I'm going to re-join Columbia House soon so I have to pick about
87 different CD's out of their catalog. I'm looking to try out
some new stuff. I don't want to start a giant thread here or anything
so you can send me e-mail. What Sepultura album(s) should I
get? From what I know about them, they are in a catagory with
the likes of Pantera right? Anything Pantera-ish would be cool.
I don't like alot of thrashy stuff though.

    Thanks for the info!

No, they aren't broken up. I do know that Jerry (drummer) is doing "Jam Session" shows in the area (Houston area, that is). Anybody is welcome and jam with him. Doug has done it, and so have some of the guys from GC. I'm guessing that this 1/24 Houston show is one of those open jam sessions with Jerry. There's info on their Official page, set up by Ty Tabor. The URL is now:

    http://www.compassnet.com/grump

As far as their side projects, Ty is working on a solo project. In fact he just started it recently. He's planning on releasing via the Net first. Check the URL above for more info. Also, Jerry is doing these "Jam Sessions." Doug is in a side band Man Friday, which is supposed to be releasing something late spring (like everybody else).

They (KX) are not broken up. They have demoed a bunch of new tunes, and now they are waiting for the response from labels.

Man, stuff like that *never* happens to me! I heard once that Mercyful Fate saw one of my bands play once, and I didn't even know about it until a year later!

    Maybe I should practice more.

I think it had something to do with the fact that while Mapex makes quality stuff, Tama is a bigger company and could offer more support. Similar to Myung and Tung/Yamaha and EVH and Ernie Ball/Peavey.

It has been, I'm not sure how often. They played it at Birch Hill 12/29/95, and other times. Maybe BH 6/9/95, I don't remember. JP played electric throughout, the one time I saw it performed.

Geez, all these shows are running together in my mind. Did they do LTL at the Fix shows? My God, I can't remember. Skadz, you shouldn't have bought me that beer! :)

I was watchin' LiT today and noticed somethin' on Kev's Keyboards (especially duringthe TtT video) that kinda looks like some kinda decorations of some kind. If you were playing his key's it would be up towards the buttons to do sounds and all that...does anyone who's familiar with Kev's keyboard set-up know if that's part of the Keyboard...or possibly some kinda cow-lookin' (hint hint) decoration??? It's noticable in various other parts of the live segments in the video...I still hafta check out my Bootleg vid's ta see if I can see anything like that on those. Anyways just figured it would be a new thread and it's never been discussed before as far as I know. Oh yeah...I'm NOT talking about the Japanese symbols on his stand just in case some of you geniuses are thinkin' "Damn he's stupid...it's Japanese!" Later Kids!

Cool! Thanks! This is exactly what I heard. I was wondering why no one else described it that way. I mentioned to my girlfriend...a major Sting fan...that the Lemur Voice vocals sounded like Sting. When I played it for her, she told me I was nuts.

Greetings and happy ish 2222 ye 'jamanoids...

Re: the "best DT cover band" stuff we've been seeing of late. Y'know, considering all the Fates-worshiping that goes on around here, I find it rather interesting that nobody (to my recollection) has listed one of the Fates bandmembers to cover DT's stuff. Whatsamatter, people, don't you have enough faith in the Fates? :)

A question about DT's vocals (no, not the "James can't sing live" debate, which I have little interest in): exactly what was it that caused Charlie Dominici and Chris Collins to leave the band? Were they fired, or did they leave of their own volition, and what for?

I just think it's kind of strange that a band with this much musical diversity has this much trouble hanging onto a vocalist (at first, anyway...KJL doesn't seem to be going anywhere, I hope).

BTW, if you're going to mention that I should check the FAQ, I'd be delighted to do so -- if I weren't having problems accessing the Web at the moment. I haven't got a copy of the FAQ anyplace else. :P

Regarding cows, Rip (who else) sez:

Keep going, Rip...you've obviously gotten through to the Gateway 2000 people. Ever seen the boxes they ship their computers in? Moo!!!!

I was typing a post and sent it prematurely. It was regarding the Joe Satrinai pickup topic. I just wanted to say that Joe gets his tone very heavily from his amps, and that you'll have much better all around shred tone from a Duncan (I use the Demon. I have YET to hear a pickup that can do more and has better tone.) or one of them JP pickups. The Fred isn't what makes Joe's harmonics come out like that. As I reach toward the ability to play similar techniques I realize that THAT part of his sound is coming from his hands. Everyone underestimates that the hands and the touch of a player makes an enormous difference. That is all.

Oh, and Tempus: my next post will be larger than God, just for you.

Hello All!! This is my first time posting on the "jam". When I saw someone asking about King's X I just had to respond (since they are one of my all time favorites). I was checking out their web site the other day, and I found a link to a Real Audio site that has two clips of short segments from two new songs they are recording. If you dig King's X you should really check them out. They are currently writting new material and shopping it around to some record companies, but as far as I know nothing is final yet. By the way, I want to thank all of you who posted stuff on Jason Becker's new disc. After I read what you guys wrote I went right out and ordered it from Blockbuster music. I did shop around, but no one had it in stock. Then again, Gainesville FL is too damn alternative, so I didn't get my hopes up. It seem's like there is just nothing good out there to buy nowadays. Are there anything out there right now that is worth spending a college student's food money on? If there is please let me know.

I found this review in a local magazine called Jam (Jan. 17-30) This sounds pretty good. Any jammers can recommend this?

