Amen. (pun intended)
He's not kidding. Singers, guitarists, pianists, anyone. The practice is
great. Whether you're singing cheesy contemporary church music, Bach
chorales, or the Faure/ requiem, you're going to learn quite a bit from
all the time you have to put into it. Even instrumentalists can benefit
from singing in a church choir <especially since ALL musicians should be
able to sing well enough to hold their own in a choir>. Plus, if you can
find a paying church gig it's a good, steady way to make some dough. :)
> Can anyone tell me the most common time signatures used by DT?
Sure: 4/4. :)
Also 6/4, 9/8, 12/8, 5/4.
Mike Portnoy has said that one of his favorite sime sigs is 11/8.

I certainly don't, but I'm gonna take a stab at it anyway.
I think that the "30 years" part refers to the speaker and the
significant other he/she is talking to. I have always thought that the
speaker was saying that he was "betting," for lack of a better word,
that the two of them would be together for a long time, hence the "30
years" line, and "so open your eyes" is a plea for the other person to
realize that. The whole song seems to go along with this idea, to me. As
far as the next few lines, "People in prayer for me/Everyone there for
me," that seems to refer to the person's friends who think that he/she
is beating a dead horse by trying to make this relationship work.
Just don't shave your car for a few months, and growl a lot, and things
will turn out ok :)
In case you haven't noticed yet, there is a potentially wonderful tape
swap brewing. Details are at http://www.auburn.net/~swifty/tapeswap.html

Maybe it was speculatory of a long marriage? Maybe the song is about the
betrayal of adultery, and how the other spouse is left scarred.

So FW is playing up here in Northern CA on 8.22.97. Since there were about
5 jammers at the Enchant gig we went out to Denny's afterward and talked for
a while (a long while considering what transpired with the service in that
F'ing restaraunt freak show!) Anyway, the 5 of us thought it would be cool
to meet again but before the show. There is a TEX-MEX chow shop around the
corner from the club (walking distance) that we could go to prior to the
show after we meet at Club Kaos...what do those planning to attend
think...any takers? Email me with any questions or reservations...i think i
should call in advance to reserve a table for us even if 5 of us go so
please think about it and let me know...i will continue to ask up until the
week before the show.
cheers-

Hi all
just thought I'd better straighten out a couple of points that have been getting
a lot of attention in the last Jams:
1. Scales are commonly found either on fish or on bathroom floors.
2. Meters are the metric alternative to yards.
I hope that has cleared everything up for all of you.
Does anybody else have a sneaking suspicion that the new Dream Theater album is
being promoted by Derek's keyboard supplier? Will the next album after the new
one be called 'Rising Into JP100'?
Somebody mentioned rumours of Vauxdvihl splitting - if that's true, it would
suck more than a black hole. Any more info about this amazing band would be
greatly appreciated. Maybe it's because I tend to like the darker sides of
music, but these guys urinate on many of the bands mentioned here from a great
height.
As the proctologist's wife said as he left for work "have a nice day at the
orifice".
stay safe and happy listening

I went to the Blossom show last night, and Geoff sounds better on an "off
night" than most singers sound on a good night. I also saw QR in Toledo last
Tuesday, and the Cleveland setlist was changed to accomodate Geoff's
laryngitis. Regardless, the band's performance was amazing, and I hope to
catch them for their rescheduled Columbus date.
>I had tix for the Odeon show and I'm mega-bumming, but I was really glad to
hear >Scott announce that the whole band will be personally autographing all
of the >Odeon show tickets and WMMS will be sending them to all of the

I have mixed emotions about these types of shows. When Metallica played the
Odeon in February, I was pissed that only radio contest winners could attend,
and not fan club members or winners of other forms of contests (record store,
music store, etc.). When people who win tickets out of sheer boredom or luck
get to attend these shows, and a fan who has singles, imports, boots, etc
doesn't, that's when I have a problem. Don't get me wrong, I know true fans
like yourself deserve to go this show, it just irks me when people who only
know "Silent Lucidity" get to go also.
>Queensryche a truly dedicated to their fans and it really shows. They
>are one of the true class acts in rock!!
Damn straight. I got to meet them after the show in Toledo, and they were
extremely down to earth. Eddie Jackson is a really cool guy. I met them
before last night's show, and asked Geoff what it was like to be on
Politically Incorrect, to which he replied, "It was fun, they invited me
again." Let's just hope there are less politicians next time. I also talked
to Michael Wilton about Coltrane and Miles, and Scott informed me that he
switchd to Pearl drums before this tour started. Like other musicians I've
met, namely Page Hamilton, Doug Wimbish, and Matthew Sweet, QR is truly a
class act.
>I hope you Blossom people enjoy the show <or get one for that matter>...
Done and done. And I mean done.
Miles away,

You can make a great song out of it. But, where was I...OH YES, it's another thing to have a string orchestra playing a piece, and instead of taking up the lead violin you start RAPPING over it. When did people decide that RAPING classical music was a good idea?
I'm sorry, did I misspell something there? :)
> Simple Meter: > > Simple meter is when the beat unit can be most easily divided into 2 > equal parts.
> Compound meter: > > Compound meter is when the beat unit can be most easily divided into 3.
Ron Thal meter:
Ron Thal meter is when the beat unit is cast aside and 11 notes are crammed into an otherwise normal 4/4 tempo. 11/4 time usually causes the hemispheres of the brain to start arguing, which proves that Ron Thal is uni-brained.
Racer X meter:
Racer X meter is a fancy way of saying 16/16. It demands that all instruments play sixteenth notes, and none can be changed to eighths or quarters under any circumstances.

I'm from Europe... The fact is that in my country(Slovenia http://www.ijs.si/slo) the note
H is english(american) B, where our B is english(american) bB.
That's the whole point. So C major(my country) is C D E F G A H C, ^ as opposed to english(american) where it's C D E F G A B C ... ^
So if I try to play some music that's written(notes) in english(american) style, I have to play B as my H, and bB as my B.
For example : F major(my ver.) F G A B C D E F F major(eng. ver) F G A bB C D E F.

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on any of the >other Magna Carta tribute CDs. ----------------------------- I guess that we will have to agree to disagree about the MC Yes tribute (Hey, what a cool name for a rap group :) ). I think that it is great, and really like the different interpretations, given most of the tracks. IMHO Starship Trooper is the weakest song - Wakeman Jr. (Adam) does a good job on the keys, but the singers heavy metal stylings don't fit the music. Turn of the Century is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded, and the duet of Steve Howe and Annie Haslem, make it even more so.
The Genesis tribute is outstanding. Magellan does a killer rendition of "Mama" (never one of my favorites, in its' original form).
The Pink Floyd tribute is good, but a little to faithful to the original.
The Tull tribute kicks ass! I was pleasently suprised by this one. Again, Magellan does a great job on two of the tracks. John Wetton and Echolyn are cool, also.
All-in-all, a fine package of tributes. I hope that a MC Kansas tribute is in the works, and that MC returns to their original formula of using the young prog bands from their own label, instead of relying so heavily upon the more established, well known artists.
My 2 cents worth!

Anyone from Philly or Philly area going to the FW show on the 10th?
I was wondering where the Troc is? How to get there, etc.
E-mail me if you can help.
Thanks.
