Thanks to the Doc and others for the great reviews of the Enchant gig,
seeing them in the flesh is just a dream for me (as is seeing any of my
    fave bands).
Did anyone who went to the gig get a decent quality recording from it ?
I'd be very interested in trading with you if you did.

Another violinist in a progressive band ( IMHO) would be Eddie Jobson
    from Jethro Tull, Zappa, etc.

HitNF is definitely a more mellow album than anything previous except
    maybe parts of
Empire. Personally I find it great to listen to when I want to mellow
out (or when I have a splitting headache.) Many Queensryche fans,
however, listen to the band for their heavy sound. I like the album (
except GaL) for its own accomplishments, although O:M still has its
    place on top.

In the CD player : "Freaks of Nature" - Kansas (anyone else like this
    album?)

Well, I do agree with Bafu that I am NOT a fan of Queensryche anymore... but of their older material... but on the flipside... I don't understand the base loyalty of fans who support a band no matter what they do, like people who like HITNF just because it's Queensryche... this is not religion... you don't have to pay tribute at the altar of fallen gods... ;)

So like I said before... fuck Queensryche... I don't support em now... I didn't buy the new album nor did I go see them...

It's like if Bafu made an album I liked... and then made another one I didn't like... I wouldn't say to him, "Bafu, your new stuff is good too..." I would say, "What the fuck did you smoke Bafu?"

Heh, I know for a fact that two people in Boston have at least 15 DT CD's, and probably more like 20, and unfortunately, none of them are me. Me? I have only 9. Anybody want to bequeath their DT CD's to me if they die in a tragic blimp accident?

    ===========================================================================

Checked out the Boston Rudess and Morgenstein show at Berklee, and yet again, they rocked the house. They played a couple of tunes that I didn't recognize, but one that after the show I realized was Odd Man Out. They did play a new little moody tune called NightWind. Nice song. They played Don't Look Down, Drop the Puck, Crossing Over, Odd Man Out, Night Wind, and Over the Edge (I think). Again they did the clinic thing, which was pretty much the same thing as the Danvers Clinic, but this time Jordan did a little idea on what he does to practice at his level. The thing I realized while he was doing this, is just HOW FAST his fingers move on that keyboard. It is utterly AMAZING. Both Jon, Eric and I were both shaking our heads in disbelief at how fast the notes screamed out of that keyboard. It is a sight to see. Rod Morgenstein is a sight to see, as well. I've never, ever seen someone play the drums like that before. I'm a big fan of Portnoy, but like Jon Parmet said, "There is no substitute for 25 years of drumming experience." He is that good live. Their album, for sure, is an awesome progressive piece of music, but in the end, it pales in comparison to the live music that these two put out. You can tell that they are not just playing, they're PLAYING!!!! So check it out. The advance copies of the album are available at Jordan's web page at http://www.bway.net/~jordan under update on the little keyboard.

Hi Eric, another fellow Jammer met at the Show, and sorry that the place we all went to eat supper was so damn expensive. Hope to see you at the Queensryche show at Great Woods.

    >Uhm...<cough>...bullshit. If a band puts out an obviously subpar album >(which I would say is the case because about %90 of QR fans I've talked to

This reminds me of something that happened a couple of weeks ago. There's this guy I work with who listens to Steve Vai and Pink Floyd. Cool, I thought.

So I said to him, "Hey"

So he said to me, "Sup?"

So I said to him, "You heard of Dream Theater?"

So he said to me, "Yeah, but they suck, they're 80's glam man"

So I said to him, "What makes you think that?"

So he said to me, "Just look at their singer, he sings like a girl, looks like a girl, and people only like him for his butt"

So I giggled wildly and then I kicked his ass.

The moral of the story? DT rules, and if anyone says otherwise, you should kick their ass.

    > Um, dude, alot of us actually _like_ the heavier, faster attack of Mr. >Sherinian, and what he's currently bringing to the music. I think this is >gonna be the best DT album yet, and I can't wait. You can't just wish for >another I&W. That would eliminate the progress fror DT and they would >cease to be progressive IMHO. DT just wants to progress HEAVIER!! BUGA

Based on what I've heard of the new songs, I'm not so optimistic. Derek just doesn't have the same magic as Kevin, and I think it's going to be the worst album yet. :( It'll still be a great album because it's DT, but DT just aren't DT without Kevin. That keyboard lead at the very end of the instrumental section in TTT is the most fucking incredible thing I've ever heard in my life. It's only about 8 bars, but I don't think ANY other keyboardist could write something that awesome.

BTW, a petition to bring back Kevin? Well, we can dream ... <sigh> ... actually, I think DT would be pretty cool with TWO keyboardists!

well, now that i saw someone wondering about it, and fueled by mike's ever so lovely king's x analysis, i think i shall do a shot on the t.i. tip. here goes:

    1) 89 demo yes, this what got them discovered by jason newsted, of that sellout band (ha!) metallica. some verrrrrrrrry fast arrangements of songs from their 1st album, and a cover of "red barchetta." it's cute, but let's move on.

