: Even cool guitarists have it. What would Satch be without those long,
: wah-ed legato patterns? Vai without Aeolian and his Eventide? Petrucci
: without his "chromazones" and distinctive neck pick-up tone? Buckethead
: without his diminished arpeggios, eight-fingered tapping and poultry?
    ;-)
    :

Satch and Vai have very characteristic sounds... but it varies and changes.
Compare Satch's playing on 'Surfing' w/ the self-titled CD. Does it sound
the same? I don't think so. It sounds like Joe, but it's different in
certain ways. And we've practically seen Petrucci evolved b4 our eyes. B4
his solos were a lot more segmented (first a little string-skipping, now
some sweeping, and now a typical speed-picking line). With time his style
has become more fluid. The solos from the new songs seem to have more of a
'jamming feel' to it... and there are certain quirks that have
changed...those things you really can't out a name on.

: Yngwie plays what he loves, like all these other guys, and continues in
    the
: style he loves, like all these other guys. And he never changes to
: accomodate a fad like grunge, new punk, brit (spit!) pop and so on.

yes I respect him for that.

: And I love the guy, absolutely love him. Sure, you can't listen to it
    all
: the time, but if you get in the mood and choose to spin the Seventh Sign,
: you know EXACTLY what you're getting.

and that's EXACTLY why I haven't bought any of his CD's since Rising Force.
Why bother if it's all in there already.

The last thing I want from Yngwie is for him to change his style... but
I'd just liek it if he evolved a little. So the harmonic-minor is a very
dramatic.... but it loses its dramatic touch if it's used all the time.
Yngwie has said that he knows all there is about theory... well i'd
appreciate it if he used that knowledge more effectively. I've always
preferred artists that evolve with time... they listen to new music, and
naturally add what they like to their own personal styles, still sounding
like themselves. DT is one of these bands in case you havn't noticed.

: Uhm ... I dunno how to say this , but ... Brave is SUCH a bore.
: Hogarth together with that Helmer dude write some horrible lyrics ('Hard
: as love, baby...' - man , that sux!)

that song is written in the point of view of a guy who's hitting on the
girl on which 'Brave is based on.

: now, mike: check this out, y'all: of course we don't assume peart and
: sherinian are......how shall we say "into telefunken u-47s".
    :

    "leather"

    "warren cucuruuuullo"
    "kinda young, kinda wow"

    hehe

    BTW, all these
    stop-the-gay-thread-this-has-nothing-to-do-with-DT-but-here's-my-view-on-hom
osexuality-anyways posts are getting real tiresome.

Ok, I've been doin' some thinkin' (those who know me realize this is a
bad sign) and I decided that whoever came up with the word "secular"
must have been an arrogant holier-than-thou asshole. Should there really
be a word to describe ALL music that's not christian, when the majority
of music in the world isn't even about religion?
      And now.........

                MY IDEA :) <insert trumpet fanfare here>

YTSE brethren (and sisteren) of the world unite in song (preferably in
7/8) and listen to my word. I think that we should come up with a word
to describe all music that we don't consider progressive. So, instead of
bashing somebodies musical tastes for being punk, or grunge, or pop, we
can just have one simple word to describe it all. Then instead of
    sounding like Progsnobs (tm) saying:

"I only listen to progressive music"

we can sound like nice open minded informed music listeners with well
    rounded tastes by saying:

"I listen to all music but _____(insert word here)"

So, you see how much easier things would be? So I'm interested in
hearing everybody's idea of what such a word should be. Because who
better to make such an important decision than the followers of the
    almighty YTSE-JAM?
Or, if you think this is the stupidest idea you've ever heard, feel
free to flame the hell out me, and tell me what a jerk I must be to
think of something this dumb. It doesn't matter to me, I'm just curious
as to what sort of words we can come up with.

Yes, I'm still around. :) Sort of. It's now a long-distance call for me
to access my ISP (long story), so Jams pile up in my mailbox, mostly
unread; once in a while I sort through some of 'em.

I did happen to catch this post. I apologize for dredging up the subject
again, but being an Ally, I felt one of my increasingly rare needs to
respond to something on the list.

Michael Coghlan: << If you were to honestly, with mild determination
consider all the facts about homosexuality most of you would conclude that
this is a perversion (one of many) of humanity. [snip] Women and men are
made for each other and in more ways than just anatomically. >>

Isn't it funny how the prostate gland, otherwise known as the male G-spot,
is located approximately a penis-length up the anus?

Isn't it funny that lesbians currently have the lowest rate of AIDS?
That's the safest sex you'll get next to abstinence... or maybe just
giving/receiving blow jobs, though even that's a tiny bit risky, too. ;)

<< It would be nice for all of the homos/lesbians and other persons who
like to perform unnatural acts with their body and other peoples bodies to
get back in the closet and lock the door. >>

I'd rather they didn't -- a fairly substantial percentage of my friends are
either gay or bisexual, and I like 'em out of the closet just fine. I'd
much rather stuff YOU in a closet and lock the door so that you can't
spread your narrowminded bigotry. But that would be repressing your right
to free speech, wouldn't it? So I can only hope everyone else recognizes
your words for the hate speech it is.

