    Yo guys,

Woah, DTC???? Here's my take on the new tunes..

    > - Burning My Soul -
    >
    > This song is my favorite of the new ones I have heard. It's an Awake
    type
    > heavy song.

I agree. However, you should also mention that the middle part has an
incredibly moving slow guitar melody. This is a GREAT melody and will shut
up anybody who says JP can only play fast. There are also great guitar
melody's in the instrumental sections of Peruvian Skies and Lines in the
Sand. This is an area of JP's playing where I've seen him grow leaps and
bounds from his solos in WDADU which were basically a bag of shredder's
tricks. Don't worry though, most of the new stuff still has lots of fast JP
    style shredding.

    > - Peruvian Skies -

I'm surprised no one has mentioned how incredibly similar this tune's intro
is to Metallica's Bleeding Me. It's hard to explain, you just have to hear
it yourself. Don't worry all you anti-Load people, the rest of the song is
nothing like Bleeding Me. The chorus sounds very Floydian to me, and after
the second chorus comes another great Petrucci melody. The only thing I
don't like is how when the song gets heavier they copy the clean intro with
the same thing just palm muted with lots of distortion. It just doesn't
sound very imaginative and it's as if the band just said, "Hey, let's make
it heavy now." If none of this makes sense maybe it will when you hear the
    tunes. :)

    >
    > - Lines in the Sand -
    >
    > This one is long and complex, and varies a lot. It starts off with a
    cool
    > piano peice from Derek, followed by a reverb key patch that he solos
    over.

This is my favorite new song by far. The intro is Derek playing with a new
patch on his Korg Trinity. I noticed at Guitar Center the other day that
the trinity has a knob thing that varies the harmonics of the sound or
something like that, and Derek uses that a lot here to get some cool
    sounds.

This song isn't as crazily progressive as say, Metropolis, but there are
lots of kick-ass type grooves and lots of variations on the groove. It has
a great feel and keeps it the entire song with lots of subtle-proggyness
    (ya'll got that?).

    >erek wrote a lot of
    > this song, and it shows. James comes back in again for a short bridge,
    > then it's out to another instrumental section, where Derek takes the lead
    > with a jazzy key solo.

This is my favorite part of all the new stuff. The band breaks down and
Derek does some classy jazz style fills based on the main riffs. Myung
plays around with some fills while MP grooves away. The feel is great here.

    >
    > - Take Away My Pain -

I can't really hear this tune very well on my tape of the Fix show, it's
quite distorted. But what I do remember from the concert is JP playing a
    double-neck Ibanez with a 12-string and a 6-string, so it's got some
12-string stuff on it. The chorus is very powerful and moving as everybody
else has said. I don't have much else to offer on this one...

    > - Just Let Me Breathe -
    >

This is a fast, upbeat tune. The main riff reminds me of something Steve
Miller band had done, I forget the name of the Miller band song though.
Anyway, the songs kicks all ass in the middle. There's a dual
guitar/keyboard lead a la Metropolis and TTT except this one tops even
    those I think. It's like a roller-coaster. Besides that there's some parts
I don't really like. James just doesn't sound real great during the bridge
cause he sings staccato (or however you spell it) and I don't think that's
really his style. Also some organ things that Derek does come off more
cheesy and 70's than really effective.

I don't want to review RtK yet since it doesn't have vocals, so...

    > - Where Are You Now -

This song sounds extremely like King's X to me, especially the beginning.
Somebody who hasn't heard King's X might think it sounds more grungey and
an attempt to be more commercial. I don't really care though, cause the
tune kicks all ass. Great feel and groove yet again, and lots of powerful
and soaring vocals from James which I think are his forte (pretend there's
an accent on that e). Plus we get keyboard and guitar solos and it's 7
minutes long. This is supposed to be a commercial type song?

Well those are all the songs I've heard so far. I hope you've enjoyed DTC,
I know it'll be a rough transition to go from this to the regular flow of
    the jam...

    Hey all,

Just wondering if a kind jammer would help me complete a personal quest of mine. I want to get all the different recordings of ACOS that I can. I have an old one, a "primitive" studio recording with "Please Don't Go", a "Please Don't Go" live version recorded in New Jersey, the released studio version, and a live version of the studio release. I'm particularly looking for the "Mercy Fuck" version, but any others would be appreciated. E-Mail me if you can help.. I don't have too too much in the way of DT boots, or anything, but I have some cool stuff.. thanks in advance..

