Very cool choices. When I took music in school, we listened to King of the
Delta Blues for a week and it was pure torture. I couldn't really appreciate
it cause I was stuck in my "it's gotta be in E harmonic minor or it ain't
cool" phase. It took a few blues shows to really bring me back into reality.
I still find certain tracks a little too *raw* for my tastes, but it's
definitely worth a try for anyone who has heard him before

Actually, Dogman is the least King's-X-y of all the KX albums. On
Dogman, only Fool You and Cigarettes seem to capture the essence of the
band, and then only in amounts not quite as full as on other albums.

If you want to experience King's X and make them a part of your
musical pantheon (add them to the soundtrack of your life, as it were)
then you need to hear the following songs. Most KX fans have all the CDs
and will readily play them for you, but they're best heard by yourself
    without distractions.

from Out Of The Silent Planet:
            What Is This?
            King
            Shot of Love
            Visions
The OOTSP material is unrefined and the band is not fully developed as
songwriters, but the energy is fantastic, and their spiritual roots are
explored straight away (most obviously on King).

    from Gretchen Goes to Nebraska:
            Over My Head
            Summerland
The Difference (In The Garden of St. Anne's on the Hill)
            Pleiades
GGTN is KX's best album, probably followed by Ear Candy, which fell just
a notch short. I picked the best four, but they weren't very easy picks.
:) Over My Head is the peak KX song live, of course. Pleiades is the most
Galactic Cowboys-ish work they've done (or perhaps GC derived their song
from its influence). The Difference is a masterpiece of songwriting and
harmony, and Summerland just kicks ass.

    from faith hope love:
We Are Finding Who We Are
            It's Love
I'll Never Get Tired Of You
            I Can't Help It
            Faith Hope Love
            Legal Kill
I broke my four-song limitation here because once you get past the first
two (the masterpieces of the album), the next four are equally excellent.
GGTN explored more of KX's hopes and dreams, and this album brings their
spirituality, faith, and emotions out full blast... and that puts off some
listeners. Most DT fans will dig it though... it's the mainstreamers that
find it hard to grab. It's Love, KX's most successful single ever, is
actually a very very good song, as opposed to being "radio friendly but
mediocre otherwise". INGTOY was the first dance song at my wedding, so you
can imagine how I feel about that one. Melissa's favourite band is KX.
They tie DT at the top for me. I Can't Help It is just so kickin' and
positive, and well written. Faith Hope Love is a 9-minute marathon that
starts very Galactic-Cowboys-ish and becomes more of an instrumental as it
goes on, but is just very enjoyable to hear. Finally, Legal Kill, perhaps
the only pro-life rock song in existence, is actually a very exquisite
song in addition to being a religious and political statement of belief.

    from King's X:
            The Big Picture
            The World Around Me
            Black Flag
As you may note, I couldn't even pick a fourth from this album. The
album doesn't suck... it's just not as awesome as the others. The three I
_did_ include are quite good. This was the "heaviest" album at its time,
and only Dogman is heavier. The lyrical work on this album is actually
very good. Some of the tunes are crafted well, some just don't stand out.

    from Dogman:
            Fool You
            Cigarettes
            Pillow
            Complain
The heaviest and least-alike album of the six, this CD really wouldn't
make a good intro to the band. The first two songs are the most typical of
the band and Fool You itself is very very good... sounds almost like it
didn't belong on this album. Pillow and Complain are the best of the
"heavy" version of KX. Pillow itself is awe-inspiring in concert, because
they lay it on so think.

    from Ear Candy:
            The Train
            Mississippi Moon
            Life Going By
            Looking for Love
This album is probably second-best to GGTN, possibly tied for the spot
with FHL. There isn't a dud on the entire album... I could have named
Sometimes, A Box, Picture, Run, Thinking and Wondering, or half a dozen
others and it'd still be a good recommendation. As for my picks above,
"The Train" is particularly relevant because we know KX was having trouble
continuing as a band without support from the industry. Mississippi Moon
is just a positive, upbeat song... well crafted, and highly resembling I
Can't Help It, It's Love, and Fool You. Life Going By... deserves a post
all its own. See my "Thoughts of 1996" in a Ytsejam back-issue for more on
that. And Looking for Love, the radio single of the album, is just plain
fun to listen to, and it _does_ take talent to make songs like that.

Anyway that's the skinny on what KX to listen to. This goes for
all Jammers... if you're not into the band already, do yourself a favor
and listen to these songs. You'll be glad you did. Plus, most KX albums
can be had for $5-7 at used CD shops, except Ear Candy, which is actually
rather hard to find and had a very low print run.

    >poor representation of their work? I can't believe all the rave reviews
    >of these guys based on my hearing Dogman.

"Dogman" is, by far, the LEAST representative of their work. It's a Brenden
O'Brien-produced album, and he has this habit of making everyone's record a
sorta raw, messy sounding effort. Some people like it. I don't. I contend
that Pearl Jam's last three records would be a much more enjoyable listening
experience if they sounded a little more like "Ten." I guess I just like
slick production, for the most part. Still, I think "Dogman" is a cool
record, and that King's X is a tremendous band.

Anyhow, I'm on the King's X mailing list ("Gretchen Goes to the Internet")
and the concensus is clearly that "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska" is the best of
their albums. Beyons that, I'd recommend their last album, "Ear Candy," and
their first album "Out of the Silent Planet." Actually, since they're are
only a couple of others I'll mention them...."faith hope love" I'd slot
between "Out of the Silent Planet" and "Dogman." Their self-titled album is
quite popular with the hardcore fans, but it's my least favorite of all of
    their work.

