracks. A very approachable
album is 1994's "Drive," with Jeff Beck on guitar (!) and Michael Brecker on
    sax.

Other solo stuff he has: "Chancer," "Snapshots," "Here to Stay," "Too Much
to Lose," "Black Sheep," "Melodies," "Untold Passions." If you can find any
of these, check them out; Hammer's a great keyboardist.

    Neil says:

    >following all this talk about Jason Becker's album "perspectives", I decided
    >to check it out at my local CD store. I didn't buy it. There is certainly
    >some interesting stuff on it, but nothing that really knocked me out. I then
    >wondered (WARNING: heretical question coming) how many people rave about
    >this album because they know of Jason's medical situation.

*boggle* Oh well. As one of the people who's been raving about the album: I
pondered that question for all of three milliseconds (it may have been a bit
longer) before answering it with a resounding "Nah."

I don't care how the music was written (most of it by computer due to
Jason's condition). I'm saddened that Jason can't play all of it himself the
way he no doubt wanted to. But I think it's beautiful regardless, and that's
why I love the album. If you didn't feel it -- well, that's your opinion. :)

Bafu then graced us with his views on zamboni-patrol (and other things):

    >Yeah, I know what you mean. Like when I see someone in a car ahead of me
    >STOP unnecessarily at an intersection because some PEDESTRIAN has decided
    >to casually yet DEFIANTLYcross the street in a crosswalk AGAINST the
    >"don't walk" signal...then all of a sudden instead of being polite the
    >driver just hits the gas and PLOWS 'em down...

I don't know whether you live in a "college town" or not, Bafu, but lemme
tell you that here in a 28,000+ -student college town like this one (Athens,
GA) it's just about unendurable. Am I the only one who thinks that when you
cross a street and the light changes, you should HURRY?

Andrew responds with his own views on driving:

    >Neat trick: when waiting for idiots to cross against the light,
    >which is of course green for you, drop your car into neutral and rev the
    >engine (or just hold in the clutch, for us manual shifters). I've been
    >pleasantly surprised by the number of people who pick up the pace fearing
    >their demise. Or maybe it was Dave Mustaine blasting from my car that
    >scared them...

I've tried this, but revving of engines loses a bit of its threatening punch
when it's coming from a 4-cylinder Ford Escort. :) :) I have at times laid
    on the horn, though.

    > A dream of mine is to buy a car completely made of steel, or
    >build it myself. I would then humble all of the fiberglass conveyance
    >driving Jersey morons by crippling their fragile vehicles. Ahhhh... the
    >sound of crunching plastic as that Lexus driving bastard gets his due for
    >not using a directional when changing lanes...

YES! YES! YES! Build me one too! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Er....what I meant to say is that it's a cool idea. I've actually toyed with
the idea of fixing a ram-plate (a la "Mad Max") onto the front of my
parents' junk-hauler, a '76 Ford LTD station wagon. (We call it "Tank.")

    Bafu in full force again:

    >> I was *not* the one that shaved Mike Portnoy's head.
    >
    >Oh, of course not. It was the Jagermeister. Yeah. I suppose it is also
    >true that people don't kill people, GUNS kill people...

Neither one is true. Guns don't kill people. People don't kill people.
Bullets kill people. Just make bullets impossible to get and you'd see a lot
less deaths from shootings. (The rate of clubbings would probably rise
pretty quickly though). The NRA couldn't even form the National Bullet
Association; the letters are already taken.

    >Nevermind...

Oh, good grief, I thought we were free of the Nirvana discussions...Where's
    Skadz?!?!?!

    >"Waruku Omouna."
    > --Guy, Street Fighter Alpha

    "Hakuna Matata."
-- Timon and Pumbaa, The Lion King

    Cheers,
    Phil