    2) songs for insects one of the 1st things you notice off the bat is that these guys are heavy- very heavy. musically, this is the most progressive sounding of their albums- mind you, not the heaviest, because they get much heavier later on. think of nine inch nails with a lot less synthesizers. the guitars are pretty interesting. 6, 7 stringers, fretless guitars, stick- these guys weren't your fender mustang band. the lyrics are fascinating! they're all in prose form, they seem long as hell, but then the song lasts like only 6 minutes.

the songs to listen to: -third eye- a ti staple. -cornerstone- in light of all the mood music, this song makes me want to murder, sodomize and pillage small countries in the middle east. -daughter mobius- cheesy intro, but it gets so heavy, i feel like i weigh more than my mother and merlo's mother put together (merlo, i personally have no clue how much she weighs, but mine ain't no carmen electra). -the challice vermillion- for some really good headbangin', this song musically frightens me.

words or phrases that make you think they're on crack- "thighs held tense and wet deserve salicious care. risque' like death i maim guests slowly. love is all i need."

    3) mods carve the pig i had no idea what to expect when i bought this cd. i almost died laughing at the first song. this album is generally heavy (maybe more so). again, the lyrics just get weirder and weider, but now the music seems to have more texture to it, at times.

songs to listen to: -horsepowered; if you want to get shellshocked and you're masochistic, this is perfect. do NOT ever have sex to this music. it stops becoming romantic. it becomes a battle for survival. - boil; makes me think a lot of megadeth. -michigan jesus; this song is hilarious, and short. maybe one of my favorite ti songs all time. also, we begin to see a theme- the drinking theme in the lyrics. not stupid high school "let's drink and fuck." it's more like "let's drink and kill ourselves". which although is only a little better than hs, it's a lot more freaky. -patiently waiting for summer; incredible tune. simple as that.

words or phrases that make you think they're on crack- -"cappucino, darvans and vodka. pente'....courvoisier. nitrous. kareoke. cornbread patrick. albert hoffman dreams a windchime...." -"brent: christ the girls are onto you, a godless herd, but i don't believe in god either jesus: and neither do i."

    4) outer space is just a martini away. alcohol, anyone? strange theme, but it's getting everywhere now. the music sounds a lot more industrial, and less progressive. but the overall sound is better. guitars have a lot more balls now than before. testament, anyone? i know, they're not industrial, but it's about as heavy.

songs to listen to: -love is america spelled backwards- if at least for the title. -fairy; awesome piece. heavy, frightening, evil. -dante' dangling from a noose; this is a weird one. i hear 80s rush and the police (!!) in the beginning. just a lot heavier of course. sharron sours- another weird tune. a ballad, maybe? this was eery live.

words or phrases that make you think they're on crack: -"hey, hey let's drive to the grave. now are cars are a gay parade. hey, hey, let's drive to the grave. we'll bury meat on a rainy day." -"you can't walk today. purchase and obtuse. i will melt and flow a mile, but what sees earth move when you're dead?" -"fake your death. drive your pinto to a pier on lake michigan. jump a train. watch your pinto on the pier burst into flames." -"miasma will befriend like a well-oiled palm."

i didn't include their new one b/c i want more time to listen to it first.

as you get more recent, songs get shorter, heavier, and lyrically more bizarre. this is just a portion of what i could say about these guys. anymore comments would be awesome.

hearing some of the responses to thought industry here on the jam made me think of my own experience with this band- very similar to the one david edwards described about seeing them at a bar in colorado.

i had the fortune of catching them on st. pat's day at a gothic industrial club called the "batcave". my girlfriend at the time was a huge gothy-type, and she always wanted me to go this place, and when i heard thought industry was playing there, i said "sure...." i got to do the goth thing (imagine a girl in all black, with a guy wearing a dt shirt and BLUE jeans with sisters of mercy and white-boy dennis rodman lookalikes in the midst). eventually, i got tired of it, and went down to the "industrial" part, and there they were, hanging out and selling cd's and shirts. i got to meet them (a really great bunch of guys- they're fucked up as hell, but they were way cool). herb, the new bassist and i started talking a whole lot about zappa (who we both admire), and then at about 2 am, they finally started playing. me, my girlfriend (half asleep by now), 2 metal blade rep's, and 2 girls who were putting their hands up each other's crotches (and they left halfway thru) got to witness these guys playing. finally at about 3, they stopped, said thanks, and it was off to atlanta.

funny thing- when brent oberlin (singer) went to sign my cd, he saw my shirt and said "hey- we opened for dream theater here in new york a few years back." my jaw dropped. anyone who knows anything about this and has a boot or something, email me privately.

as to them being a band in trouble, i think you hit the nail on the head, dave. they'd probably not admit it, but if it weren't for the fact they happened to be signed to metal balde (and this is without the promotion other mb acts are getting), they'd be...who knows? the next echolyn? the next magellan? bands who people like i would have never heard of, if it weren't for fucknuts on mailing lists like the ytsejam.

although i see david's (valid) reasons in not exactly recommending them, i'm going to say "fuck it" and say "if you've got the chance to pick up a cd, by all means." ben lassaude (or maybe someone else) claims to have gotten it in a dollar cd rack. thus, i'm sure someone else can, too. i will be honest and say that their newer material has become less progressive. but so has queensryche. i don't think "progressivity" should matter exactly. but whatever- the music is still good, the lyrics have always been and will always be crazy (as ben's sig the other day demonstrated). i'm not campaigning for them to go platinum, i just think these guys are worth mentioning.

whatever. if you skipped this post anyway, blow me. don't worry, at least i won't give you mono this time around.
