I expect both of these questions to be old ones, but hey, I have been here
for better than a month, and they aren't in the FAQ, so here goes:
First: how do I go about getting one of the much talked about Ytsejam
t-shirts?
Second: Has anybody noticed the difference in size between MP arms in the
ACoS liner? His right arm is fookin' huge! Do you think that he's
flexing that arm for fun, or is he just that much right handed? I know he
used to play snare in a drum and bugle corp, so his arm strengths would
have been relatively even at that time (almost a necessity). That makes
me think he is flexing a little, but I suppose with the amount of drumming
on his kit that he's done since then, it's possible that that is just the
way he's built, now. Any wonderful ideas out there?

OK, I can't say that I have heard any of Weckl's drumming, but I can say
that I read entire posts. If you would have read that entire post
carefully, he said that Weckl was lifting his sticks off of the heads
whenever he hit them. The dude probably had no formal schooling, and
never realized that it's not _that_ much work playing drums. Granted, if
you lift your sticks all the time, you will get some amazing muscles in
your arms, since you are working harder than necessary, but drummers tend
to play slower when they do lift. Ever played a drum roll? You use the
bounce off the head to make the stick move fast enough to make that buzz
sound. If you don't take advantage of that, you're working too hard.
Maybe he should have said "working" instead of "trying".

Live at the Whiskey and Dust in the Wind are CDs of the same show by different company. The liner notes of Live at the Whiskey say something to the effect of this CD is the only one "sanctioned" by Kansas...whatever that means.
On the subject of Kansas.........I drove to Nashville to see them open for ZZ Top (actually I left after Kansas!!!). The sound was a little off but man are they a great band. Since the original violin player is back they are doing some really rare stuff. My advice is to see them as a headliner so you don't miss songs like Song for America like I did Wednesday night.

There may be a correlation, but as long as Scott doesn't buy a kilt to match his bandana (The cool blue one, no doubt) and wear it in the authentic style, everything will be ok from the front row. You file that under scenes we *wouldn't* like to see!

Hey friends -
No, Jay Omega, you are not alone. I think Meat Loaf totally rulz!! I know a lot of bad shit has been said on the Jam about him... I don't know what he's like in person since I never have met him, but I have never seen a performer, much less a singer, who can bring it all to the gig and leave it all on the stage at the end of the night! This dude outlasts ME... and I'm 25! I LOVE Loaf... his personality along with Jim Steinman's musical brilliance make for a potent combination. Anywayz, that's it. Peace, all!

By the sounds of one of Weckl's tracks, "Heads Up", he has not only mastered the drums, but also the bass. He displays his skills vividly on both instruments. But if you listen to his latest solo album, "Hard-Wired", most of the stuff is not that complicated. It's actually pretty straight foward compared to some of his earlier stuff. (w/Chick Corea, etc.) He doesn't try to hard.

It's sad to say, Jon, that you might be in for a rude awakening for saying something like that on this list.
>He has such precision and a > strong feel of keeping the time and such, esp. for jazz!!
I agree. Some of his work on "Master Plan" very complex and amazingly tight for jazz music. I recommend this album to any drummer or jazz fan.

I play with a lot of Weckl too. It is harder than Rush and for the most part, it surpasses Dream Theater. He does use a double bass pedal, but not often. As a huge Weckl fan, I agree, the man is AMAZING!!

Dave weckl is a very,VERY talented drummer/percussionist. He does things on the set that makes some of the stuff MP does, easy!! Anyone who is a fan of Chick Corea's Electric Jazz Band should seek out Dave's three solo projects. They are: Master Plan Hard Wired Heads Up
These are awesome displays of technicality, writting, musicianship and all out playing his balls off!! I am a drummer and have learned a great deal of the DT stuff but, I still can't follow in Dave Weckl's chops. Get it? Got it! Good.

Well... Weckl is not in the same class as Portnoy... he's in a much higher class... he is probably the worlds technically perfect drummer... his timing and articulation are peerless, but it doesn't mean you may like his style... I saw him live with Chick Corea Elektric Band, he was flawless, but John Pattituci was the one that floored me (the bassist).
Among other drummers in a higher class than Portnoy, I would rate Bozzio, Chambers, Phillips, and of course Caluita...
Portnoy is a good drummer, his hand and foot speed are incredible... but his timing live is inconsistent