    << Being a gay isn't "bad", it's abnormal >>

Wolves do it. Cats do it. Dolphins do it. Chimps do it -- hell, chimps
give each other blow jobs for fun, because it feels good. Homosexuality is
far more normal than your bigoted attitude -- though it's not surprising in
the least, coming from someone with your history of being a religious
    proselytute.

You have no "facts," Michael. You're welcome to spew your hate-filled
stereotypes, but you make it abundantly clear that you are wholly ignorant
of homosexuality. I won't go into what I think of your religion likely
being a huge perpetrator of that, because I am well aware there are other
Christians on this list (and friends of mine IRL) who aren't even remotely
homophobic, and I have no wish to offend them; my religious criticisms are
irrelevant here. If someone's gay, then it's strictly between them and
their god -- and none of *your* damn business.

A couple of selections from the defense team:

Mike Bahr: << Michael Coghlan's opinions may not be popular, and I don't
necessarily agree with any of them, but he has a backbone... a spine... he
knows how he feels and he sticks to it. >>

Funny how I've seen a dozen posts of this sort following Michael's post,
yet during the little flame war started on my own equally unpopular opinion
on suicide back in January, only one or two people publicly stuck up for me
for standing up for what I believed, and only a few more in private.

    Hmmm. ::shrug::

(no, I'm not picking on you, Mike, I was just using your post as an
    example. ;)

He's more than welcome to his opinion, and he's more than welcome to
express it. I went through something similar with the suicide thing. The
people who disagreed with me also had every right to try and skewer me for
it, just as those of us who think Michael Coghlan is a homophobic scumbag
have a right to skewer him. :)

David Whitaker: << I didn't see Coghlan spewing hate towards anybody. If
I recall, he, in more or less words, says he hates the sin and loves the
sinner. And in no way did he come across as hating ANYBODY on the
    jam. >>

Read his post again. Try to read it from the perspective of a person who
is gay, who has NO CHOICE in the matter because it's biological (he can no
more be attracted to someone of the opposite sex than those of us who are
heterosexual can be attracted to someone of the same sex), who likely has
been persecuted by his friends, his family, and his co-workers, denied the
sanctity and the many legal advantages of marriage to the person he loves,
denied benefits for his partner (unless he happens to work for Disney); who
is considered an abomination by Christianity.

All because he happens to love someone of his own gender through no
    conscious choice of his own.

Read Michael's post from this perspective and tell me again that he's not
    spewing hate.

I've seen the ravages of homophobia upon the people it afflicts -- this
attitude more so than anything else is what's sick and unnatural.

"Hate the sin, love the sinner" is no better than a sugar-coating for the
bigotry underneath. When he refers to homosexuality as unnatural and a
perversion, and demands that gays lock themselves back in the closet,
that's spewing hate. You don't have to be blunt to be a bigot.

Jaime the Dragon, making her one of her rare and brief but LOUD
    appearances... :)

A bunch of escaped convicts in a hijacked plane singing a song by a band that was KILLED in a plane crash.

Ah, but how many ACOS's could one listen to before the September 23rd release date for the new album? Keep in mind that if the last one goes over into the 23rd, like "it won't end until 12:06am on Sept. 23," it's okay, it still counts towards the total.

That's RipZero. A man with a Subject: line that hides absolutely nothing. No riddles, no double entendres, no appropriately-chosen song titles. I could learn a thing or two here.

    > you can rape them up the ass with a garden utensil, but you wont change > them.

That depends on whether it's the pole-end of a shovel or a three-pronged Garden Weasel(tm). They might get used to the life of a scarecrow, or then again they might never be able to sit down again.

    > so either drop it, or put a bunch of duct tape over your ass and pray > when you go to sleep at night.

THAT'S why God's not listening to me! All this time all I needed was to seal a few more orifices shut! Instant prayer-validation!

