Whoa!!
I just got back from one of the greatest concert experiences ever!!! I'm
sure Dale Newberry will post something shortly concerning Cornerstone '97.
Some great bands there: Atomic Opera (with Galactic Cowboys' Alan Doss on
drums), Living Sacrifice, Klank, Caedmon's Call, Stavesacre, and Saviour
Machine...plus.
The main act was indeed SM. It was their first performance on American
soil since their 1993 tour which they pretty much got the plug pulled on
them due to being "too weird." Just let me say this, the two (yes,
TWO...2...) performances were excellent. Very gothic, very moody, very
elegant, and very intense...all in one.
The first performance (4pm on Saturday) was material from Saviour Machine I
and Saviour Machine II. They had some technical difficulties...a couple
power surges. But all in all a very intense set. I can't remember fully,
but here's what I'm pretty sure they played:
The Stand
Enter the Idol
Legion
Carnival of Souls (Dale? I'm not sure on that one.)
Jesus Christ
American Babylon
Saviour Machine II
Their second performance was that same night at 10pm. This performance was
all of the material from "Legend Part I." They wanted to separate it from
the other material due to it's concept and story-telling that did not
relate to their earlier stuff at all. This performance had the band in
full makeup (yes, Eric wore "the" broach on his forehead), and it was
spectacularly lit by hundreds of candles. The setlist was not quite the
same as the CD: they started with a keyboard intro and then into "Birth
Pangs." After the last track on the CD- "Antichrist"- they went back and
did the first part of the CD to end on a positive note. I think the only
track on the CD not played was "Legend I:II," but don't quote me on that.
They hope to release their CD-ROM in December 1997, their Legend Part II in
March 1998, and Legend Part III in 1999. Full (2 month) U.S. gothic tour
with Spy Glass Blue, Eva O, and Wedding Party in June/July 1998. Right now
they are finishing up Legend II and heading over to Germany for a tour.
I took 3 rolls of pictures at the SM shows. I should have them developed
by Friday... :)

I listen to a variety of stuff, depending on how bad my day has been. But there are two songs that are guaranteed to pick me up and put me in a better mood, no matter how bad a day I've had. They are "Battery" and "Master of Puppets" from Master of Puppets. I don't know why these songs get me back into a mood where I can deal with life again. I guess because it's one of the great speed/thrash/whatever metal albums of all time. But they never, ever fail.

I normally understand there to be the four periods of the band, delimited by the live albums. You certainly can make the argument that "Fly By Night" essentially carries out a flow of albums that carries to "Hemispheres," but you've gotta treat the first album as a special case. It's blues-rock, basically, without the sci-fi, albeit with some awfully good playing. Alex really shines on that first record. I think your system is tenable, but I'll go for the period you talk about being, in essence, half of one and all of another.

"Permanent Waves" to "PRESTO?" No way...."Signals" was a pretty radical break for the band, and, by the time you get to "Presto," you're talking about a radically different sound. You've gotta break it up somewhere in there. The two songs you mention are the ONLY songs from that whole period that clock in more than a couple of ticks over six minutes. They certainly paired down for "Permanent Waves," which is why I'm okay with your first period. There IS a difference between "Hemispheres" and "Permanent Waves." There's a bigger one between "Moving Pictures" and "Signals."

Yeah. I'll go for that. They've stripped down the sound a lot over the last three records. Am I the only one, though, who thinks that "Test For Echo" is a little LESS guitar-oriented than "Counterparts." The last album has a noisier mix, but a little less in the guitar department, I'd say.

Apologies for calling you a hypocrite like that, Itchy. (A public apology on the jam? What the hell am I thinking? I must be a wuss!)
I attempted to draw up a novel of information to provide to you all about my opinions on the subject and how people are subject to homosexuality through their own choice, but it doesn't make any difference and no one here is going to see it.
Anyone who has posted info about the subject as I have seen it have been partially correct at least to some extent. Who knows? There really are no facts to support either side of the subject so people might as well quit asking for them. Everyone is biologically different. We all have different reasons for doing the things we do and feeling the way we feel. We are all composed of the same matter externally but internally we are all a conglomeration of our upbringing and our surroundings. Everything we know and feel that was once commonplace and absolute in our lives was breached the moment we stepped in here. It doesn't matter if you are black or white, homosexual or heterosexual. It doesn't matter what God you worship or which flag you salute. We're a calamity of opinions as people from different lands in different parts of the world vie to uphold their beliefs and state their opinions in a world where feelings and ideas change at a moments whim.
Dammit, that's why I love this place. We are all so different, but we all have a common bond. Where it is enjoyable to argue the merits of talented performers (and those not-so-talented), it is completely unwarranted and rather shameful to discuss a group of people who are no different inside than the rest of us. Nothing good is going to come out of it. Nobody is going to ever have the "right" answer. I say we stop this arguement now before someone really gets hurt. A public forum like this is most definitely not the appropriate place for discussion of such a personal nature.
