Looks like I have to clear this up one more time. Today's lesson on
    message headers:

    > Date: Wed, 2 Jul 1997 02:26:49 -0400 (EDT)
    > From: The Digital Man <cmerlo@uvm-gen.emba.uvm.edu>
    > To: A Pleasant Shade of Ytse <ytsejam@ax.com>
    > Subject: machine names
    > Message-ID: <Pine.SUN.3.96.970702022239.29113A-100000@griffin.emba.uvm.edu>

This was a real post from me. You can tell in a couple of ways. First,
it says "The Digital Man <cmerlo@uvm-gen.emba.uvm.edu>" in the From: line.
The impostor hasn't (yet) figured out how to get the real name to say The
Digital Man, or how to get it to show up before the address.

The To: line says "A Pleasant Shade of Ytse <ytsejam@ax.com>". As far as
I can tell, no one's nearly that clever. :)

The important line, however, is the Message-ID line. It starts
"Pine.Sun.3.96". This means that I composed this message using the mail
program called Pine, version 3.96, on a computer running the Sun operating
    system (Unix).

The end of that line says "@griffin.emba.uvm.edu". Griffin, as I
explained before, is a machine on the emba system. uvm-gen is only a mail
    reflector. I can't send mail from uvm-gen.

Now, from the same digest, here's a post from the impostor.

    > Date: Wed, 2 Jul 97 02:51:52 -0400
    > From: cmerlo@uvm-gen.emba.uvm.edu (Christopher R. Merlo)
    > Subject: CD recommendation, no, a CD force-feeding
    > Message-ID: <9707020651.AA01422@uvm-gen.emba.uvm.edu>

First of all, notice the *complete* lack of a To: line. Next, notice that
his/her/their "Date" line does not say "(EST)" at the end, as mine does.

Notice the use of my real name in the From: line (instead of "The Digital
Man"), and the fact that it's after the address, not before.

Notice the bad grammar in the subject. I don't mean to sound like a
tightass here, but my grammar is always far better than that (close to
perfect if I'm anywhere near awake).

But the important line is the "Message-ID" line. First of all, it's much
shorter. (That's because it's fake.) It doesn't tell you what program,
what version, or what OS was used to compose this message. I have no idea
how they got the "uvm-gen" in there, but, as I said earlier, I can't send
mail from a machine that I can't log in to.

The impostor *has* stopped misquoting Neil in my .sig file, finally.

Oh, and just for the record...

    > I just bought the new CD by Downtrodden Warrior, 'Slidin', and I must
    >
    > I also just got the Eternity-X sampler in the mail. I honestly think

I've never heard anything by either of these bands.

I challenge this impostor to come clean before I catch you (you *do* know
that I'm a month away from an M.S. in Computer Science, right?), because
your early mistakes gave up a lot about you. I'll know who you are soon
anyway, so why not give up now before it gets worse?

To the Jam: I'm really sorry that this is necessary. I hope you
understand the need for me to make sure that it's clear what I post and
what I don't. I sincerely hope that this sort of post will be completely
    unnecessary soon. Thanks for understanding.

I agree. I liked the sampler quite a bit and I'll be getting
their newest CD (which, judging from the sampler, seems to have the
most prog influences). I didn't pay close attention to the lyrics,
but I really enjoyed the vocals as well as the music.

Cinderella has a new compiation CD out and Jackyl has a new album

Metal never left. Glam's dead because the music sucked. Kind of like

I'd highly recommend both Superior and Shadow Gallery to
anyone who likes Rush, DT and Fates Warning. I especially love
Superior and it has continued to grow on me. I've grown a bit tired
of Shadow Gallery, though I still consider "Carved in Stone" a
good album. Both bands have a good, heavy sound and a progressive
    style.
I'd also highly recommend Marillion, but be warned that they
have a very different style than DT or Rush. They don't have a very
heavy sound (not metal). Instead they build power from their overall
sound and wonderful vocals. I'd recommend first trying either
"Misplaced Childhood" or "Clutching at Straws". Both are among my
favorite albums. It may take a while to get used to their style
but it's worth it. Try those albums first since some of their other,
newer ones are more mellow and may not appeal to you as much.
            Enjoy!

                                    Steve

P.S. Superior has one album and Shadow Gallery has two:

    Superior -- "Behind"

Shadow Gallery -- "Carved in Stone"
    Shadow Gallery -- self-titled

I heard the best comeback line last night. Here goes..."Hey, at least I

hard from this I literally drove off the road at this one.

Well I got these awesome tapes(thanks again Mape). And the Angra song on
it was Nothing To Say. Now maybe he doesn't have "*any* accent," to tell
the truth I haven't heard everything by them just this song. But I can
pretty much understand what he is saying without laughing at his
pronounication(sp?)(hey are you laughing at my spelling :) ). And when I
say he sounds like Zak Stevens I really meant on that one part "Leaving
for evermore...Nothing to say." Well maybe just on the Nothing to say
line, really. But when I first listened to the tape I didn't have the
song list, so, I thought that it was Zak Stevens old band. I later
learned that it was Angra! AND THEY RULE!!!! [evil laughter]

Shadow Gallery's first release is "Shadow Gallery" is available only
through Magna Carta. For 14.98 or something + s/h. The address should be
in your liner notes of "Carved in Stone"

Haven't been on in a while, so I figure I'll throw some
random stuff your way to comment on:

1.) Man, is Bafu back in prime form once again....he had me
rolling on that last post........*sigh* if only I
                    were that witty.

2.) Saw "Angel Heart" (Mickey Rourke, Lisa Bonet) again after
seeing it years back......man, that movie is disturbing,
but absolutely great....definitely on my Top 5 list...

