Well, while Portuguese is my first language, I'm very honest to
say that I could only understand some of the words at the beginning of
    Carolina IV.

And thank you Dan, but I think that it will be pretty easy to
translate into English, but I fear that it won't have much sense for
those not used to the culture from Bahia and its mystic traditions.

But now I'm so happy that I know what is said... :-)

            []s thanking you again, Roger...

I just got Altura's "Mercy" (thanks to Carlos Alfaro) and must say that it fits right in with the Magna Carta catalog of artists. Lots of busy and intricate arrangements, vocal gymnastics, cool ballads, good production... Does anyone have any opinions on their other release(s)?

Another note concerning Superior - I wasn't aware that Bernd and Michael Mueller split up the guitar duties on the album (except Bernd plays the solos), but apparently that is the case. See the second Superior newsletter on the web page for the specifics of who plays on which tune. later, -Neil.

    Hey Ytsejam!

First, sorry about the 'unsubscribe me' post from a month or so ago; with Grand Forks and UND being under the Red River, it was hard to send a proper unsub message. Two years reading the 'jam from UND, cursing out all the "take me off this list!!" posts, and I hav'ta do it myself. What a hypocite, eh?

Second, I've got a telnettable account here, so I went back to UND, deleted a couple hundred 'jams, and sent a real unsub. However, I got mail back saying "You are not subscribed to YSTEJAM" or some such message, followed by another 10 jams :) So take Mike Pelarski (pelarski@aero.und.edu or some such mail alias) off the list, please. (Ack! I did it again!)

Anyway, I graduated by default when UND went under, so I'm now in the Minneapolis area, doing computer design work for Unisys. Anyone know any good prog stores in the area? I've tried various Best Buys & Circuit Cities around the NE metro, as well as Roadrunner records (mentioned in the r.m.progressive FAQ) but nobody seems to have anything good (Roadrunner does, but it's all _really_ prog; Miriodor, Magma, etc., and no Marillion, DT, magna-carta bands, etc.

Does anyone live in a place that has no weather at all? I get literally flooded out of house and home (and car, for that matter) in East Grand Forks, move down here for under three months, and already there's been like 5 storms, two of which cut the power to my apartment (I was un-powered for 20 hours two weekends ago; had to go the store and buy ice to keep my fridge cold), and one of which (last weekend) flash-flooded several homes, highways, and vehicles, as well as flattening trees and homes with high winds... so I'd like to move somewhere with absolutely no weather at all. :)

(Was that all one sentence? I should be flailed with a grammar book...)

On Marillion (easily one of my top-five bands), whoever said something along the lines of "Brave won't get anyone's feet tapping" and "it should be used as elevator music," allow me to offer the dissenting opinion. (I won't say who, since it may have been that moronic forger.) Brave is the only album I own (out of about 300) that can literally bring me to tears. It is dark, moody, and powerful--a concept album about a suicidal girl, abused by her father, who is found on a highway bridge, and refuses to speak to anyone about why she's there. (Any more might spoil the story. Incidentally, if you get the vinyl version of the album, it's double- tracked at the end, giving two possible endings to the story. I wish there was a CD version of the other ending, as well.)

Other Marillion albums are generally divided by singer; Fish on the first albums (Script for a Jester's Tear, Fugazi, Clutching at Straws, Misplaced Childhood) and Steve Hogarth on the recent ones (Brave, Holidays in Eden, Season's End, Afraid of Sunlight, This Strange Engine), though the last one hasn't been released on this side of the pond yet, and I haven't found an import version. I do own all the others, as well as "Made Again" which is a 2-disc concert set (the second disc is the entire "Brave" album played live.) All of them are good, most are progressive (all but HiE, which is half-progressive, half U2-ish pop music), none are metal. Start with Clutching or Misplaced for Fish's work, AoS or SE for Hogarth's. There's a 2-disc "Best of Both Worlds" greatest-hits thing out there, too.

As for the difference in singers, I've heard it said that when Fish left, Marillion gained a singer and lost a poet. That's about as succinctly at it can be put.

And, to close, some DT content. I got my copy of PT last weekend (Thanks Mike!); my first one was evidently lost in shipping due to the flood (despite what the U.S. post orifice might say about the situation.) It's my fourth Prism Records CD, with WDATU, ITS, and CM. It is, of course, awesome beyond belief. Those that haven't ordered it yet, get on the ball!

