I didn't see you, or anyone else in any DT related shirts. I pretty much
didn't leave my seat the whole time, as the place was too crowded to wonder

I've met Mosh in real life, and we both know that we share tons of opinions about music. So it's going to be difficult for me to piss him off. Sorry I can't be more volatile, but to make up for it I'm going to post LOTS AND LOTS OF SHIT so that all the people who disagree with me can attack my rhetoric at one source.

    > From: drkhoe@gms.gmsnet.com (Dr. Mosh) > Subject: Re: Queensryche, Farewell, OOPS!!, Puh-Pounded > > By the same reasoning, "Are they Queensryche??"

Queensryche can make whatever kind of music they want. They're still Queensryche. They aren't your dog, they aren't your toy. No one is forcing you to enjoy them, or listen to them, or even pay attention to their new album. But it makes no sense to me when someone says, "I like Mindcrime and Rage and the Warning, but everything after those albums is total garbage. Oh yeah, I don't like their EP that much, either. But yeah, I consider myself a Queensryche fan." Does anyone see a problem here? Am I alone in thinking this to be a really shallow viewpoint of a musician's work? Has anyone else on this list ever heard statements like this?

This is the same fixation that a lot Metallica fans seem to have with "Master of Puppets." Personally I don't understand why so many people want little more than for a band to repeat itself album after album. If some unknown group from Bunghole, Mississippi had come out with "Load," I think a good deal of people would have been knocked on their asses. But since it's from Metallica, there's a gigantic "fan" base of people who want to hear more of what's already been done.

I can't really argue about this stuff because I don't understand it. And I don't want to, which I guess makes me really ignorant and afraid of the truth. But I guarantee you that I can listen to and enjoy a hell of a lot more music than the average Metallica fan who wants "Puppets II," mainly because that sort of person can't open their fuckin' ears and accept the fact that people change. If discovering new music is the price I have to pay for being stupid, oh well.

    > NO, because they have abandoned all that Queensryche stood for...

Who are you to dictate what Queensryche "stood for?" Who is anyone other than the members of Queensryche, The Band Itself to determine what the band "stood for?" Are you the newly-inducted sixth member of the band? Can I be the seventh?

    > progressive metal with integrity. What is HitNF??? An attempt to gain > mainstream acceptance. So why should I support Grungeryche?? I'm not > a fan of grungeryche but Queensryche... and they are no longer that...

Grungeryche? Funny, I thought Queensryche was from Seattle. Kinda hard to be accused of imitating something that you yourself started. Don't kid yourself, grunge never would have existed had the harder music not existed first. Don't tell me grunge is some kind of generation-skipping gene that really would have developed after 50's swing, and it's just that rock'n 'roll got in the way and subdued the birth of grunge for thirty years. Compare Alice In Chain's first album to their latest, you'll hear a difference. "Facelift" wasn't too far off from every other metal album I purchased back then.

Yes I'm aware that HITNF sounds like every other alternative album out there. My point is, accusing Queensryche of "turning grunge" is like accusing Malmsteen of "buying into the whole neo-classical thing."

Just a minute bit of detail to add to the otherwise flawless reviews of new DT material. Regarding BURNING MY SOUL, the middle instrumental portion of the song, IMHO, bears an uncanny resemblance to Rush's JACOB'S LADDER, especially the music following "All at once the clouds are parted..." I'm slightly surprised I've haven't seen this brought up. JP's progression of notes towards the latter part of the song almost seem to mirror Lifeson's progression. Portnoy's fills are also similar to Peart's, although the latter seems to add a bit more texture and temporal irregularity than what I've heard MP perform. While the Jam is speaking of Mood Songs and I'm referring to Jacob's Ladder, how about placing the two together? Especially the version from Exit Stage Left. Oh boy, you wanna talk about an emotional buildup. You wanna talk about Puff Daddy keyboards from the late 70s/early 80s? You wanna talk about the fattiest, most penetrating Rickenbacker bass sound from Geddy? It's like Billy Dee says regarding a Colt 45: "Works Every Time."

Speaking of working every time, it is that which I must tend to presently.

    Best Regards...

    > A fan is NOT someone who supports a band no matter what they do...

I'm not saying you have to be Geoff Tate's mother. What I'm saying is that in order to call yourself a "fan" you have to possess a certain amount of open-mindedness which will allow you to accept a band's new directions, because sooner or later a band's sound and/or style is going to change. If you aren't prepared for that, if you can't handle it when someone decides to turn the gain down to 2, you should stop calling yourself a fan of the band. Because if you classify a band by a single album and demand that they stay in that classification, the band is doing things that run perpendicular to what you'd like them to do. If you stop liking something, you don't like it anymore. A fan is someone who likes something. If you don't like that something anymore, you're no longer a fan of it.

    > you're getting too much into the technicality of it Bafuhead... :)

It is what it is. I don't make truth, I just argue it. Don't call yourself a "Queensryche fan" if there are huge chunks of their work that repel you and make you wish they'd stop making music. From what you told me in real life, Mosh, if QR's next album is like HITNF, you aren't going to purchase it. Because you don't want to hear more of this shit, because you don't like it, i.e. you'll stop being a fan. Life moves in the present, and Queensryche above 90% of the bands on the planet move in the present. If you want to be a fan of old material, and the band members are still alive, recording new music, expressing themselves with new ideas, you're not exactly all on the same team.

