    Hey there all,
I've gotten into a lot of bands in the last year just because
the jam was oversaturated with their names.
I just got my demo copy of "Power of Omens" and I want to make damn
sure that the Jam gets oversaturated with their name.
This is something that we should all hear.
    Adios,
    Allen K.

had to take this one on the jam, since the initial response hit here:

i still hold my ground that whatever MH put on the demon knight soundtrack,
which is what i was referring to when i said i wasnt impressed, still doesnt
impress me. the album, on the other hand, which i recently heard,
    faithfully rocked.

    Hi everyone,

Okay, so first off, with the discussion about Saigon Kick - I love the first
two (wuz lucky enough to see them open for Extreme on the III Sides tour), but
then they lost their lead singer and I was *highly* disappointed with Water
(I'm sorry but they just totally wimped out on that one - remember, this is
*my* opinion). Anyway, how does Devil in Details compare to each of the
others - in terms of the musical direction, keeping in mind that I like the
first 2, but despise the third one.

Another thing - next Sunday, there's gonna be another Recordfest here in
Milwaukee and I was wondering if some of you could direct me as to what's the
best to get from Symphony X and Stratovarius. Also, what were the CDs Angra
has (again - sorry) - I remember one (the second one?) came two ways, correct
    - one with a bonus track, the other with a bonus CD featuring 3 acoustic
tracks, correct? Also, any news on Threshold's next one (Kris Claerhout <sp?>
are you out there)??? I'm trying to remember some of the other bands that
caught my attention that I wanted to get suggestions on, but I cant remember
them right now. :( Any suggestions to the above will be very helpful!

Last but not least - and this is off topic - any huge X-Files fans out there?
I am wondering if someone can give me a list (preferably in chronological
order) of all the alien/govt conspiracy episodes (the ones with the
kinda-continuing storyline). Please email me privately on this. Thanx in
    advance.

    > correctly?

Running into Gannon while he teleported around would cause bigbig damage
to Link. This was made somewhat more annoying by the fact that Gannon was
invisible. To make him visible one had to randomly slash at the air around
the room with one's magic sword. Connecting the swooshing blade with
Gannon would make him visible for about one second, at which time one had
to dextrously switch weapons and pound him with a hail of silver arrows.
The sword's only purpose was to bring Gannon into a physical form that
could be attacked, it couldn't actually hurt him. That's what the silver
    arrows were for...

Part of what made Zelda and Metroid (and Contra) so spectacular was that
the music was done by a guy named Hip Tanaka (I'm not sure if he touched
the Castlevanias). He had a great sense of counterpoint. Metroid was the
first game I had ever heard where one of the levels (Kraid's world)
utilized the whole-tone scale. Kid Icarus is another great example, the
title-screen music is fit for a symphony. Or a Dream Theater song. Hmmm...

Now if only DT would do an "Uncovered" gig featuring cover tunes of cool
video-game soundtracks... Naah, that wouldn't be much of a special night
    fru them...

to Memphis next weekend to see Metallica and C.O.C. at the Pyramid
Arena. If anyone from the Jam is also planning to be there, drop me
email and maybe we'll hook up. As currently planned, I'll have one

    Hello once again fellow jammers.

I got the Dragon Attack thing. Haven't listened to it all but so far it's alright.

Has anyone heard of a band called Apocrypha from Shrapnel a fews back. I got to hear some of them and it was pretty cool stuff. Any info would be much appreciated.

On an odd DT related note: I have heard that Mike Portnoy made a cameo appearance on an MTV concert showing of, I think, the red hot chilli peppers, a few months back. Apparently he was in line at the concession stand or something and was on camera for a few seconds....anyone know anything about this? just curious......

    ok later

(IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE SEEING THIS POST, PLEASE READ IT THROUGH COMPLETELY, THERE IS ALOT OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION)

    Hey All ....

Here is my new weekly posting about how to get the most (or least if you don't like us) out of the ytsejam. This will be coming out weekly (hopefully) at least for a while since we are quickly gaining subscribers since school is now back in session. I may post it less often after a while, but for now, it will be weekly.

To get on to the Dream Theater Mailing List:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    subscribe ytsejam Your Name

replace Your Name with your real name (eg: Ryan Skadberg). You should recieve a confirmation letter in the your mailbox within 24 hours. If you do not, mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and I will help you out as soon as possible.

To change the mode you recieve the Dream Theater Mailing List in: There are two ways you can recieve the ytsejam. The first is in digest which is the default. This sends you a large message which contains 15-20 emails each. The other is ack mode, which means you recieve each piece of mail as it comes through. To do this:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    set ytsejam mail ack

    OR

    set ytsejam mail digest

If you have any problems, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com.

