The Violent Man (The Silent Man) by George 'DIE!!!' Farber

Yup, I do :-) I have been collecting parodies on the Marillion
mailinglist for a while now (21 so far), and put them on my site.
I wanted to do the same for Dream Theater... That's why I brought
up those parodies, in the first place :-) You can find them at:

                 http://www.prognosis.com/itchy/indexdt.htm

(If you're going to order cds from CD Now please go there through
one of the links on my page :-)) I'll get 5 % in credit if you

Can someone mail me that Pull My Finger parody please ? And other
parodies that aren't yet on my "Ytsejam Parodies" page... Maybe I
should *also* make a page for all those mishearings (Death is the
first Dancing Turtle, Blinded by a pair of dice... etc).

Hey Jammers (Mike in particular), I enjoyed reading your description of King's X's body of work. Since reading that and Martin Popoff's The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal, where he greatly praises King's X, I have purchased both Faith Hope Love and Gretchen Goes to Nebraska. I am very interested to reread Mike Bahr's reviews and descriptions again now that I am educated on the subject. Mike (I believe it was you who wrote those reviews) if you could email me those reviews I would aprreciate it. If you no longer have those reviews, I was wondering if someone knows how I can procure an old issue of the digest. Thanks a lot. Mark

    Hey everyone,

Nah man, Blackie only played the Bass and did the vocals, the guitars were all done by Bob Kulic, Brother of Bruce Kulick (yea, same dude from Kiss)

The actual story, your close, the mother completely ignores the one kid (i.e. main character) and pays more attention to the main characters brother. The father who is an abusive father goes after the main character, beats him etc...but he totally praises the other brother. One day, the brother dies in a car accident I believe and I think it was at that point that the main character decides to leave the house and moves to the city, gets a guitar, rich, drugs, booze etc...(That covers about 4 songs hehe) then reaches rock bottom, tries to reconcile with his mom but can't get up the courage to speak to her. Finally, If I recall correctly, it ends with him wanting to kill himself. It's been ages since I've listened to the disc and it is absolutely incredible as far as music and story goes.

If you'd like yours to be included, email it to me and I'll put it up. I've decided just to include those that the author him/herself submits to me, so that people who wrote parodies they now hate can get away unscathed.

Couple of weeks ago my DT-hating g/f wakes up and says "Morning comes too early", so of course I had to start singing "Nighttime falls too late, sometimes all I want to do is wait . . ." So she's staring at me like I'm nuts (quite rightfully so) - BUT, she did like the melody enough to listen to Surrounded and the rest of I&W later that day. Still not a convert though . . . she likes (whispering) . . . country . . . ugh! This is still a MAJOR sticking point for us, and probably the only one so far. We're moving in together in a few weeks and I'm dreading the arguments already . . . Mike Bahr, count your blessings (and BTW, where's my Precious Things?)

OK, here's my DTDT (Dream Theater Deep Thought):

You know that part in "Metropolis Pt.1" where everybody builds up to an orgasmic frenzy, then they bring you down to a mellow 3/4 interlude right before James sings "Before the leaves have fallen"? Man, THAT is some GOOD music.

    > Well I just got back from two weeks of playing jazz at the University of > North Texas State (recently named the #1 jazz school in the country

OK, this brings up a music-related question that's been driving me nuts - one of North Texas State's great alumni is the saxaphonist who played with the Blues Brothers for awhile, and on SNL, I think - he's a skinny dude with long wavy hair parted in the middle, and a huge 'stache. Anybody know this guy's name? I think it's Lou something . . . Anyway, he was one of the judges at a high-school jazz band competition I played at, in Iowa in 1971 or 1972 - Yea I know I'm old, but this cat is even OLDER - he was famous then (and so was North Texas State in jazz circles). His comment on me was "Has great poise" - what the hell does that mean? He liked the way I stood?

Hey kids, keep up those GREAT DT Lyric parodies - I love 'em!

The short answer is "they feel different." The longer answer is harder for me to write, since I'm rather an amateur at music theory, but I'll try.

(Before I begin, I will tell you that I can't remember the names of the modes, so I won't use them. Someone else feel free to fill them in.)

Play a C major scale, where C is the first note, D the second, etc. This mode has a name, but it's also called C Major or The Major Scale. Now, play the C major scale, but start on D, so it's DEFGABCD. This is called D Something, even though it's in the key of C. This is like the D Major scale, but with the third and seventh flatted. Very dark sounding.

Now play a C scale EFGABCDE. You now have a mode called E Something, but the key signature is C.