People say things to me all the time regarding "sellouts," things like "this album isn't part of the REAL musician, it's just a passing phase, it's an ERROR, etc." This makes no sense to me. If you like it all, you're a fan. If you like one album and there's only one album out, you're a fan. If you stopped liking a band's material twenty years ago, you're a fan of that material, but you are no longer a fan of that band, because the band has moved on into new directions, and they've done it WITHOUT YOU. I have more respect for someone who loses fans by following their aspirations and experimenting with new ideas than someone who consistently does the same damn thing over and over and over because they know it's what people want to hear. By the same reasoning, "Are they Queensryche??"

NO, because they have abandoned all that Queensryche stood for... progressive metal with integrity. ****** 1. I've never heard any Queensryche I'd classify as metal. 2. How in the fuck do you know what Queensryche stands for? Did they ever say "Hi, we're Queensryche. We stand for progressive metal with integrity." I didn't hear them. Changing styles means nothing more than changing styles. Maybe they're not what they meant to YOU anymore, but I'd be willing to bet that they're still being quite true to their own musical ideas. Don't put words in their mouths.

****** I also fully believe that they will return to this sound with their next album because with HitNF they conciously tried to stay away from their sound, which is not trendy, to a sound that is trendy. ****** I wanna know one thing. How in a bloody fuck do you KNOW for a FACT that they CONSCIOUSLY tried to be trendy? Did they EVER say anywhere that "Well, sorry guys. We were trying to be trendy." I don't think so. You can't go around spurting (huhuh) out false assumptions like that just because you refuse to believe that maybe a band changed their sound for no other reason than...THEY WANTED TO.

    Give it a fuckin' rest!

******* Thought Industry...What do they sound like? And I know that they sound like Primus on alot of crack. :) But really, could someone give a tiny review? ******* Songs for Insects: "His jaw does what?" m0ds carve the pig: assasins t0ads and g0d's flesh: "What the fuck was that?!?!?" Outer Space is Just A Martini Away: "Yeah, my pets are suspicious too."

Those are the three most likely responses you'd get from anyone after they've listened to each respective album. Hope it helps :)

****** Ben, just how big IS it? ****** Unbelievably huge.

    ****** Subj: I'm Going Down ****** Wh-h-h-h-h-h-hoa.

****** And on a personal note, as much as I love the songs on WDADU, there's a whole buttload of stuff that we haven't heard from them. I would rather they spend the time recording that stuff, instead of stuff we've heard already. ****** If I didn't know that WDADU was DT's first album, I'd still know that it was their first album, even excluding properties such as sound quality. That whole album is sounds to me like an excuse to show the fact that they can all play their instruments. That seemed the focus more than writing really good music. I do like it though. Not as blatantly shredical as Cacophony. The WDADU highlight: In the middle of El Faga, from the keyboard solo to the end of the guitar solo after it...would make a GREAT soundtrack for a porno, or just a sex scene in a particularly risquet movie. I'd like to see that someday.

    Okay, I accepted the challenge...

I just went and counted all of my DT CD's. To the best of my knowledge, 33 is in the early lead. (If I'm wrong, I apologize). I surprised myself, and at the same time realized that I truly am insane, to find that I have 36 separate discs. The most I've ever paid is $60 on a couple of occasions. (Not quite $90... you got me there!) Let's see... non-Bahr boots... jeez, there's a lot... I think I have 20. Give or take a couple... my room is a bit sloppy. :-)

Okay, you got me. My opinion is bullshit.

    > If a band puts out an obviously subpar album (which I would say is the > case because about %90 of QR fans I've talked to say so) should we force > ourselves to like it because wer're fans of the band?

I find it strange that many of the disgruntled Queensryche fans who have replied to my post have used the word "force." Who said anything about forcing anyone to listen to anything? The choice is completely yours. If you don't like what you see outside, shut the drapes. If you don't like this e-mail, delete it. I'm not saying you have to force yourself to do anything, but being a "fan" of a band takes dedication, as well as a bit of open-mindedness and respect for the band members' decisions as artists.

The mark of any artist is expression, but on par with that quality is the fact that artists *evolve*. What I've noticed is that in many cases, their fans do not. And then, sadly, they stop being fans.

    > I like every album except for HitNF. So, I consider myself a fan of > the band because Queensryche has their own distinct sound that every > album has except for the new one. Wait, you think they will or will not return to the HITNF sound? Personally I hope they do something new. If they choose never to repeat themselves, that's okay with me.

    > No matter how great you think the song-writing is,

Please don't introduce arguments brought up by someone else. I'm not defending songwriting, in fact I'm not defending anything.

    > you have to admit the production style and the song forms lend > themselves to be labeled as grunge, alternative, or whatever you want to > call it. Don't worry, I still put Queensryche on my top-10 non-DT bands > survey entry.

I don't know why there's such a huge question mark over the whole thing. Isn't it obvious that QR sold out? They did it intentionally. They don't want to make good music anymore. They're washed up. They don't give a shit about their fans. They produced HITNF the way they did to intentionally piss people off.

I, Steve, disagree with everything stated in the above paragraph. But I'm sure that the 10,000 or so people I saw filling the entire Gorge Amphitheater last month to its maximum capacity for the QR show ALL agreed with it.