I have noticed some slams on Berklee recently and just wanted to put in my two cents. Berklee is not only a jazz school, although jazz is very prevailant there. I will be attending Berklee this fall and am really looking forward to it. It is a great place to learn about ALL kinds of music. I think anyone who has a musical talent and a love of music would appreciate the things Berklee teaches. I am in no way a big jazz fan but in my quest for becoming a better musician and a more well rounded listener, I plan on trying to learn what they have to teach and then putting it into my own music. This is what Vai has done as well as John Petrucci. They are both awesome rock players but they also have a great understanding of music in its many different forms and I fail to see how this is a bad thing. Well, that is my two cents. Feel free to slam away.

    See ya, Corey

As much as I'm on the side of Richie concerning most of his 80's views, I have to point out that "10 seconds to love" from the Shout at the Devil album, is indeed about 'elevator sex'. I also have to state that after a week of listening, Generation Swine is my least favorite album of theirs.

Dickinson's Accident of Birth is the best album I have heard in probably 5 years.

    KAI

Hey, sorry for the confusion. I knew about “Ten Seconds To Love,” but I assumed (perhaps falsely) that the author didn’t and he therefore accidently attributed “Love In An Elevator” to Motley. Sorry for the confusion. But the original point of the post stands, which is that Motley doesn’t ONLY write about getting laid and stuff but also has deeper lyrics, like the title track to that album demonstrate.

    Richie

P.S. I haven’t heard the new Bruce album but I’ve heard really good things about it.

It isn't THAT it's contrapuntal, but the complexity of its contrapuntal nature that makes it difficult to play. I was, at one point in time, a reasonable pianist, albeit with terrible technique (too much self-instruction). Essentially, though, I've found that splitting one's brain is different on piano, drums, and bass/guitar (the stringest instruments are actually similar in this respect). Stu DID play piano, though, which has made a difference in his independent. I suppose Ashkenazy and Horowitz would find it a relative non-issue, as well, given some amount of training on bass. For the rest of us, though, it's not so easy -- no matter how hard you work on independence, it's really a difficult thing to get around. I've a hell of a lot of respect for good drummers, who have that independence in all four limbs.

Hi all, time for me to speak. (Parental advisory requested - rude language)

I don't really pay much attention to jams lately since they have turned into a pile of crap. But some things are totally pissing me off, so I can't shut up any longer.

Sorry if I bring up the D-Man subject again. It's out of question that the guy who did this to Chris is a complete jerk. However, I'm tired of seeing the jam go to hell. 80% of it consist of flames, lies, insults, people fighting each other (on a list that is supposed to bring music lovers together !), and so on.

But what really annoys me is how people forget about what they actually do to gay people by saying things like "That dude gave D-Man a bad image." That phrase by itself shows how things haven't changed at all. People (even YtseJammers, who are supposed to be open-minded) are still ignorant, arrogant, and too sure about themselves. That jerk just lied. He didn't tell the truth, but why the fuck does anyone have a bad image if he/she is gay ? I am not gay btw, but I just need to speak up for those who don't dare to "come out". After all that shit on this list noone would even try to. I don't see how anyone could be amused by making fun of other people. If some fucknuts can't accept diversity, then "they are being a dick" (thanks for the quote Itchy) :-)

To all the assholes who are using/abusing other people's e-mail addresses: Aren't you fuckin sick of it ?

And btw, if you have any comments on my opinion, feel free to email me and stand your ground, I am not going to participate in a public flame war.

<< I'm glad you posted. I wrote that because I was making my list of people who can't take a joke and congrats! You made #1 on the list.

I'd like to thank my agent, members of the academy....Okay, so I went a little off the deep end. But when someone starts talking shit about the Crue....

Ok, DoD was pretty much put out so the Crue could get rid of Vince. Dr. Feelgood was a good record, but what's "She Goes Down" about? Really? I'd love to see your source for that. I thought DoD was put out to celebrate a band that stuck together for ten years when they should have been dead in two.

I saw an interview with Nikki after they fired Vince Neil Wharton and he said they fired him because Vince wanted to go in the direction of bands like Poison, and they wanted to get heavier.

I'd believe that. Look at the next Motley album with John and look where Vince went with "Exposed." But I like the Vince's album better (and I love Poison). The Crue changed their look with every album, but the music pretty much stayed the same. TFFL (Leathur) and SATD are great, after that they should've just quit.

Up to the point that Vince got fired, the music stayed around the same while going through the natural evolution that a band goes through with each album. But the self-titled album and the new "Generation Swine" are totally different than previous Motley albums.

I was referring to "Ten Seconds To Love." Just in case you're not sure, it's on the Shout At The Devil album released in 1983. And of course there's nothing wrong with songs about sex, but the songwriting changed dramatically when Corabi joined the band. Why that is I don't know, but that's how I see it. >>

See an earlier post of mine that apologizes for the confusion.
