someone mentioned My Dting Bride. they're my favorite band (besides
Dead Can Dance)!! if you like atmospheric metal, you shoud definitely
check them out. it is amazing music, especially their violinist - he
is incredibly passionate and expressive in his playing. just got their
new album, "Like Gods Of The Sun", last wednesday, and it is amzing, as
i expected.
for those of you who are also into black metal, i picked up the new
Cradle Of Filth as well. holy shit! this album is fucking amazing!

No need waiting for the next DT release, for the end is near... Today
is the release of a new "metal" album from <gulp> Pat Boone... Yes,
Pat Boone's "In a Metal Mood" is being released today amongst much
fanfare and more press coverage than all of your favorite prog/metal
bands put together would ever get for a new release. My ears were
subjected to a sampling of this monstrosity this morning, and I don't
know how many hours of Awake pumped through my headphones at 11, it
will take to wipe this dreck from my brain... Imagine if you will, a
cheezy Las Vegas lounge/big band act performing a cover of Judas
Priest's "You've got another thing comming"... Then seguing into an
upbeat almost jazzy (in a K-tel records sort of way) cover of Led
Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven"... followed by a demented carnival
band on ludes doing a barely recognizable version of Metallica's
"Enter Sandman"... All this and with Mr. Milk and Cookies, Pat Boone
on vocals... This was the torture I endured this morning, and thought
I should warn you all that the world is going to end...very soon, this
just has to be a sign.... Be afraid, be very afraid.....

HA! not too skilled a lyricist? Well maybe you should hear a Type O Song
other than Black No. 1, which imho is pretty much a joke song. The
October Rust album is totally amazing, with the exception of My
Girlfriends Girlfriend, which does NOT belong on this album. The music is
pretty simple, but it's real mood envoking, and the lyrics mean a lot to
me. When I'm with my girlfriend, OR brings out a lot in the both of us. I
have friends that don't like TON. I'm fine with that. But PLEASE never
say Pete Steele is a bad lyricist.

These guys are from the same town in the middle of Sweden =
(=D6stersund) as me and we were all very active on the localmusic =
scene back then, playing gigs and jamming alot.
Then they got a contract and moved to Stockholm (our capital), made =
one record (maybe two, I don't remember) and lost support from the =
record company and vanished into the dark...
Their lead guitarist, Kalle, was a nice and very talented guy but I =
never realy liked their vocalist.
A small trivia: When they got their record deal they dumped their =
original singer and got Jocke from another local band, vise move but =
I didn't like anyone of them (I'm talking about their singing, they =
were great guys otherwise).

All of this talk about lip synching (Bush, Motley Crue, entire Superbowl
Halftime Show) has got me sort of depressed. Could this be the end of
true live performance as we know it? How can anyone respect a band that
fakes it live instead of just getting up there and kicking ass? That's
why I love DT- not only do they PERFORM their music, but they mess
around with the arrangements of a lot of their songs just to keep the
music fresh (not that it would ever get old anyways). This was
especially evident during the Fix For 96 shows. Hopefully, when the new
album comes out, DT will save the (music) world!

One of the singers I was in a band was is a HUGE Dio fan, and
he turned me onto Rainbow and Dio's other stuff. Rainbow was
like, rock and roll verging on the start of metal...I mean,
think about a song like, Kill the King, how many songs used a
harmony like that song, plus a Double Bass drum part, not many
bands that I know of did that. The Bass playing was way ahead
of it's time, so was appice's drumming. Keyboard work, better
than I've ever heard, can't remember who played the keys
though. My favorite album from them has gotta be Rainbow:
Live. That album ruled so much.
Anyways, I did pick up Blackmore's latest, I like it, the mix
was kinda weird but the songs were really good.

