i dont know much about this, but here is everything i know:

three bands are playing at area51 in houston tomorrow night, 1/24/97.
two of these bands have two of the guys from king's x in them. i dont
know if one is in one band, one in another, or what. i dont know which
two guys, either. i dont know if these are side projects, or their
new bands. i have no idea if king's x is stil together.

just wanted to warn everyone within driving distance. i will be there
and report back on what is going on.

i dont even know the names of the bands. i heard a rumor that king's
x was playing that night, and i got my ex-girlfriend down in houston
to do some detective work for me.

Phillip commented about Masquerade and asked about Holy Soldier. While
Masquerade IS on Metal Blade (my previous mistake -oops!) and don't
specifically market themselves as Christian, their lyrics on Surface of
Pain ARE clearly christian. If you know anything about christianity, read
the lyrics and it will be obvious to you. They are even carried by most
of the on-line christian CD stores.

Holy Soldier did release a new album about a year and a half ago. Its
titled "Promise Man." IMO, their new singer is much better than their
last. His voice is more mature and refined and he doesn't feel the need
to constantly scream. PM contains a lot of harmonies too, which can't
hurt to cover any shortcomings the lead vocalist may have. The music
changes mood song to song and covers everything from pretty heavy metal
to moody alternative, to very bluesy.

Thanks to the guy who caught my mistake about Masquerade's label (they
are indeed on Metal Blade). However, Believer is not. They are (were) on
R.E.X. - a christian lable specializing is heavy metal & hard core
christian (although rumor has it they just folded).

I was unaware of any confusion about who Portnoy was being endorsed by. It
is Tama. Pick up a Modern Drummer magazine. That should clear up your
confusion. The fact that I watched him play a Tama kit at the Birch Hill
made it pretty clear to me. As far as merit in what I said about the label
giving them the runaround on the release of the new disc- What do you mean
"merit"? I'm quoting Mike Portnoy. If its not true than I've been lied to.
I'm only telling you what he told me.

It rocked ? Man, this is one of the best new bands of the 90's. Although
they changed their name to Mumbo's Brain, they are still around. Doing some
performances too I believe. I dunno if they have demo recorded or are in the
studio yet. Does anyone have more info on this great band ?

Btw, singer/guitarist Dave Clemmons has left the band. Seems they have a new
leadsinger, but I have no idea who it is.

Hope this helps you and other DTM/MB hungry fans for more info.

    Hey guys,

This is an interesting list here. Somebody (Hector?) posted in digest 2218
that they were looking for a decent keyboard instructional video.

It is to my understanding that "T Lavitz" has a pretty good one out. For
those of you not familiar with him, he was the Keyboardist for the Dixie
Dregs for a while. He also has some solo releases. T. Lavitz is a great
player. He combines rock, jazz, blues, and country into his style which
creates an interesting blend. I hear that Chick Corea has a good one as
    well (maybe 2?).

    Anyway, I hope this helps.

    Take care,

    Matt

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Now I know, and knowing is

this list, maybe even Blind Melon, and while I may not take offense, maybe
    they do.

my favorite, "John Myung Is The Next Tony Levin In 97"?

    >No matter what their religious views, being a great musician is what is
    >important for the music I listen to. Thoughts from other jammers?

I don't have any problem with Christian lyrics or messages, but I wouldn't
listen to an artist if their lyrics/content were blatantly Satanic. I
would find it difficult to "get into their music" knowing that their
    values/message conflicted with mine.

This was one of the posts I've ever read on the 'Jam. Especially
considering all the unfocused posts about Kirk Hammett lately. As far
as music being the "one thing we have in common with God", I think
Bach (it might have been Beethoven) said it best: "Every note for the
    grace of God".

    >[About Jan Hammer]: And of course, Axel F...the Beverly Hills Cop theme.

Point of clarification: Axel F. was written and performed by Harold
Faltermeyer. Speaking of soundtrack music, if you haven't already, pick
up the re-released Star Wars soundtrack. The unreleased material is
a definite plus, and the limited edition packing is the icing on the cake.
Even though you can't be a kid again, January 31st will be the next best

Yes!! HELSTAR is sooooo amazingly good! I'm guessing you saw "A Distant
Thunder" and "Nosferatu", which are the only albums on Metal Blade and I
think they were recently re-released so whoever finds "Nosferatu" and
doesnt pick it up is missing the opportunity of a LIFETIME!!!! Those 2
albums are their best out of 5. First two albums "Burning Star",
"Remnants of War" are pretty good, but by no means reaches the level of
brilliance that is achieved on "Nosferatu"!!! Harmonized guitars,
swirling melodies, hyper-melodic riffing, haunting lyrics (most of it is
a concept album on Dracula!) and mesmerizing vocals...HELSTAR does NO
    wrong on this album!!!!!
Its probably one of the few CD's that I won't let my friend borrow
because it took me ages to finally find (before they re-released it) and
it is timeless. "A Distant Thunder" is equally amazing and highly
suggested..same lineup for these two albums....partly because of the
addition of Andre Corbin (currently FATES WARNING future touring
guitarist in place of Aresti)..he was supposed to be on the new FW album
but I'm guessing Jim Matheos got word of his not-so-trustworthy
personality and wanted to try him out in a live situation before
    dedicating him to the band.

