Recently there's been a lot of talk about not-DT prog bands that are worth
checking out. One band that I have not heard mentioned here, and think should
be, is Phish. Their earlier stuff is definitely progressive, the musicians
are fantastic, and their style is totally unique. If you have not checked out
this band, I urge you to do yourself a favor and buy "A Picture of Nectar" or
"Junta" (a double disc). Trey Anastasio has a masters in jazz guitar, which
by itself means nothing, but if you listen to this music you'll appreciate its
harmonic complexity. And it's also very fun, inspiring music.

    Any other opinions?

    -Neil.

Funny, I seem to recall plugging this band and this demo in november and
december a coupla times with no response......even tried to put it in my
year end top 5 list that i sent to Syrinx (Mike Ostrich)....but he
wouldn't accept it becuz it wasn't commercially released.....

for those who received it recently, can someone e-mail me and tell me what
the bassist's e-mail address is (if it was on there)?

the dude gave an address and asked for comments, but i lost the package
too soon after i got the tape.....

You ALL missed the Tape Tree?
I would love to help you people but i'm already a little back logged on

Concerning the lie video...the place i got it from was Rock Video Monthly..
I don't even know if they still exist...if they do...ya might try back
    ordering it...but its highly unlikely

Oh yeah...with all the talk of new releases...not one person has
    mentioned Metallica?!?

If anyone has any information on where I can get some VHS tapes
that are in PAL format converted to the US Standard, it would be greatly
    appreciated.
I have two VHS tapes from The Netherlands chock full of DT stuff

Don't be annoyed by me doing this, but when someone posts
something like this i feel compelled to defend DreamDisc and Impulse
Records. I don't owe them allegiance, or work for the companies... I just
know that Noise has been screwing them over for a while, and there has
been no way for them to speed things up.

I'm too fuckin' lazy to do this by Private e mail, and I've gotten
like 25 requests for Impulse's info in the last two days, so I'll post it

I like these guys a lot. Their web page doesn't offer online ordering,
and their online catalog is over three months outdated (especially when he
gets anywhere from 3-15 new titles in a week). The best bet currently is
to call them or write me and I'll call them since it's local. We're
talking to them about setting up a secure server package so they can do
online credit card transactions... maybe that will help you all out soon.

If you order from them, tell them you heard of them from Chris on the
Dream Theater Internet Mailing List so they can gauge how effective or
useful the internet marketing would be. No I don't get discounts for it
(which you can ask them if you don't believe me. :)

But alas, it was a joke. If it amuses you or anyone else to talk Type O
on the list, go for it. I'll just jump in and drop some third rate witty
    remarks here and there. :)

Well, I think someone a long time ago agreed to be the
"unofficial" notifyer in sending people the correct instructions
on how to sub, unsub from the list, but I'm not sure if he's
still doing it. I already sent her the instructions (I have

What amazes me is that people who've been in the 'Net, should

the correct way to get things done. I figured it out almost
right away when I first got 'Net access. Oh well...

I think my drummer at one time MacGyvered his. ( I think he got
those pads now) He just duct taped the bottoms of em if I remember.
Hell, it works on ductwork, why not drums? I'll ask him though.
Maybe he didn,t and it may screw em up. Lemme get back with ya on

I think I,d said it last. I never saw that. Someone mentioned when
the album was prepped for re-release in November that it was a drum
machin sonce Kevin Soffera hadn,t joined the band yet (and now he
left again, what a pisser) Anyway, maybe these guys played somewhere
or programmed the machines. (shrug) Cuz there are alot of parts on
the album if I listen for it it sounds like a drum machine to me when
I listen to the cymbals. Too fake sounding and besides, each high
hat hit sounds the exact same to me. Ne variations anywhere. (shrug)

can anyone help me. My apostrophe's fell down. And why is

You know the drill you if you trade and don't want to get ripped off read
this but if you want to get ripped off, hey have fun, and skip this.

*Al Balkewicz(who says he is going to complete the trade after almost 3 years!)

*Jermey Haynes aka Sue Moscardini(is this person still on the jam?)

*CD Cellar adversities about stuff they don't have in stock(which I found
out is the norm for many CD dealers...).

If there are _any_ mistakes about these people or if you disagree with what
I have here PLEASE email ME(not the jam!).

