YES!! You're absolutely correct. People refer to Yngwie as "neo-classical"
because of the HUGE grouping of music called "classical music" which
encompasses everything from Gregorian Chant to 20th Century classical
composers like Webern or Copland. The title "Malmsteen, neo-classical
guitarist" has nothing to do with the actual Classical Period.

YES!! He's got Brandenburg written all over him!! :)

Paganini was a Romantic composer, NOT a Baroque composer. Ognuno ha i suoi
    segreti.

To date, I have never heard a tone similar to the one produced by my Crate G80XLS with the Celestion speaker. By this I mean something as searing and aggressive. It's very electronic-sounding, with a lot of gain. A friend once described my tone as "knives sharpening," this being in reference to my Crate running with some sparkling Digitech effects washed in. Personally I think the tone created with this setup is reminiscent of Ty Tabor, Steve Vai, and "No More Tears" era Zakk Wylde.

I guess what I'm saying is I'd rather have a graphic equalizer than a sub-woofer. And as soon as $150 lands in my lap I can actually pick up my amp from Condor Electronics. Do tube amps ever have problems with solderings melting off of the connections?

The harmonies on "To Live Forever" are gayer than a hootananny.

Or my name ain't Chris Ptacek.

Fates Warning comes to Philadelphia and it *had* to be the same day I'm going to see Jethro Tull...

Does anyone in-the-know know (as opposed to anyone in the no-no?) if FW will be adding more dates to their tour schedule? As it stands, it's pretty skimpy. No Northeast at all, aside from that one Troc show. I suppose it serves us right, what, getting all the Fix shows and all...

El Subjecto: Ytse & Jam, Testicles, New Songs, Mood Songs, Sammy's Nap

That subject line hasn't been showing up in the past, so that's why you see the subject again in the body. Yeehaw, baby.

The following post is 75% real DTC and related, the other 25% amazingly isn't designed to destroy the list.

    > From: imposter@wee.wee > Dumbass! I'm not the real imposter! I'm the imposter of the imposter, and > if you don't leave me alone, I'll imposter YOUR ass! And I've been on here > since before The Ytse & The Jam so TAKE THAT, boy! Or maybe I am the real > imposter! We have at least 3 imposters here! Which is the real one? Oh! > I'll take door #1 please!

I think that would be Ytse & Jam, not THE Ytse & THE Jam. I myself have been on the jam since the late 600's. On the Mike Bahr timeline, I got on the list slightly after Subconscious was released (and sold out) and got on a little before Acoustic Dreams was announced.

Bafu wrote: > Kevin Moore used to join in, but Peart was so rough he destroyed one > of Moore's testicles, leaving the poor guy with cancer.

This brings a tear to my eye everytime Kevin's testicles are brought up. My early work. Yes, I wrote the fake story about Kevin Moore getting testicle cancer, and I even was so honored to have Bafu write a snippet about it in one of the Ytse & Jam series.

NEW SONGS.. I just listened to my Fix for '96 tapes again finally. I've had them for awhile, but I only listened to them once before. All the songs are nad-rockin' cool, but theres one thing that just grates at me. Nothing bothers me more than repetitive lyrics in songs (ie. QR's 'Get a Life'). And, I'm sad to say, our beloved Dream Theater has finally cracked and put in an annoying string of repetition in Burning My Soul. "(James and Mike I assume) Burning my soul! (James) Burrrrning myyy soul! (J&M) Burning my soul! (James) Burrrrrning myyy soul! (J&M) Burning my soul! (James) Burrrrning myyy soul!.. " FIRE! FIRE! Yah yah heh heh. You get the point. The rest of the song is awesome and heavy.

    ------

MOOD SONGS.. Wooo I thought I'd add my personal latest favorite for a mood song. This song is great for if you're down in the dumps or you're just in a chillin' kind of mood. What song?

