No $#!+. It's bad enuff that Bush can't play a song with more than one
chord, that they have to LIPSYNC to the friggin' thing. It kinda makes
ya wonder....does NIN lipsync live performances? With the midi
already taking care of the instruments, and the vocalists lipsyncing,
bands will require LESS talent to sell the "next big thing."

    :P

    hello all

i was channel surfing the other day and i saw a comercial for the new
season of beavis and butthead...in the background you can hear some
music...now at first i thought i was hearing things but thn i saw the
comercial again and well it sounds exactly like a part of the drum solo in
the Mind Control bootleg...can anyone tell me if that is actually part of
a dream theater song or was mike portnoy and john petrucci borrowing from
    some other song???

    thanks

First off, I want to thank Mike Bahrr for responding without an ounce of
defensiveness to my TON attack. It really wasn't an attack, I just really
dislike them and wanted to make that known to people gathering opinions.
And... Can someone tell me about Metal Church? I slobber of great guitar
work and I think I heard some from Metal Church before the last Metalica
show. Please inlighten me. Be well.

Um... why am I the only one with a hand in the air? Don't tell me I'm the
    only one. Am I?

Regarding Type O Negative, I'd like to thank Mr. Bahr for having posted on
this topic a few months ago. I had never heard any of their stuff, and a
friend repeatedly claimed that "they suck". But having read his review and
description of how they've evolved to generate such a success as October
Rust, I had to buy it. So I did, and so I love it. Which reminds me...

One of my first impressions after listening to October Rust, is the similar
atmospheric quality as that of the Cocteau Twins, and The Cure. For those of
you looking to expand musical horizons even more, I highly recommend these
two artists. I shouldn't need to comment on The Cure considering how widely
known they are, but if you're looking for a starting place, I'd point to
"Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me", and "Disintegration". Working backwards
chronologically works well from there, with each step being a small one into
their history. Their older stuff is quite different from their more recent
stuff, as is typical of most bands.

And as far as Cocteau Twins is concerned, they possess some of the same
ethereal quality as is contained in "October Rust", minus the edge and the
deep male voice. They have a female singer who doubles her vocal parts most
of the time with unison or a third. The lyrics, surprisingly enough, are in
English, but are next to impossible to understand. I had once heard that
they don't write lyrics, and simply sing syllables to sound like some
unknown language, but I was since shown otherwise. I recommend starting with
"Heaven Or Las Vegas", "Blue Bell Knoll", and "Four Calendar Cafe", in that
order. If those are appealing, then working backwards into their releases is
    the next step.

If any other Jammers are also into these two band like I am, I'd be happy to
hear about it, so I don't feel so alone.

By the way, I'm proud to announce the arrival of the following CD's to my
    collection: Spock's Beard, "The Light"; Spock's Beard, "Beware of Darkness";
Angra, "Holy Land"; Eldritch, "Seeds of Rage"; Symphony-X, s/t.

My thanks to who make the Jam what it is: a resource.

    Onward...

seeing all this talk about pickups had me wondering.....does anyone have a
fred on their neck? that must sound interesting, to say the least. it seems
like so much a bridge pickup....i have it on my satch guitar on the bridge,
and it just hurts the brain. mine is a little warmer than most freds (i have
the mahogany, no-trem js model6), and it's neato. on my perverted ibanez, i
just ordered the air norton and steve's special in homage to my man jp. to
close it off i added an hs-2 (i think- i forget). add a little coil splitter,
and hey! you got anal rape in the house.

dimarzio just released their 97 catalog, and it's got cool stuff, including
    an interview with petrucci.

as for duncans, some of them are cool, but at the same time, i just can't dig
em. had a 59 on my neck (humfucker) and it was so sweet, i thought i was
brian may for a while, but i like the norton better now.

It was always my assumption that FREDs were more of a neck pickup,
even though DM makes them for either, I'd rather prefer the warmer
pickup in the neck and the dirty one in the bridge. (shrug) Throw a
Fast Track 2 or something in the mid so you get 3 humbuckers. Kinduv
overkill, but I like it. :)

An didya notice how they put his pic in the single coil section of
the cat? I thought that was funny considering he doesn't use em
(interferes with his picking, ya know). Kewl red eyes in the pick,
but I'm afraid those huge zippers'll scratch that lovely guitar there

I can't believe how many bands and CDs this jam has gotten me into.
I swear half of last years income went to supporting my musical
addictiong (in fact, I know it did). Anyone know a good place to
find these Symphony-X, Eldritch, and Angra's Angels Cry CDs to help
contribute to my delinquency? Which do I need to order import and
which are domestic? I tried Angels Cry on import today and all that
was there was Holy Land (which I got and it's excellent, A+).

