    >let me know if his other album(s) are similar? Or does he tread the more
    >familiar territory of instrumental fusion (a la Greg Howe, Tony MacAlpine,
    >etc)?

Starting with Hermit is kind of the wrong way round! Ron has one other
album, "The Adventures of Bumblefoot", and an eight track demo. Bumblefoot
was before Hermit, and it's entirely instrumental besides a secret comedy
track on the end. There is NOTHING familiar about his style on Bumblefoot
to those other guitarists - that's why he stood out to me.

There's a lot of phenomenal playing on there, and his tracks are wildly
inventive. Hermit caught me quite off guard with its sound after this, but
I still think it's a brilliant album. The whole of Bumblefoot has a kind
of weird humour about it, and there are things he does on there that you
honestly won't even be able to contemplate what he's doing to the guitar.

Beware though: as it was earlier in his career, and cheaper, Bumblefoot has
a very raw sound. The guitars often have little or no reverb, and Ron has
intentionally used a really obvious drum machine sound, but this is also a
quirky thing that I like about the album.

Also, Ron's a very nice guy with plenty of time for his praising fans like
me, he used to write to me a lot.

No I do not think AIDS is the gay disease and you are obviously finding

    Hi everyone,
Here it is! I've been promising this for quite some time and I just
wanted to email it to the list. I'm going to add all the URL for all the
places without one. That's it for now.

    Good places:

    >everyone else seems to have moved on to other avenues (Kotzen w/Poison,
    >Friedman w/Megadeth, Gilbert w/Mr Big, etc...)

I actually think I was making a separate point, which is that Shrapnel
really cut all of those guys off at the knees by using a half dozen guys
(Castronovo, Hamm, Sheehan, Anur, Smith) to play on the albums while
producing all of them in approximately the same way. Greg Howe was such a
breath of fresh air on Shrapnel specifically because he was doing something
that sounded a little differently. And it wasn't until the second record,
where they used his band, that his personality was really allowed to shine
through. Part of the reason everyone sounded so similar is because they
really were pushed through a sonic cookie cutter. If you listen to Kotzen,
Friedman, MacAlpine, and Vinnie Moore, they're all miles from each other.
And Racer X doesn't write music much like any of THOSE folks. But you'd get
the same damn sounds and say "Okay, let's hear your fastest harmonic minor"
and some of the listening pleasure gets cut out. One of the reasons I LIKE
listening to Gilbert with Mr. Big is that he gets to play more sides of his
character. Especially on the debut album and "Hey Man," both of which are
    really cool.

    >I agree - he should lay off the Jimi Hendrix tunes. I think he gets pressured
    >into playing "bluesy" when his critics say he plays with no emotion. This
    >point annoys me to no end. I don't think you have to play slow bends to show
    >emotion. When I hear Yngwie play one of his patented scalar runs, my knees
    >buckle...thats EMOTION!!! He should just stick with what comes naturally to
    >him.

Well, he's ALWAYS given Hendrix credit. I remember that interview in Guitar
with him and Sheehan....which musta been at least ten years ago...where be
basically said his two big influences were Bach and Hendrix. He may have
been blowing smoke up our colective asses, but he was talking about Hendrix
    with great regard even then.

No, this isn't a Pure Moods ad...

I'm wonderin' what songs are out there that ppl listen to when they feel
they're in the shitter, tha dumps, really low 'n shit. Something to
bring you up or just keep your mind preoccupied to prevent the really bad
    thoughts to start churning.

I had Space Dye Vest playin' in continuous repeat last night...pure
poetry, but I still don't get half of the voice overs in that songs. The
last two songs off of Eric Johnson's Ah Via Musicom are really soothing
at times too. Pantera's version of Planet Caravan is so ethereal, I'll
keep that rotating...it's a damn fine tune. Fade to Black always seems
to pick me up and get me moshin' back to life as well. Are there any
other songs out there that have this sorta effect on you? I'm interested
in this much more than your opinions on the "oppressive" Christian entity
    and homophobia.

Seems like everyone's got a different opinion on this one. :) Good luck to you (whoever you were) that bought AFTK trying to figure out where to go from here. I will say this: If you own AFTK, you *must* own Hemispheres, to see how "Cygnus X-1" ends. Other than that, just remember that there are three distinct periods of Rush music, and they're rather different from each other.

The first, from 1974 to 1978 (Rush to Hemispheres) is considered the "Science Fiction" era, also the most progressive. You'll find most of Rush's epic songs here, including "2112," "Fountain of Lamneth," and "Cygnus X-1."

The second era, from 1980 to 1989 (Permanent Waves to Presto, give or take) is their Pop/Electronic era, where you're going to find the radio singles, tunza keyboards, and the album that Alex almost quit because of (Power Windows). There are, however, those killer prog tunes that snuck through ("Natural Science," "The Camera Eye," etc.)

