Yeah, Paganini's Caprices have been transcribed for classical guitar and
performed by Eliot Fisk. I don't have the CD, but I have heard excerpts
from it and it is hard to believe that this guy can pull it off. All I
have to say is WOW! I know Michael Fath has performed one of the caprice's
on the album "Shake" I believe. And that waste of flesh moron, Maestro
Alex Gregory works the same caprice into on eof his song's on his CD as
well. Great vocals by Mark Baols though. Too bad Gregory can't play for
ca-ca. And to think he is taking a wizz on Malmsteen and Vai's graves on
the front cover of the CD. WHATEVER!!! Anyway, hope that helps.
Shred 'til yer dead!

This homey (or should I say Homo to keep with the trends on this list?) has
extremely good taste in guitar players!
> Out of curiosity, since you label Petrucci's technique as "good" and

> technique and be a better songwriter?
DiMeola, Becker, VAIVAIVAI, Satch, Eric Johnson... just to name the first
couple. There are many more. But this is an opinion type question, so no one get
their panties in a bunch. :)
> BLUES SARACENO: A CT native, as am I, he lives up to his name "blues" rather

Everyone and his mother should hear Hairpick, if only to hear a GODLY guitar
tone! Blues is one of the best attitude players out there! He really beats the HELL
out of the strings, and is one of the cleanest (read: no string noise or sloppiness of
any kind) players I've heard.
> GARY HOEY: Once again, I wouldn't necessarily call Gary a shredder, but he

This guys is supposedly a great live showman. I don't care for his albums too
much, though I know they have a Satch-type of appeal. It's very listenable, just not
my own cup of tea... a bit too old school.

Agreed completely.

All musicians love log err- Tribal Tech. They are the kings of fusion, and
songs like Jakarta from Reality Check have a unique emotional ability... just amazing
grip on your soul. Gary Willis is the best bassist I've ever heard (LIGHT YEARS beyond
Myung, but a different style) and the drums and keys on TT's albums are impeccable
(moreso than my spelling).
> LANNY CORDOLA: I haven't heard his music! Who would you compare him to?
He's a Michael Fath type player. Never did much for me. Big on the Christian
Rock circle.
> STEVE MORSE: Morse simply makes my brain recoil.
This is a Marquis player. Perfect in just about every aspect. Another guy I'd
put above JP, (most of the dudes I'm putting before JP are simply more accomplished...
been at it for a lot longer than JP... that makes a big difference). Everyone on this
list should have heard SOME Dixie Dregs or SOME steve Morse, if only on the Medley off
ACoS. Just fabulous.

Nononono, nothing like that. John Myung is going to bite John Petrucci's ear off, and then shave his head. Then Ben Laussade is going to find the ear *and* the hair and get on Letterman to talk about it.

Just wanted to point out a few things about this sentence. First of all, it's a run-on. Secondly, each half of this sentence is an opinion that can be agreed or disagreed with. But here's the important part. The truth of the first part does not dictate the truth of the second part.
Let me rephrase that more clearly. Music that is not prog is not bad because it's not prog. (There is also plenty of bad prog and good non-prog.)
And, BTW, you're talking to a whole list of people that think that Primus is one incredible band, so watch how you word your opinions. I've heard that people on this list like to flame people.

I saw Mr. Big live on the same tour this video was shot during. Sheehan's solo is truly incredible. I was lucky enough to be in the front row, right in front of Bill's rig. Ouch. I almost quit playing bass there and then.

Have you guys ever seen MacAlpine or Gilbert's instructional videos? Talk about scary guitar playing! Tony MacAlpine didn't seem too comfortable on camera, but Paul Gilbert is a natural teacher. Most shredders will rip through a guitar lick and say, "now lets play it fast"!!! Paul and Tony really take the time to really show you their stuff while still throwing in some terrifying solos.

Well, I just spent since yesterday afternoon without power, thanks mainly to the incompetence of the power company to repair simple power lines blown over. Fortunately the computer was off at the time because I was worried the storm would affect it... but that's nearly an entire day without CD production. Figures. And now I get to replace all my food, too. Cute. Just cute.

