    it

    >havenīt...")What album would you guys recommend as my first?

If you're already a fan of hard rock,(Which I assume you would be if you
are on a DT list) go with Operation:Mindcrime or Rage for Order. That
has most of their hardest material, but still is inherently Queensryche.
However, if you're not as much of a hard rocker,(i.e., your favorite
Dream Theater(Sorry, I just read the drinking game. ;-) ) song is
Lifting Shadows) you might be better off to start with Empire. It's
    their lightest album.

Complete with burning guitars, bashed up drum sets and sealed with a
    kiss,

    Eric Paul LaRue

Club Bene is located on Route 35 South in South Amboy.....

Coming from the north, you can take the Garden State Parkway South
to Exit 129. That puts you on Route 9 South. Route 9 South
becomes Route 35 South. Once on 35 South, it's 3 lights, and it's
            located on the right-hand side.

Coming from the south, Take NJ Turnpike to exit 11. That puts
you on Route 9 South, which becomes Route 35 South. Once on
            35 South, it's 3 lights, and it's located on the right-hand side.

            Look for Ytsejam T-shirts there..........

Funny you should bring that up - that annoyed me enough to not bother with the band anymore. That, and the singer sounding like Bret Michaels trying to do prog. Hey - there's a marketing idea! Take five guys who can all play, and make one an 80's glam guy, one a neo - punk, one a Marylin - Manson type, one Goth, and one Rapper. Have them play really cool music with really cheesey vocal hooks and rapping sections and shredding guitars and keyboards while biting each other's ears off onstage, but apologizing and being remorseful afterwards.

We could call them Draem Theatre

Man, do Masvidal and Reinhart rip, or what? This is some of the best metal playing I've EVER heard...

To add a little DT content - are the music books for Awake and Images out of print? I've heard that they are, and if that's the case, if there are any fellow players out there that want them, I'd be glad to make copies. They're very accurate (Petrucci checked them), and I've gotten quite an insight into his playing style. Not that that means I can play it... :)

DT will most likely only be playing at Jaxx, as well. There is a lack of a proper venue for this sort of thing in Baltimore, since Hammerjack's is gone. If you like in the Mid - Atlantic, get used to driving to VA - Jaxx is pretty much the tops of the metal clubs anymore, and a lot of places won't touch something like this for fear of losing money on it. Hell, we had to convince Jaxx's owner that Fates would do well. That's something a lot of people don't understand - clubs and promoters bid for these shows, so it looks like no one in Baltimore is asking...

Also, let's get that fantasy football league going! I'm in!

The El Cheapo bin at Tunes in Hoboken Rules.....spent $10 and got the following four CDs........

    Beastie Boys - Ill Communication

I've always liked the Beasties, but only because they has some fun songs to listen to. I never bought any of their albums, but decided to buy this cuz it was $3. Good thing I did - I like these guys evven better. Not only do their songs have a great beat, but they're still fun to listen to, and the kicker is, they play the instruments on the album, when necessary. I heard this story about them once. They were playing a show (Lolla, I think), and the fans were yelling "Play <insert popular Beasties song>". Now Beasties at that time, were kinda popular, but not really.....they played a short set, played some obscure songs, and the crowd wasn't really into it. They then played one of the popular songs, and the crowd was jumping around. Now they're playing they're own instruments, and go into this funky blues/jazz jam type instrumental for like 5 or so minutes.......the crowd then practically booed them off the stage and threw shit at them.....

MORAL: A lot of people don't appreciate good musicians, therefore, they suck.

Downset. - Do We Speak a Dead Language?

OK, this is all I'm saying about these guys.... Take Rage Against the Machine, and then fuse them with Biohazard and Pro-Pain. You have Downset.