*************** Therion: Theli (Nuclear Blast) *** This German prog metal quartet may be the final chapter in the musical tomes of "overblown" and "bombast." Fans of the classical labyriths of Savatage or Yngwie Malmsteen take note--this disc was recorded with a pair of choirs handling the lead vocals! The conceptual premise is even more outrageous--some crazed mythological hiijinks sung in the band's own dialect (shades of Magma) along with searing guitar leads and pompous synthesizers. Guitarist/keyboardist Christofer Johnsson's terrific soloing keeps this operatic rhapsody from becoming parodied in the next Wayne's World, with swift complicated shifts and nimble-fingered phrases. Earns another extra credit start for flaunting the Wagnerian/Orffian excess (and the whopping recording budget) in the face of all the low-fi du-jour. ****************

This was one of the first xian bands that I got into when I was listening to exclusive xian bands. (how pitiful of me) I first got into Angelica (which has a great guitarist btw), Sacred Warrior (sounds like a less prog version of FW), and Tamplin & Friends. The bands worth listening are IMHO are Touriquet, Sacred Warrior, Tamplin _Axe to Grind_, Precious Death. All these off the top of my head.

Another little review from Jam magazine. I'm bound to get this CD. I have the Circle of Dust cd which I believe is by the same guy who made this album. Sounds like this band could get somewhere, but its on a christian label so probably not.

**************** Klank: Still Suffering (Tooth & Nail) You probably wouldn't want to know what haunts Daren "Klank" Diolosa, if this disc is any indication of his emotional stability. Still Suffering reveals a complete series of neuroses set to a pulverizing-yet-dancable industro-metal onslaught of sound (courtesy of producer Celldweller) from this Farmingdale, NY vocalist/guitarist. Trent Reznor must be kicking his own bony ass for not signing this guy to his Nothing label. ***************

Hey, these are couple short reviews that I posted in Usenet. Hope I can turn you on to these bands. They are worth getting. Just curious, any Deus ex Machina fans on the 'jam? These dudes are on somewhere in my Top Ten of all-time favorite bands.

    Deus ex Machina: _Diacronie Metronomiche_

This album is their live recording and the production in excellent. It sounds studio-quality. DeM was formed in '85 in Italy and have released three album and the live one. The group formed after a rock-opera that was based on the struggle btw. Man and Nature. The band consists of lead singer, bassist, guitarist, violinist, drums, hammond and moog and other 70's keyboard equipment. This band is a fusiony, complex with a lot of jams with 70's italian prog styling but with a rocking sound. The lead singer sings in Latin and has an incredible range and control on his voice. He does a lot of "special effects" with his voice like grunts, growls, and piercing high notes. He style is operatic yet also gritty which is really awesome. You might notice that singers like James Labrie strain for those high notes, but Piras does it very naturally and fluidly. The violinist is also top-notch and does a lots of crazy effects with his violin. The guitarist plays in intricate, fast jazzy style and shred like Frank Zappa. At times, his playing can go close to metal. Overall, the music has a lot of time changes and abrupt parts, but can quickly shift into jams. If you can handle the abruptness of Anglagard, then you can handle DeM. And if you think that DT's Metropolis is complex, wait till you listen to "Ad Montem" and you'll have a brain fart.

I only have the live album, and have heard a few of the studio songs. IMHO, get the live album. They really have more energy on the live album. Or if you can't find it, try _Da Republica_ which was among the favorites in Expose's top ten picks of the year.

    Braindance _Fear Itself_

Braindance is another unique band that sounds like cyber-metal or something like that. The vocalist has a gothic quality that kinda sounds like Rick Astley singing really low (which sounds good). Its hard to describe them but they have lot of samples, ambient sounds, and jams. The guitars aren't particularly heavy, but heavy enough to call it metal. The guitarist is female and she pretty darn good. It sound like she changes her guitar sound throughout the songs. I think it sounds like distorted guitar with keyboard mixed in it. A couple of songs start with samples then go off into ambient and then some prog metal. Overall, I think the band is pretty good, their are some good songs on the album, but some songs are short and are ambient/metal noisy. One song has a cool extendend jam with fretless bass playing a trippy sound and the guitarist doing some seering ambient solos. I think that DT fans will like this one.

I knew we'd still have all these people rubbing it in about Birch Hill and all the other concerts. It's been over a month now. Good grief. I can't wait for the new album .:P

As for driving to see DT. Had I known about the concert a month sooner, I'd have taken my week's vacation and you wouldn't have ben surprised to see an Idaho license plate in that parking lot. Don't knock it cuz some people like DT more than you. :)

Yessss... My precioussssss.... Is the Bagginssssssss.... I oughtta read the rings trilogy. Only read the hobbit. Am I thinking of the same thing? Bilbo did those things, I think.

Hrm. My turtled just moved. Haven't seen it do anything like that for 2 months now. Maybe I oughtta feed it. Oh, yeah, I was at this intersection today and the light was red. I waited for what seemed like 2 minutes. All of the sudden, the light turned green, and I was able to proceed throught the intersection. Kewl, eh? It happened a couple of times today, too.

Then I suggest you avoid Sepultura. I personally like Chaos AD. The singer doesn't actually do what I refer to singing however. He just grunts in time to the music. Not as bad as Barney on Damage Inc., but really close. I still like it though. Tension relief. Arise is pretty good, too. Never listen to the other stuff. KorgX3 aka Mr. Chuckalupugus