BTW, Bernd, everytime I listen to Behind, the more I like it. This

but that's not what I'm "waisting bandwidth" for in this post....

It seems our good buddy Vince found a "Jive" machine, wherein you can
submit any number of phrases, sentences, or in this case, songs, and get
the "jive" translation. Is this the first major technological leap for
    Ebonics? Who knows....

You all should enjoy this one. I just pray Vince didn't send it to the

hi there.....i meant to get this out about a week ago, but i've been a bit
    busy.

i saw annie haslam live at the bottom line in nyc, on the 18th. she was the
lead singer of the 70s band renaissance, a phenomenal (one of the best) but
oft-overlooked band from the art rock era. they were the first rock band to
play carnegie hall, and did with the ny philharmonic.

anyways, she did 2 sets, of which i was at the first one. great opening band
called the nudes. folky cellist/guitar duo.....

annie herself came on playing mostly new solo material....not bad, but i
never really dug it. mentioned a piece she did with steve howe that;s coming
    out on an album soon....

she was great with the audience, cracking jokes and all. the best was when
she introduced the drummer, he was forced to come out and do his "trick" for
the crowd. he came up to the mic, spoke, then proceeded to sing renaissance
classic "carpet of the sun".....backwards! yes, backwards!!!!! funny shit.

her band sounded great. young guys (made me think of cher with her pretty boy
band). drummer was awesome. reminded me of manu katche, who i worship over
even portnoy (gasp! don't hate me, please).

anyway, she finished the set with 2 old renaissance songs, "the prince and
the princess" from "scheherazade, and "ashes are burning", which was
    particularly amazing.

all in all, a great show, and i only wish i had the 17.50 to go to the 2nd
set. alas. she also said that there will be a new release of renaissance-
from the king biscuit flower hour, it's a live at the royal albert hall
album. features the london symphony orchestra, and it will be in 2 volumes,
released in feb. and march. i urge anyone who knows not of what i speak go
check an album of theirs out, particularly "prologue", "ashes are burning",
"turn of the cards" and "scheherazade and other stories."

ok. there. if anyone else has seen her recently and beento the 2nd set.
please email me- i'd like to know what she played. thanks.

Ok, Matt - you're officially astray, in my book. Books are much more
significant than opinions, because they're permanent;) I hate the fact
that you don't like ToN, because even though they're not a proggish-type
band, they still capture my attention (no mean feat). There's something
there that is not ordinary, but it's not obvious on first, second, or
even tenth listen. It's there, though, and I'm still trying to figure
    out exactly what it is.

However, judging from the 100 or so posts from your FAQ-ignoring

Hello all! I just read the last jam, (2234) and someone spoke about
Motley Crue lip synching at the AMA. The only reason that I could think
of why Motley Crue would do that is because the AMA is such a planned out
program. The band can't be too loud, or swear, or anything, because its
on TV and whatnot. I'm sure that the Crue would really play if they were
on their own turf (their own concert).
And lastly, I see all these people complaining about some of the threads
that come up. Yes, most of them don't have to do with Dream Theater, but
that's because nothing is really going on with our favorite band. When
their new album comes out, everybody will send in their opinions of the
disc and reviews of concerts which they saw. We all like DT, and
consequently similar bands and styles, so that's why there is talk of QR,
Rush, Marillon, Altura, etc, etc. This jam has helped me get in touch
with a lot of people that have certain music that I don't. I've traded
tapes with people, and have finally located someone that has live videos
of another one of my favorite bands. The information going through the
jam is great. With the Van Halen thing, the story broke hear and there
on the the jam and the internet like three months before MTV said a word
about it. This jam F*%king rules!!
    Dt rocks. (DTC) :)

i don't know much about type o negative, although i've been meaning to
give them a listen... however, i just want to remind you all that if
you're looking for good goth metal, well, Braindance! Braindance!

I also agree that My Dying Bride is very good, but their latest album,
"The Angel And The Dark River," is just way too repetitive... the
music is cool, but the repetitivity bored me. i don't see why people
like repetitivity so much... especially a band that is as capable as
    they are. oh well.