To get off the Dream Theater Mailing List:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    unsubscribe ytsejam

You should recieve a confirmation letter within 24 hours. If you don't, once again, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and I will help you out as soon as I can.

To recieve files from the Dream Theater Mailing List:

There are many files kept by the mailing list server. The biggest group are old issues of the jam. It is archived since 1275. If you are looking for an issue earlier than that, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and I will see what I can do. There are also other files kept on the server. These include Mike Bahr CD Updates, The "UnOfficial" Dream Theater SongBook and some others. Any time I add something I usually send a post to the jam so everyone knows about it. To get a list of the files available from the server:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    index ytsejam

This will send you a list of all the files available from the server. To retrieve one of these files:

Send mail to ytsejam-request@ax.com For the subject of the message put:

    asdf

In the body of the message put:

    get ytsejam filename

In place of filename, put the name of the file you want.

    Basic Rules:

There are some basic rules to the jam which make everyone's reading alot more pleasant. Please try and follow them as closely as possible. I will send out warnings to people who blatantly disobey these. You get one warning, a second offense will get your jam priviledges taken away.

    1. Do not post just for the sake of posting. There is already a lot of valid traffic on this list, we don't need unnecessary posts which are a waste of everyone's time. The basic rule you should all try to follow is to think before you post.

    2. No Top Ten (Five, Twenty, Thirty, etc) lists. These lists are a waste. They take up alot of bandwidth and fill up everyone's mailbox much faster than they would like it filled up. If you want to know everyone's top somethings, please ask for ALL responses to be mailed directly to you. This has been done with the end results posted to the jam and it was very very nice.

    3. Do not start / participate in / complain about long off-topic discussions. These have gotten WAY out of hand in the past. If one starts, I will post once saying to stop and take it to private email, anyone continuing the discussion will recieve a warning. These include such topics as God, NIN, Blind Melon, bands selling out, etc.

    4. Private E-Mail is a wonderful thing. Use it when you think it may be more useful than posting to the jam.

    5. Last, but not least, this is YOUR ytsejam. I am around, and I do administrative work, but I do not say what can/cannot be talked about (most of the time) or moderate in any real way. I am the Ytsejam Administrator more than Moderator. Don't complain if the jam seems to be going downhill, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Basically, that is all the basic info. As always, if you have any problems feel free to mail me. I get ALOT of mail on a daily basis, so it sometimes takes me a while to get back to you, but 99% of the time, I will get back to you eventually.

Thanks for Reading and Enjoy the List!!!

    Hi all!!

First big news: I finally got off my ass and learned how to write hypertext, so expect to see me relieve Jeff and Ryan of the tedious and repetitive duties of posting my info on their web pages... I'll be taking over shortly. I'll post up the full URL when it's ready. The page will have complete info on every boot I've released or I'm releasing, plus CD cover scans, preview info, links to all sorts of important shit, and so on. Plus about 10,000 pirated Magic: The Gathering images for flavor. :)

British vs. American spelling: Since we can all more or less easily tell what word is being communicated, the honourable thing would be to honor the communicator with the benefit of the doubt. :)

DreamnDay: CD burners make it rather easy to duplicate boots, but for one-offs and such, it's easy to do a shitty job and very difficult to do a good job. Even for consistent production, I'm just now learning how to keep things defect-free and improve the look and feel of my product (starting by dropping Pioneer greenback CDs and going to HP goldbacks). $45 for a double CD isn't just a good deal: I don't see how they're making any money on it unless they have a Copycat to duplicate with. So you might be getting exactly what you pay for... (be wary)... Plus, any time a CD burner skips (called a buffer underrun) the entire disc is ruined and you have to make it into a frisbee and start another one, so defects are pretty easy to sort out _once someone knows what to watch for_. I have found that people who have a reputation to uphold can deliver very high-quality burned discs... such as James Colberg, who has done an EXCELLENT job with the Subcon and Acoustic Dreams replicas.

Mercy Fuck: was spoken at the Birch Hill in JUNE 1995. Fuckin' Shit was spoken at the Birch Hill in DECEMBER 1995. I should post soundbites of these on my page when I finish it.