3.) Brought out I Mother Earth's "Dig" after a long hiatus.
I am SO pissed that these guys are no more....this is
one of my faves, too. Which leads me to a question...
I've heard that the band broke up, and I've also heard
that just the singer left.......does anyone have any
info. on what the Status of IME is right now??????

4.) To whoever mentioned Shadow Gallery and Superior.....I
would definitely get Superior's "Behind" (that sounds
weird) - not only is it a kick-ass disc, but you'd
also be supporting a fellow 'Jammer, Bernd Basmer (where
the hell ya been, Bernd?)........I definitely recommend
it. As for Shadow Gallery, I have "Carved in Stone",
but for some reason, it hasn't done anything for me.
Since everyone really seems to like it on the 'Jam
though, I would take their word for it. I myself am
going to give it another try......

5.) OK, someone explain to me the difference between
                    the following:

                    1.) Anacrusis
                    2.) Anathema

I have both their discs, and I don't like either one of them,
but haven't listened through ALL of the album..just wondering where
I went wrong, and how the hell I possibly recognized their names
            at the store........

6.) It's good to hear that Whitewolf is back, and in better
shape. Hopefully, the Jams have helped him out through
                    a tough period......

7.) D-man........which is worse, being "out"ed by an imposter,
or the kidney stones? I know both of 'em are a pain (one
in the ass (no pun intended) and one in the abdomen)....

8.) CD reviews to come soon..........

9.) IMPORTANT NOTICE: Anyone in the Buffalo area, there is
a HUGE party in Corfu, NY (outskirt of Buffalo) on
July 3rd......the name is POGOFEST, and if you're going
to be there randomly, just ask around in town somewhere,
apparently everyone knows about it (between the ages of
18-25). And if you're there, ask for me -- I'm driving
up from Jersey just to be there.......

                                            later,

                                                    Al

    uh oh!

    >I don't think I wanna know. :)

    That makes two of us.

    >Okay Vince, I think we GET THE POINT! You are the ultimate, coolest, >most kickass metalhead in the universe! Metal rules!

First of al, Vince is a good guy. Just becausee he has an opinion that's different from others doesn't mean he's a jerk or anything.

    >Actually, maybe it's just because those bands suck, they're old, >they're a dime a dozen, and no one likes that type of music anymore. > Just a thought.

Or maybe the general record buying public has an IQ in the single digits and wouuldn't know good music if it jumped up and bit them in the ass.

    >BTW, Motley Crue??? What the hell? I thought things were pretty bad >with all the Megadeth talk, but Motley Crue? We don't care people!

No, *YOU* don't care. I don''t care if Motley Crue falls off the face of the earth, but some people here like them. It's called diversity.

    >This is a Dream Theater list! That means we prefer hearing about >Dream Theater or other PROG music!

So, this is is about discussing bands *you* feel are DT or Prog related? I see a trend here.

    >You know, like Rush, Fates Warning, etc.? That's PROG!

UGH! Not again! "You can't talk about that, it's not prog!" Followed by the endless "This isn't prog, but *this* is" thread.

    >Not cock-rock, not Motley Crue, not even metal, but P-R-O-G (not >Prague)!

So, by that reasoning we can't discuss DT either. After all, this is a *prog* list, and DT isn't just prog. The last album had straight ahead Metal (Lie) as well as some hip hop flava to it (6:00). And you can't honestly sayThe Silent Man is prog no matter how you analize it.

I'm glad you posted. I wrote that because I was making my list of people who can't take a joke and congrats! You made #1 on the list. >Motley stopped using hairspray to any outrageous extent by the >beginning of the Dr. Feelgood era and had completely done away >with it before Decade Of Decadence came out.

Ok, DoD was pretty much put out so the Crue could get rid of Vince. Dr. Feelgood was a good record, but what's "She Goes Down" about?

I saw an interview with Nikki after they fired Vince Neil Wharton and he said they fired him because Vince wanted to go in the direction of bands like Poison, and they wanted to get heavier.

    >In addition, they had dropped both the glam and the leather image by >the time Feelgood came out, right as a lot of bands started copying that

    >look.

The Crue changed their look with every album, but the music pretty much stayed the same. TFFL (Leathur) and SATD are great, after that they should've just quit.

    >And if you had ever read the lyrics to a lot of Crue songs, you would see >that although they have their share of "Girls, Girls, Girls" type of songs, >they also have a lot of provatative lyrics as well, even as early as "Shout >At The Devil," not that there is anything wrong with writing about "elevator >sex," (which was done by Aerosmith, not Motley).

I was referring to "Ten Seconds To Love." Just in case you're not sure, it's on the Shout At The Devil album released in 1983. And of course there's nothing wrong with songs about sex, but the songwriting changed dramatically when Corabi joined the band. Why that is I don't know, but that's how I see it.

Hello, On Hamming it up: >I had it to where I hand both hands down, independently, and could get >them to work together for a few seconds, but that was about it. It's >ridiculously difficult for me to pull that off...I can't split my brain >well enough to do that really contrapuntal stuff.

Yeah, no kidding. I thought at first, "hey it'll be just like Satriani's Midnight" but no sir. I got to the same point as you (learning it on guitar though), and realized Stu's powers are beyond my understanding. I just like when I get to the open chord strumming part, then I feel like at least half a man...:)

    >HOW DO I GET OFF THIS MAILING LIST?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Well, I hear if you die, then Skadz has to unsub you. Aside from that, I suggest posting e-mails with fake addresses saying Ptacek is a nice guy. Welcome back Chris!

    >Hey hey hey, let's not forget Michael Wagener's work with Extreme

And the inimitable Saigon Kick... I always thought of this guy as the prime 80's metal producer. I think I have another disc he produced. I'll have to take a look, but I think it's Prunella Scales...

    >Plus I now know Dr. Mosh's real name. It's Jeremy Haynes.