    - CHASING BLUE SKY

Whoa baby, what a song!! What a SONG! I bought Queensryche's 'Sign of the Times' single this past week, and CBS was included (which was the bonus track on the Japanese HITNF) I think this should have been on the main CD, because I think it's easily one of the best songs. Nice, crisp, and Geoff's voice is perfect for it. Not only that, but there's two more tracks on the disc, 'Silent Lucidity' from MTV unplugged (sans cool sampling, but a really cool sounding guitar part to replace that section that's so sample-reliant (where that chick says "help me")), and also 'The Killing Words', also from the Unplugged show. Definitely worth the 10 bucks.

    ------

Kudos to Pat Griffin for the great rundown of the new songs. Personally, I've heard 6 of the new songs. What the krunk is 'Sammy's Nap' though? I've never even heard mention of this song. Instrumental?

    -------

For anybody wondering who I am, LOOK IN THE FAQ. Next time somebody e-mails me wondering who I am, I'm just going to send them 12 copies of the FAQ. I'm in the section about Vindaloo.

    That's right, babee, I'm hot.

Why would anyone who favors Prog Rock/Metal even remotely enjoy or like hearing music by Primus? I mean, it was bad enough RUSH let them play on the Counterparts tour, but I mean, they suck....they really do. Their music is awful, it makes no sense, and is just as much noise as the other alternacrap that is currently the radio norm. To put it bluntly, Primus is a waste of radio play.....why not DT? Is the music industry that afraid of good quality music? Kind of like my friend had put it, "Talent throws people off"

I think he was on to something with this statement.....alternacrap is shit and people like it.....Prog is quality music with thought and creativity yet people seem to dispise it, except for us underground followers......I hope that one day Prog will have its day on the radio...........imagine, everywhere you tune your radio, a DT song is playing....ah, my dream...........

Hey, folks. One of our fellow jammers e-mailed me a couple of days ago, dying to know a few things, and hoping that Mike was available for comment. Mike was able to find a few minutes to answer these questions for us, and, I think, address all the major concerns everyone here has. I'd like to thank our fellow jammer for the insightful questions, and Mike for the speedy and honest replies.

    Here we go:

<< 1) Are they letting that new dude water down the content/length of songs like Lines in the Sand ?? If they go chop-chop on songs like that down to 5-6 minutes, keep me away from high places .... >>

    1) Yes, Kevin Shirley has made suggestions and changes here and there. That is one of the roles of a Producer. And yes, there were even minor changes on "Lines in the Sand". However, they were suggestions made to help strengthen the song's arrangement..not "water down" the content or length. In fact, it still clocks in at around 12 minutes or so.........So, It's safe to go have a party on your roof!

<< 2) Have they made any headway about the total length of the CD ?? There were strong indications over in NL that this producer insisted on nothing longer than 60 minutes total. Of course this is insanity when they have 2+ hours of great stuff !! Tell MP that we are PLEADING for 79.999999 minutes !! >>

    2) It's not 100% for sure, but it looks pretty probably that the CD will be packed to the max. (75 or so minutes) Kevin, and even a few of the other band members, prefer shorter albums...but we had sooo much material, it was hard enough to narrow down the songs to record. Now, we are pumped on all of the ones recorded and can't seem to imagine not including any one of them. So it's looking good......I'm still looking out for you guys!!!!

<< 3) Are they going to tackle Metropolis II during this recording session (even if it wont be on the CD) ?? We know that if they do then there is a chance that the Gods may bless us at Christmas time or that there may even be a CD single. >>

    3) Because of the extreme length of the song (we got carried away...), there was no way to include it on the album while still getting all of the others included...... Because of the time available to us to get the album done, I doubt there will be an over-abundance of time leftover for a track of this magnitude..... We really do want M2 eventually released because it is so over the top, but I honestly can't picture it happening until at least next year. (Maybe an EP, or imported CD single..) This is a similar dilemma to what we had with ACOS...