The third era, from 1991 to present (Roll The Bones-ish to Test For Echo) is Rush as a Rock Band. Guitar, bass, drums, and only a hint of keys make these the heaviest, most guitar-oriented albums they've done since Hemispheres. Must-owns if you like rock and roll.

I posted this to help you out in choosing albums, but also because I'm interested to see if other jammers agree or disagree with this. Oh, well, gotta go watch the day-before-the-all-star-game stuff. :)

no way be construed as butt-kissing. Also, none of the awards are given sarcastically, as would be an award for "Best Ass" going to D-Man.

YTSEJAM'S FIRST TOP YTSEJAMMER LIST ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Best entertainment------------------------------------------------- - Bafu Vai - This guy needs to write for Conan O'Brien or something. I can't get over how well he translates every issue on the Jam into something humorous.

Most intelligent poster-------------------------------------------- - Michael Coghlan - Like it or not, you supposed "99% of the Jam" who are against him, he's a smart guy. He's posted TWICE. He knows how to sit back and think things through. And yes, age does have a lot to do with it. All of you come back in 10-20 years, marry and have kids, and tell me you haven't learned something about yourselves. I'm talking to you, too, D-Man.

Least class--------------------------------------------------------- - Scott Cook - As one Jammer put it, he writes "childish swearing and death threats." Makes me ashamed to be a Jammer sometime.

Most class---------------------------------------------------------- - Mike Bahr - This guy would be a great Christian. Persecution slides off his back like water off Bafu.

Best French Horn Player-------------------------------------------- - Ben Laussade - Not only is he a great french horn player, but he's also not an actor.

Doesn't Realize a Good Thing When It Hits Him----------------------- - Chris Merlo - Tell me this whole hootananny hasn't helped you. You should be a happy gay man now, not the sad one you were before. :)

Best Brady Bunch to DT theme song tranlation------------------------ - Eckie - That's the way, we became, the homo list.

This next award is prefaced by a post by .profile, if that's his name.

    > From: gra@provida.no > Subject: Imposter vs. Ytsejammers: 1 - 0 > > Hi jammers, have you noticed the fact that the fucknut of an imposter got > what he came for ?

Thank you, somebody finally noticed. :) That leads me to:

Dumbest bunch of cattle--------------------------------------------- - Most of the Ytsejam - It's too easy sometimes. I even surpassed my own expectations. I'd say, 50% of the last 37 Jams have been about me or homosexuality. I have to admit, D-Man, you're not one of cows. The prophet Chris Merlo said it best here:

    > Thanks again, those of you that mailed me. You know what pisses me > off most? This is going to be a thread. -d

And what a huge, spawning thread it was.

Thank you for your time. I wish I could think of more awards to give. Those of you who didn't make the list this time, there's hope for next time. :)

    OK ....

This is where things stand right now. I have decided to keep the list up, but only because I know all too many people would hate me if I took it down. I considered taking it down until a new album, but it would just be too much of a pain in the ass right now. So, instead the rules are gonna change. This change is being brought on by all the bullshit which has been on this list lately. So here is the new rule:

If you start/particpiate in/continue/think about a post about any of the following topics (which will be updated from time to time) you will be automatically kicked off the list and banned permanently. A warning system is just stupid and takes too much of my time:

    1) Sexual Orientation 2) Religion 3) Blind Melon 4) NIN 5) Metallica selling out 6) Top 10 Lists 7) Jokes 8) Any other long completely off-topic discussion

No, I will not take requests. I spent my WHOLE day yesterday going though 14,000 emails of bounces and various other shit and had a whole bunch of emails from people today complaining about the useless shit on the jam. I don't have the time to deal with idiots on this mailing list and either do many other people on this list. People want to hear about Dream Theater and other _RELATED_ topics. Related topics are things like other prog bands, upcoming shows, discussions about music in general, etc. That is why I joined this list many moons ago and that is why I run it today, so that YOU people can have information, not so people can be assholes and talking about stupid shit. I am definately NOT putting down the people who emailed me today, I'm glad you did because it shows the state of this list, so don't fret :)

So, that is how things are going to be now. If you don't like it:

And now, the thing i've been waiting for:

ANGRA!!!! woohoo!!! that's right Richard James, I did receive it finally, and it roks my gonadz (stopnadz?) all over the place. I already had the tape dub, but it sounds so much clearer now. The vox dude does have a really cool voice, especially considering he doesn't speak english all that well. remember high school german class trying to sing the beer drinking songs on key when you couldn't pronounce the words? that sucks! anyway, let's all just put this little incident behind us as we have numerous other times. I've never seen DMan's ass butt I think the award would irrovocably go to KJ Labrie and no one on this jam can deny it! *peering provocatively at D-Man* <j/k>

Too bad i never got a chance to read any of the stuff sent by that imposter previously. In all actuality, he seems like the kind of guy that would be great to have in an active debate on the jam over something most people wouldn't find as offensive. Kinduv

Enough of this hootenanny! Lets start up some top ten lists to get this through our systems! KorgX3 KorgX3@cyberhighway.net