Tori Amos - Hey Jupiter (single)

I love this gal.....really, I do......she is just so awesome, it hurts.....the cover of Somewhere Under the Rainbow, in one word, rokznadz.......

five for fighting - Message for Albert.....

ok, so I bought this because of the title.....the cool thing is, I heard of these guys after a Ben Folds Five show. Here's the story (very short):

A guy was handing out bumper stickers. He handed me one, and it just said "Message for Albert......". So obviously, I turn to him and say "Well, what is it?" He looks at me and says "Huh?" (mind you, we're in NYC) I say, "Well, what's the message, dammit? Spit it out" He then looks at me, obviously lacking a sense of humor or wittiness, says "Whatever...." and walk away.....

So I see the CD, and I say, what the hell, might as well. It was a good thing I did.....very piano-based, similar to Ben Folds, but kinda wackier ......good stuff.....

Screaming Headless Torsos - self-titled(?), their only major release...

This was a recommendation from a 'Jammer (forget your name), so I picked it up. Not what I expected, but very VERY funk- oriented music. Great guitarist, cool rhythm and groove..... good vocals as well.....I like it, but it threw me for a loop. If anyone likes funk-type stuff, this is definitely a must-have. Hopefully, the guy who recommended this will give a better review......

That's it on the review front.........

Okay, point taken. But letīs say MP takes away all of his splash cymbals. So in moody tunes he has to hit crashes and chinas, which take up a lot of sonic space and drown every instrument under them. You get my point?Okay, now letīs say he takes away crashes and chinas."Lie"will sound very whimpy then, because thereīs just not enough volume coming out from splashes.I agree that there is a challenge playing with lesser cymbals(hell,I only have a crash,a ride and hi-hats,although Iīm going to expand my cymbal setup soon)But there is also a challenge playing with a bigger cymbal setup, because you have to know what to hit and where.

Was that guys name Colin Bayley or Joe Porcaro?Iīm just guessing.

Hello, Just in case anyone cares, I have a little story to tell before I finish plowing through the Jams in my inbox. Last Wednesday, I come home from work to learn from my roommate that all the CDs in our room had been swiped. The sixth time my fraternity house has been robbed since June. Thankfully, most of my CDs were in storage for the summer, so only the CDs I had purchased since the beginning of June were gone. One problem: Nearly every boot CD I own was purchased in that time: SFAM, Subcon, Acoustic Dreams, Lords of Sound, three Rush boots I borrowed from a friend, and much much more. Naturally, I was pissed. So I fill out a police report and start to scour the local CD dealers. At my second stop, Sam Goody, 'lo and behold, there are my Type-O CD and my roommate's Animal House soundtrack. So we kept looking to see where else the thief might have gone. No luck. The police said they had some fingerprints on CDs that were found in our house that the thief had left behind, but couldn't be sure if they were mine, my roommate's, or the thief's until they took them to the lab. Since I'm staying in my fraternity house for the summer, I was immediately suspicious that it was an inside job; my brothers aren't all trustworthy. Thursday I left for the weekend to get an apartment in South Carolina. Charleston's a great city, glad I'm moving there. I barely thought about the theft until I got back. Called the police Monday and they said to go to a local store, Cheap Thrills. Apparently, the proprietors thought they had some of the discs. The guy had gone there straight from the robbery and sold everything back. The store owners didn't know until the next day that anyone had sold stuff back, as the employee who bought them back was new and didn't record the transaction properly. So they held ALL the CDs they had bought that weekend until we got there and let us sort through them to find ours. The two discs at Sam Goody had been sold to them accidentally by Cheap Thrills. They had almost all 50 of our discs. Subcon wasn't there, but all the other DT boots were! Along with the G3 live disc, MD's new one, and so on. I was so happy. The owner kept apologizing for the situation, even though I kept telling him I knew it wasn't his fault, and he was even losing money off the deal by returning our CDs free. So as I was sorting through the pile, I found King's X, Gretchen... so I decided to buy it as thanks. The owner refused to let me pay! He said just to take it as a token of their apologies and hopes for our future business. They were so cool about it. IF YOU ARE EVER IN NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ, STOP AND SHOP AT CHEAP THRILLS FOR CDS. GREAT GUYS, GREAT SERVICE. I couldn't thank them enough. They said they'd keep an eye out for the other CDs, and I thanked them again. They had given the police the thief's description and were going to look at some pictures, so I hope they get their money back from the bastard. And it was definitely not one of my fraternity brothers, as the person's ethnicity combined with the decription matched none of our members. All in all, I still want to get the bastard and pound the shit out of him (can you say *pancake*?), but I'm happy to have my $300-400 worth of CDs back. But I have an aluminum baseball bat waiting for the motherf**ker and boy am I ready to use it... -- ______________________________________________________________ "Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter..." -Yoda, the Jedi Master ______________________________________________________________ Andrew Forcier a.k.a. I've been quieter for the last couple of days, eh? Work's picked up a bit. Feast or famine, indeed....