    Gods Of Metal

In tbe beginning of June (the 7th exactly), the heaviest metal festival of the year took place in Milano (Palavobis) in Italy. I'm a french metal maniac living in Paris, and I get the opportunity to go there. How could I miss a such great event? We leave Paris at 23 pm friday 6th and we arrived in Milano 14 hours later crossing swizterland and so on. In the bus, nearly 70 persons were there, and among them a lot of press and radio journalists, or people working in music buisness such as Olivier Garnier which is ANGRA's "promoter" in France (just look on the booklet of yours ANGRA's CD !!!) so we get the opportunity to listen to new albums such as One Second of Paradise Lost (It's change a lot of Draconian Time but it's really interesting, I like very much this album even if some songs looks like Depeche Mode tune (I'm sure some of you will think about it !!!), I'm PARADISE LOST fan until their beginning with 'Lost Paradise' and my favourite characteristic of this group is their capacity to evolve from an album to another , such as Queensryche in an another style....) and the God Thing which is the title of the new album of VANDEN PLAS. This album will be released in september (the 5th). The only word, I can say is WOOOOUUUUAAAAOOOUUUUHHHH. Vanden Plas music is really more thinking and mature, this album is really amazing. This year , it's the 3rd metal bomb I've heard (the 1st one was the divine wings of tragedy of SYMPHONY X and the 2nd one was Night-time Birds of THE GATHERING). So, after a long trip listen music and watching videos (and 2 hours of sleep !!!) we arrived in Milano just before the beginning of the show.... The first band playing was ELDRITCH which is another band from LMP label. I already saw ELDRITCH a week before as support of ANGRA in Paris, their performance in Paris was really disappointing, and at this time I was thinking that ELDRICTH wasn't a "live" band. I've totally change my mind after their show in Italy, their sound was good. They seem to be quite famous in Italy. I'm really waiting for their 3rd LP !!!. As usual, ELDRICTH has played No More Tears (Ozzy) as last song of their show, but with a little surprise Rafael Bittencourt from ANGRA has played with them =2E.. great moment. The 2nd band playing was TIME MACHINE. I was really expecting for TIME MACHINE (I'm close to say that I went to Milano to see them !!!) 'cause I think their album "Act II: Galileo" is the best (or one of ) LP of 1995. Surprise is the only word, I can say. It was the 1st time I saw them (They've never play in France... come on guys !!!) and I'm sorry to say this but I was disappointing about nearly everything: they've only played 20 minutes instead 40 for ELDRICTH, their sound was "small" and all the magic and mystic spirit of the album completely disappear on live. Maybe I was expecting too much but I can't believe the show I saw, was the same band playing on the album. I'm sure they've got problems or such other things I don't know ... My wish is to see them in concert very soon to change my mind 'cause "Act II: Galileo" is really a great album !!! After this disappointment, I was expecting nothing about nobody (terrible !) but Miracles exist I'm sure! 'cause what happened on stage at this time was certainly one !: They've played 40 minutes without any stop, the audience was crazy from the beginning till the end. They are powerful, they have a good contact with the public, the sound was so incredible, everybody was singing with them. It was such as a big "communion". The name of the band: GRAVE DIGGER. They've played a lot of "tunes of war" (their last album) but also old songs such as Heavy Metal Breakdown. My Favourite moment: REBELLION where GRAVE DIGGER was in total osmose with the audience. Great show, great songs, great band, great audience !!!! The 4th band was RAGE. I saw them in Paris last winter so I knew that they're really impressive on stage. They've played only 45 minutes but it was intensive, Firestorm, Don't fear the winter, Sent by the devil, Shadows out of time, Deep in the blackest hole, End of all days, Higher than the sky and so on. The show was perfect. Even if they've played much longer in Paris I've preferred the Italian show 'cause of the public singing every song. The 5th band was MOONSPELL and it was strange to have a such band in this festival (Personally, Stratovarius or Conception would have be more judicious but...). Their show was really good, their sound perfect, so really interesting (I'll get the album ...) AH! The next band is one of my favourite. I already saw them 3 times before Milano. Their name: ANGRA of course. I saw them the week before in Paris, at The Bataclan. In Paris the show was perfect, the sound and everything. For ANGRA's french fans, this was a great "rendezvous" 'cause the show of Paris in November (where Holy Live has been recorded) was a little disappointing (the sound wasn't really good !!!). So, ANGRA in Paris have played more than 2H30 with some surprise (ricardo singing and andre on drums! The guys of Eldritch and Vanden Plas on stage...). For me this show was perfect powerful and so on, but what a fucking surprise the ANGRA's sound in Milano was amazing as never before and even if they've only played 1H30 this was the best ANGRA's show I've never saw. What about the audience! Completely crazy is the word but in a different way of the french one. The french people are specialist of stage diving during ANGRA's show, but the Italian audience sing more than the french one. ANGRA've played all their fast songs and it was so good...Oh God Everybody was here for them, and I'm sorry to say this but even ANGRA was squashed in front of this twister. MANOWAR on stage is killing everything specially your ears (Next time I'll not forget my Earplug, you can be sure about this !!!). If you've never see MANOWAR on live, you'd to see them 'cause it's incredible. I like MANOWAR's music but everything in this band is old-fashioned, the name, the music, the show, the light of the show, the clothes, the way of talking (death to false metal and so on), the image, the sound, everything but It works, you scream like anyone in the audience singing "if the gods made heavy metal...", you feel good during their show 'cause you can touch their faith in metal and their music, their show is pure energy. I've never saw an audience so crazy and completely devoted to a band. It really fabulous. It's really hard to describe all the sensations and sentiments you can feel during a such good performance. To conclude, the really good surprise except MANOWAR of course was GRAVE DIGGER and I hope that the guys will be on tour in France very soon. Congratulations to the readers, 'cause you've needed a lot of courage to read till the end of this review (sorry about my poor english expression!!!)

    See you
