The following are a couple of reviews of bands that were not only
mentioned previously on the jam but actually have jammers IN THE BANDS
!! Since I have no formal music training, dont flame me for how I call
    'em. =20

Support your fellow jammers !!!!!! =20

Order the CD from Laser=B4s Edge at http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd/

If you like Symphony X, then it is quite likely that you will love this
CD. Not quite Symphony X, but so what. And, for whatever reason, The
Laser's Edge is not charging gold for this disk which is, of course, an
import. Very similar in the instrumentation and style to Symphony X.
Very intelligently written prog metal with a *very slight* kind of
gothic influence (maybe the power of suggestion). A little overdone on
the double bass for me but I know some people perceive the importance of
this in creating their type of sound. Ties =3D Buy This !! =20

The references to AIC that have been mentioned are easy to understand
because their singer sounds quite a lot like Layne Whatshisface. But
this comparison is not fair. This is more like AIC plus 20 IQ points
across the board. These guys are more progressive, but it may be a
stretch to call them a progressive band. More rock than metal. Maybe
prog-grunge (an oxymoron ??). I guess that this impression comes from
the heaviness of some of the songs. There is slightly more emphasis on
the vocals than I prefer, but so what. They play really well, the sound
is decent and for a first CD, you get something like 60+ minutes. =20

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

    The Bogarts "Bootleg"
    e-mail The Goon at Thrak75@aol.com

Hey - This stuff is a little more jazz funk than metal (to say the
least) but we all know that it is a lot harder to play jazz than rock
anyway, right ?? Since this was from a bootleg, the sound quality
wasn't good, but it is easy to see that these guys are worth a listen.
The Goon plays a really decent guitar !! The only annoying part is the
singer who chit-chats while others are playing .........:) =20

Wow !!! Woke up from a nightmare..
I think I'm quite happy to be on the Ytsejam list..
What was I even thinking of when I joined the Spookykids..
I mean, you'd think we're a bunch of freaks here and
this list sucks, well, think again ! Spookykids is full
of KIDS really, talking about shaving their private places
and other weird stuff, not music. But of course, you think
Manson isn't music at all. I still like them, but the fans
are way out of my league..I'm happy with you guys !!
Just keep talking about music, that's all I ask !! Thanks.

Someone posted that Dorian is also called Harmonic Minor. I just want to
clear up that Dorian and Harmonic Minor are to *different* modes.

    Harmonic minor is simply Aeolian with a rasied seventh. 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7
    Dorian is basically Aeolian with a rasied sixth. 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7

Got it? So what do you call the fifth degree of F# Harmonic Minor?
    Heh. :)

Dorian does NOT equal harmonic minor. Harmonic minor has a natural 7th, and the interval of a minor second from the 7th degree to the root of the scale is the overused interval that Yngwie always uses. Harmonic Minor is 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8.

I've seen lots of half-assed explanations of the modes so now I'll give mine which hopefully will be whole-assed. Modes can be looked at in two different ways. Each mode is based on a different degree of the major scale. In C for example, the second scale degree is D which corresponds to the Dorian mode.

Ok, time to get this all out,

    > This is dorian (1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 8)...It's also called Harmonic > Minor...What characterizes this mode is the b3 and major sixth...it's > very blues/rock sounding...

The first is intervalic formula. Here are the intervals of a major (Ionian) scale in C ...W= Whole tone H=Half tone

    Ionian-W W H W W W H C D E F G A B C

Now, if we were to start from D, the second degree of the scale, we would start from the second interval of the major scale. So the interval at the beginning goes to the end of the line. Watch the pattern as I go through all the modes...

    Dorian-W H W W W H W Phrygian- H W W W H W W Lydian- W W W H W W H Mixolydian- W W H W W H W Aeolian- W H W W H W W Locrian- H W W H W W W

See how after everyone the interval at the beginning goes to the end of the line? By using this interval formula it gives us a scale degree formula. For example the interval formula of Dorian, W H W W W H W, if applied to the key of C major (which has no flats or sharps) will give us...

    W H W W W H W C D Eb F G A Bb C 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 8

The numbers on the bottom are the corresponding scale degrees to the note above it. We can use this formula to go through all the modes, so here it is...

Name Scale Degree Formula Chord Type ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------

    Ionian 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 I maj 7 C D E F G A B C

    Dorian 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7 8 II min 7 C D Eb F G A Bb C

    Phrygian 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 8 III min 7 C Db Eb F G Ab Bb C

    Lydian 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7 8 IV maj 7 C D E F# G A B C

    Mixolydian 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 8 V dom 7 C D E F G A Bb C

    Aeolian 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 8 VI min 7 C D Eb F G Ab Bb C

    Locrian 1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7 8 VII min 7 (b5) C Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C

Anybody who is still confused and wants to give me money for guitar lessons email me. Also, if this works out ok and you guys want me to explain Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor and their corresponding modes just let me know. One can actually use this system for any scale, you might want to try it with some of those exotic scales that were posted earlier.

I know a few people had mentioned winning tickets to see Queensryche at the Odeon, and I heard this morning on WMMS, that it was canceled due to Geoff's voice. I went to see Queensryche at Polaris, and Geoff sang for about 30 minutes, before he thought he was going to totally blow his voice, and opted to reschedule the show...I was wondering if any Cleveland/ Ohio Jammers planning to attend the Blossom show know whether that show has been canceled, or if Queensryche is planning on rescheduling that show, and not even trying? Any information would be appreciated...I guess on the bright side, Queensryche is comming back to Columbus, and I did get to hear 30 minutes of live music...

Thanks for your time! (sorry for no DTC)

Everyone should hammer those html versions and check it out! You might not get to see the pages for much longer... I hear D-Man and Pat Griffin's pages both have testicular cancer.

And yeah, he was hard on proggers (telling people to get out while they can)... I hope you guys realize that he does absolutely mean what he says about how tough it is. If you have the balls to play music for a living, you have to prepare to be broke... even if you have fans and an album deal... you may well be flipping burgers in the daytime. Sad but true. I bet it's worth it just to have one person tell you how moved they were by your album though...