If you're in the fan club, the Gods will probably bless you around Christmas time anyway....It just won't be this just yet..... Believe me, We're about to provide you guys with PLENTY of music!!!

Thanks for the comments..... If these responses are posted to the jam, thanks for the patience and support. But don't start bombing Chris with questions for me!!! I have an album to finish and a newborn baby to raise!! : ) C-ya very soon, Mike

    Hi all

to put it simply, I don't like it. With a title like that I expect to see hobbits and dwarfs and things standing on mist-covered mountains looking expectantly to some wrinkled old man wearing a travel-worn cape etc. etc.

Led Zeppelin did it right when they just numbered their albums, just like BMW, Mercedes and Porsche give their cars numbers.

I'm surprised that nobody has gone searching through the great works of literature and philosophy to see if they can find the three words that constitute the name of the forthcoming album in an attempt to interpret them.

Perhaps I'm just pissed off because they guys didn't call the new album Godot.

Could it be that the mysterious imposter comes from France? wee.wee = oui.oui

I totally agree, I was goin to post this, but I didn't know the name of the song. I am definitely NOT a Radiohead fan, but this song is damn good (one of my faves) -- the only problem with the song (and it's not bad) is that it always seems, when I listen to it, that the song is building to this big climax with guitars and drums and everything, but it never happens.....gives me a case of musical blue balls.....

    /me morphs into rod serling...

imagine if you will... an opening act for one of your favorite band. only, these guys are awful. simply horrible. the music reminds you of a bad imitation of Motley Crue, and the front man sounds more like an anouncer for a monster truck rally than someone who's ever actually sang anything in his life. ("sunday, SUNDAY, sunday!") actually, he sounded a lot like James does when he's screaming "let's make some more noise!", only he sounded that way all the time, and he really didn't sound even *that* good... but i digress. anyway, this horrible band introduces themselves as "malicious", which turns out to be an apt name, considering the amount of pain inflicted on your ears as the "music", as it were, is at least twice as loud as it needs to be to prove the lack of worth of the "musicians" playing it. half of the sparse crowd in the arena decides that perhaps acoustically, the sound would be better from the concourse. they are wrong. the band sounds a hell of a lot better from the bathroom, because the reverb off of those metal urinal troughs is a key factor in any band's sound, especially one who should be limited to playing in bathrooms only. so, after roughly a half an hour more of standing in the concourse, where the music is still too loud, the following dialogue occurs...

Frontman: "hey, that was our last song. thanks for coming out." *The Concourse erupts in cheers and whistles.* <pause> Frontman: "hey, uh, i wanna play one more." Concourse: "NO!!!" Frontman: "is it ok if we play one more?" Man next to me: "is there any way we can stop him?"

did i mention that i didn't like the band that opened for QR last night? hehehe...

    /rant mode off

well, other than the 45 minutes of agony in the very beginning, the concert was, as expected, fabulous. they played a good mix of old and new songs, and in fact they played a lot more from O:MC than i had even hoped for, although i do have to complain that if they're going to play "Breaking the silence", "i don't believe in love", and "Eyes of a stranger", what the hell is the point of leaving out the two shorter songs in between? so the set's 4 minutes longer... some of us happen to like those songs.

my apologies to the kind jammer directly in front of me (who's name i forget, but it started with a J... so post just to make me look dumb, or something...) for any of my singing. i was just trying to avoid having to hear the guy behind me who kept yelling "queensryche! this is classic queensryche!" yeah, no shit, who did you expect? incidentally, if any of you meet this jammer who's name i forget, don't mess with him. the dude's a fuckin' stone wall. i don't think he even flinched the whole concert...

okey, so overall, go see queensryche when they come near you. (yes mosh, you too.)

oh yeah, one last point, directed at every band i've seen recently.

TURN THE FUCKIN' VOLUME DOWN! trust me, we'll let you know when we can't hear you...

laters, alex (twistroad on irc. it's twistroad, ok.)