So, to say that Phrygian and Dorian are the same thing is correct as much as it is correct to say that C Something (I think that's Ionian), D Something, and E Something above are all the same. C Ionian and C Dorian are *not* the same because they're based on two different scales (even though they have the same root note.)

Just to obfuscate matters more, it's similar to saying that C Major and A Minor are the same. They contain the same notes, but have different root notes.

I hope that wasn't too bad.

Well, I guess I won't post mine, then.

    ----

I just saw the movie Contact. I'm not much of a movie buff, but I know what I like. And I never realized that one movie could have *so* many things that I like about movies at once. It appealed to me as a techno-weenie, as a philosopher, as a cautious atheist, as a scientist, as a person who has loved and lost, as a mathematician... as a person. This was the greatest movie I have ever seen by leaps and bounds. (As a point of reference, before that my favorites included Wargames.)

NOTE: Ladies, don't take this the wrong way, because I don't mean this the wrong way. Guys, don't see this movie with any women, unless you have almost identical lifestyles. I saw it with an English student and an Education student. My greatest concern coming out of the movie was how, why, and when the pattern that Jodie Foster recognized repeated itself. Their greatest concern was how Jodie Foster got her hair done in two hours.

If anyone wants to get into a long-winded exhaustive conversation about this movie, e-mail me, because I didn't get one in real life, and I'm dying for one.

Basically, a mode is when you play a scale staring on a different root, for example, D Dorian has the same notes as the C major scale, only that it starts on D...E Phrygian starts on E, etc..

Some Dream Theater Deep Thoughts.... hopefully some are funny...

The original idea was probably to get Myung to sing on 'The Silent Man', but then they realised that the music wouldn't hold up as an instrumental.

I bet Petrucci originally wrote TSM about Myung, but he got pissed off about it, so they got in a big argument saying things like: "Eat Shit, John!" "Fuck you, John!" "No John, fuck YOU!". But then Petrucci said that he was kidding and it was about the Arabian Nights, and Myung fell for it.

It'd be pretty disturbing to have my soul spread before me... or anybody's soul for that matter.

Mike oughta shave that goatee, because if not, people would start thinking that Frank Zappa joined the band, and that could freak them out because he's dead.

I knew Dave Navarro was learning to play piano, but DAMN, I didn't know he was *that* good.

I told my step-father "I said so", and he was like "Huh!?"

I saw Fish last night in Philly at the TLA.

Mastermind opened....they remind me of ELP without Keys and alot more jamming.

Speaking of ELP they will be in Philly at the Tower (I think Sept 6th).

Fish was excellent. First time in the states in 11 years. This was his second show. I'm not to familiar with all his songs, but I know he played about 5 or 6 off his new one 'Sunsets of Empire'. Played some old ones and also a great mix of Marillion.

Sorry, but I can't remember any of the song titles.

I few funny things happened throughout the night. First Fish was trying to talk and someone yelled from the crowd and Fish said, "Shut the Fuck Up!" and the whole place went silent. He had great control of the crowd especially in leading people clapping (A WHOLE LOT!)

Then during the third song (What Colour is God?) he gave a huge introduction about the song and that it was kind of based on the movie 'Malcom X' by Spike Lee. When they started to play, they had problems with one of the Key monitors (I think) and took about 10/15 mins to fix - any way during this time he was being a stand of comedian - telling jokes and what not....he was funny as hell.

Then at one point a guy threw a TastyKake Huney Bun on the satge and Fish said, "What the Fuck is this? 'blah blah...." and at the end basically called the guy a dickhead (in a funny way) and made an ass out of the guy....but at the same time a girl through a ring on to the stage and he said that it was to small and he was already married and he was going to give it back to the woman that threw it. She said that is was for his daughter Sara and he kind of got emotional thanked her and I believe even went into the crowd and hugged her.

Later during the first encore, third song, Internal Exile, he came into the crowd shaking peoples hand and then started dancing with everyone. It was awesome.

He also passed out bottles of water througout the show 'cause it was hot in the TLA and during the first encore passed a bottle of wine through the people in the first row.

He came back for a second encore and I believe he did Penny For Your Thoughts by Marillion. (I know it was a Marillion song).

Then I got to meet him for a moment after the show, he was in a hurry to meet the people that had after show passes, but we were able to talk to some of the promoters and get a quick 'hi' from Fish. Who by the way is a very tall man.

A lot cooler then I expected, especially after reading his interview in Progression Magazine.

All in all a great evening...so if you get a chance to see the show..go! It is definately worth it!

    Later,

    Bruce D. Duesterhoeft