Also, the most frequently asked question about Virtual Songs is "How's the sound quality?" As if I'm going to respond "Well, it sucks shit, but I want money". Folks, I think it goes without saying that if it wasn't any good, I wouldn't waste time producing it. :) Plus, I'm continually upgrading the source on each part of the CD wherever possible, including a standing offer of $500 for soundboard DATs of the show (that I need to confirm by receipt). To answer everyone's question as well as possible.... so FAR... the audience DAT sounds a lot like the Over The Europe boot. It's crisp, clear, deep, clean, and complete, and just lacks the richness and balls of a soundboard recording... and I'm working on correcting that digitally in preproduction to whatever extent I can. :) So no, I'm not annoyed at the question because it's a perfectly legitimate question, I just wish some of the people who ask it would listen to Critical Mass and then think things through before asking it of me. I learned my lesson with Cygnus: nothing but the BEST available sound source will do, for ANY boot.

    Take it easy, everyone!!

    - Mike Bahr/durnik@goodnet.com - I don't need your sympathy fuck... :)

Hey again. varga As I sat here listening to the Queen tribute, I wondered if anyone knows if the Freddie Mercury Memorial Concert from Wembley a few years ago was ever released. I am interested in hearing the stuff Extreme did. You can email me privately.

Speaking of the tribute...so far it's decent. I didn't really care for Paul Shortino and Lemmy sucks big time(I couldn't even finish that song), but James LaBrie (of course) was very good and some of the others are good too. This tribute isn't as good as the Rush tribute though.

Speaking of tributes, the US version of the Judas Priest Tribute is released this tuesday with fates warning, angra, and more. I've gotten too many of these dang tributes. I am looking forward to this one though.

Speaking of stuff's release dates, the latest word on Queensryche's new one is a March 25 release.

and speaking of....umm..varga...yeah..varga..Was I the only one disappointed with their second CD "oxygen"? The first one had the basic thrash cool stuff and this one has more alternative (IMO) and weaker vocals and some bad songs. oh well

Hey.... I was just sitting around here pondering on the lyrics to a few DT songs and I thought it might make a good thread: The Dream Theater Translations! That's right folks, I want to translate DT's lyrics from Prog-Speak to contemporary American English. Basically I thought it would be neat to see what differing views people have on the meanings of Dream Theater songs. We'll do this like a contest... like Visual Music. Basically, you translate a song and don't tell anyone the title. If you did well, people should be able to tell the song title pretty quickly. If not.... This could be a pretty cool tool to help people see the meanings of the songs if the lyrics seem a bit too vague for them. If this thread sucks, or has already been done, let me know. :) Otherwise, join in!

Without further delay, the first Dream Theater Translation!: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- It saddens me to see what you'll do to try to be "cool". I guess I went through it myself, some time ago... I can't blame you. You try so hard to be something you're not--and everyone can see right through it... maybe someday you'll get your act together and grow up. I want you for who you are... you can't see yourself anymore, but I know you're still there... and you still think about me. You don't put your foot down for anything. It's all touch and go. What's cool now is lame tomorrow, and you don't learn anything along the way. Is how much money I make what's important? You make your decisions based on greed, not on love. I care for you, and you don't see that either. Long ago my life was a mess, just like yours. Everything was chaos. I followed the people that I thought could help me get to where I belonged.... or where I thought I belonged. By the time I realized that this wasn't me... that this was all bullshit and I was devoting myself to nothing more than a tireless charade I realized that I'd burnt all my bridges and that there was no one to go back to... no one to turn to when I really needed someone. And now you do the same thing... and soon I'll be gone too, just like the friends you've turned your back on. You don't want to believe that this is true... but I have no reason to lie to you. As much as it hurts, I've had it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------

Ratt is releasing ANOTHER hits package? Just HOW many hits have they had since Ratt N Roll 8191 (or whatever it was called). I always thought it was amazing how Ratt could put out a greatest hits cd when all the hits are on one disc already; Ratt (first lp For Atlantic, 1984) -------------------------------------------------------------- >Also, appartently MOTELY CRUE will be at the American Music >Awards on Monday.

Unfortunately this is true. Another band out for your wallets.

SHOW ME THE MONEY! -------------------------------------------------------- >I saw that Tori concert for RAINN on Lifetime that was mentioned here on the >jam, and it was incredible! I think that had to be one of the best >performances I've heard by Tori! Just the emotion she put into every song >was amazing!

A truly awe inspiring show indeed! I hope they replay that considering I forgot it was on until the last moment and didn't have a tape available (D'OH!) If anyone who has a HiFi vcr that can dub me a copy let me know. I have a few Tori videos and concerts that I can dub in trade. -------------------------------------------------------- About the question when DT's label is going to release the new DT disc; as soon as the band gives it to them and they can get the masters pressed and the CDs and Cassettes produced. I would say summer at the Earliest, which would make a Fall tour the most probable.