I understand Elvis Batur's opinion, as well. I can see how some might
think the music is boring, but it appeals to me greatly. I find myself
listening to it a lot. If I remember correctly, they say their new CD is
going to be more intense than the demo. This lack of itensity or
heaviness might be why Elvis Batur doesn't like it. Who knows? he might
like this new full-length album. I would like to comment on the
production of the demo. The balance is very accurate. The guitar and
keyboard are mixed at the same volume level (or so it seems). In Dream
Theater, the guitar seems too loud sometimes. The keyboard seems empty
on the Japanese 1/24/95 video. I think the guitar should blend with the
keyboard as it does on the Power of Omens demo. The new album is going
to be great, and I'm glad this band is being talked on the Ytsejam. They
deserve a lot of credit.

They were available from Dream Disc, one week prior to me calling

I did ask her several times over several weeks and she continued to vacillate
between it's on order, it's on back-order, we'll send that when it comes in,
call back in a couple weeks and try again.
Again, that was my only complaint, and it is obviously a minor one. I will
continue to deal with Impulse and recommend them to others. I'll just try
to be a tad more clear about how I want out-of-stock items handled.

Hey fellow DT fans, I am new to this list and so I thought I would
post my first message. I have been a DT fan ever since I first saw the
video for Pull Me Under (on headbangers ball of all places). I also love
progressive music such as Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Savatage, and so on. I
also like many other types of music, such as Metal (Metallica, Testament,
Slayer), Political Bitch music, (Rage Against The Machine, Sex Pistols),
straight ahead Classic Rock, (Zep, The Who, Pink Floyd), and yes
"alternative", (Bush, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam). I am a guitar player of
10 years and I have Had the pleasure of meating John Petrucci (twice!) at
G.I.T. in Hollywood, and he is an AWESOME guitarist to hear in person. I
am currently obtaining my degree in Computer Information Systems from Boise
State University in Boise Idaho. Well, just thought I would say Hi! Later

I found this CD at Media Play. I remembered it from the Heady
Metal (http://pwp.starnetinc.com/corey/) page and it was "only"
$9.99 so I grabbed it. It is on Bachoven Music Works label
(an American distributor?) and was released in 1993. It is
self-titled.
Most progressive purists would not classify this as progressive
music. It is rock, not metal, and it is fairly straight-forward.
I would describe it more as "diverse" than progressive.
I think Mozart could be compared to Extreme, Queen, the
Police, or even Styx.
The singer is a lower-ranged tenor with excellent control.
His name is simply Adam. He has "effects out the wazoo" also.
He is a great singer as far as I can tell from this CD.
I think he has been identified as a singer on the Queen
tribute. There are great vocal harmonies on the disc as well,
done by Adam, Peter (the guitarist), James (the bassist), and
someone named D. Alexander.
The guitarist, Peter Perdichizzi, is very good. To continue
the Queen/Extreme comparison, his style is more riffed-based
like Brian May's than shred-based like Nuno's. He has enough
distortion to be popular and enough talent to be unpopular.
The distortion is done for effects not defects. I'm not a guitarist,
so I can't identify his entire rig by listening to the CD.
It's not in my liner notes.
The bass/drums/keys are all good, with nothing really splashy
or noteworthy. The bass was all simple rhythms with very little
fills and no soloing. I didn't really care for the snare tone.
I'm not a drummer so I can't really explain why - it just sounded
tinny and a bit over-synthesized. Adam plays keys also. They are
mostly piano (my humble ears think it is a real acoustic) with
some background synthesizers in some songs. His playing is not flashy,
yet competent.
The songs themselves are the standard formulaic verse/chorus/
verse/chorus/bridge/verse/coda compositions with emphasis on
melodies with hooks and strong vocal harmonies. The songs are catchy
and, at times, humorous. IMO standout tracks are:
_Speed_Train_ and _The_Shoe_.
There are two covers:
I Get A Kick Out Of You - original by Cole Porter of all people
Fortress Around Your Heart - original by Sting
this version sounds like Sting, though I've never heard
the original. My brother in law is a big Sting fan and
he says that Adam sounds exactly like Sting on this tune.
The CD is produced and mixed by Roy Thomas Baker. Forgive my
igorance, but why does this name seem familiar? Elvis?
I like the CD, but I'd probably classify it more as AOR (e-mail
me if you don't know what that means) than progressive rock.
It could have been a big hit in a different era. (doesn't that
sound familiar). At the risk of offending people, I would say
that Pat Daugherty would like this and Bill Bazjek(sp?) would
hate it. Offended people e-mail me privately or I will start
attaching multiple disclaimers to my e-mails too (since I have
sooooo little originality).
Are there any Mozart (the band) experts that could tell me
about any other releases this band may have. Thanks.

