    Buck:
    > Jazz drummers: buy any Branford Marsalis album with Tain Watts
    > on drums, or any Miles Davis with Tony Williams. These guys are sick.
    > And I won't even mention Buddy...

That's interesting, Rod did :) At the RMP clinic, Rod Morgenstein
mentioned those guys (RIP Tony, you absolutely ruled!, jazz heads look
for Tony on a McCoy Tyner album!!!) along with Dan Gottlieb as those
generally regarded as having THE finest technique of any drummer out
    there.

To make a long story longer:

Rod said he was hanging out with Dan one day, and Dan noticed Rod was
using his hand to bring the stick back up. Dan mentioned that doing it
this way is all wrong. The laws of physics say that the stick will come
back up all by itself, thank you :) Don't expend the extra energy. So
Rod goes: "You mean I've been doing it wrong all these years ????" This
got a good laugh from the Berklee crowd.

And this is from a guy who just spent the last hour or so playing the
absolute crap out of the drums... That was sort of his point, though, I
guess. He said no matter how fast/complex Dan Gottlieb is playing,
there's just no tension in his arms/hands/etc. You could pick the sticks
out of his hands with little to no effort.

Got me paying attention (and I ain't even a drummer :)

    Regards,

    Jon

    Oh man...

You aren't kidding when you guys mention Mr. Kruger for post of the year. I was ROFLMAO (Is that the right acronym? I gotta check the FAQ...) :-D

I actually started to get inspired to work on "Queensryche Is Faded", but then I realized that it would be a conflict of interest since I still love the band!

Ah well.... it's tough to have a conscience sometimes! :-)

wow............someone else besides me even knows who they are. shit!

i got to check em out recording one day (my friend works at a studio in nyc, and poof- there they were).

they are definitely NOT what you would expect to listen to. they are REALLY funky, and they love their miles davis. i've also had the fortune of catching them like 5 times, and i've heard a couple of b-sides...one was "little wing", and another was a prog-funk (?!?!) tune called "9/8". it funks hard, and it's in 9. and no, not 3 groups of 3 (it ain't no funk waltz!).

these guys are all a bunch of musicians who have done some interesting things in the past (the guitarist, dave fiuczynski, did an album w/ john medeski of mmw, for instance), and they're really good. unfortunately, they couldn't keep their act together, and so they've broken up, which really sucks, cause i loved hearing them.

i won't go all out with a review, since someone else has that covered, but i'll only say that if you get their album (their only one), my personal favorites are "vinnie", "wedding in sarajevo", "smile in a wave" and "kerme's macabre" (the one with the pink floyd lyric quote). looking foward to your review, walter.

ps- i'm actually going to check out a new band with the singer from this band called the "dean bowman soul thrillogy" tonight or tomorrow, all part of the ny music festival (i'll be posting a review soon about an act i saw).

who? what?!?! yep. the rev. daddy love. this is a band which features corey glover, the ex-living colour singer. i saw them wed. at the continental in nyc. and simply put, it was awesome.

it's a big band (maybe 7), and they come out doing "dazed and confused". glover comes out with this rodman-esque hairdo, and then they go nuts with that tune, and then some of their stuff.

they did really interesting covers of steve miller's "the joker", and "love rears its ugly head" (which was almost reggae-ish; way laid back), and "cult of personality."

awesome band- the rhythm section reminds me alot of the one on bowie's new album. they can go wild, but then they just shut up and it's pretty. the guitarist looked like a sam ash beefcake, but did a good job playing away. they have a cd coming out in a few weeks called "rev. daddy love", so all you living colour-addicts might want to check this out.

    mojoman, welcome back, ya fucknut.

I'm writing this in response to the Exhibit-A question...

My buddy Phil Bennet, (Alex's keyboardist) got a gig with the band Starship. I think Exhibit-A fell apart shortly after that. They recorded a few demos, and that's about it. Alex has a new band called, "The Skol Patrol" also featuring Michael Mannering on bass.

My kind of post. Thanks, Mike.

    > Some of these are pretty cool, especially if played with a drone:

Time to hit the local Rent-A-Bagpipe...

    > Japanese: 1 b2 4 5 b6 8 > Kumoi: 1 b2 4 5 b6 8

Any Nintendo fans in the audience tonight? These two scales are the same. Pick one of them and play it rapidly over multiple octaves, up and down. Very reminiscent of the intro to "Legend of Kage."

Speaking of Nintendo, someone on this list was going to send me a recording of the "Kid Icarus" opening music for me to transcribe. Is this person still here?

    > Mongolian: 1 2 3 5 6 8 > Chinese: 1 2 3 5 6 8

These two are strangely similar to each other. At first the pitch intervals sounded somewhat familiar, but I couldn't place them. Then I noticed that I could play the bassline from "6:00" with them, so I guess they're major pentatonic. I've never really fooled around with the major pentacostal scale, but I was reminded very much of the few negro spirituals I've learnt in my lifetime with this scale. Appropriately named scales, no?

    > Oriental: 1 b2 3 4 b5 6 b7 8 > Double Harmonic: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7 8

These are the same, too, just starting on a different step within the scale.