Okay now I know you people want others to learn from your mistakes and not
get ripped off by the same guy. Well here's what you do!
    1) Give me the person's
      a. name
      b. email address
      c. real address
2)Tell me what the problem was.
3)Tell me where you met the person(the ytsejam, some newsgroup) and if you
know where they hang out at(any other newsgroups, mailing lists, or even
    chat rooms).
4)Tell me what was it you were trading.

Well hopefully next time I post one of these things I can have some
    recommendations for some CD dealers!

Randall Braun supplied the following information, and here's my input on the
    topic.

    >CD Universe:

Excellent service. Quick to ship. Good selection, but not a lot of Prog imports.

    >CDNow:

Also very good. Similar selection to that of CD Universe.

    >German Music Express:

Excellent service. Quick to ship. Lots of goodies like Angra, Symphony X,
etc. Only $3 for shipping regardless of the size of your order.

    >Tunnel Records:

Controversial business. I've seen lots of people bitch about them on the
usenet, but apparently it's because they don't stock much of what's on their
HUGE list of bootlegs. So it takes them a long time to get stuff, and people
get angry. I decided to test the water myself and ordered something recently
despite all the hub-bub. They acknowledged receipt of my order, and now I'm
patiently waiting for the goods. If I get robbed, you'll be sure to hear
    about it.

    >CD SHOP GOLD / SOUND+ACTION:

Lots of bootlegs, BUT they refuse to reply to any of my email queries. Also,
since they are in Japan and do not accept credit cards, we U.S. folks need
to get an international money order or wire them the money (which is
expensive as balls). Seems too risky to me. I won't take my chances with them.

    >APOCALYPSE Music:

They have been discussed here recently, and the consensus is that they are
    bad news. Avoid them.

    Be good.

Add Marillion's _This Strange Engine_, due sometime in April.
I think the new Enchant, _Wounded_, is due in the US in March/April.
Also there's a double CD concept album on the way from IQ, but I don't know
    when.

I can answer the question about tuning your toms.

    1. Undo all the lugs on the tom that you wish to tune.
    2. Take off the drum head.
    3. Hold the drum head level with your eyes, if it isn't perfectly straight,
throw it away and buy a new one. (about $11-15.00 at a music store) check
the rim of the head too. If it's warped trash it. If it's good:
    4. Buy a box of tissues and a roll of duct tape.
    5. On the bottom of the head:
                            1. Fold over about 8 tissues (once in half and fold
    once lengthwise.
                            2. Take the duct tape and tape the tissues to the
    bottom of the head.
    6. Reattach the head the tom and tighten to disired taughtness. DO NOT
OVERTIGHTEN this will cause a warping of the head and make sure that the
when you tighten the head you alternate lugs. (i.e. start at the bottom and
go to the other side and tighten.) Do it slowly, so that you get even
    tightening.

    OR:

Repeat steps 1-3 and instead of tissues: Use carpet pading ($2-3.00 a
square foot.) and cover all the wood inside the tom. Use short staples to
affix the pading to the wood inside the tom.

    DO NOT:
Do this to a snare drum. It will sound aweful. Only do it to toms
or cymbal (on cymbals use just duct tape ripped in half and make an "X"
across the cymbal if the cymbal sucks)

Any other questions or suggestions e mail me directly. Later, Jeremy

Subject: DT after strep throat is very very ugly
    Message-ID: <32f2da3636f1002@cliff.ou.edu>

I've had strep throat the past couple of weeks. Really nice
welcome-back-to-school present, m? I usually sing while driving to and from
school, which is an hour each way. So after four months of two hours per
day "rehearsal", I was doing pretty well. Then came Christmas break, then
    came strep throat.

So we finally get to the part where I mention that I'm bellering along with
KJLB, on _Awake_, and "Voices" comes on. Sounded like giving birth through
    my tonsils.

"Voices discussing mehhhhhhhhhhxxxxkkkk ack ack shit!"

Hey, that ain't how it goes.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get back to that nice clear
sound? My crossover has shifted way low, and I sound more like Michael
Hutchence than Annie Lennox. At least I can do that growly thing like
everyone else now. (OOh, big achievement!) Over the past week it's gotten
better, so is it just practice practise (spell it how you like) or is there
    a quick cure?

    Frustrated,

    Jazzmin