After having to wait around all day for the air conditioner man to come and only do 30 minutes of work I got to listen to Precious Things a few times. Mike Bahr has put out another great cd. The sound quality on this one is excellent. Great job Mike!

I got an email from a member in Shadow Gallery and he said that the dates for the US tour and the whole tour will come out after the new cd Tyranny is released.

Does anyone know if Nicolo Paganini's 24 Caprices have ever been recorded on guitar? I know bits and pieces have crept into some of the "shredder" pieces (including "Crossroads" - Ralph Macchio vs Steve Vai - CLASSIC!), but I would love to see someone try and play them on the guitar - if it's even possible.

I have 2 copies - one by I. Perman and also one by Midori.

On the live vid I have Gilbert doesn't seem to be putting forth any effort at all while playing blisteringly fast. I can't answer this in the "general" sense, but in the vid Gilbert, Sheehan, and Torpey all have extended spotlight solos. Sheehan's solo has to be seen to be believed. His comes last, which leads me to believe that they consider it even more of a display of technical mastery than Gilbert's. Bassists check this out! The video culminates in a cover of The Who's "Baba O'Reilly" in which Gilbert plays the slow guitar melody in the middle with his teeth. Quite a spectacle. cheers, -Neil.

    Great post.

    > GREG HOWE: Comments, opinions? I fookin' *love* this guy's debut album on > Shrapnel. I haven't heard any of the newer discs - can anyone tell me if he has > returned to the instrumental fusion format?

Yes, and his last several albums have been phenomenal. Different guitar tone... less metal. He's come up with even more awesome techniques. I heard (and later confirmed this by asking him when I met him at the Becker Benefit party) a lot of Brett Garsed influence on his playing (Brett plays on the Centrifugal Funk album you mentioned, on Legato Records). The guy is getting better and better.

    > TONY MACALPINE: This guy is extremely talented, a virtuoso on both guitar and > piano.

    One of the absolute best!

    > Then again, maybe his particular hooks just don't click with my brain.. hmm..

This may actually be the case. If you don't get grabbed by the hooks in Maximum Security (his best) or Guitar Madness (His lamest title) then you probably won't everreally get into his thing. His Keyboard solos are on the level (actually, I think ABOVE the level) of Kevin Moore.

    > JASON BECKER:

I agree with everything you said there.

    > MARTY FRIEDMAN: Becker's partner in crime in Cacophony and current > shredmaster of Megadeth, Friedman is responsible for IMO the greatest metal > album of all time, Megadeth's "Rust In Peace."

Wow... that's a new record. I agree with someone completely, twice in one post!

    > I think his earlier work with Cacophony was superior to his early solo effort, > "Dragon Kiss", possibly due to Becker's influence.

Actually, Friedman was the influence on Becker, according to interviews with the two and all of the stories I've heard. Varney paired the two up because Becker had a lot of fire, but trouble getting his ideas out the way he wanted to. I guess supposedly that's one of the things Friedman taught him. Keep in mind, Becker was only 16 when he started up Cacophony, and the first record was recorded when he was 17 (his next two albums were done when he was 18). Friedman had a few years on him.

    > His penchant for wicked bends and cool-sounding minor scales is what sets him > apart from other metal guitarists, I think. I just wish he'd "go off" a > little more in the more recent Megadeth releases. I'll have to catch them > live and see if I can get a taste of that..

TOTALLY. His first instructional video is him showing you how to do more exotic things with your playing. He has a completely unique voice (blended from the likes of Uli Jon Roth and classic rock heros of his, along with Japanese koto and eastern music influences) and a vibrato/bend that no one can quite emulate. Maybe his best attribute is is Circular Sweep Picking ability. He taught Becker how to do this... if you hear a solo that is just too fast and bizarre, often times this is the technique. I was very disappointed with Youthanasia's solos. Haven't heard the new album yet, because of that.

    > MICHAEL LEE FIRKINS: Anyone remember this guy?