    > Egyptian: 1 2 4 5 b7 8

You can hear a great use of this scale in the musical "Ms. Saigon." A long time ago I learned a piano piece called "The Sphinx" which was based heavily on this scale.

    > Mohammedan: 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8

    True Minor.

    > Byzantine: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7 8

A most eerie and ancient-sounding scale. I can't wait to go to the temple of Isis to try this out with a cello. Pyramid-reverb is great, I don't know why Art and Digitech haven't caught on yet...

    > Jewish: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7 8

I think this is the only scale on the list that actually comes from the geographical location of the people associated with the name. This scale is exactly what I heard Itzhak Perlman doing on that Klezmer album I heard way back when I was a wee lad.

    > Hirajoshi: 1 2 b3 5 b6 8 > Japanese: 1 b2 4 5 b6 8

Play these two scales one right after another. Start them both on the same note. Great hextuplet progression. If I put it into a song one day and you sue me because you've already used it on an album, you'll hurt my feelings.

    > Arabian: 1 2 3 4 b5 b6 b7 8 > Major Locrian: 1 2 3 4 b5 b6 b7 8

These two scales, like several before them, sound strangely like each other. They're also very similar to the melodies I hear in the background whenever I'm fighting Sagat in Street Fighter II. Not that we fight that much, I mean he treats me nice and all...

    > Hindu: 1 2 3 4 5 b6 b7 8 > Arabian: 1 2 3 4 b5 b6 b7 8

Just one little note of difference, and boy does it shake things up.

    > Leading Whole Tone: 1 2 3 #4 #5 #6 7 8

This scale kind of takes a note from the bottom of the Hindu and Arabian schools of scales and crams it up near the top. Sublime efficiency.

    > Jewish: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7 8 + > Persian: 1 b2 3 4 b5 b6 7 8 = > Spanish Phrygian: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7 8

Spanish Phrygian takes the top of the Jewish scale and the bottom of the Persian. The level of multiculturalism present here will most likely astound the passive listener, if not Bill Clinton himself.

    > Gypsy: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7 8

I don't know why, but I really like this one. Must be my ancestry calling.

    > Persian: 1 b2 3 4 b5 b6 7 8 > Spanish Phrygian: 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7 8

These two scales are just one note away from Gypsy, yet the feel of each is to my ears noticeably separate from Gypsy. Too...many...numbers...

    > Overtone: 1 2 3 #4 5 6 b7 8

This one rocks. One of these days I need to learn how to repair my own damn amplifier...

    > Neapolitan Minor: 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8 > Neapolitan Major: 1 b2 b3 4 5 6 7 8

    Sicilian Minor: 1 b2 b3 4 5 6 7 8 Sicilian Major: 1 (1#) 2 b3 4 5 6b 7b 8

There's a wonderful little ditty to be found in Sicilian Major. Fiddle around, I'm sure one of the paisans on the list can figure it out.

    > Enigmatic: 1 b2 3 #4 #5 #6 7 8

Is this what Satch was talking about on "Not Of This Earth?"

    > Iwato: 1 b2 4 b6 b7 8

    IwatoHUH?IwatoHUH?IwatoHUH?IwatoHUH? IsaidIwatowatowatowannaziggaziggaaa...

    > Pelog: 1 b2 b3 5 b7 8

Anyone have any clue where this scale comes from? Is Pelog a country? A type of juice perhaps? Paul Cashman's father?

    > Javanese: 1 b2 b3 4 5 6 b7 8

This is what happens when you drink too much coffee. Makes it hard to walk.

    > Chinese: 1 3 #4 5 7 8

This scale sounds a bit like the Castle Rock theme. Then again, playing this scale up and down over and over reminds me of every science fiction movie ever made. It's the scene where the door is opening. Doesn't matter which door, it's sci-fi, any door will do.

HATS OFF to Joe Kruger!! :D

I don't think so. You don't really believe that, do you? Like he's gonna think, "Boy those children on the ytsejam -- they're such babies that they won't even react to one of my 'Die! Die!' posts. I'm gonna try harder."

    I doubt it.

He'll get to a point where his one mission in life is to get some ytejammers to complain about his posts, doing vulgar post calisthenics and writing Duh! songs in 7/4 in his free time in preparation for the "day when one of them complains"??? Right.

    > Farber did that by posting *three* of those bullshit posts on *one* > digest. Ignoring a problem usually doesn't make it go away.

*Not* ignoring it made it a "problem" in the first place.

New rule on the ytsejam: If someone posts totally stupid stuff like "Die! Die! FUCK YOU!" etc., the first jammer to complain about it gets kicked off the list. Or gets a really bad spanking or something. :)

Yes Dan, I agree, but they WERE a metal band and a damn good one too. It disgusts me. I'm really getting sick of musicians totally upheaving and changing their style to what is the current trend. That IMO is a ploy to sell out, and I never thought this band would.

Second the motion! I owned all the original stuff, but bought this just to have the really good songs together. (At the time I had a Polish CD changer. Take out a disc, put in a disc, so the compilation was more efficient.) (and I can say that 'cuz I'm Polish.)