Heheh, I never heard Steve Miller in there before. Although I did hear the melody line from Bohemian Rhapsody - "Turn off your mind (?), you can find all you need with your eyes" = "So you think you can stone me and spit in my eyes." /me likes :)

I remember a transcription in Guitar for the Practicing Musician for parts of 24 Caprices, but I'm not sure who did it. Michael Fath, maybe?

Les Claypool is a very good bass player with a sense of humor that makes my day whenever I hear Primus' music.
>Do Gilbert and Sheehan ever solo during Mr. Big shows? What about Torpey? >I'm talking long, extended spotlight stuff. ??
Well, the only time I saw Mr. Big was in New Orleans when they opened for Rush, but Sheehan and Gilbert both took extended solos with actual spotlights on them. From what I remember, Gilbert's solo was similar to the one on the Lean Into It home video, but Sheehan's was very different. They kept a leash on Pat Torpey, though. -- *********************************************************************** * Mark Peters -- swifty@auburn.net -- Auburn University, Class of '99 * * Ytsejammer, tape trader at http://www.auburn.net/~swifty/index.html * ***********************************************************************

QUIET ROOM ---------------
A Ray Alder Clone on vocals. It sounded so much like Alder than I had to look at the liner twice. This band is like a heavier version of FW's Perfect Symmetry, with solos that sound similar to those of Jason Gobel and Paul Masdidal of Cynic. The rhythms sometimes reminded me of DT meets Carcass's Heartwork album.
PICKLE ---------------
Easily the best band name suggestion I've heard on this list. Crunchy, soggy, or dill.

Dave is the most redeeming quality on Fath's (Oh great... the autolisp is back) albums. He's a great bassist.

That's such an opinion based statement. In fact, my opinion would state almost the exact opposite, too. I honestly don't believe that JP can do anything that Vai can't, and I KNOW there are things that Vai can do that NO ONE can. Certain tricks involving pulling the strings off the neck, whammy tricks, and circular vibrato, and so on. Plus, Vai has an immediately recognizable style, whereas JP hasn't developed that just yet, IMO. Some of Vai's lines are just bizarre-impossible too... most of Petrucci's stuff is scalar and pretty easy to grasp.

This guy could singlehandedly put me on the bad traders list for life. I've owed some kick ass video-age to Carlo for over half a year, and run into every problem imaginable in getting the tapes to him (2 VCRs no longer record now). And my history is one of a slow trader too, so I've pretty much stopped trading with people, except for free trades (Compilation tapes, etc). I always find a way to make up for my slowness though.

All in all, it was a MIGHTY show. And had we not been able to get into the Hard Rock Cafe party the night before, we might have been in quite the foul mood afterwards. Hi all!
What would you think of a 60 minutes
song from Dream Theater?
I listened to A pleasant shade of
gray from Fates Warning and I found
it interesting.
But I'm sure DT is able to write
a better masterpiece than FW.
I know it won't be for today because
the new album is coming but I think
it could be a great project for the
future...
Any comments?

Well, even if tube IS louder watt per watt,
How often does a solid state blow out? I mean, really...is it worth the security that you'll never end up like Dave Mustaine and Vic and the Rattleheads, in the middle of one of your thrashier songs, near the end solo, and a tube blows?
And how often does a tube blow in Mesa Boogie products btw? I know there's a 6 month guarentee...but if I went out and bought one of those fine amps (no sarcasm here), I wouldn't have any money for replacing blown tubes. Knowing my luck, the day after my guarentee wears out, POP....no more sound from my somewhat newly purchased amplifier.
Then again, I'm still playin' through a Morley wah pedal and a little Crate GX 20M practice amp. It's a solid state amp, and while it may not be the amplifier to use for actual performances, I'm getting damn good tone out of it!
Oh, this brings me to another guitar question: What pickup (bridge, preferrably) from whatever company have you ever used that just blew you away? Vince just slapped a Seymore Duncan Trembucker in his Ibanez and MAN, that thing just wails (more)! I mean, I'm prolly gonna go out and get my own trembucker sometime before this summer ends...that thing just rocks, but if anybody else has ever used something that just pierced yer ears and made you smile 10 miles wide, I'd be interested in that too.
