Well, I went and bought my stereo system last night. Onkyo/B&W audio,
Sony video. Now I just gotta get out of this apartment so I can crank
it up, as it sounds quite sweet...
Anyway, they guy at the store only had jazz and classical for test CDs,
so I brought in Marillion's 'Brave,' and 'Awake.' Played Erotomania, then
LSOaD, then 6:00. The guy recognized 6:00 as something from the radio,
and declared DT to be wonderful, and said he was going to go buy the album
after he got off work! My first convert!
Then, when we left the listening room, I set my CDs on the counter, and
the other guy working there walks up, looks at them, and says "I thought I
heard some Dream Theater in there." I was completely dumbfounded!

I still like "Live at the Whiskey", good album. Steve's voice has gone

Does anyone know if these two are the same or different. I looked at the

yeah, i didn't say they weren't a metal band (at some point), but they're
not anymore... personally, i don't mind the change. they've still got some
metal in 'em... "the horse that bud bought" still has it. give it more
than one listen. trust me- i thoguht "machine fish" was crap (at
first)...well, maybe not crap. but i was disappointed after a great album
like SIYF. MF has grown a lot on me, and i like this new one as sort of a
continuation on MF but with better guitars and more prominant vocals.

i wouldn't say that this is the case for GC. i've talked to all the guys,
and they've been into the grunge and other stuff from day one. they were
always that type of band (heavy modern rock), but sam taylor polished 'em
up a lot...
alan produces some good modern acts like tellus and the wily gurus. monty
is big into sarah mclaughlin, and he's also mentioned that he likes some of
alice in chains and such. wally is a big retro freak- beatles, even a lot
of yoko ono and some weird stuff... they aren't trying to "go for a certain
sound" to make it big. hell, making it big will never happen on metal
blade anyhow. they're just making music that they enjoy and are excited
by. not everyone will like it, but that's the price paid, i guess. they
still have a lot of metal influences, but it's not just from that angle
anymore.
what it is about an artist is that they meld what they like to hear and
what they hear in their heads together to make their art. i wouldn't call
them selling out... let's face it, not all bands can be the same. not
everybody that is quote "good" has to play a certain style- like metal.
not everybody can be a dream theater, or put out another album like "space
in your face." i'm glad for diversity (though my wallet isn't so glad that
i like so many different things). i think GC melds metal and some modern
and retro feel together nicely. but that's just my take on it...

no. i don't see it as that. these guys are genuine. i've talked to wally
the most, and he's totally gung-ho about what they're doing. they're doing
it to make a living and to still express themselves. BTW, read the
lyrics...i think they're a little better this time around. less (for the
lack of using a better word) spacey, ambiguous, and "weird"...much more
thought, if you ask me...

thanks. disclaimer: that's not why i like the album. :) i liked it back
when i got a dub tape from wally back in mid-may. i just think it's a
solid record. that's all...

First off, you should check out German Music Express at
They have Time Lost (because I looked for it there, but managed to get a copy at the Enchant show last Saturday.... for $15). I've used this particular place for Angra and Symphony X, and they were very good. They only charge $3 shipping regardless of the size of your order, and send your order through certified mail (meaning you have to sign for it.)
CDEurope, on the other hand, while they won't rip you off, they'll take their sweet-ass time getting the CD's for you. They do not have any stock, but merely have "suppliers" from whom CDEurope gets your stuff. You will likely wait two or three months for your order. I only recommend them if you *absolutely* cannot find an item of interest anyplace else.

I made a trip to my local used CD shoppe and happened to happen upon a few gems: Mahavishnu Orchestra, Paradise Lost, and one, Cathedral "Cosmic Requiem", that looked interesting. The name sounded familiar, but my mind was a blank beyond that point. I put it on the player there, and found it worth purchasing, sos I did, see? The thing is, when I come home, I realize where I'd heard of them before. For Christmas this year, my sister gave me a compilation album by Kinesis records featuring a bunch of modern and past prog tracks, none of them popular songs mind you. Anyhow, one of the bands on that was also called Cathedral (did a cool song called "Pinnochio"). They're *not* the same band, are they? Insight?
Also, I stopped in at BestBuy, and picked up, among other things, the Pee-Wee's Big Adventure soundtrack (Danny Elfman classic), which I'm listening to currently. A whim buy, but definitely worth it. I don't care what you may think, but "Breakfast Machine" rules! Ditto for "Clown Dream"...
Hey, anyone going to or planning to go to the Philadelphia Fates show, drop me a line wouldya? Thanks.

Speaking of Nintendo, has anyone noticed how the music of RPg games like Final fantasy (series) and Secret of mana, etc besides being really orchestral, sometimes it tends to be kinda progressive? ..my brother taped some parts of the Final Fantasy 3 soundtrack and he plays it in the car a lot...and it is cool shit...anyone ever notice this?

angra is a great band..of course IMO, but ..ok people say theyre very like helloween,which i cant say because ive never really listened to helloween..but angra is like power metal (ya know fast constant guitars)with A LOT of classical stuff in there (mostly the keyboard stuff behind the guitars) and then some very cool Brazilian influence, percusive and even in the melody sometimes..if you can find it(Holy Land) locally for less than 30 bucks..buy it... in here (Puerto RIco) i saw it a couple of times for $48!! ...then i ordered it from cd connection..and it came for 30 bucks,plus it had a bonus disc, and a bonus track on the Holy Land disc..and it came in a special case and stuff... well hope that helps a little...