I'm writing this in response to Brian Wherry's post about Royal Hunt... BTW
    (Hi Brian!)

    >Anyone ever heard of a band called Royal Hunt?

As far as I know, they are a Danish band. (although, I think the
    keyboardist is Russian)

The keyboardist and vocalist both won awards in the,"Burrn Magazine"
readers poll. The music sounded somewhat like symphonic rock.... very
keyboard oriented... in fact, I think the keyboardist writes most of the
material. The music also seemed to contain some pop elements as well.

    Hope this helps.

    Be well.

    >>>>>>>>Out of Lurk Mode<<<<<<<<

IMHO Shadow Gallery does have a rather unique sound. Not at all like DT, Queensryche or Savatage or any other band I've ever checked out. SG strive for a Neo Classical sound and style and pull it off in some ways. Unfortunately they possess that 80's quality that I never liked : A thin sound with little or no dynamic range. The drumming is verrry thin and does not draw me into the rhythmic changes the band does introduce from time to time. Thematically they deal with epic and noble ideas like Maiden did with Powerslave, especially the epic "Rime". The guitars are interesting without being heavy or forward in the mix, sorta like WDADU except not as imaginative. As for the keyboards-If you dig keys then you will like what Gary Wehrkamp contributes-Lush melodies, great themes and blistering solos. Hey, if DT ever needs a keyboardist, Gary would be perfect. If you like Marillion and Dt and Yes and Malmsteen and don't mind a recording similar to WDADU in terms of soundstage and dynamics then you may like SG. Not real heavy but lush and imaginative. Good mood music, especially all the keyboard interludes between songs. Enuff...

BTW I have to say thanks to everyone on the Jam and I mean This: You all have turned me on to so many bands and styles that I never would have discovered on my own. Way To Go!!

    Now Playing:

    1) Dickinson-Accident of Birth 2) Angra-Holyland 3) Fates-Pleasent Shade Of Gray 4) DT-Awake (Best Recording of All Time) 5) Megadeth-Rust In Peace

Mike, that was an great overview of the band's albums. Your KX tastes are very similar to mine. :) Good to see someone else like FHL because I think it is underrated by many fans. There is a wide variety of "best" KX album rankings, and I think that is due to when the person started to listen to KX. I started on FHL, and was enthralled. Most of the fans that started on the debut album like more of the classic KX sound (first three), while Dogman era listeners will dig Dogman or Gretchen and have finicky taste on the rest of the albums. The general concensus is that Gretchen is the best one.

Whatever it may be, anyone wondering which album to start with should go to a local used CD store and find out for themselves. The only thing is that I never have seen Gretchen or Out of the Silent Planet in the bargain bin.

From what I've heard, SG has two albuns ("Carved in Stone" and the self-titled one). Don't trust me that much, I don't really know for sure. I've heard some stuff from CiS, and it's really good: prog-metal, with a more piano-oriented sound (does that exist? :) ), heavy and very melodic, very nice stuff... I'll be receiving the album in some days (BTW, if you're planning to buy stuff in the INet, try CDUniverse at www.cduniverse.com . They have good prices and VERY good shipping costs, and you can also listen to some samples of what you're buying in RealAudio). Superior has one album named "Behind", and it's one of the most ass-kicking albuns I've heard lately. Excelent prog-metal album, maybe the heaviest you'll find among prog-metal bands, a must. Buy it yesterday.

    > > Rush/DT/Fates Warning..........also, I heard several people on here > praising > > Marillion...if anyone cares to share, what's their collection and > sound like?

It's just my opinion (if Itchy is still around, don't start those flames again, ok? :) ). I really didn't like their sound (I listened to "Afraid of Sunlight", I think that was it...), and it was a very "soft" stuff, lots of clean tones, well, just not my favorite ind of sound... But, as many guys here like them, maybe you should listen to them and make your own decisions.

In John Petrucci's instructional video, There's a nice heavy riff or power chord passage that he's playing with the rest of the band just before he talks about being at berklee and stuff. What song is that from??? I don't think I've heard it before.

    thanks, Paul

    Howdy Friends -

There has some Shadow Gallery interest on the Jam as of late. I hope I can clear some things up. As others have mentioned, the band has a self-titled album out that has just been re-released by Magna Carta, but to the best of my knowledge it is only available through mail-order. It's really amazing considering it's a debut.

As good as that album is, though, it does not even COME CLOSE to the greatness of "Carved In Stone"! CIS is literally one of my top ten favorite CD's of all time. The album was rated by some European metal mags as Album Of the Year in '95. When I heard it, it was the most I had gotten excited over a newly discovered band since the Mighty Dream Theater knocked me on my arse back in '92. I HIGHLY recommend this disk. If I had to classify it (and it's not easy since they have their own sound), I think it's somewhere between the prog crunch of DT and the symphonic power of Zack Stevens-era Savatage. Supposedly, they should have a new album out fairly soon, but I've been hearing that for a LONG time now. The tentative title I heard is "Tyranny".

I found the band's official website on the web: www.epix.net/~kbhansen

I think that there are some sound bytes to download if you need an earful. I hope this helped!

Now Playing: Sepultura "The Roots Of Sepultura" (Bonus Disk)... If you're a Sepultura fan and can get a hold of this release, do it! A bonus 20-track CD of rare, unreleased, and live trax, many of which are different than on their new America B-Sides disk "Blood Rooted".