    >From: Nigel Bridgeman <nigelb@powerup.com.au> > >Some thoughts: > >I'm a big Queensryche fan. I like HitNF. I wouldn't say I love it, I >would in fact say that it is their weakest album to date, which, when you >consider what it's up against, isn't saying much.

This is just about exactly how I feel about the whole thing. And, I suppose this is as good a time as any to plug me a little -- I've put some album reviews up on my page. It's just a beginning of what I've got planned, but there IS more to come. If you haven't checked in for a while, I've beefed things up all the way around on my page. In any event, the Queensryche album is one of the four (yeah...there are only four at the moment, and, with work as it is, it may be a couple of weeks before I get the next batch up) I've looked at.

So there we have it. And then there's the converse...

    >From: "Gordon Cook" <acook@tiac.net> > >I've heard this argument from Metallica fans, Queensryche fans, and even >Megadeth fans back when CtE was considered a sell-out. Look at the numbers >here. Conveniently, these bands just happened to have a sudden affection >for what happened to be popular at the time. Hmmm, I wonder why Metallica >and Queensryche didn't decide they liked to go a route more like death >metal, or a prog rock route, or big band jazz, or acid rock, or whatever >fuckin else they could have "evolved" into. I'm sick of everybody telling >me these bands are just evolving when all they ever do is "evolve" into >what is currently popular! How convenient for album sales! This is why Hero >of the Day sounds like the Smashing Pumpkins and Sign of the Times is right >out of Everclear's latest album. Flame away.

Well, part of what you say IS true. People tend to be influenced by things that ARE happening musically, rather than things that AREN'T happening musically. But all of those bands, along with a whole load of others -- Rush, Genesis, Jethro Tull, and Yes among them -- have made movements towards writing shorter songs. That disappoints a lot of folks, and I can understand the reasoning. But there are some great albums that have been released by bands who've moved to writing shorter songs -- "Hold Your Fire" is, of course, my favorite album. "Crest of a Knave" was a hell of an album (and "Catfish Rising" isn't too much behind that)...as I've discussed before, "Invisible Touch" and "We Can't Dance" actually have some pretty clever musical doings on them. And I suppose I should be embarassed about this, but, outside of "Fragile," and maybe "The Yes Album," "Big Generator" is my favorite Yes record.

And things DO go the other direction. I mean, it wasn't like thrash was about ultra-long, intricate, progressive sounds when "...And Justice For All" was released. What you hear Metallica say about that album is the same sort of thing you hear Rush say about "Hemispheres" and Ian Anderson saying about "Thick As A Brick." Something along the lines of "We reached a certain point of that record where we felt like we'd done everything we could writing in that style. What we decided to do is to try something else; a new way of approaching the writing process." And I believe those folks. You run the risk of repeating yourself if you don't take chances, do a new thing every now and then.

I'm going to use this as an example of what I'm talking about and hope I'm not thrown off into the abyss for it. I don't hear "Hero of the Day" as a Smashing Pumpkins knock-off, but let's go for an even more sedate piece -- "Mama Said." Using a steel guitar in a country-flavored tune follows which trend? I mean, C/W IS popular at this point, but I don't think emulating Alan Jackson is something that Metallica would immediately identify as "trendy." And the songs, while not particularly "progressive," per se, are long, which isn't a particularly commercial attribute.

And I feel much the same way about Queensryche. Their latest isn't my favorite album. I'll even say it's my least favorite. But it's good...and I don't think they sold out, for what it's worth.