Type O is worth your while. They're a band that has this amazing attitude that I can't get enough of, where they'll blatantly shout in the face of the poseur media darlings that they're "selling out" and "just in it for the hype" and then put out an album like October Rust, which is a _considerable_ progression from Bloody Kisses, an album that, while good, was a BIT too rooted in "metal-goth".
Their albums...
"Slow Deep and Hard" - lots of fun, very raw and not moody at all. Contains the only known Type O GUITAR SOLO in a song! (In IKYFSE). Basically all about sex, sex, more sex, booze, partying, and more sex. Highlights are Gravity, which was just awesome, and Synthetic Division/I Know You're Fucking Someone Else, which gave us a taste of their future direction with that entire section in the middle/end.
"Bloody Kisses" - Doesn't age as well as October Rust. Some songs just work, some don't. I got tired of the title track and of Black No.1 (the first video/hit/whatever) fairly fast, and the second single, Christian Woman, aged only a little better. Their cover of Summer Breeze by Seals & Crofts is a blast. The pseudo-instrumentals work best on this album, they are Can't Lose You and Set Me On Fire. And the single best song on the album? Still "We Hate Everyone" from the non-gatefold CD.
"October Rust" - Pete & company warmed us up for this by telling us what a sellout album it was going to be, how they didn't care about songwriting and filled a CD with fluff for the money. Needless to say, I was floored by the intensity of this disc, how good it actually turned out to be, and how well the songs age. Early favourites Love You To Death, Burnt Flowers Fallen, and Red Water/Christmas Mourning have been replaced at the top of my Type O list by songs that started out lukewarm and just kept getting better with every listen. I can still listen to them over and over again and really dig it. The top tracks are definitely Die With Me, Green Man, Wolf Moon, and the Neil Young cover Cinnamon Girl.
Type O can't play like DT does, but they have a definitive edge in songwritin, song structuring, and the ability to create atmosphere. However that may change when we hear DT's new album.

I dunno, that's a close one. Josh plays keys to establish atmosphere and occasionally plays a piano accompaniment to a section. Kevin/Derek are usually positioned equal to the other instruments in driving the melody of any part of the song. Apples n' Oranges.

Did the Deftones do that at every show, or were you also unfortunate enough to witness the debacle at Desert Sky Pavilion? At least Type O plays in 2 weeks at the Electric Ballsack, for all us locals.

No, but someone who says "Spring won't come, the need of strife to struggle to be freed, from hard ground / the evening mists that creep and crawl will drench me in dew, and so drown" has my nod of approval. They didn't use a bunch of latin or scientific terminology, but they sure illustrated the atmosphere well, they put the listener right there at the scene. I can easily picture movies about most Type O songs. Every lyricist gets better as they go along (well, usually), and Type O is no different than Dream Theater in this manner. DT as Majesty and even as recently as WDADU were pretty undisciplined as songwriters. However Awake was a milestone album.

Whoo, this is creepy. Look way up above in this post at the songs I initially liked, and then grew a little weary of... and see if you don't move on the same way I did to the same others. To your credit, I must say you have good taste.

Also there is Pull Me Under, The Silent Man (studio) and The Silent Man (Live). The Caught in a Web video was never filmed, but European TV showed a live performance of it, and those of us on the lookout thought it was the video. The band has since confirmed that it is not.

Get a Smart & Friendly CD burner. Don't accept anything less. It's a Sony drive, it works perfectly right from the get go, and you'll never run into compatibility problems of any type or sort at any time. Avoid the HP 4020i if you can only because HP is releasing a better one in a month or so. And definitely avoid most other brands. I think there were acceptable Ricoh and Canon drives on the market a while back, but right now the choices are limited.