Yeah! His first album KILLED, and then from then on he's sucked a lot of ass, IMO. Saw him live atthe Becker Benefit. Sucked a lot of ass. He has so much talent, but he's playing what sounds like rhythm tracks with no solos or melodies. That first album is a keeper though!

    > JOEY TAFOLLA: What the hell happened to this guy? I got his disc "Infra > Blue" and immediately categorized him in the "pretty decent but just like > everyone else" shrapnel guitarist category. Maybe everyone else did too...

Infra-Blue is stunning for its Bass (John Onder) and Drums (DEEN!!!) mainly. Joey sort of overused his new phrasing tool (The combination of the major and minor blues scales) so the album is not perfect, but I dig it. His first album (They don't get more silly and neoclassical than this title) Out of the Sun is a shredfest. Paul Gilbert makes a shining appearance, as does MacAlpine on keys.

    > RITCHIE KOTZEN: This guy is a very cool guitarist. I've said it before and

He's the reason I learned to play fast, and his instructional video was my legato mentor. Very inspired playing from a former Vai clone. Now he's gona a lil bluesy, and is getting back into the fusion non-shred thing. He was out in a Motown zone for a long time... he took some vocal lessons and suddenly thought he was one of the Isley Brothers. Very good player though.

    > VITO BRATTA: I am a fan of White Lion, mostly because I think Vito was > perhaps the cream of the crop of EVH sound-alikes. He wasn't entirely an EVH > ripoff, but the influence is central to Vito's style. Vito was also an > amazing solo "writer."

Right on the mark. To me and many of my friends, Vito always seems like he's "figuring out" his solos... like "Oh, so THAT'S tapping" an so on. Just a weird quirk about how he sounds and stuff. Pretty good player though.

    > NUNO BETTENCOURT: Great, great guitarist. One of his coolest techniques is his > ability to play very fast picked runs with heavy string muting, adding a very > percussive feel to the solo and a great separation of notes.

TOTALLY. Only a handful of players really do that. Jeff Tyson of T-Ride is excellent at that, and Ron Thal is another master of that (See the song Strawberry Footrot :) but it's a KILLER technique.

    > I haven't heard his latest solo album as of yet.

It's fantastic! Totally not extreme, except for the vocal melodies. Maybe a bit to 90's for some of the people on this list, so listen before you buy. Great moody attitude songs!

    > JAKE E. LEE:

    > MICHAEL FATH: Can anyone else comment further?

Yes. The worst name in the music business (meaning, you can't sound heterosexual when you say it. "Oh, I'm going to the Michael Fath show. Thweet Jethuth, thith ith gonna be great!") and he's a very sloppy shredder. Not a big fan, though I think he writes pretty damn well. > SHAWN LANE: I saw this guy's instructional video once. He can play so damned > fast that the notes blur together into a distorted mass - and this is NOT > because he's not playing cleanly!

This guy has some obscene stretches. The only reason I can do any of the licks he plays is because I started doing some stretch exercises that Bafu told me about (possibly jokingly) on IRC a few months ago... basically, you try to make your index and pinky finger = a 180 degree angle... a straight line. After the initial pain goes away, you can get 7-9 fret reaches easily. Lane's videos are instructionally valueless. Just sort of fun to watch every now and then. He actually has a long clip of his first video as one of le lessons on his second video, which I think is completely and utterly bogus. He's got 3 albums out with Jonas Helborg on bass as well, all still readily available. Very improv/fusion type stuff, all live or live in the studio. Check it out. Paul Gilbert and he are Buckethead's main influences. Lane is where the atonal weirdness comes from

    > If you *ever* see his disc "Powers of Ten" just buy it.

And count yourself lucky. It's out of print. Those of us with the cd are few and far between!

    > PAUL GILBERT: Paul is an awesome guitarist. I don't have to comment here, He's in a league of his own, completely.

    > JOHN PETRUCCI: Not much needs to be said on this list.

Yeah... JP has almost perfected his style. We've seen him break away from his influences of Vai, DiMeola, and Yngwie and really become John Petrucci. And he's certainly not getting lazy, so I think soon hw WILL be worthy of the praise you give him! Definitely on the up and up!

I'll make my own list of guitarists to discuss later. This post is already too long!