**Do NOT get their latest "Multiples of Black"..it is horrible
(because half the band is gone and the production is horrible no thanks
    to Dave Ellefson)
Lead singer James Rivera's new band CHAOTIC ORDER is pretty damn good
(I have their demo from the guitarists girlfriend) and will hopefully
get signed to Metal Blade soon! The next SENTINEL STEEL should have
Part II of the HELSTAR interview..I can't wait!!

Whoever knows of HELSTAR, PLEASE speak up..I can't believe this gem of a
band has gone virtually unnoticed for so long!!!! Too bad chances of a
reunion are very slim since their parting with Andre was on real bad
    terms.

Long live "Nosferatu"....."You fools...you cannot destroy me..I am the
    KING of my kind"
they also use samples from the Dracula movie (the one w/ Frank Langella
I believe) as intros to most of the songs...now I must go listen to it
because I am salivating at the thought of those harmonized leads
    :-)))))))))

    cheers,
       Carlo (aka fates, aka YtseSatan)

    Hi

I am out of lurk mode to make a comment on the observations concerning the misspelling of Theater. This may be a no-brainer to everyone so I apologize in advance if I am stating the obvious but no one else has said it (flames to kdonnelly@vines.colostate.edu).

THEATER is the American English spelling of the word while THEATRE is the commonwealth English spelling of the word (Commonwealth countries include Britain, Canada, Australia, etc.). The meaning of the word is no different. There are several other examples of such disparity between American English and English (as a Brit living in the US I know about these because I am often ridiculed for apparent misspellings!!) e.g. Color/colour, center/centre, aluminum/aluminium.

Out of respect for the country of origin of the band (USA) we should always use the American English spelling. Innocent mistakes will happen and I guess it is a cultural thing.......and we all know about multiculturalism now don't we!!??!

My thanks to all those who post reviews and recommendations for other worthy bands on the jam - my taste and CD collection are growing better every day.

    Bye, Kevin D.

Well, I'm sure I hear Delay on some of James's stuff. I would also count pretty highly on there being all kinds of compression and mild chorusing on everythinghe sings. That's not a flaw... it's just how they make vocals work on an album. Also, I'd be pretty damn scared if James sang into an SM58 in the studio. The SM58 is a decent mic... but does NOT have the dynamic range to pick up the subtlties that some of your better AKGs and the likes have. In the studio, I'd bet the farm on them using condenser mics for all the vocal recording.

Just a side note, because I (had I a cd burner) would do the same thing.... just because it's dubbed from a video, doesn't make it legal. :)

That solo is Skolnick. Skolnick was in Testament from it's inception through "The Ritual". He was then replaced by Glenn Alvelais (sp?) who was sacked in favor of Murphy. That's the story as I know it. There may have been someone in the band after Glenn but before Murphy.

And hey, that's fine if you don't like comparing musicians, but I have to totally agree with Carlo. While DT is one of my absolute favorite bands, there are LOTS of bands that now, after seeing them a few times, I'd choose to see instead if both played on the same night. They're great, but you need some variety. There are people I think are better musicians than the members of DT. That's my opinion. I don't force it down your throat (unless it's Jason Becker or Michael Romeo :) ) and you don't have to accept it. It's just there as expression and food for thought.

Lastly, Waaaaay back around the Awake tour I remember people looking for the off white DT hat with the black bill and the Majesty symbol on it. I'm not sure I'm going to give mine up... but I'm curious. What would be the interest in a DT hat signed by all the members of the band (I was at the aftershow party and got some things signed). Alex Skolnick did play on "Return To Serenity." It was the last album he did with Testament. Shame he was never able to get Exhibit A off the ground.

One thing you sure warned about CD Burners is that the discs they make have a habit of skipping in a lot of players. Especially car players. Sometimes regular component CD players won't read them right.

Just a few quick comments... I finally got around to buying Lemur Voice CD ($15 at Newbury Comics) and I must say that it is very good... I heard part of it in my car on the way down to the Proividence Fix for 96 show (thanks to Jeremy) and decided to buy it once I found it...

The music has some great parts, but I won't really comment too much, especialyl since I have not listened to it all that many times... the 1st instruemtnal, Akasha Chronicles is increcdible... The music at times reminds me alot of Fates Warning... and the singer at times sounds alot like Sting, but thats just my opinion... Anyway, Marcel, incredible CD... would definatly go to a concert if you guys are ever on tour in the States...

Also, for the person who mentioned wanting to hear the new QR song that is on the Promised Land CD-ROM, if you really want, simply browse the CD and double click on the .mov file (I forget what it is called) and this will bring up the QT player installed on your system and allow you to see the video/hear the song without finding it through the game...
